Hi All,
I've been using this free program for a while to build lists for a range of wargames, as it works very well. I was surprised recently when most of one of my groups of friends hadn't even heard of it, so I have put up a review & screenshots on my website to spread the word:
http://gravengames.co.uk/battlescribe-roster-editor-review/
Is anyone else already using this?

I've never seen it used, but as long as the final list result looks nothing like the horrid abomination that armybuilder uses, then it should be fine.
Personally though, I'm a fine of good old calculator and a nice word document laid out nicely. My lists are clean, clear, and easily understood. Most of these programs are unnecessarily confusing and hard to read when the person building the list could just as easily do some basic math and write out an easily understood list.

That's actually what I like about this sofware, its clear and simple, & generates clear easy to read lists, while remaining relatively powerful.

I use it all the time, as it's Java based and thus works on my Mac.
Plus, of course, it's free and it automatically checks and downloads the current army lists from remote servers.
And it's quite easy to write files for - I've made a couple for mini-dexes and old Citadel Journal lists that are now part of the list download....

Use it all the time and personally write and maintain the Mantic lists.
Excellent software, highly recommended!
I'm not sure why people are still paying for Army Builder subscriptions at this point, especially after that whole debacle where they sent out legal threats to a variety of wargaming forums.

Where would I find 40k list repositories for it?

Alternatively, you can find pretty much anything you want just by typing "[name of whatever] battlescribe files" into google.
For example, someone had the Empire list for fantasy made within 2 days of the book being released.

I've only ever tried free list-builders, so I can't compare it to Army Builder, but BattleScribe wins, hands down, out of the freebies I've played around with. The interface is reasonably clean and straightforward, as are the lists it produces.
The only complaints I've ever heard about it, barring the occasional bug in downloading from repositories, are from people who couldn't find the army list/game system files, to begin with. It only took me a few minutes with Google to find the repository, which gave me everything I could need, except the new edition VC list for WFB, which appears to be rather hush-hush (Google only turns up requests for links on other forums - so, if anybody has a link they want to PM me, I'd be grateful ).

I just downloaded Battlescribe two days ago. Even for someone as computer-knowledge-average as myself it was easy to setup and find the necessary files.
Yesterday I was able to quickly and easily make a 3000 point army for a game of Warpath and with a few notes added for my own convenience, the printed roster was great for in-game reference.
Highly recommended!

I have always been a big fan of army builder. Is there an App for Battlescribe. I recently got an Ipad 3 for my birthday and no nothing of mac products. All I have ever used is an Ipod. I can't put Army Builder on my Ipad (dont know or if it is even possible) but this Battlescribe looks like a good alternate. Any help for the computer illiterate would be greatly appreciated.

There isn't a good solution to using an ipad for list building - aside from a calculator app and notepad.

I've used Army Builder since 2000. Back then it was kinda the only thing around. 2 years ago I got the newest edition of it, but once my 1 year of updates was done, I just bookmarked the updates page and checked it weekly on my own. I don't know why anyone would pay $40 just to save them a few clicks a week.
I'll have to check out BattleScribe, especially since AB doesn't work on Mac OS.

People are seriously misinformed about what the subscription is. You don't pay to use the software. Once you buy it, it's yours forever. What you pay for after the first year is automatic updates, which are optional. I don't pay a subscription and I update manually just fine. It's all of 3 clicks a month.

I will say, whenever I check lists for a tournament, I prefer battlescribe's list output to AB's, handsdown. Battlescribe outputs what you want, no more, unlike army-builder's mini codex packet of doom. That, and running it on a Kindle Fire makes it supremely easy to list-build for pick-up games in no time flat.

I use it on my PC and on my phone (it's available on the android market for free) And find it's pure awesome-sauce!
I especially love that it's on the phone, I can build lists during the commute to work and use them at games night without having to carry pens, paper, calculators, etc with me at all times.
Can't fault the program enough.
Only gripe I have is that the catalogues are community maintained, so sometimes you get errors that you have to work around (for example, the ork codex has an error where the painboy only costs 30pts, instead of 55 (nob+painboy upgrade)).

Amazing program. Makes it really easy to build lists accurately.
I think the best use is to manage lists easily, dropping upgrades and adding some while still maintaining accuracy and easy to see points total. I love making a list and then spending a few hours finagling it just right.
The only issues I have seen are that you sometimes encounter incorrect points values for upgrades. So I HIGHLY recommend checking the points by hand after you make a list the first time you use a codex in battlescribe, so you can catch the errors. It is really easy to fix them though, with the built in file editor, which is very easy to use as long as you can work a dropbox.
The mobile version doesn't have the same file editor though, so I haven't figured out how to correct the mistakes on my phone. But then again, I don't Know much about data files and the like.

Actually you don't own it. I had 3.0 & 3.1 and once 3.2 came out, it broke compatibility with previous versions (i.e. 3.1 could not read 3.2 data files). Ok, so I go to update and LW says I need to pay the 4-5 years IN ARREARS that I did not pay support for to be able to upgrade. This 4-5 years there was no support or updates to the AB software since they were pimping Hero and CardLab. Now they got this deal where you pay $30 and it covers you back. No thanks since I'd still be paying for support and updates that aren't provided.
I've used Battlescribe for a couple years now and it's great. Works on my PC and my Android phone.

Unfrotunately due to GW IP, getting a cohesive and constantly updated repo is kindda hard. I have many changes (Stormtalon, ...) that I made to my own repo that never see the day into the main one by randomhit. But it is a good start.

The Black Templar repo is wrong too. Terminator squads are 40 points on top of the 40 per model they cost. Along with some other problems it has. I am probably going to go through and remake the whole repo myself cause I am bored and want to put off homework.
Anyone know if there is a way to print the rules like on army builder or no? It woudl be awesome if things like say tank hunters was defined with what it does on a rules sheet. But this may not be possible, and could probably get people in trouble.

It is possible. Mine prints with all the rules. Look at CataloguesEditor executable.

I've been having lots of fun building some catalogues for Dropzone Commander ahead of its launch, but this is really one of those programs where you get out what you put in. Some of the files (like 40K) have had a lot of work put into them, with rules text, characteristics and validation etc, while others are just lists of units you can pick with some points costs.
Documentation on the catalogue editor is really shabby though, and the forums are too small to be of any significant use, so it boils down to either copying existing files or trial and error
still, it's a good program, and definitely worth the time to get to grips with

Post by: ruff
Yeah it took playing with the program to learn how to set the files up.. Then mostly it was shot in the dark.. The forums really suck, if your problem is not posted..

I wonder if there is a way to get better BFG files. They are all updated (which is absolutely amazing and awesome) - but the stats of the vehicles are not up. Its kind of like having a Space Marine in your list but not telling you the BS, WS, S, T, W, so on and so forth :/

All it takes is someone with the books to go enter the stuff, really not that hard.
Once I figured out you could add rules to the catalog, its rather simple in doing so.
Hardest part is getting it shared with others. not sure how often the site that hosts these files updates their files with older updated books (like if the book gets some fixes on the file)

GK and IG. Found lots of errors in the GK one. Just seems the rules aren't imputed. You know, Eternal Warrior, Fearless, stuff like that. The explanation and such. I'm using the randonhit.org repos.
I'll check some of the other catalogs. Great tool so far. Easy to learn. I'm already editing my catalogs! I don't even have facespace err.. iface err.. facebay... nevermind...

@Byte: lol. My repo has some updated GK stuff in there (notably the ability to take 2 Psycannon for every 5 paladins). I don't input rules info because I remember them all plus repeating them is kindda meh. I hope Jon (the creator BattleScribe) eventually implement linked items.
24892
Post by: Byte
True about the rules, it would be handy but not necessary.
The error messages kinda flake out when you give henchman 3 meltas and than add some storm bolters. Psycannon point value was off for Purifiers I think. Other small things.
Overall I dig it.
50028
Post by: leohart
Is it? I am pretty sure Psycannon point value is on the dot for Purifiers. It just includes the base cost into it. That way it takes one click instead of 2 to equip your squad.
24892
Post by: Byte
Opps, it was the strike squads. Had it for 30pts iirc.
50028

Which is still correct because it is the cost of the upgrade + the basecost. It may appears weird at first but once you get used to it, you will see that it saves a lot of clicking.

I can vouch for this excellent piece of software.
It does take a bit of getting used to for the point allocation.

It adds up correctly but can still trip you up

@Byte Ah it _should_ take you to the item in error. I'll have to fix that. The wrench icon is a modifier. Conditions come under modifiers. Your error means that some conditions have an entry selected in their drop down that for some reason doesn't exist in the catalogue. Unfortunately you're going to have to look through the catalogue to find the broken ones, sorry :(
@Xcaliber If you remove the repo URL, you will indeed stop it from updating On the desktop version, under Manage Data, you can also uncheck the box to prevent auto updates on startup.

Battlescribe has instructions on how to create your own repository with the help of Drop Box. http://www.battlescribe.net/help-dataindexer.html

So I am having a couple minor problems I can't seem to figure out
For BT you are required to have an emperor's Champ at 750 points, but may take him before there. How do I set the modifier to reflect that.
Also for commanders and chaplains, there is 2 different models in each option, can I set it they you add one or the other (but not both), but allow you everything else like options and wargear only to be added once in the catelogue, with modifers changing what needs to be changed?

@sparkywtf: You can add a condition/modifier that increase and max_selection to 1 if there is at least 750 points in the roster.
Typically, in order to make two entries exclusive to each other, create an entry group that has max_selection 1, put these entries in there with max_selection 1.

The main issue I have with it is that I can't figure out how to have 1 profile for a weapon, for example if I have a missile pod entry for a commander, I have to have a separate missile pod for his bodyguard and I end up with 2 profiles on my print-out.

Okay I got the exclusive entries to work, I just can't seem to figure out modifiers yet. I think I will mess with them after the rest is done (and gotta get good with them when it comes to wargear! lots of terminator only options)
Also I have to give you props if you actually made your repos yourself, because I have spent 2 hours today just on the commander HQ for BT, and I still have wargear options to finish and modifiers (for later).

Nah, I based mine on the one distributed by randomhit. And my repo doesn't have wargear information and such. There is a gentleman on randomhit who has a repository with wargear and special rules fully kitted out. I only include options in my repository.
Plus, BT is a very old codex and thus its options are rather complicated.

I've been working on the Space Marines, Imperial Guard, Eldar, and Sisters of Battle (the armies we have around the house).
I'm likewise working on an Eldar Corsair data file, and have it done, and think I've ironed out the bugs.
The Space Marines are mostly done (and greatly improved over the RandomHit file, i.e. actually having weapons stats and special rules), and I have added as many FAQ'd changes and 6th updates as I can. I've likewise included the Stormtalon Gunship.
Likewise, I've added doubling of FoC choices at 2000 points, triggered by selecting additional troops and HQ choices.
The scheme mostly seems to work, but there may be edge cases.
The other three, so far, mostly just have the Fortifications added.
I think my index may not quite work right (it is Dropbox hosted), so I've sent the link to Jon to debug.
I'll provide the link, just in case:

I've been making a Tau catalogue for myself because the one I acquired from randomhit was too messy.
If anyone would like it, I can upload it to a file host and share it with you. It requires a knowledge of the codex mainly because I can't get the editor to treat each suit individually in regards to its modifiers. Although now I'm thinking that if I give each suit it's own armoury section it will. Like maybe I'M not treating each suit individually. Gonna try that tonight

I updated mine to include an option for adding an extra detachment (available at every 2000 pts). This guarantees that the requirement of FOC is always correct. I believe that this is better than automatic increment when one is choosing more than the number of troop slots, ... because it handles all edge cases.
Oh I wish for the day when we can finally have some kind of collaboration going on with these repository.

I liked Battlescribe, but I have to admit that I liked Army Builder better - to the extent that I was willing to pay for it. I'm not sure if this got fixed or not, but honestly the biggest reason I decided to go with AB over Battlescribe was the simple fact that Battlescribe said I had an illegal list when I built my 30-man Ork Boyz mob to have 3 rokkits and a nob. Evidently having that nob instead of a 30th boy doesn't allow me to throw in a third special weapon.

@Locclo @ruff
Data files are really the Achilles heel of these kinds of apps (even for AB I would say, though they've had a lot more time for their data files to stabilize).
After I received a certain email I had to stop hosting data files with the application. They now get handled by various community groups. Randomhit do a fantastic job (and work really hard) to keep data files up to date and any problems usually get fixed pretty quick. Just make sure you click the update button from time to time to update your files.
One other thing, the desktop version has the editors included to create/modify/fix data files. They're pretty easy to use, so if you find a problem with a file it should be quick to fix yourself if needs be.
I've got a few things up my sleeve for making sharing data files between users a bit easier, but it needs to wait until I finish adding allies support (working on it as we speak...).
50028
Post by: leohart
@Locclo: BS has a very nice community that is quick at fixing things. I understand that you went for AB and I respect that, but check us out once in a while, I am sure you will find many new things.
And for those errors, try pinging the guys that maintain your repository. They fix it in a jiffy.

Just downloaded it on my iPad, a slick tool and well worth the $2.99. Nice work!
For those hate'n on Army Builder a couple quick points:
- It's been available on Mac for a couple of months now.
- It's designed to be both a list builder AND a player aid, including all the quick reference you need to play the game, which is why the print outs are more detailed. However you can flip some settings for leaner print out options as well if you'd like.

@rigeld2 It depends quite a bit on your connection. When I tested with an iPod touch over WiFi I think it took about 30 seconds.
It not only needs to download the files, but unzip them and check whether they are in the right format. If they aren't it needs to upgrade the files. This process can take a bit of time.

I've corrected/improved a couple things in the GK roster. and I'm wondering how to incorporate those into the release. I forget where I specifically grabbed it from and can't check while at work, but I believe it's one of the "big" files. Are these generally maintained by one person that I should simply email?

The randomhit 40k repository just sat there trying to add it for 40 minutes. The PC version added it in about 15 seconds. edit - apologies I was doing one key thing wrong. I was hitting Update data without hitting the dirty great '+', so it was infinitely trying to update nothing. It now works. Just a note if the developers are reading this, you might want to add in a fix where if no repository is actually in the list, it doesn't infinitely try to add one. Especially when theres no cancel button and you need to power the whole device off to get out of the loop.

Hey guys. I've had a quick look through but I couldn't see it, and a google search hasn't found anything. I'm currently working on my own files (edited versions of the ones from Randomhit), generally doing tidying or just personalising them, as well as adding in many many Forgeworld items into the Imperial Guard file. I've just updated the WH40K gamesystem to support 6th ed changes too.
Anyway, to the point. Does anyone have a catalogue for the Ork Dread Mob army list from Imperial Armour 8 - Raid on Kastorel Novem?
Cheers,
Mike

Quick question about how the roster works.
Lets say I set a unit size at 10. Then I tick up the inclusion of a champion or other special character attachment that appears in that unit list.
Does the total for the unit now equal 11 mini's, or is it still set by my original unit size of 10, and the character simply replaces one of the default troopers.
I'm assuming the second option as that makes sense however just wanted to verify if this matches others expectations, thanks.

Post by: Chrysis
It's the second one, or at least that's been the case in the lists I've played with. It's quite possibly list dependant, so you may find that other lists handle champions differently.

Post by: -Loki-
It depends on how the author designed the list. For Tyranids, a Broodlord is added as an additional model, as evidenced by it being spearate from the squad model count, and costing 60pts (the cost of a Genestealer + Broodlord upgrade). Same with a Tyranid Warrior with heavy weapon, it's actually added as a whole new Warrior attached to the squad.

I've seen some variation. In the case of Eldar Exarchs, the codex specifies a +12 point upgrade to exchange an Aspect Warrior for an Exarch. Whoever did the Randomhit file didn't bother to implement the conditional logic[i](i.e., decrement aspect warriors if exarch) so the roster ends up indicating the wrong number of models. I've fixed this in the updated file I host.

Just downloaded and started playing around with it, definitely works well if a little clunky. The Tau one in particular is a bit odd when you're playing with different suit configurations and team leaders and whatnot. Overall though it's a solid replacement for Army Builder.

Post by: Surloch
So really it sounds like the more effort the person who built the file put in, the better / easier it will be to create a list
I'm liking it so far, got my data from the Randomhit index and apart from it crashing all the time when selecting items or special additions it's worked well. Again, it will probably turn out to be a fault in the list (Lizardmen) and not the app.

Bought BS Mobile Pro for my Kindle Fire and loved it. Broke the Fire (dummy me , no replacement plan) and just replaced it with a Fire HD. When I went to download my apps to the new kindle, noticed that BS was missing from my 'cloud.' After going to 'manage your kindle,' I was a bit surprised (both Android OS, right?), and disappointed, to see that the Fire HD wasn't compatible with BS (or vice versa).
Any chance of a Fire HD compatible version in the near future?

It really wouldn't. Modern LCD/LED panels still power black pixels, so the power difference between black and white is literally negligible.

Even OLED still uses power to display black. Yes, it uses less than a normal LED, but OLED panels aren't widespread enough for me to call them "modern".

rigeld2 wrote:but OLED panels aren't widespread enough for me to call them "modern".
Sorry I was under the impression that they didnt use any power to activate a black pixel, and did so by just switching that pixel to 'off'.
And they're very widespread in the instance the person you replied to was talking about. Almost all mid-high end cellphones and tablets operate OLED and AMOLED. Why would OP be concerned about battery life on a computer or TV screen?
also;
The amount of power the display consumes varies significantly depending on the colour and brightness shown. As an example, one commercial QVGA OLED display consumes 3 watts while showing black text on a white background, but only 0.7 watts showing white text on a black background.[10] Because the black pixels actually turn off, AMOLED also has contrast ratios that are significantly better than LCD.

As I understand it, only the white text would draw power non?

@anfie: I download battlescribe from the website. I used my repository. I hit the Update button. I create a new roster with SW. I don't see any error.
I would recommend that you look in your battlescribe folder and make sure there are files in the gamesystems folder and the catalogues folder AFTER you ran battlescribe and let it updates from the repository.

Re the errors you're seeing, a couple of things to try.
1) Delete your data files and re-download from your repo (just in case one has been chewed up for some reason),
2) I think one or two v1.13.00b data files have made it into the wild... The new file format in this version cannot be opened by v1.12.xx and you'll get errors like that. On the desktop it should notify you that the data file is not compatible though.
v1.13.00 (with allies support) will hopefully be available sometime in the next few days - I'm just waiting for Apple to approve it for the Appstore...

I tried deleting the game files and catalogues a few times and it made the error go away but when I created a roster it was empty (no HQ, elite, troop options appeared).

@azreal13 I am not having that issue, it seems to only insist on 1 HQ and 1 troop.

Post by: Maelstrom808
Yeah I'm having issues where if I create a list with more than one detachment, it starts acting wonky:
- It still gives you an error that you need to select the minimum required HQ/Troops even after you have selected them. This can happen for one or both detachments
- The buttons to increment an option (such as the number of marines in a unit) will either not work at all, or will not display the proper number you have selected until you click on that line in the current selections window.
- This happens with most combinations of catalogs, but not all. From Leohart's depository for example, Necrons as a standard detachment and CSM as an allied detachment works fine as far as I can tell. If you swap them and make a list with Necrons as the allied detachment and CSM as the standard, you start getting some of the issues I described above.
If you run a single detachment, it seems to function fine with no issues.

Is it possible to make lists for Infinity using Battlescribe? I'm wondering since Infinity uses two limiting factors (you get a certain number of points and a certain number of SWC) and every unit has a bunch of different load-outs.
25580
Post by: Maelstrom808
SWC?
EDIT: Okay, I downloaded the rules and had a quick look at how you build lists. It should be possible to create a BS system for Infinity, but you'll run into the issue where it doesn't really support a system of "sub-points" such as the SWC. You can have it calculate and display how many SWC are available to you, but if something costs more than 1 SWC, I don't think you would be able to have BS actually limit how many you can take.

Hey all,
I know the updated file format has caused a few problems here and there (most of the problems were lurking in the old files, it's a case of BattleScribe being more sensitive to them). Things should improve as data file authors get a chance to fix things up - the editors will flag any issues.
Anyway, to the point: I've added a "delete all data" option on the menu of the Manage Data screen (on mobile). If you're having problems, a quick way to (hopefully) fix it would be to use that to clear your data before downloading your files fresh from your repo.
Hope that helps :-)

I wonder if I've mucked something up. until today, I used the data file from randomhit.org, but I just changed over to using leohart's ( http://dl.dropbox.com/u/565769/40KCatalogues/index.xml) because it seemed more up to date. when I loaded up my roster file, I got a message that a few selections were automatically removed (weapon selections and such), but that was quick to sort out.
now, when I mouse over weapon options and such (e.g., boltgun, multi-melta, etc) it no longer gives me a popup with the weapon stats; just the weapon name. hull points for each vehicle are empty, though their other stats appear. when I click view roster, the rule summary section at the bottom is blank even though I've selected the rule summary option in layout options. this is all for codex: space marines, btw.
is this an issue with the data file or something else?

I don't know how comprehensive that catalogue is, but trying to use a roster in one catalogue when it was made in another (even if they have a common background) will frequently lead to issues. Especially with the data file structure changes, two different people fixing the file could have fixed it different ways (read: have different GUIDs).
Have you tried a brand new roster?

Just downloaded this so maybe someone can help me, but I don't understand this catalogue business at all. It says search for repositories but just goes to a Google search where I don't actually know what I am looking for.
It's really frustrating as all the help files don't really explain it, they just tell you that you need data repositories and that they are a collection of data files made by people on the net. Where do I find them? How do I know if they are good? What on earth do I do with them?
50028
Post by: leohart
Step 1: Find a repository link. This typically ends with .xml
Step 2: Paste it into your Android/iOS/Desktop Battlescribe under Manage Data/Repository
Step 3: Hit the Add/Plus button
Step 4: Refresh.
Step 5: Try creating a roster.
How do you know if they are good? One of the followings
1- You already know the rules and point cost since you own the books. Thus, you would know if something is right.
2- You know that the person who maintains the catalogue is actively updating it.
3- You just try it out and see if it matches the cost in the book.

Right, I got all that from the help files. But my point is when I click the 'search for repositories' button, it brings up a google search, and it's just all forums with discussions or individual data files for a single army. None of which ended in .xml might I add. Is there not an overall file for the game's data itself or something? There is just not enough explained. With Army Builder it was so simple as it was all encoded in and the programme found everything for you.
EDIT: Just saw the link you posted above for those files by Kn1ght. They are all 5th edition files though, or is that just in reference to when the Codex was released and not the game edition?
EDIT 2: Got it working, thanks.

That step right there. Hit the plus button. I don't know if they've added it, but when I got the first version, there was no warning saying 'hey, moron, that plus button? push it'. So I sat there for hours wondering why the repository was taking so long to add, and it was basically stuck in a loop.

Post by: TheLionOfTheForest
Well considering I downloaded the XML file listed above and just perusing the BA list I can see that it's incomplete. Not worth the $3 if I cant build a list with it due to missing wargear and quirks like not being able to just buy certain squad upgrades. Or only one of an upgrade when you should be anle to buy 2. Or not being able to just purhase heavy weapons for a dev squad without it auto adding in another marine.
Guess I just have to wait for GW's sure to be overpriced army builder app/program.
Edit~
It can't add a heavy weapon to a devastators squad without adding in an additional cost for a marine, so one ML costs 24 points. I could do a pen and paper list with less effort, less frustration and less errors.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with pen and paper.
Once you are used to the way a catalog is setup by the catalog maintainer (not Battlescribe), I am sure you will find Battlescribe to be a very useful program. Like other posters have said. It's free and you can edit the catalogue to your heart's content if you believe there is an error with it.
34242
Post by: -Loki-
Yeah, the biggest issue with Battlescribe is different people make the catalogs, which means different people have different ways of doing it. A great example is as above, adding upgrades as a full squad member + upgrade. The Tyranid list I use does this, and it took me a few minutes to wrap my head around it. I never thought anyone would think of it this way. Another option is to just grab the full PC version and make your own catalog. You can then build whatever you want into it - even build in a full stat summary for everything in your selected army. I really want to get around to doing it myself for Tyranids and even try doing it for Infinity, so people aren't bound to the Devil Team builder. Also I'm a list changing fanatic, and being able to do it on my phone at the shop would be great for Infinity.

I planned on adding all the Tyranid stuff to a catalog but my PC decided that it would rather start smoking than allow me to do that. Since I can't edit catalogs from my iPad...

I just wanted to get in touch with any of you currently hosting data file repositories.
The latest update with the improved Data Indexer on desktop and the "share data" functionality on mobile has been working towards an important goal: Helping new users get good, up to date data files with minimum fuss.
It's easily the biggest problem new users face, and I think it's prevented a lot of people using BattleScribe at all. It's also an issue for existing users who would like to see their data files kept up to date*.
To that end, I've posted on the Randomhit forum to try and start some discussion with file hosts on how best to expose their hard work to as many BattleScribe users as possible. Basically I think some kind of central index of data file repositories would be extremely useful.
I'm really interested in feedback from anyone who hosts data files - on Randomhit or elsewhere - about how I can best support them and how we can get your data files used by as many people as possible.
Your input is invaluable
(* That's not to say the authors of the files aren't keeping them up to date - in fact you do a fantastic job! It's just that updated files won't be accessible to users if they aren't in the repo they're using - often the main Randomhit one)
I posted on the Randomhit forum over here: http://catalogue.randomhit.org/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=207 or you can get hold of me via Facebook/Twitter/Google+ (links in signature). I'll keep an eye on here too.

An issue that's popped up for me recently has been with the randomhit full distribution Vampire Counts 8th edition list. On the mobile app, it won't see the Battle Standard Bearer options for hero Vampires and Wight Kings, but on the PC version, it sees them fine and all corresponding banners.

After hearing about this app on Noobhammer, I can't get it to work! The big problem is about the blasted data files! The only thing it says. Is that you need to find them, but there isn't squat about what you are looking for or how to get it to load. Since the help is so minimal, I am not even sure if I am finding the right things. When I do find what appears to be a data file there isn't even any feedback on whether it is one or not.
I hate programs that aren't clear about even the most basic things needed to use them. A simple "generic" data file included with the install would have been very helpful as a start!

while I empathize with you regarding the difficulty of being able to locate data files, keep in mind that this is not the programmer's fault. for copyright reasons, and to avoid the legal wrath of GW, the authors of battlescribe can't to link directly to data files that contain any GW content (e.g., point costs, unit rules, etc). if they did, GW would sue them out of existence in a heartbeat. that's why they have to be so vague about it. if you poke around on the battlescribe forums, someone will point you in the right direction. it sucks, but that's the reality :(

I just want to say how much I love the mobile app. Used it last weekend when I went to play a game. It makes everything so quick and easy.

I've used battlescribe regularly and i think its is amazing, all armies are there, including chaos dwarfs and work quickly and efficiently, only downside, most stats and special rules dont appear in the html version :(

You must not have really read my post. I said a "GENERIC" file. One that does not apply to any game (or maybe to a fictional one) but "SOMETHING" that would at least give a file that would give a basis for what I would be looking for on a download or whatever. As far as "finding" some data files I think I found some, but nothing would load and since I didn't really have a clue what I was looking for and had no info and the feedback I was getting from the app was minimal and wouldn't stay visible long enough to read, I quit wasting time and dumped the app.
That's OK though. As I have only been messing with GW stuff for about a year and a half, and since their model pricing has become even more ridiculous than it was previously, I am really considering dumping the load of unbuilt kits I have and walking away from the insanity.

Google Battlescribe Data Files and it's the first result.

Personally though, I'm a fine of good old calculator and a nice word document laid out nicely. My lists are clean, clear, and easily understood. Most of these programs are unnecessarily confusing and hard to read when the person building the list could just as easily do some basic math and write out an easily understood list.
I have to agree with this. While I am not incredibly experienced on the table, I have found that it really helps my build when I know where every point is going. That way nothing is wasted. I bet this program would be great for quickly trying out different lists though.

Just to say to Dakka, Im currently working on creating catalogues for the fan-made "Warhammer Armies Project" books ( Linky) which may interest some people, and also want to throw out that if anyone has any issues or errors with any of their lists/data with BScribe, give me a shout and Il be happy to take a look at it for you...

Yeah, the mobile app is pretty awesome.
The PC version, not so much. Works fine, saves fine (or appears to) and then when I try to re-open a saved list, it only has part of the file.

@Insaniak: I've only had that happen when building lists with allied detachments and there is a thread on the BS forums that explains a workaround that can correct it until the author gets the new version released.

New PC version of Battlescribe is up now with dice tools similar to the mobile one. Also similar to Android app, now has a paid "Pro" version (currently £ 0.99) and a free ad-supported version.
Looks like he did fix the error with loading rosters with multiple forces and also added the ability to add/remove forces AFTER creating a roster.
Can only purchase the license with Google Wallet though? Any chance of adding PayPal to that Jon?

Downloaded and tried it out just now after seeing this thread.
Noticed a few errors with the Death Korps Siege Regiment list as alot of the stuff either have the incorrect points listed or none at all.

As previously mentioned in this thread, the author of BS doesn't (and can't for legal reasons) create or maintain the catalogs. They are created/updated by individual BS users and depending on where your particular catalog came from there may be a forum where you can address errors/omissions in those.
Also, using the included catalog editor, you can go in and make changes yourself.

I've found the catalog editor and made corrections.
Only (minor) drawback I've found with BS.

Good stuff.
If you send the corrections to the list's writer, it's less of a drawback for the next person.
