An Ork a day keeps the Mad Dok at play... @ 2011/04/16 13:46:36

Post by: superspud

Hi, after being a long time admirer of the P&M blogs on dakka, I finaly decided to get my act together and make my own.
So Waaagh! Cogtoof was born. The idea is a Big mek who joins an Evil Suns warboss Zagrukk to create a mixture of a dread mob and a speed freak force.
In terms of Painting I was aiming to paint an ork a day (or as close to it), with the aim of having them ready for octobers throne of skulls tournament.

I thought I'd start with a Nobz mob (5 Nobz with 'eavy armour, cybork bodies and a variety of weapons, accompanied by a painboy).

I have finished 2, 3rd on the way. (Apologies for the picture quality some turned out a bit iffy)

Nice. Red and yellow seem to be a popular color scheme lately. Very solid colors. From what I can tell your panting is very smooth and clean.Cant wait to see the full squad completed.

@ schank23: thanks, i chose evil suns as i thought they might be less popular :( but hey. should have squad finished mid next week.

With the visit of my brother on the horizon I'm hoping to get the army built so i can test the mettle of his space wolves (http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/360256.page).
here is the army i have selected, and am currently about 50% through building.

Cogtoof's Dread Mob- 1500
Big Mek Grimjaw Cogtoof: burna, KFF, 'eavy armour and bosspole
Warboss Zagrukk Da speedsta: warbike, power klaw, cybork body and attack squig. (using the FW model)

Nob Mob (6): power klaw, 2 'uge choppas , 'eavy armour, painboy and cybork bodies
Ork Boyz (20): 2 big shootas, Nob; Power klaw and bosspole
Ork Boyz (20): as above
Deff Dread: 4 combat arms, grot riggas and armour plates.

Bikers (5): nob; power klaw and bosspole

Killa kanz (3): kustom mega blastas
Killa kanz (3): big shootas
Deff Dread: 2 combat arms, 2 skorchas, grot riggas and armour plates.

still got quite a bit to build, bah. with some spare time on my hands today i decided to finish off my nob mob by building my pain boy.
after looking at a few tutorials and other peoples examples of conversions, i decided to make mine out of spare nob parts and other bitz, and then about half way through i hit upon the possibility of making Mad Dok Grotsnik, albeit my own version. So I settled on making him with the intention of using him as a pain boy if I couldnt fit in thee Mad Dok.
All he needs is a bit of Green Stuff to make his brain, but will have to wait till my bro comes up as im out of GS.

Whilst rummaging in my bitz box for bitz to make the Mad Dok I came across several bitz for my Big Mek so I decided to put him together as well.
Not sure I will stick with him for the final army as I am a bit undecided whether or not I like him. I think he might be a tad unimpressive as the leader of my army, although i do have the warboss to be the centre piece, so i might keep him.
Anyway here he is let me know what you think...
There is a piece of guitar wire or cable to go from the bottom of his controller to the side of the drone, but I wont add it until both are painted and based.

OOOOOOOOOOOoooooooo shiny, the bright side being at home with the Doughnut Thief and Parents . The red, yellow and green....good combo.

Mad Dok Rippa Da Merciless looks great....I like what you've done with the speargun arm. I'll try and see Martin before he visits and give him some wire for you.....which will look better that the stuff you've used.

As for your Big Mek.... I think you're right he is not impressive enough. You should use the Black Reach Warlord as a base or at least something bigger. His custom burner looks good mind. As does his Kustom Force Field...wicked...how did you make it float?

Good luck with getting one painted a day.

Peter

Thanks for the kind words.

@ PDH: nice to hear from you Pete, I was actually ogling your Snakebite Nob earlier today and was going to get martin to ask how you painted his skin, as i think it has turned out really nice, and i might steal...ahem borrow your process.

I have been thinking of Making cogtoof out of a bigger model, as i intend him to go with the Nob mob and at the moment they tower over him, alright for a lowly mek, but not one as fearsome as Grimfang Cogtoof!
Have been toying with the idea of making a warboss out of the bellringer from the Screaming Bell. I will post a pic so everyone knows which part. He would need a lot of fixing up with armour plates- probably plasticard and GS.
In the case of the Kustom Force Drone, in terms of him floating, the trick is in having an old battered up camera, it hasn't shown up the flying stand!

Here is the Bellringer, will need to sculpt an extra finger, and rework his arm and legs. I had started cutting bits off for a powerklaw for a warboss. However he should make a good base for Cogtoof.

yep, if you look really closely, you can just barely make out the flying stand.

Stuff looks good dude, since i've yet to start painting my Ogretusk Metalhead's bad moon speed freaks, i'll be watching what you do with interest.

Ah the magic of an old camera.

I think Martin mentioned you had a somewhat crazy idea about using that rat ogre as a warboss.....that is a hell of a lot of work....how were you planning on having him stand up?

Cheers about the snakebite nob. Since I took that picture he now his armour plates done up to the point of battle damage. He also has red and white checks on the power claw case. So much to do and so many other projects lol. As for his skin it is pretty much Painting Masterclass WD351 (Bad Moon Ork Warboss with converted buzz saw power claw). I used more Knarloc Green in the later stages (as in mixed I didn't use pure Gobline Green). I didn't use any golden yellow and didn't highlight up as far as Darren Latham. I also gave the skin a couple of watered down washes of Baal Red. It was kinda trial and error. Do you have WD351?

Peter

@ PDH: found my copy of WD 351 today so might give the painting guide ago in next few days.

After a day off yesterday ( had to go into town with my brother to buy a wii) I had to get back into the swing of things with a spot of modelling today. No headway done on the painting, instead I spent today remaking my Big Mek. This time he was going to be BIG! Based him off the Bellringer from the Screaming Bell, mixing in various bitz from my collection including some of the Deff Dread and Killa Kanz bitz (due to the fact I took a leg from the box I now have to make a Killa Kan with either tracks or one that bounces- bit like a pogo stick).
Here are a few pics to show progress so far, still need to GS some gaps and sort of basing. Then once the GS is done will stick some more armour plates on.

LOL, or you could just stick an afterburner engine bit like the one from the eldar tank to the bottom of the Kan, and have him float around. gonna need plenty of smoke around him though, and a nice soot blackened paint job as well. be really funny if he's holding a marine by the throat and stuffing his head into the exhaust flames.

"All's I evuh wantd ta be in life waz a Stormboy, an den some head, uppity mek boy stikks me in dis 'ere kan see. I swearz I evuh find 'im, I'z gonna givem an excuze to hav a new metal fing fer an arm." -_-

In terms of progress, spent another day in town today so not much chance to do any modelling or painting.
Going to get some done tonight so will have an update tonight or tomorrow morning.
Managed to get round to picking up some GS and some Nasty Skulkers (going to make myself Zorgo a grot bandit that may double as a ammo grot or grot helper).

That Big Mek is looking riight ded killy, brah. And if that guy looks that good using a rat ogre body it makes me wonder what my boss will look like using an Ogre Kingdoms ironguts body, and since I can't seem to find just one ogre by himself, I guess I'll just have to convert all 6 of them and make my warboss, a Big Mek KFF, Big Mek SAG, and a Cyberdok, leaving two that I have no idea what to do with.

edited for typos

@ SebastionSynn: cheers dude.
Those Ogre conversions sound really cool, you will have to PM me with the photos or a link to there post once you have made them. You could always use one to make a Biker version of either the warboss or big mek if you want.
Or make a massive weirdboy/warphead! Could use Orks as minders holding the chains, like the grots on the metal one.

A Weirdboy is quite the idea, so 5 down and 1 to go. I don't think they would work so well for bikers, the body of the ogres is all one piece except for the heads, arms, and the gut plate. So to do a biker version would mean cutting him in half, then cutting in the legs and a considerable amount of time GS'ing which i believe would be beyond my skill. Thanks for the Weirdboy idea, and thanks for the support.

and i finally figured out what was bothering concerning his backpack. There's nothing holding his pack on that is immediately noticeable, use a strip of plasticard and run it over the tank and rivet it into his back, of make straps that run from the tank up over the shoulders but under the shoulder plates, or not. it is your model after all.

An Ork a day keeps the Mad Dok at play... @ 2011/04/24 09:52:51

Post by: monkeytroll

Hey,hey, some interesting looking stuff here

Some nice work on Cogtoof, but agree with SebastionSynn about the pack needing something to hold it in place, even if it's just a couple of plates riveted into his back.

Nice simple colour scheme, bright and vivid, looks good. Definitely keeping an eye on this.

An Ork a day keeps the Mad Dok at play... @ 2011/04/24 13:51:26

Post by: superspud

Thanks for the ideas folks.
Going to try the battle damage, have been looking into it for a while. Have tried a few examples on a bike which I will photo today, but still need to work out some mixes for the red.

As for the backpack, it was orginally attached to his spine (in that I cut and filed a massive groove for it to sit in) but I don't think it has worked after the painting. So I think I will rivet it to his back. I prefer the idea that its permantly part of him rather than something he puts on.
Will give it a bit of thought and hopefully sort it in the next few days.

edited for spelling and grammar.

Here are the pics of the bike I have been working on. The red isn't a bright as I have been using on the other models, as I was only trying out the Forgeworld Masterclass book technique ofusing layers, purity seal and hairspray. Quite happy with the results although I would have to repaint some of the areas to get it to work. Otherwise I might paint a lighter colour in patches and then a layer of boltgun then mithril in the centre.

@ Marcin: I haven't recall the ABC Robot although I'm a Judge Dredd fan, so maybe subconsciously it may have been part of the inspiration. Certainly the face looks really similar and the armour plates on the shoulders.

Have just taken the photos of the Mek now that he has had a bit of work on the armour and added a bit to the Kustom Force Field. Might need to add a lick of paint to the rivets but otherwise I'm happy with him.

Squig Cat sounds cool, and a nemisis warboss might be on the cards, need a warboss at some point anyway.

@ Cjsuner: Red is as follows.
Basecoat Mechrite Red.
Followed by a layer of a mix 1:1 of Dark Flesh and Blood Red.
Then a layer of Blood Red.
Edge highlighted with Solar Macharius Orange.
Then lastly an edge highlight of Vomit Brown.

Got a wee bit of painting time today so managed to finish off the 'Nob with the Golden Sluggas'.

Far from being the Nob who never misses, the Golden Slugga confer a bonus of a slightly sinister nature. The Golden Sluggaz were stolen artifacts by a particularly cunnin' ork. However Mork (or possibly Gork) forsaw this happening and placed upon the weapons a terrible curse (some would say disproportionate to the crime). When under fire from enemies the bearer of these trophies has the uncanny knack of being the first to fall. (Nothing to do with the fact that he has 2 sluggas and not a power klaw or 'uge choppa)

Anyway to the photos. Also took more of the Nobz with there battle damage.

After a break from the Orks yesterday, ( recieved my order of Warmachines Retribution of Scyrah models - might do a seperate blog on them either once I'm finished the Orks or as a side project) I got back to painting today, finishing off the final Nob.
The Nob mob itself is now complete, but I will finish the Mad Dok before I base them in case I choose to use him as a lowly painboy.
Here is the final Nob, the second with an 'Uge Choppa. Will take some pics of the full mob, but maybe I'll wait until their based.

@ Gitsplitta: Cheers dude.

@ bigfish: For the blood I use the following;
Basecoat Dark Flesh (this is what I use for dried blood, I always like the idea that the Ork doesn't clean his choppa but lets the blood layer up over time)
Then a layer of Scab Red
Followed by a layer of Blood Red
I wash it all with Ogryn Flesh
Re-highlight the edge of the blade and a few splashes here and there with Blood Red to look like fresh blood.
Then once its dried a selective cover of Gloss Varnish.

Hope this helps.

Its a beautiful day in the north east of Scotland today, giving me the perfect chance to watch my father set fire to the woods (or almost set fire to the woods) and also get a spot of painting done in the sun.
First on the cards was to finish off the Mad Dok himself, and thus complete the Nob Mob.
Also had a chance to finish off my Retribution of Scyrah models, which I will start as a blog in a wee bit (probally under the title 'Superspud's bit on the side').

So here is the finished Mad Dok, still need to work on the bases, but that may have to wait until its cooled down a bit (us Scots dont work well in the heat)

I think, that while it looks very good, something that would heighten the quality a lot would be if you based them.
I like the mad dok, btw

An Ork a day keeps the Mad Dok at play... @ 2011/04/30 16:02:28

Post by: superspud

@ joshoftheforest: sure not a problem.
I use two different recipes, one for the Nobz and then another for characters.
Nobz is quite basic:
Basecoat Knarloc Green,
Wash Badab Black
Highlight Gretchin Green.

The characters take a bit more doing (used the guide from WD 351):

Basecoat Orkhide Shade,
Layer Knarloc Green,
Layer Goblin Green,
Raised areas are then painted 4:1:1 Goblin Green, Golden Yellow and Bleached Bone.
Highlight same colours but this time 2:1:1 mix.
Highlight with a thin layer of Bleached Bone.

Hope thats useful.

@ Saintspirit: I agree, will be basing them tomorrow, same way as the Big Mek. Sand, Scrap and Stones.

where is the big mek's other claw, i noticed this before and thought i just couldn't see it do to all the dark primer, but now i can tell for sure that his "thumb" claw is not attached. looks really nice btw, and since you painted him in the sun, it disproves your statement that scots don't work well in the heat.

NRM, after zoooooooommmmming in real close, i can see the thumb claw is a tiny thing, but it is there. what threw me off is the AobR warboss has a 3 fingered PK as well and his thumb claw is just as big as the other two, but yours isn't, which is how i missed it.

Yes its a bizarre claw this one, its out of the Nobz kit, as far as I'm aware there isn't anything else to go on it, I added the front axle of a warbike just to make it a bit more menacing, and make it more like the Mad Dok artwork in the codex.

Cheers for the comments, managed to spend another day in the sun painting and basing (its un-natural to have this many nice days in a week!)
Got the Nobz Mob based, chose to base the Mad Dok on a 40mm base, partly incase I use him as Grotsnik, partly because I felt he needed to stand out a bit more from the Nobz. As he is built from the Nobz kit mainly, I felt he seemed to blend in, which isn't too bad in my opinion if he is the painboy, but not great if he is meant to be a character.

Also got time to paint the first of the Boyz mob, will wait until done the other 19 before I base him, for consistency. Didn't take too long to paint him so will be aiming to do a few each day, but will have to build some more as I have only built 5 or so.

Today I decided to get more of the Boyz Mob finished, and after an early rise (unusual for me, trust me) I got stuck in with the building. Had to build 2 more to make up 12 for a potential Trukk Mob or for the start of my planned 20 strong Boyz Mob. After these were done I made a start with the painting, I was aiming to get half of these boyz finished today, with the others done tomorrow, as I have an interview on wednesday so might not get a chance to paint anything then.
Despite having a break for some visitors, I made rather good progress (if I do say so myself) and got all 5 done, and once I add them to the one done yesterday I have 6 completed.
Might be slightly harder tomorrow as there is a Nob to do as well, with quite a bit more armour, which I am discovering is the most time consuming part of the models.

After not getting the Boyz done yesterday, I had the simple task of finishing off the last few bits today.
Still need to base them, which I will do tomorrow, and I may add some blood to the weapons. Although I will decide whether to put blood on once their based.

Going to be moving on to painting a trukk tomorrow as well, although as it is the first I will have done, I am not sure whether I will be able to complete it a day or not.
Decided to make the boyz mobs into trukk mobs instead. The plan is to have 2 trukk mobs of 12 with sluggas and choppas, and a mob of 20 with shootas.

With the bases of my trukk mob drying, I turned my attention to the trukk itself, I have customised the GW trukk kit by adding an Ion cannon from a tau hammerheas, which I saw done somewhere before may have even been in WD, and some extra exhausts out of the Imperial Sector.

My plan is to do all the metal on the trukk first, painting it boltgun metal, then using hairspray and purity seal to weather it. Unfortunately I'm out of both so I will have to wait to start it.
In the mean time I plan to finish the first Deff Dread. I have made some progress on it so far, but the rest will have to wait until tomorrow.

I will hopfully have a chance to upload my trukk mob bases later, but in the mean time here is the trukk and dredd. I plan to add thetrukk gunner and driver in seperately, allowing me to paint them easier.

Oh ok. Is that Catachan green ? the skin is a very warm tone of green. I like it, I must admit there are better ways to do it, but I still like it. Keep it up.

Oh and a quick tip. If you find a better way to do skin then do it now so that you don't have to re-paint 50 somthing models.

I also like the look of the trukk. How does it compare to the height of a normal trukk? You may see some people complain about LOS issues, but it looks nifty

An Ork a day keeps the Mad Dok at play... @ 2011/05/05 22:01:31

Post by: superspud

Cheers, It is quite a bit lower than the standard trukk.

I will take a picture showing the size comparison, but I reckon its probably about half the height.

Some people may complain I suppose, but I'm planning to use them in games with friends mainly so I'm not too fussed. If people moan too much I generally just don't play them

As a continuation from an earlier post, after a lengthy browse of Painting tutorials I may give this a go for the skin (http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/278943.page)

Ah I see. That is much more easy than the 7 steps it takes me. Don't worry about people complaining either, every ork invention is different. That is nothing compared to a guy i met at a tournament, he was using cardboard boxes in the shape of rhinos for rhinos, when the tournament advisor complained they were not citadel products he revealed they were made from sm boxes . In short, there are more things to complain about in other armies (like my friends grots who are holding scrap metal above their heads to block line of sight.

A bit more work done on the Deff Dread today, still working on the main body, the arms seem a long way off at the moment.
Decided to stick with the skin tone for the time being, I'm happy enough with it, and if I decide to work more on it I will look at adding another layer of highlighting. I don't want to get stuck going back and working on models that I have done, I'd rather concentrate on getting new ones finished first.
Will have to make an order for some purity seal so I can start work on the trukk, but in the mean time I have the dredd and either Killa Kanz or the shoota boyz to work on (both will need made first) I will decide which I want to paint after the dread is finished.
Few pics to have a look at, whilst I go back to painting the Dread.

Is that deff dread the standard kit or have you added to it, cause i'm looking at the side profiles and not seeing any obvious connection from the Kan to the faceplate. it should have metal strips and rivets pinning it to the front of the kan, so if that's standard, then GW goofed.

An Ork a day keeps the Mad Dok at play... @ 2011/05/06 18:44:05

Its straight out of the box so far, the only changes I have made are to the weapons, which I have combined with Killa kanz parts.
There are some connecting parts but they are covered by the face plate.

that's what i meant, there's nothing showing that is connecting the face plate to the body of the Kan, and there should be, so GW goofed. However, it's a really nice looking model despite that flaw, and your doing a great job with painting it.

that's an awful lot of shiny newness to all that silver, as others are always pointing a good wash or two and some highlighted fresh mithril silver scratches would make it just that much better. Me, I like it, i have trouble with washes myself so, your model looks great to my eyes, and now that i've seen a deff dread finally fully assembled, i might just have to pick one or two iof them up. or just scratchbuild/kitbash the way i've done everything else.

After a lengthy break, I finally got a bit more done, finishing off the Deff Dreads base.
I am aiming to get back into the swing of things, but at the moment I'm rather enjoying painting my Warmachine and Hordes models. Although I'm planning to get my next truck mob done when I have some spare time waiting for paints to dry. So bear with me, and I'll get some updates soon.

Although have everything I want for the army, I would like to see what the finecast models are like, so may have to get one either for the Orks or maybe for my Eldar or Marines. However I pretty much have all the models that are out at the moment in Finecast for these armies in metal, so I may have to wait.

It must be said, my Space Wolves carry 2 or 3 spare doors with them wherever they go, just in case the opponent wishes to swap trophies at the end of the game. I tend to find that one door is equal to a Commander's head or suchlike. We shall have to play over summer and see who ends up with the most bits for their bases!! ;-)
