Thanks for the comments, guys. I have another sanguinary guard, and his pistol is very close to his force weapon. How do you deal with 2 light sources interacting?
Should I paint the darker glow of the pistol on the force weapon, or the brighter glow of the force weapon on the pistol? Or just ignore it all together.

did you airbrush the osl? if so might i recomend a smaller spray of a much brighter color overtop

Having fun with the airbrush, I see?
I was wondering if you could post some side, or even back shots of the models. It would be cool to see the rest of the OSL.
Also, have you tried OSL on the jump packs?

The most recent guy from 2 other angles :
I haven't done more than spray the jets sky blue... I'm afraid if I try any more OSL on the model it will look too blue... I may have already put too much blue on them.
The power swords don't exactly look like they are radiating enough light... need to figure out a better way to do them.

Yes, very good OSL. Muted, not to bright, but just a small glow, like it should be, not a harsh light coming off them.

My new compressor got here today, so I can spray at lower PSI's now.

Excellent OSL! as for your question about the two sources i would say it depends on which is brighter. the brighter color would override the darker like say bright yellow would over take a dark blue light. id say it depends. although if the light sources are far enough apart id say you could ignore it.

Hmm... I think I'm just going to ignore the proximity of the sources and just try to paint it normally. It would be wierd tying to paint a blue glow off an orange light source, and an orange light source off a blue glow.

Excellent work! You pulled off the two sources wonderfully. i also like the colors you choose for the weapons, alot of models just have blue or white for the plasma coils. i also wanted to take a second and say that i like your basing.

Some WIP shots of my assault marines... not much work done, but whats cool is that these guys so far are almost entirely airbrushed... only brush painting is the grey rims around the jets. Starting to get the hang of Zenithal Highlighting.
Just for Funzies, I painted a few AOBR terminators as well... came out pretty well. Not related to this army, but still.

I've been using this fantastic guide here:
http://www.dakkadakka.com/wiki/en/Zenithal_Airbrushing,_OSL_and_Snow_and_Ice_Tutorial,_subject_-_Grey_Knight
I used the zenithal highlighting technique for all these guys, along with the highlight technique he describes.
The one thing I do differently is I outline a lot of the details in black ink, so the airbrushed highlights stand out a bit more.
working on updating my chaplain.. used him a while back. worked on his base, primed / initially highlighted his jump pack. Here he is so far:

Chaplain is OK, but I'm not a fan of the extreme edge highlights. Like the base though!

Thanks. Its pretty easy to do, but it requires an airbrush (at least is only easy to do with an airbrush... you can probably do it with a brush, but I have no idea how).

Started construction / basecoating of my second baal today...
Weapons / doors are all magnetized, so they can come off easy if I need to. I think I finally have a formula down for the paint scheme I like...
Primer Coat - VGC Satin Varnish + VGC Dark Green + VGC Imperial Blue, 6/6/1 ratio
Base Coat - VGC Goblin Green
Final Highlight - VGC Light Green
Shadow Filter - VGC Black Ink + VGC Thinner, 1/1 ratio
Highlight Filter - VGC Sick Green + VGC Thinner, 1/4 ratio
I'm pretty happy with it so far, should look better once it has some detail work on it. Will do it tomorrow!

Wow,
that's all I can come up with right now. WOW!
I like how you've done them, and BA codex fits with their fluf good enough for me...
With that many marines of one chapter, have you ever thought about wrapping up the Aurora Chapter, and doing another, maybe one that would compliment the armoured spearhead of the Auroras?
I am going to try and wrap up my Orion's Fists chapter this winter, and then I plan to collect other marines, not necessarily armies, but a Tac Squad and Rhino from a bunch of different shapters, I may someday do an army if I find another chapter that I like. The Aurora Chapter is in my DIY fluff I'm working on, and where my chapter has gotten a majority of it's armoured support... I plan to actually do my Predators, and possibly my Vindicator in Aurora Chapter colors, and a Tac. Sqd. and rhino will be my first additions beyond my army list that I have written up. I plan to do a squad each, with transport, or: Imperial Fists, Crimson Fists, Aurora Chapter, NovaMarines, Hawk Lords, Doom Legion, Exorcists, and maybe others later on...
I have been trying to decide what army other than our SM and Orks, and have decided on more marines, BA, GK, or something...LOL OH, and I may do a CSM army next winter, it's looking like I'm going to be busy with what I have for a while, painting takes some TIME, and I have 2 small children so I haven't got alot of time to paint, but I'm setting up a hobby station in my MANCAVE room soon... then I'll make more progress.
Sorry to ramble, this thread got me all giddy for 40K again... really though, Awesome work, nice source lighting, nice airbrushing, just plain NICE! I really would be interested in a commission or some of your EXTRA models... (yeah, I know, extra models are like 13 cans of Dew in a 12 pack...LOL)
Thanks for posting, great inspiration for us LESSER painters to keep striving... I might just need an airbrush!

Went to a tournament today with this army, about 20 people showed up. I placed 2nd Overall, with 2nd highest paint score as well. Would have placed first, but I played like an idiot against tyrannids (completely underestimated hiveguard, overestimated ygmarl genestealers). Massacre wins against Black Templar and Grey Knights. The game against the GK was particularly cool... I got first turn, and infiltrated my baals.... 2 assault cannon shots, 2 dead riflemen, 1 was venerable. $60 2nd prize isn't bad!

Thanks for the comments
I've considered doing a couple of squads of Imperial Fists, but honestly then I'd want to buy rhinos for them, and probably get them a few predators or something, and I can't afford the extra expense anytime soon, especially considering I'm trying to get a Thunderhawk together for my army. Besides, I keep coming back to the idea that it would just be plain cool to see 200+ marines, and 20+ vehicles, all together in the same color scheme in an apocalypse battle.. I'm going to try to make that happen.
I got bored with the codex marines, and decided to just start blood angels, but I liked my color scheme and chapter, so I just carried it over
I've never actually done any commission painting or anything, but would definitely have fun working with another color scheme for a change on someone elses marines! Hell, I wouldn't even charge for it (as long as its only like a squad, its fun for a squad, its work for an army!), just the cost of models+shipping let me know.

Awesome,
Let me know what chapter you'd like to do from the ones I listed, and I'll let you know when I can send you models... I'm going to try and find artists to do about half the "ten chapters" I'm adding to my collection. Each will be a tac in rhino, my vision is to have my 2500 or so Orion's Fists, about half the chapter's full strenght, along with a small force sent to help out from other chapters, each tac unit will be kitted diferent, so I can have variety and use a diff one in each list at lower pts games... some may get a speeder or pred, vindi, etc.. but only a couple units in each color scheme...
I'd be interested in a Tac Sqd in your Aurora Scheme too, with a rhino... let me know, I'd supply the models, and maybe I could donate a model or squad to the cause if they're as ROCKIN' as the ones you've pictured...
PM me what you'd want in trade to paint a Tac. Squad of Auroras, and what chapter you'd pick from the list if you'd prefer that. or if you'd do both Also, what might you need next for your army, for trade for the work?
shoot for 3 squads I'd trade a LR kit or??? they really are that good... Automatically Appended Next Post: Oh, and I don't want to commission the basing effects, I'm going to do all of them so my army matches the display....
I have come up with a simple mix of burnt umber, glue, and sand, and a little grass and some special rocks, bits, etc.. and it's simple but effective...

I took the lazy way out on the base, and simply flocked it green so it would match the display board I had. I never know what to do with dread bases, I kinda wish they were just flat 60MM bases instead of pre-molded with rocks, though I think it came out fairly well.
I'm pretty happy with the infantry bases, To do any more to them would take a disproportionate amount of time to results given.

Eh, think of it as a blog consisting of units in any of the loyalist chapters (except damn space puppies, they are basically chaos anyway and should be excommunicated from the Imperium!). I just build any marine units I want, paint em in the chapter colors, and call it a day

Yea, its basically a proof of concept, with that concept being that I don't have to strip my tanks to re-paint them The first predator I repainted wasn't finished, so I wasn't sure how this would look on a finished one. the whole tank is a WIP now, but what do you mean by lower the PSI? For where? The lascannon? Why?
48376
Post by: Capitansolstice
If you turn down the pressure that the airbrush is spraying at, you can control the osl a little more, Right now IMHO its kind of thick, because it is very opaque. Turning down the PSI will make it more transparent, and more like osl

I like the heresy shoulder pads! Any plans to do full studded plate? Maybe get some forgeworld guys?
18602
Post by: Horst
I'd like very much to grab some of the MKII Pre-Heresy Assault Marine guys from forgeworld eventually to use as vanguard, but for now I'm happy with regular guys for the most part.
How to paint the model! step by step assault marines! I'm doing these guys in a batch of 5. These first few steps I consider the basecoat, and they took me ~ 2 hours to do so far, not counting assembly.
Step 1: Base coat the model with VGC Dark Green mixed with VMG Imperial Blue, 6 drops to 1 drop, mixed with 4 drops thinning and 4 drops satin varnish. Just do light coats, and go back to hit any spots you miss. You need 100% coverage here.
Step 2: VGC Goblin Green + Thinner, 1-1 ratio.
Be sure to only spray this downward towards the top of the model, so it falls naturally on exposed parts of the armor.
Step 3: VMC Light Green + Thinner, 1-1 ratio
Spray this at a steeper angle downwards, so it hits less armor than the previous coat.
Step 4: VGC Transparent Green + Thinner, 1-2 ratio (filter layer)
You basically want to hit the entire model with a light coat of this, to give it a nicer shade of green.
Step 5: VGC Black Ink + Thinner, 1-3 ratio.
This is the shadow layer, and is mostly sprayed from the underside of the model upwards, under the jets, under the arms, behind the legs, etc. Anywhere that there shouldn't be much light falling on gets hit with this. It also acts as a basecoat for the rocks.
Step 5: VMC Stonewall Grey + Thinner, 1-1 ratio
Spray the rocks, leaving the middle a darker black.
Step 6: VMC Ivory + Thinner, 1-1 ratio
You want to do only the edges of the rocks with this to give them a final highlight.
Step 7: VMC Terra Earth + Thinner, 1-1 ratio
Step 8: VMC Florescent Green, undiluted.
I skipped a picture here, but the goal is to paint the base with the earth (duh), then to paint the top of the head, top of the shoulder pads, and the top of the jet pack with the florescent green to really make them pop.
Automatically Appended Next Post: more airbrushing!
Step 9: A coat of badab black along the shoulder guards (just around the edges), around the helmet edges, and all over the arms and legs.
Step 10: Paint the chainsword and bolt pistol VGC Scarlet Red
Step 11: Paint the tips of the weapons VGC Orange Fire
Step 12: A bit of Black Ink near the base of the chainsword and back end of the bolt pistol
Step 13: Your done airbrushing at this point, so throw down a coat of satin varnish to protect the work so far.

Step 18: GW Dwarf Bronze on the Aquillia and skulls, as well as fuel pipes on backpack.
Step 19: .2MM Black Micron Pen applied to seams in armor and the harness.
Step 20: GW Flesh Wash ( OOP Ink) applied to the areas where step 18 was used.
18602
Post by: Horst
Didn't take step by step pictures for this, but here it is after some more work!
Basically just add codex grey to the harness as a highlight, then skull white to the harness as an extreme highlight. Then paint the chainsword and bolt pistol with some mithril silver, and then outline the chainsword blade with black ink. Paint the eyes with a spritz of blue for the OSL, then paint it imperial blue, then light blue, then a final highlight on the eyes of skull white.

This is about 2 hours work so far... fixed assemblies that were broken, and made bases for them with rocks. Then airbrushed primer coat, and 3 layers of highlights. From this angle its hard to see that though... but still. These won't be painted to super standards, but I want to see how fast I can pump out 20 tac marines.

If you could that would be amazing Horst! I was just thinking the same as Hazzer, that this tutorial was definitely going to have to be reverse-engineered for Ultras.
Beautiful work on your Aurora Chapter btw, I subbed as soon as I saw the first few pics. You should consider re-creating your step by step as a tutorial post in it own right when you've finally covered all the steps, a lot of people would find it helpful I'm sure.

HAHA!! I have actually been buying the models I need to fill out my 2500pt list Lots of work will be done on these boys in the near future, Happy to give them a little love after 15 years of neglect
The shear volume of them is far less intimidating than my Chaos

then buy more ><
I just got back from christmas, spent another hour and a half on my tac marines. So far I have spent ~4 hours working on them, and this is pretty much how they all look -
So far looks promising. Considering that I have 20 at that level of paint so far, thats only 12 minutes per model to get them to that level. I figure they are about 40% done.... at this rate, it will take me 30 minutes to paint a single figure.
Might be worth it to try to do a few commissions then, if the end results are good enough to warrant it. charge $4.00 per model, and $8.00 an hour is a fairly reasonable rate for something I enjoy doing.

I'm amazed of the high standard of painting, with that speed you keep finishing your models! I suppose an airbrush helps, but it is an impressing task to finish the miniatures at this rate!

thanks
A lot of these are probably going to wind up on ebay eventually... once its all fully painted, I'll have more than enough to the point where I can probably just sell a 2000 point marine army and still have 10,000 points or so lying around
Then I can use that as start up money to buy another race.
but my new years resolution is to finish painting all my marine models before starting another army, so I'm trying to paint fast

Post by: Horst
The camera was set to widescreen mode instead of 8 MP mode... I set it, and pictures look better now!
Some more WIP pictures of all of the marines, with a few close ups. So far this is about 30 minutes per marine invested.... not bad for speed painting.
For comparison sake, these are a few of my original tac marines, that took probably 2 hours each to paint -

Really nice looking army.
If I was to be doing tanks red instead of green what colours would you suggest? With the Highlight going up to Blood Red.
And with the black shading on the tanks, how is that done? How do you know where to put the black shading?

Eh, if I was doing red, I'd probably use a dark brown + scab red as a base coat, then a highlight of scab red, then blood red.... then a filter layer of Valljo Transparent Red in order to blend the highlight layers.
I do the black shading by using layers of black green ink and black ink. I just spray black ink on the other side of any gradient where I hit it with green highlights.
27673
Post by: Thamor
A 1:1 mix of VMC Black Red:Scab Red, Then highlight scab then blood red?
Then with the black shading you do it directly below some of the lightest green highlights?
Cheers

Thamor wrote:A 1:1 mix of VMC Black Red:Scab Red, Then highlight scab then blood red?

Pretty much. Gives an exaggerated highlight, not realisitic, but I think it looks cool.
I have trouble blending my highlight layers, so after I use the layers of green, I throw a final coat of VMC Transparent Green on it, diluted like 1-1 with thinner. Blends all the highlights together pretty nice. THEN I hit it with the black ink for shadows. Automatically Appended Next Post:

I don't really care how they look for my mech BA army, because they spend the whole game in razorbacks anyway!

How much of this is brushwork vs the airbrush ?
18602
Post by: Horst
Rickfactor wrote:How much of this is brushwork vs the airbrush ?
well, for the librarian, this is him after airbrushing (and doing some edge highlighting with a brush) -
(I added one more final overcoat of blue after this to blend the shadows with the highlights, but that was over everything). And the staff had a brief spritz of florescent green, though the highlights of that glow were picked out by brush.
The rest was painted by hand (the face, the banner, the robes, etc.
The tanks are significantly more airbrush, but you can see on the tanks when they are only green, and the rest is brush painted. The OSL effects on lascannon coils is also airbrushed on, but again, certain highlights are picked out by brush.
Airbrush basically does the basecoat / shading for me, and the detail work is all done by hand.

@void - I have practiced skill. Wish I was naturally good at art :( I just spend so much time painting I eventually approach a level that doesn't suck. Cool thing about that apothecary - See his shoulder right by the white pauldron? I accidentally got white paint on it when I touched up the paint on the shoulder. wasn't so hard. Spray in the direction of the glow with the airbrush, using the appropriate blue color (forgot what color blue I used here, probably a mix of VGC Electric blue and VGC Imperial Blue). Then mix a light blue with white and use it to pick out edge highlights on the blue part, especially on metals, to make them look like they are shining.

@Red Corsair - Depends what i'm doing. If I'm doing gradients, like on power swords, I often don't clean out my airbrush at all. If I'm going from a light blue to a dark blue, just spray out most of the light blue, then add dark blue directly in. If they mix, so what, they have to mix on the model anyway.
If I'm switching colors completely, usually I'll hit it with a rinse of hot water, followed by a spray through of airbrush cleaner.
edit - Just noticed I missed a handle on a power sword! GRRR!!!
Will have to fix it now!

Mmmm.. Not all that bad Horst. You might want to work a little on your details though, airbrushing might be nice for the large areas but you do need to get stuck in with your regular brush on the finer parts. And bronze? To each their own but the Legion runs with steel details. Not to be a stickler (of course I will! it's waht I do! ^^ ) but you don't paint your Aurora Chapter orange and pink eh? Indigo and steel Horst, indigo and steel...

Had to cancel the Alpha Legion job... I feel really bad about it, but it turns out I just don't have the time to paint them all. School + work takes more time than I thought it would :(
ON the plus side... I painted up an abaddon model for MX as a thank-you for the thunderhawk (which is currently being painted slowly!)

Dude, I think he is fantastic.....
I am hoping that he arrives soon. Hoper even more that the Electro-Hawk hits the thread soon....

Yeah I gotta say while the electro is not far off from scale that it did in fact end up bigger than I expected too.
I think it was a combination of all the.layering and the inner/outer walls throwing off my size calculations....
I always sucked at math.......

I LIVE AGAIN! My love of 40k seems to go through cycles... I'll do nothing but 40k for a few months, then put it off, then do nothing but 40k again.
Well, with 6th edition out now, it looks like I'm going to start back up. I'm going to sideline painting the thunderhawk for a bit, because I really wanna get my army good to go for 6th edition first. Don't worry Mxwllmdr, I'm going to finish it before the year is out!

heh... finished my DC squad, AND did up 5 guard models!
I went with a blue/grey for the guard, because I want it to compliment the Aurora Chapter guys, as they are going to be used as allies. I think the blue/grey works. Here's a few pictures:
Next to a DC marine -
And my finished DC squad, with 2 close ups -

Group shot of what, MX? All the death company? Or just of everything in general? Because I don't have enough space on my table to take a group shot of everything ><

The death company would be fine. But if you can lay it out on the floor the whole shebang would be nice too.....

I posted this a while back... this has about half the tanks of what I have now, and I have another 50 or so infantry not pictured.
In this picture, I have:
5x predators
2x land raiders
3x rhinos
1x razorback
4x dreadnoughts
2x vindicators
1x storm raven
2x land speeders
50x tactical marines
45x assault marines
10x biker marines
15x terminators
I still have a LOT left unpainted... another ~10 terminators, another ~40 tac marines, another ~30 bikers.... plus another baal, 3 drop pods, another rhino, another furioso, and 2 more land speeders... not to mention like 5x metal captains.
