Including the FW gubbins and bits to make the big suit it comes to a grand total of £423.95 (£170.50 for the Crisis suits alone) Ouch! So glad I didn't pay anywhere near to retail for that.

My regular SW 1750pts list comes to £246.50. This of course does not factor in things you cannot get from the GW site, such as Cyclones for Wolf Guard and extra Missiles for LFs, so this is only an approximation.

My Daemons 1750pts list comes to £329.00.

I don't even want to calculate what my Orks come to.

What do we do if we have models in our armies that aren't sold at regular GW? Because my Ogre army has a couple of converted bulls to make butchers, Rhinoxes, and more than one Limited Edition Bruiser

I just used the retail equivalent. My Arjac in my SW list was converted long before the FC version was released, but I still slapped an Arjac in there, as the purpose of this exercise is to find out how much your army would cost if you bought it from scratch from GW direct.

I think the idea is just to create your army with models that are available from GW's site. So no FW, but conversions are okay.

Land Raider Crusader for 40 pounds, OMFG!!! I got one from e-bay for 23 pounds 1,5 year ago and was complaining that I needed to do some extra work on it to set it right. I am now glad that I took it.

A bit of Off-top. You can always do a nice Late War Flames of War mechanised list for under 60 pounds (if You do some shopping around and use alternative plastic miniatures).

PS - re the sentinals, I do love the models and find they work really quite well in numbers, but £111 well? I'm not so sure I would buy all of those now!

I remember starting out 40k with 3rd edition. At that time it worked out at around £10 per 100 points (on average)

Now its looking more like £20-£25

This latest price rise is the straw that broke the camel's back for me. I've already sold my tau, my sisters are up for sale (PM me if you're interested - ditto my fantasy dwarfs). I only need one model to finish my dark eldar which I intended to keep as my 6th edition army, but now I'm thinking I can get an Infinity rulebook and either a Kings of War or Dropzone Commander rulebook for the same cost as the new BGB, so I don't know how long I'll keep playing 40k for.

Even my mate with 20,000pts+ of 40k has lost interest now - he wanted a few bits for his Necrons and can't justify the expense. When someone that invested says no more, its time to move on.

And to make it worse, they are still metal, once they get hit by finecast i expect the price to go up more.

No problem. I nearly had a heart attack when I saw the $2 for evey point bit.

The cost is certainly a lot. Its difficult to start a new 2000pt army and looks like you need to build it bit by bit if buying direct. Lucky the Grey Knights aren't going to cost me too much otherwise I probably wouldn't have started.

I have never needed to deploy the entire 4 Companies before, Only ever deployed them in companies and most of the time they are line defenders. Don't need pods if you are just holding positions.

So can we assume that an average sized army (1500-2000) is going to cost roughly $500-$800?
This hobby isn't cheap, but wow, I never realize how expensive it really was till I started looking at it like this.
This is of course not including hobby materials such as paints, tools, etc.
And of course this is assuming worst case of retail purchase with no discounts, second hand, scratch builds, etc.
All said and done, this is very enlightening.

I'm wondering how you get 4 Razorbacks with only 3 Tactical squads in the list.

I priced up my Terranwing list if it was run using normal models and got:

The list is about 2.5k points and came out at about £400. In reality almost everything is converted, so it might actually be 1.5 to 2x that, but I did get quite a lot of stuff on e-bay to mitigate costs.

Its taken me a year and a half so far to build and part-paint the army, so thats about £25/month on average. Not that expensive (and it will last forever)

Are you kidding? I'm going to go you one further.

Add up all your models. Then add up your rule books, codexes, WDs, FW books, painting/modeling guides. Also put in your modeling supplies, third party bitz, painting supplies, paints, washes, inks, and scratch building materials. THEN add in the silly stuff, like tool storage containers, mini cases, game tables/platforms, dice, measurement tools, rolls of game surface. Lastly add in snacks, gas, beverages, and tournament fees.

I'm guessing I have several thousand tied up in it. I wont even fathom a guess.

Did I miss anything?

Then tally up the number of hours you spent on the hobby. And do the math to find out how much cash per hour of fun you got. Compare $/fun with dropping quarters at the arcade or seeing a movie.

My two most recent armies. I did not pay full retail for the Red Hunters but I did for the GK at my old FLGS the day they came out. I think I got 4 boxes of PA GK the same day but I wanted to put two 2000 point armies.
