I play Sisters of Battle. Though far from my only army they are my first. I got involved with Sisters becaused I liked the look and theme to the Sisters. Its cool to me that these ordinary women can stand against the vilest of foes and hold their ground even against overwhelming odds with just their faith, power armor, and a bolter. It makes them cooler than space marines in my eyes

Tau. I loved the idea of running an army of battlesuits across the field and popping open tanks with railguns.

Vanilla. SM.
They are simple to start out on. Both modeling wise(all are main stream) nd you can leanr new ways to paint.

Eldar. They look really good, are generally freaking awesome space ninjas, and are hard to play (thus fun and challenging).

Guard, i'm human and proud to lead my kin to victory

IG all the way. Tanks, Tank, and more tanks, alogn with giant tanks, and tanks with artillary cannons strapped to them, and tanks with giant flamer throwers or chemical weapons etc.
oh and lots of people with guns. with other vehicales thrown in.

Imperial Guard are my favorite and most played army, though I have Dark Eldar, Necron and Tyranids waiting in the wings. I choose Imperial Guard because of the modelling/converting opportunities, and because there's just something damn near elemental about an army of men and tanks. In a game of super-soldiers, unspeakable horrors and high-tech aliens, winning the day with riflemen and big guns is uniquely satisfying.

Dark Eldar:

New range of models were too good to miss. Very different playstyle to my previous Marine and Tau armies and thoroughly enjoyable to play.

Blood Angels! I want to bathe in the blood of my enemies. You know, the other side of khorne.

Chaos Space Marines primarily. I love the Alpha Legion. Plus daemons are just plain awesome. And nothing, but nothing beats The Three Stooges (my Obliterators).

Imperial Guard. I always found the *smartest* way to wage war was to sit back miles behind the lines shelling the crap out of the enemy. "I'm great at close combat," you say? Run your 30 men a mile forward to get to my tank lines first. Then if you blow past those, there are 125 entrenched men waiting with various forms of heavy weaponry pointed directly at you. even if you manage to survive long enough to hack your way through them, the artillery is still pounding... And you've still got a good 10 miles left to run.

GK Henchmen, no power armour. I wanted something different, a unique army to play, and I wanted the challenge of fielding a glass hammer force. Oh, and I wanted an army that at 1500 pts could reasonably fit in a dreadknight

Tau. Love playing the underdog army and love actually having a draw back in an army.

I chose chaos originally. But after all the black library books, I've decided I'm much more loyalist than I thought. with how Whiney and douchey the traitors are depicted as haha.

I started in the late second edition. First with lend armies, than I bought a used, painted Ultramarine Army (I liked the Ultramarines and their blue colour) on Alando (was bought by eBay later).

2000 points for 100 Deutsche Mark (~50€) for a TT-painted army, codizies, and 100 White Dwarfs was not bad.

However the Ultramarines were just to coulourful, almost clownish (like most things in 40k that days) for me (blue, wiht yellow rims and red bolters).

As soon as I saw my first Black Templars in the Codex Space Marine I decided to field them instead (nearly went for White Consuls or something like that) and that was a very good choice.

A lot of Templars players came when the Codex Armageddon came, and many also left with the bandwaggon. I am very satifsied. They fluff is great, their look is appealing, their style unmatched.

However I went for Tyranids too, because bugs are a nice army and a classical opponent for my Marines.

Later I started a small Imperial Fists detachement, because they are my facvorite Legion and that of my Templars. I like their fluff, style and look too.

Last but not least I started a Thousand Sons Army, because they are the most orderly Chaos Marines, some of the few Chaos factions that have a goal not just some random destruction or just decay.


Next on the line is a fluffy 1750 points Raven Guard jump army, in which every Marine shall be ,,perfect".


From the days of allowed allies, I still have 2 squads of Grey Knights, Sisters, Deathwacht and some Inquisitors.

Orks!
I've been in love with the common green skin (in all it's forms) for near 20 years now. Though Warhammer is my latest delving in to their particular culture.
I've always really enjoyed the simplicity of their approach, how pure of an experience they are, and how little B.S. Orks/Orcs have in their life paradigm.

Chaos Space Marines. I've gotten a little fed up with playing T3 armies with my current tactics. With my guard I just sit back and pummel the enemy with a ridiculous number of heavy weapons, but as soon as the bullet start flying their way or they're charged en-mass, their weakness shows. My sisters are similar too, they can pack a punch, yet their age really shows against new armies like Nids (and well that one game when I was facing 50 Termagaunts spawning a turn didn't do much for my confidence). With Chaos I can get away with my need to plod towards the enemy with a gun line without the fear of losing all my men to incoming fire. They don't such in assault, and their added level of craziness (two units of daemons plus two dreadnoughts) make them a fun army to play. The number of models that I have to paint is much lower than other armies, but not so low that I get pulled up for bentness either, and the fluff behind the characters means I can have fun converting them too.

Oh and the perverseness of having an army of heretics covered in purity seals and the hanging corpses of priests also does something dirty to me. ^^

There are so many armies i like, but i chose to play Tau. Huge guns and long range! i love being the underdog as well.

Space Puppies! I TRIED Dark Eldar, but their style didn't suit me (couldn't take decent beating and stay standing) so now I'm playing the Space Wolves!

I play Space Wolves because I am a goddamn Viking badass.

I run them forward, head on, and pummel the gak out of anyone in my damn way. That's how you do it. None of this sitting in the back with Long Fangs nonsense!

IG - Krieg They're shooty, humans and their models are awesome.

Eldar - they look cool

Grey knights mainly because I love the look of the models.

Also play daemons because they are awesome too.

Tyranids.

I used to play Salamanders in 3rd/4th edition, then went on a 4 year hiatus from wargaming. I always liked Tyranids, but there was aways some gap in the range with models I didn't like (2nd edition Hormagaunts were hideous, 3rd edition monstrous creatures were hideous, I left before they released them for 4th edition).

When I was considering getting back into 40k, I went to the GW website to see if they finally did a good range of Tyranids. Holy feth. They'd fixed all of the dud models from 3rd edition, including fantastic plastic kits for stuff I thought I'd never see in plastic (Carnifexes, Gargoyles, Raveners).

I didn't even care about the codex. I'd been told there were issues before I even bought my first models. But I've always been an aesthetics person instead of a competitive person. I need to like what I'm building and painting, and finally GW had an entire range that I liked completely. I can make a working list out of anything, but I can't make myself like painting models I don't like.

What do I vote? Army I play the most? Army I own the most of? Army I am currently playing? Army I am currently building up? Army I want to play next?

Maybe choosing more than one option would have been good for this poll.

I fell in love with the dark eldar fluff when my brother showed me 40k. Then i saw thier new codex and models and I was in love. Then i started to play them and I love how they play.Plus I now am srewing up everyones target priotory since each game a certain unit does something none of us expected (example was lilith seperated from her wychs and walked 6 inches away.She then ran through cover 6 inches to a squad of necron warriors.She charged them wiped them before thier attack.She then went on to soak up a unholy amount of shooting.)


Plus I love being my groups big bad wolf.

Tau for mobility and firepower, as well as the smug sense of superiority for using a crappy codex

Chaos. - I refuse to abide by the dividing of the codex and just say Chaos is what I collect.

Of course, in rules I have to abide by the divide of the codex (unless my opponent agrees to two force organizations from 2 different armies - that's how I get a bloodthirster skipping through battle with his best friend, my Chaos Lord.)

My armies are Chaos Marines, Daemons, Sisters of Chaos, Chaos Orks and Traitor guard. - And as soon as the renegades come out - I'mma want me some mothefucking cultists. - Th-Though... ...my traitor guard cover that really, don't they? - Dunno! - Depends what the codex'll hold.

GW seems strut by strut to be dismembering diversity and ability to convert some really crazy stuff. - Even some of the most loopiest looking races face some real restrictions.

Chaos Space Marines because Red Corsairs are cool. Being a Space Pirate has never been so darn awesome. I used to play Space Wolves but I find them to be bland compared to Chaos.

I play Daemons mainly. Partly because a nicely painted Daemon army looks very striking and partly for the somewhat unpredictable playstyle. I always go for daring deep strike moves to surprise people which thankfully work more often than not.

Grey Knights, i started playing them when it was the old codex. I loved the mystery around them and the Inquisition, the elite and underestimated power they walk with (i had 2 purifiers sweeping advance Farsight and his 7 man goon team of suits)

Allways stuck to the nids myself. I enjoy the fact that they aren't from the 40k galaxy.

Essentially I like their lore and their models. They are just so different from everything else.

I play Space Marines and Tau. Space Marines are the army with the most support, since almost everyone else plays them. I like them because I never have to fear being left back in the dust in the great Codex renewal race. I like Tau, on the other hand, because I like their equipment. I also enjoy many of their units. Finally, I like the Tau because they have an Orwellian sense of evil about them that amuses me. I think this poll might have given you more accurate results, by the way, if it was a multi-option poll. (I clicked Space Marines even though I play two armies, since they are my first and larger force.)

Blood Angels. I started in 2ed, but have never been able to paint my own minis*, so when I saw that they were completely red I thought to myself "Here's the army I'm going to play!"

* I have a horrendous nervous tremor in both hands, and I'm too much of a perfectionist to ever accept the results of my own paint work.

I play Tau now mostly.

I picked them up when they first came out because they were shiny and new and we hadnt had a new army in awhile.


I continue to play with them now because if I win or for that matter DRAW... It means im a better player =]

Even with a loss I dont feel bad because chances are it wasnt my fault it was Mat Wards =]

Imperial Guard. When I was first looking to play 40K it was a toss up between IG, SoB and Daemons. IG seemed to be the safest bet for a starting player since they have so many options and are fairly popular (and therefore well supported).

Once the postman drops off my little gift I'll be playing Daemons as well, though.

Blood Angels. I just liked the idea of an army that can jump across the battlefield and beat the living snot out of just about anything. Plus I love the look on the persons face when I tell them what my Death Company unit is packing.

Necrons, I got into them in Dark Crusade, the whole "tide of pitiless robots" thing seemed really awesome.
I picked them up around the time the new 'dex came out, and I had the money to do so, and it turns out I actually liked the new fluff.

I play a Schola Progenium force using the IG codex because I am a brutal authoritarian. : )

This (Space Marines Vanilla) is my first army and I had either orks or SM from the starter set. Also it doesn't help me choose another army when "GW <3 SM"

I have quite a few 40k armies but my current main army, and one missed out on the poll, are my Black Templars. Main reasons being: 1) I hate to paint, so spray black and add some simple colours.
2) Fluff, sword wielding crusaders charging into battle heedless of the danger.
3) As a long term member of St John Ambulance, they share the same colours and pretty much same insignia.

Heavy power armor GK, I mean, hey. who doesn't think the idea of power armor,a storm bolter and a power weapon would be fun to kill some daemons in, right!?

When I first started I asked which army had the most tanks. That's the one I went with.

I got into Imperial Guard because of the basilisk, and I hated MSM tau suits. While I came for the artillery, I stayed for the infantry. Foot horde guard has a LOT of options, and because you're dealing with a lot of minis, you have very high-resolution durability (as in, you lose a smooth, regular amount of forces, rather than having a single set of rolls make or break your entire army), meaning that a guard foot horde lends a little bit of predictability to the player. This means that I can calculate odds more shrewdly than with other armies with fewer minis, which means I can be more brutally cold, calculating, and callous to my casualties and still come out victorious.

They may not be the most tactical army, but they are the thinking man's 40k army where it counts - in a game of dice, they have the precision ability to play the odds.

I've also played eldar (my first army) because they looked cool, but I did very poorly with them (as mentioned, my first army). I've also collected, but have yet to field CSM, I like troops, and CSM has always had a trump suit here, plus I like the insanity of the fluff and wouldn't feel too bad about losing with them, once again, for fluff reasons.

I decided to do Necrons because of their ease to paint and their play style. All those cool extras they can do is just a bonus since I started playing them.

Eldar, because as a martial artist, their discipline and dedication to the path's.

The Imperial Guard for three reasons.

1. They are standard humans fighting against all odds in a galaxy full of super powered beings. Homo Sapian Sapian ftw.

2. They are the most heroic imo. They lack a 3+ save and hypno indocternation to be fearless so when they stand and fight it takes more courage to do so.

3. Closest to a real world army. (Still not very close.)

Eldar.

I also liked elves in any fantasy setting, finesse and deadly elegance. Always cool. They're my first army and I'm returning to them now after having built my DA army. I'm best at playing with my eldar and I love the way they fight. Also, painting them again with my much improved painting skills is very pleasing.

I've played pretty much every 40k army except for Tau, but always come back to my chaos forces. I currently have 3 different chaos marine armies (Slaanesh, nurgle and khorne), but also have a chaos renegades army, plenty of chaos daemons, plus still have units from my Eye of Terror chaos forces as well. Currently also building a new Dark Eldar army, and considering redoing a new ork army after many years. No matter what else I play, though, chaos is my usual go to force 80% of the time. So out of 5 games I'll play with a different army once while playing chaos the other 4 times. Right now all I can play is chaos since I've sold off my non-chaos armies, except for the new ones I am working on now, but they aren't ready for table top time yet. So right now I am 100% chaos all the time.

I play Eldar currently.

I used to play Space Wolves in 2nd edition. Then I won a local tournament and six different people bought space wolves that very day. I played them all the way through 2nd, 3rd. 4th. and some of 5th edition. Then a guy showed up with a new space wolf force painted and converted better than I can hope to do. He opened a game store and displayed his massive space wolf army. For years now people have been coming in and looking at his force and wanting to play Space Wolves because of how he makes them look.

So with all of the people in my area jumping on to Space Wolf mania I decided it's time to quietly exit and get into something no one around here plays...Eldar. So I've been playing Eldar for almost two years now.

Imperial Guard. Who needs fancy gimmicks when all it takes is a few good bodies and some bad-assedry tanks to achieve victory?

I play BA/Flesh tearers purely because I sucked at painting reds and loved Gabriel Seth as a model though I still have rather large Ultramarine and Ork Armies =)

Dark Angels (for their style) and Black Templars (for their RAAAAAWR! close combat tactics). If I had to name the one faction that impresses and excites me the most, however, it would be the Tyranids.

Tyranids.

Orks- Because when i first read their codex and saw that painting red hot-rod flames on my "road warrior" style monster trucks made them go faster...that was all the motivation i needed.

I started with Eldar, but went to Chaos Daemons because I loved the models and have come to love the playstyle. There's just something awesome about watching a Bloodthirster with Fateweaver backup chew up GK paladin units.

Dark Eldar. High mobility, potent firepower. Maximum force brought to bear at any point of the battlefield you wish at any point you desire.

I'm lucky in that the group I've put together other the years plays with armies they think are cool rather than going into uber competitive army lists. Which is great as the armies I play are for their fluff rather than how good they are. I voted for Space Wolves as they were the first 40k army I began to collect back when I started in third edition, they're my biggest army points wise plus their just plain kick ass, and I play them how they're meant to be played i.e. getting stuck in and killing with the ever faithful chainsword.

I also play chaos renegades which are my close second favourite army, I use a meld of the undivided renegade list from the seige of vraks imperial armour books and the nurgle list for the zombies, with a few daemons dotted through the army. I'm hoping to get some pics up on Dakka of the force as just about every model in the army has been custom built out of various kits, and I love showing them off.

And Finally I have horde tyranids for their OM NOM NOM and an inquisitorial army that I don't play very much any more as I built them based on rules from the witch hunters codex, with indoctrinated forces and I don't like how the army has crossed over to the rules for the inquistion in the Grey Knights codex, so they're in dire need of a revamp.

I voted Chaos Space Marines as that is what my current art looks like. However it is actually a Fallen Dark Angels list with Deathwing and Ravenwing components. Since Dark Angels didn't get a choice I went with my looks.

Blood Angels. This was actually accidental. When I first started playing 40k and knew nothing about the fluff, my friend painted his marines blue. Not wanting to copy his color choices, I painted my marines red. I was informed that my red marines were Blood Angels. It sounded kinda cool so I went with it.

I have mainly played Angels of Absolution because of secret, secret. I've played since 1st ed. Started with Vanilla SM, then went Space Wolves and Eldar in 2nd ed, then started the AoA in 4th.

Stopped playing for a few years but now I'm back and I'm developing my first IG regiment (501st Nightside! Check out my P&M blog!), simply because I like the idea of hurling untold hundreds of men to their doom backed up with guns that don't really care WHO they kill. It's exhilarating because their general is a megalomaniac and they're just ordinary guys who have no choice - they can either die fighting for the emperor or in the saccharine mines of Deneb Secundus

I wish I knew some local ork players. I've NEVER fought Orks. Kinda like Orks.

Also - have begun collecting diseased Nurgle marines - won't paint them for ages. Too much guard to sort out.

Space Wolves, Just cause I love Wolves.

Eldar, because they looked cool when I was starting out.
Dark Angels, because I had a large pile of the models after a couple of starter boxes and a relative with limited knowledge of 40k got me a Battleforce for Christmas one year, so I decided to do something with them.
Regular Space Marines, because the Scouts and the Assault Marines don't fit in with my plan for my Dark Angels (and I have two Dreadnaughts and two Deathwing squads, so no Elites space left for the Scouts).
Dark Eldar, because I liked the new kits and because the concept of shooting from an open-topped skimmer appealed to me.
Grey Knights, because I wrote a kickass Inquisitor back in the hairy days of the 3e Codex and I didn't want to shelve all the old metal Grey Knights I've got lying around. Also because the concept of an aerial assault force in Apocalypse (flyer-Valkyries laden with Stormtroopers with homing beacons that deliver Deep Striking Grey Knights) was awesome.
Chaos Marines, because Tzeentch.

I play IG because they are the only Army that isn't super buffed by nonsense.

They are just regular schmoes in a vast galaxy and can hold there own against the worst of them. I also liked the fact that they relied on Armor and have the largest array of vehicles.

It was also my first Army and I didn't want to be like the majority of people and play space Marines

Tyranids-I like the idea of commanding the hoard and watched Starship troopers loads as a kid

Dark Eldar-Because the models looked great and I wanted a new playstyle.

Tau-I wanted a sci-fi army as opposed to all the fantasy type armies and who doesn't like the idea of mechs.

The only thing I like about the Starship Troopers movie is that you get to see what a Tyranid swarm would look like in full attack. The rest of the movie was kind of lackluster for me, but just watching the swarms enveloping that small outpost was worth the price of the DVD to watch it again and again and again.

I started with Chaos, but switched to Eldar fairly early on. The whole MEQ thing was fun at first, and can still be refreshing once in awhile, but the satisfaction of watching your army of specialists come together seamlessly to crush your foe really is beyond compare.

I also really enjoy the fluff of both armies. The plight of the Eldar is like poetic tragedy, while the sheer aggressive nature of Chaos is very appealing as well.

Imperial guard, or more specific death korps because i love their fluff and the imagery of trench warfare. i laso love artillery.

Necrons because well be honest with me who doesn't love robots.

Shame i cant make select two options. I chose daemons.

Previously, i have finished my Space Marine army, getting the various squads i want for my point level and decided to move onto something else...

...Daemons. Not to popular, or competitive (besides fatecrusher) but thats why i chose them. How often do you see people think, "Dam, i've never played this army. How am i going to play this one?". I also like some of their models, namely Skulltaker and Bloodletters.

Although my daemons army is small, 3 fully painted models to date (frikkin exams sucking away my time), these are the bad boys i'll be collecting for the immediate future. My space marines are, to all intents and purposes, 'shelved'.

I played Imperial Guard

Why? Because I like the Guard, and I wanted a break from power armour

Imperial Guard. Taking quantity over quality to a WHOLE new level....

Grey knights, because cheese is yummy, actually i havent played a game with them, just love the minis and i'm one of those people that cant play until they're all gussied up with paint, of course im rubbish at painting but thats a whole different kettle of fish

Tau, because shooting and killing stuff at range felt more natural than running up and knocking the gak out of your opponent

Sorry. When I put this up I wasn't aware of all the chapters of sm. I'm brand new to 40k.... so sorry to all my crimson fists and black Templar and salamanders (etc)
