Because not too many 13 yr olds will be posting on this particular thread on this particular website, I doubt Although we've had a couple already.
And 15 here, that makes me the third youngest, right?

Almost 22 again.
Which does kinda suck, when you think about it. I missed BOTH 21st parties (was in hospital for the first one, and mother-in-law decided to stuff my plans for other one by going into diabetic coma after denying her diabetes for way-too-long.) so didn't end up having 'postponed one'.

Is it just me that is surprised at the low number of 35+ players? In my time of playing 40k I've generally noticed a little under half of the players at the LGSs (well, probably more like 30-35%) I've encountered are in that age bracket. Seeing as 40k is so old I would have thought that would contribute to that number as well. Maybe DakkaDakka isn't the best representation of the overall 40k demographic. Thoughts?
9808
Post by: HoverBoy
Just because someone plays 40k doesn't mean he's a member of dakka, or any gaming forum at all. There are a lot of closed friend player groups who barely even have contact with the online community at all.

44 and not ready to retire.
A lot of folks get started in miniature gaming before they reach their twenties and then drop out in their twenties once they get a significant other and have kids or other weighty time consuming responsibilities.
Then we reach a point where the kids and the job and the other responsibillities don't take up all of our time so we pick up hobbies again. For me, WHFB and 40K were relaxing so I picked back up in 2000 where I left off back in 1990. Other people go through longer gaps or turn to other hobbies like golf, dancing, gardening, computer games, or guns. I find those activities to be interesting occasionally but they don't hit all of my buttons like tabletop war gaming and miniature modeling.
You youngsters still have these dilemmas, decisions, and angst in front of you. I'm happy to be past that point.

I'm 13, and am NOT a crappy-ultramarine-player/painter who whines and tales others stuff. Intact I am the leader of the junior team in my FLGS and strategist. People say my painting is better than guys who've been playing five-times longer than me. Also I don't cry to my meema (if you get the reference that a to you!) so I can get the latest captain ultrasmurf to add to my army that's more glue than plastic, I work hard walking the neighbours dogs (I love dogs) and doing chores around the house to get money to get some chaos marines!
And yes, my mother was shocked when I told her that I wanted to start 40k because it wasn't a video game ;D.

So much for experience coming with age - a number of the veteran Dakkanauts who chimed in earlier are younger than I might have guessed (others, of course, are just as old as they appear ). Granted, I didn't touch a miniature until I was more than halfway through college (and didn't join Dakka until I had lurked sporadically for nearly a year, as the bug started biting progressively more intensely), so I'm a bit behind the curve, compared to many.
Now I'm wondering what most affects perceived age on Dakka: comportment, knowledge, apparent budget, orkmoticon usage, etc. Hard to guess, as the odd calm and articulate teenager and "LOLnneeds more OSL also smurfs sux" with three kids are bound to crop up and shatter any apparent trends.
Oh, right - I'm 25, riding high on that bell curve and rambling like... an overzealous preteen? a doddering old fart? Now I'm not sure which simile to use...

Can relate!
Schooldays from 8:15AM to 12:00PM were hell back in 1st grade, as a 6 year old. Now ten years later, schooldays from 8:20AM to 14:30PM are trivial and short.
On a side note, a lot of you guys are the same age as my 30-year old brother.

26, 3/4 of the way to 27. I've floated in and out of the GW world since 1995 (started pretty young). I dropped the hobby almost entirely between 18-23 to spend my money on the finer pursuits of life--drugs, booze, and women. But now I'm old and cynical and ready to make a more serious return to the game... I think.

and they are the right size for me to paint. That was 12 years back. Ran a 40K game night at FLGS for nine years and now have 7 armies, all painted
Working on filling out my 23 year old son's old IG army as he stopped playing in high school. Also play guitar in a classic rock band, so never grew up.

I work with a 60-something guy who makes me feel old so it really is only how young you choose to be.
Rather split personality when it comes to parent-career-fixer-guy (very serious) and hobby-music-anything-goes-maker (excitable, researching, mad scientist, artist, hysterical laughter sort).
Yes, I too wonder what the heck happened in the 20-30 range, that went a bit too fast with too much going on.
The graph DOES have a nice curve to it.

Next year for me. I did check this poll around my birthday, to see what the brackets were. But I can still hang with the 30-somethings for another year. It might be interesting to see how the age brackets have shifted. We’re all aging at the same rate, but the new users/old users ratio might be getting skewed depending on how the influx goes.

Turning 40 this year. I'm from a time when White Dwarf was useful and battle reports were more than just a photo shoot. One reason for the younger age curve might be that at lot of us older guys don't follow the current edition and are more likely to have stuck with an older version. That and life/wife/kids/house/career happens. I faithfully bought every codex from 2nd through 5th but drew the line at $50 each. Not a fan of all the "large models" that are becoming so common either. They look awesome but don't belong at this scale. They are trying to make 40k into 28mm epic and it just doesn't work. It would cost me over $500 just to update my rule set and i would rather spend the money on models. Our group is quite happy playing a modified/fixed 5th edition.
