The title pretty much says it all. Post below if you're in Vancouver and looking for games, this can be our comminuty database so to speak.

My friends and I usually play at Strategies on Main St. They have open gaming on Sundays, the tables are usually setup as 4x4s and your models have to be painted, 3 colours, no primer, bases must be done too. It sounds like a silly rule until you realize that this keeps out most of the less desirable opponents. The owner used to work for GW and they carry just about everything GW makes, along with Privateer Press, Reaper, Firestorm, Flames of War and more. There's also rumors they will be carrying the new Dark Age range in the new year.

Feel free to send me a PM if you're interested in setting up a game.

That all sounded pretty awesome up until "must be painted" part... maybe in a couple months I'll have at least one army fully done.
Gunna have to check out that store though... the one at Renfrew makes me sad because every time I've gone there to buy stuff, they tell me no one likes 40k and I should only come if I already had people to play with, which is poor customer service and not very friendly at all.

Yeah, Connections isn't my favorite place in the world. The one on Cambie frequently holds card came tournaments, like yugioh, needless to say, not my crowd.

There is a new Games Workshop store opening soon in Burnaby/New Westminster. November or December at the earliest...

But Strategies is good. Worth checking out.

Hey Hub,

Sounds good. I will let you know. Probably after the halloween weekend. Where is Stronghold? I've never heard of that place before.

stronghold is first and foremost a magic card store, and secondly a privateer press store. BUT, im buddies with their buddy, so we're all buddyies guy!

but all south park qoutes aside, its out by royal oak skytrain,

and 12x12 tables are worth going nearly to new west for (since its only 5 min walk off the skytrain)

Well guy, I saw that when I checked out their website, didn't see anything about GW there, but if you say so buddy.

A 12x12 would be great for an apocalypse size game. I'll PM you when I get my act together for a game. I'm in the West End, so everything is at least 20 minutes from my house.

This is more than a rumor at this point. GW's North America FB page and the GW Highgate Village page have both confirmed there will be a new store in Burnaby/New West. Apparently there will be some news on Thursday according to Owen, the manager at Highgate. This is the replacement for the Metrotown store that shut down in February for the new H&M store in Metrotown.
If you don't believe me, here is some more information. linky: https://www.facebook.com/#!/GWHighgateVillage

Edit: Games Workshop Highgate Village will be opening on November 19th according to the following link off of the official Games Workshop website.

Looks like we get a store WIP picture, lol. Did you find anything else out? Can't really see how big that space is from the picture, but here's what the manager said on Fbook:
"Progress has been slow on the building of the new Games Workshop in Burnaby but I have been in contact with the powers that be and the floor plan sent to me has three, six by four, gaming tables, a painting table and a intro-game table!

I still can't spoil it by letting out the official opening date but lets just say I have one and the company has everything it needs in place to open on time!"

Not Nov 19th? The size of it looks like the old Metrotown store minus the back bunker room.

Anyways, why did they choose highgate?

its near sky train but still not that close. Are they hoping to lure the new wave of Chinese kids that came this year?
They WONT play warhammer lol

The only problem is that I only have Wed-Thurs off, and since I work inna kitchen, Weekends are our busyest days, with no chance of getting them off.

So should a game be set up, because of the limited days off, and the drive down, it would be an all day affar, like, 12 hours of 40k goodness,

^^Not a chance. I wonder why they closed the Metrotown store? I also find it rather odd that they have staff and are not just a one man store. Is owen going to be the only full timer there? And everyone else key time? or are they reversing their decision and having properly staffed stores again (ie Manager 1-2 full timers and a few key timers?).

I am glad that Vancouver finally has a store again, we where one of the first ones in north america. It's just kinda got me thinking, why did they move from the biggest/most popular mall in the lowermainland to kingsway and edmonds? I know they totally redid KingsGate mall a few years ago cause I worked on it but I havent been around there in a long time. Metro had instent skytrain/transet access, the skytrain station is kinda far (15-20 min walk) plus I wouldn't want to be around edmonds after dark. I guess it had something to do with the lease/mall hours.

Luna do you have any inside info on the rental/lease agreement? And thanks for the WIP pic's.

Oh well Owen is a cool guy, although I do like Darren at Stratigies though. Funny story about Darren. He used to manage the metrotown store, but didn't like the way the company was going, so with his staff discount he bought two of everything in the GW store then opened his own store the next day. That always kinda made me chuckle.

One other question, is the Thor that worked there the same Thor who used to run the Apoc club in burnaby, or the bald guy with lots of tats, if it's the second guy awsome on him for winning the BB turney. Great game. =o]

PS if anyone wants to buy a bunch of GW stuff cheep and is local ( I live in portmoody, but skytrain is king) i'll shoot you a damn good deal just shoot me a pm please. I need some more Abrams Tanks and humvee's.

Hey Mike. Regarding the Metrotown store, my girlfriend used to work for the mall. The wing that GW was in was rented out by H&M for a massive multi-level store. As the leases expired, they were not renewed. I obviously cannot say for certain but this seems like a reasonable conclusion to draw.

It's not really a "Vancouver" store though, it's basically on the border between Burnaby and New West, but I live in the West End and the Park Royal store is tiny and a pain in the ass to get to. Strategies is the place I go to a lot, but the painted rule is a bit of a barrier for my friends to come and play as they don't have painted forces yet.

Thor is the bald guy with the bomb on his head. He was involved in the Apoc club, but I never did get a chance to check that out. I think you might be talking about the same guy.

I haven't been out to see the location, but I would be surprised if they're not on schedule to open. The store has been putting out periodic announcements and answering questions about the contests mentioned above.

@Tronz, GW will not renew that area not with Toys R Us gone. That was the sole reason GW stucked with that secluded area.

Thank you both luna and Tronz for the information you have provided. I can totally see with Toys'r'us gone that GW wouldn't want to stick around in that deadzone. I guess the rent or lease agreement in the rest of metrotown or metropolis was to much for them.\

If you look around the skytrain lines (both expo and mellinum lines) there are much better areas then the burnaby?new west area. I wound about brentwood? It has a nice station there, it's not a rough area like edmonds is, and a good bus loop there, it's right off the highway #1 and hastings....plus the lougheed highway. It just seems like another lost oppertunity for GW in Vancouver.

I could see why they wanted to move out of Gastown in the late 90's (skidrow area) as it changed from drinking/drunks/ to crack junkies and hookers....mmm hookers agahgahygahagha

Ahhh also I see the store hours are from 12noon-9pm I guess they wanted a store with a outside door and not be bound by opening when the mall opens....-facepalms myself-

There was a..... "prime" area around New west sky train station. ( if im not mistaken there was 2 hobby game stores near that area )
its also 3 mins away from Douglas college. Almost everything dictates choosing that place if not for the druggies and hookers -_-

honestly this current High Gate location.... it wouldn't last long, it has no values.

Well,to be fair they are really changing that area. It used to be drugs and hookers as soon as your stepped off the skytrain, but with the two towers that have gone up around there, and the fact they are knocking down whole city blocks and rebuilding them, might mean a change for the area.

Also wasn't it chaos games and forsaken games? I know rick ran forsaken but I don't know if it's still open. That place had hella space. One huge store with lots of tables and space for people. But as most games store I think it turned more into a 'club' then a business. And thats the probelm with FLGS, you have to manage it like a business but has the atmosphere of a club. That is one hard arse balance.

I agree with you though. The store isn't going to make money once the novelity wears off. It's to hard to get to, and it's to far from the west end...which means the kids with money. . I just hope this isn't GW's idea of ' well we tried but the store went undered...to bad Vancouver...go to park royal...since we closed down the Richmond and Surrey stores.

The hooker and druggy place is New West Minster station.

High Gate ( the current store to be ) is filled with old retired people, and low income apartment area :<

They have really cleaned up around New West station. they are knocking down whole city blocks to put up new construction (condo's or highrises) They have built two new high rises right on top of new west station.

Sorry if I wasn't very clear.

Around Edmonds station used to be a really rough area also. Kingsway and edmonds also used to be 'Hooker row' if you kept on going down kingsway into new west ( past the llumberland yard) Sighs, it's been so many years since ive been around that area tho other then for a few months work.

I guess we will all just have to wait and see. Personally I will continue supporting Strategies as much as I can. It's a great store, Darren's a good manager and I think he does a very good job of balancing the club/business aspect of it. As a gamer, there are things that I would like to see change, but that may not be what's best for his business.

The Highgate Village location was a bit of a surprise when GW announced it. It's further out into the valley and when I spoke with the Metrotown staff prior to the shutdown, they were looking at locations in their immediate vicinity. For me, I'm 30 and I own a car, so getting there isn't the problem, but it's not exactly convenient. I think GW would be hard pressed to not have at least 2 locations in the Vancouver area though, given the size of the community here, but business decisions don't always make sense. Only time will tell if they can be profitable and successful.

There are no FLGS in the downtown area that support GW products. There is a hobby shop in the Tinseltown mall in Gastown, but I will not do business there. When they carried GW product and I was shopping there, all the owner did was complain about GW players not buying anything and just playing. All this while I'm holding a hundred dollars worth of product in my hand, waiting to pay. My friends that play Warmahordes go there occasionally and each time they are asked if they bought their product there before they'll be allowed to play. Again, they will not see business from me, period.

Anyways, this isn't really intended to be a "gak on GW for their bad location" thread, but whatever floats your boat.

Iagree with you about Darrenn, he's a great guy and manager. I haven't been there in quite a while but when I walked in he said hello mike and asked me if I needed any new BL books as he knows I like the BL books. Thats a damn good manager. I'm glad that you enjoyed supporting his store.

This really isn't 'gak on gw' it's just a two people talking about the new location of the store after almost a year long hiatius. And that we both think there could be better locations as you yourself do. Maybe I should start a new thread about that if you don't think it's approperate for this one.

It has been nice though talking with other gamers in the lowermainland. It's always nice to chat with people in your hometown and see what their take on things are. =o]

No painted models? What makes a person "Undesirable" if they dont have a fully painted army? Sure all the games will look better, but that keeps out newer wargamers because they dont have a fully painted army (and their army will spend more time on the shelf then actually playing) Its what they spent their money for I assume...TO PLAY! That's a really stupid rule I'm afraid

Just an FYI for everyone, Strategies(On Main St in Vancouver) is having a 200 point Kill Team event on Saturday November 19th - Here's the information:

November Saturday 19th Miniature Game Day 12pm-5:30pm Warhammer 40,000 (Kill Team)
Details: You will need a painted 200 point force. We will be using the Kill Team rules. Never played kill team? Ask staff for details. Bring your gaming supplies IE rulebooks, tokens, dice etc et

@ Mike - No worries here, that wasn't meant as a criticism to anyone at all, more a general comment. I completely agree with you about the local gamers. The community here in Vancouver seems really fractured and disconnected, it's nice to know there are like minds out there. And you're absolutely right about the new GW the location is terrible.

@ Simon - It's not that someone is undesirable to play with when they have unpainted models ( I have about 1500 points of painted stuff and about 10000 points unpainted...) but a lot of 'Ard Boys and excessively competitive people don't ever bother to paint their models. I believe the intention is to encourage people to take part in the whole hobby, not just how you can ROFLPWN everyone you face. Also stores like this don't just sell models and glue. This rule encourages his customers to buy more stuff, which is good for business, if the business thrives, the community continues to have a great place to play.

Excellent post. =o] If your FLGS thrives it can only meen good things for the local gaming group/community.

As you said the gaming community is very fractured around here. I personally would like to help somehow so what I am thinking about doing is making a demo table for Ambush Valley (vietnam suppliment for the Ambush Alley Game system Force on Force) and take it around to the different stores and Cons and demo it for people. As the system isn't dependent on 'buying Company X's figgies to play with the game' alot of different stores that sell a wide variety of model kits and figgies shouldn't have a problem with it as hopefully it will help sell stock that they sell ie 1/72 scale model kits and 20mm figgies, 15mm figgies etc.

As long as there is a tangable outcome ( they sell more stock) then I don't see a problem with it. As long as I don't step on established peoples toes I believe it should be all good. =o]

Hey Mike, sounds interesting. The only ranges I own at this point are 40k and a Menoth boxed set for Warmachine. It'd be cool to check it out. A friend of mine is getting into Dystopian wars and FoW as well, so I might end up with one of those eventually, but I'd be interested in checking it out at some point.

Any of you travel to gamestars in langley?? beautiful big store probably 10 tables of 40k on Fridays you all should check it out

Also I love the burnaby location... not in a mall so it's not a drop off babysitting center... plus it's about 10 minutes from my home

I live in the West End, so getting out to Langley is a whole day investment. I have seen and heard great things, but the soonest I will be going out there is in February. They will hosting Matheiu Fontaine's masterclass painting course then, but I doubt that I will be playing as it's 20 hours of instruction over 2 days...

I was in the new store on Monday and it wasn't bad. Still a few kids who mouth machine gun and rocket noises while they play, but definitely nothing like the daycare that it used to be.

Langley is a bit far for me, i'd be up for a 1250 point intro game at imperial hobbies if anyone is interested. I can be persuaded to travel to Vancouver as long as there is a place to park

I put my gf into the painting class since she's the artistic one of us two.... I've been in imperial hobbies and never seen tables there... I didn't look to hard but where do they have them hiding? And personally getting to richmond is a chore for me. Lots of parking at the new burnaby store. What army do you play gateway?

I think imperial hobbies is more of a phone in and book and they will make a spot for you, or so I was told when I asked.

I play a Space Marine army, which if I add all my models together is barely 1250 points, i'm quite new to this game

Can you make it to Langley from Richmond without taking any highways?

Vancouver BC, Canada - Warhammer 40k @ 2012/01/04 19:50:49

Post by: Tronzor

You can get to Langley by avoiding the highways, but it would be very slow. The fastest is to take the Fraser Highway as far as I know. Imperial Hobbies is the best hobby shop I have ever been in as far as hobby stuff is concerned, but I didn't see much room for gaming tables. They have everything from MTG to comic books to traditional model airplanes and tanks. The manager is quite good too.

one should never play 40k inside of a GW store, and in response to Tronzors ealrier post yes the hobby will survive through us the community buying stuff. But i don't believe spending is what hurts the warhammer community size the most at this point it is stuck up rules such as having fully painted armies, and having groups unwilling to teach new players the rules and help them enjoy the game, and alternatively for some people it is most about the gameplay that interest them and the hobby is secondary just throwing it out there

good store been open for a while is Hourglass comics in port moody decent selection and will order anything you want they have by-weekly 40k games on weekends im pretty sure but i usually play with my friends at my house so i never checked it out, specificaly they carry lots of space marines and orks and have a passable selection of the other armies also they still have a few pewter models in stock so if your trying to get some check them out quick

If anyone still cruises here Im looking for games of any size. I can commute within reason and am located in new west. Im NOT a power gamer and am looking for someone that isnt into playing to win. I basiclly just wanna push models around since I spent so long painting and assembling them. I am also looking for more of a mature gamer if your 40 and act 14 then its not gonna work, but if your 16 and act 20 then we should be good. We can try gamiing at a local store and if all goes good then Id like it to continue either at any store or at someone's house. Resond here or email at gecko_987@hotmail.com. thanks

You just missed the monthly session, but there are quite a few of us that play 40k at Trumpeters (held at the Bonsor Centre in Burnaby - close to the Metrotown Skytrain) on a Friday night.

Next meeting is December 7th:

http://www.trumpetersociety.com/schedule.html

We meet in the upstairs bit facing the Skytrain, and kick off at about 6:30

I thought trumpeters was an invite only sorta deal and you played mostly fow and warmachine/mailfaux/hordes. Is there a cost to get in?

Vancouver BC, Canada - Warhammer 40k @ 2012/11/06 23:18:42

Post by: LavuranGuard

Nope, just rock up and play! There is a $6 admission free to cover the room hire, but if you pay for what they call the "Full meal deal" for $55 you don't have to pay admission monthly and you get free entrance to our annual convention - which is a good day out and works out at quite a saving.

I've never seen anyone play Warmahordes there, but there are lots of historical games to play (might be FoW). There are also other sci-fi game sand such, but there's a hard core of about 8-12 of us 40kers too.

Ya, the metrotown location closed because the metrotown management there has been converting that side of the mall to a fashion wing for a couple years. I used to work in that area and our store was forced out by the management when our lease came up. They wanted way more money for a store in that wing if you weren’t a clothing store. We then moved to the other side of the mall. The company I worked for wasn’t small either, one of the largest in Canada. I heard they did the same with most of the non clothing stores in that area of the mall.

Only had great experiences at the new highgate location though.

Game stars is great. Good environment, decent prices, nice staff, food. Imperial hobbies is also pretty nice (if a bit cramped) and the staff are nice. Never seen tables there though? Strategies is great and the closest to me. For any one who wants to go to strategies or imperial hobbies then I would suggest parking at a canada line stop and then taking the canada line there. Strategies is literally right next to the... can't remember but one on from aberdeen. Me and a couple buddies have been building a board in my garage if any one feels like playing. Live on the west side.

Just calling out to anyone in the Langley region:

Gamestars was recently sold, and while it's still there, the new owners and management are moving away from 40k rather substantially, so for anyone looking for a new place to go, or anyone in the area looking for a game period, there's a substanital group of us at Wiser's Collectibles down on 96th and 201st, right by the Golden Ears Bridge.

It's an old store, been there for 25 years, and a bunch of us recently started going there after getting tired of Gamestars; we've got 5 tables, some custom terrain from the old Metrotown GW, along with a bucketload and a half of painted terrain, some GW, some home made, some of it older than I am from when Wiser's first opened.

We get together every friday around 6pm, and the store's open till about 1:30am on fridays, along with an evening pizza order the store does both for us, and the Magic crowd which gathers every friday.

Better yet, they've got US pricing, and a discount on top of that equal to the taxes for all 40k, Fantasy, Warmahordes, D&D and Pathfinder. They're also more than willing to order in anything they don't have in stock, bits, specialist game stuff, and even Forgeworld, if you ask nicely, and get a bunch of people together for a bulk order; shipping and duties are taken care of.

The only real downside is it gets bloody hot during the summer, and since it's a relatively small operation, aside from friday, they usually close around 6-7pm. There are, however, a bunch of us with Saturdays off, so we're thinking of getting a second "official" day of little plastic dudes going.

We're relatively laid back, throw the occasional small-time tournament, have monthly Apoc games, and are in the process of trying to put together a campaign. So, if you're in the region, drop by sometime, most of us don't bite.

a sample of the orc armour and Ghazghull in the front there all yellow

the orcs necrons and space marines won anrrowly time restraints meant i couldnt finish my last shooting phase which for tau is very important aswell as IG and eldar was good game

just show up. We are a friendly and pretty laid back group with huge collections and many armies for you to play against. I have been going pretty much every friday night for over a year and get one to two games
in each time I show up.

Hey all,

CHOP gaming holds regular events in North Vancouver, at the Fraternal Order of Eagles. Events run on Sundays, from 12:30 until about 10pm, and there is food and beer and lots of tables available to play whatever game your heart holds dearest. Our members tend to focus on the Fantasy and 40k, but we've had a big surge of Malifaux, a bit of Dystopian Wars, and some Dreadball and Warmahordes. We usually get 30-40 people out to each event, so if you play a popular game you're very likely to be able to show up and find an opponent really easily! We charge $10 a person to play, and the money goes into buying tables and terrain for the club so that next month you can play on even more awesome stuff.

You can like us on Facebook if you want to keep up to date on our events, we post them regularly there.

Our next event is happening this Sunday, May 12th at 12:30pm. Here's a Google maps link to show where the place is.

Hope to see you there!

Also awesome! I say that we all have an initial meeting at a local store or coffee shop (for security reasons and all that) and go from there. I'm happy to be the one coordinating it. PM me with an email address that I can easily access you with and I'll start rolling out the emails to get this underway.

Hey guys,

Recently getting into 40k. Looking for some mature players ( I am 26) to play with. Specifically looking to watch some games get played (Building my Tau force atm) and learn the game a little.

Totally understand if you want to meet up somewhere public first to ensure there is no crazy.

PM me if you are interested

Thanks!

It's not in Vancouver, but Great Canadian Miniatures in Victoria might work for you.
