Hello All!
This will be my first Dakka P&M blog, based around my Luna Wolves army, Horus has easily been a favorite character of mine since I got into the game a few years ago and started reading the fluff, I decided to go with the timeline of right around 63-19, when Loken had just been inducted into the Mournival and they were all good friends still.
I made a significant sized order from Forgeworld and have recently finished assembly on a good majority of them. Just waiting on a few bits in order to finish. However I will post the pictures I have so far with many many more to come. Sorry about any low quality stuff, they're from my phone as I am working on a full "studio" setup for taking high quality pictures.
This will be a constantly expanding project and the main focus of my Warhammer efforts from now on, I absolutely love the fluff behind them and have made a commitment to stick with it. I will be building Garviel Loken's 10th company, along with detachments from 1st Company (Justaerin and Catulan Reavers)
Painted pictures to come.
This is 40/40 troops that I currently have, all assembled and ready for primer.
Falkus "Widowmaker" Kibre and The Justaerin -- I chose to go with Falkus leading these guys because Abaddon will probably included later (once FW releases the model). I also love the comment that Torgaddon joked with Abaddon that he let Kibre lead the Justaerin because he was too big to fit into a suit of terminator armor.
No one specific here, just a little fun posing and the use of a head from the MKIV command sprue.

Are there any pictures that I can't see? Anyway, nice to see a Luna Wolves plog.
Though there is a section for P&M blogs where I suppose this should be.

Sorry, I made the original post before realizing that I didn't have the links for my dakka gallery. Pictures added! --- GRRRR! Sorry I thought I put this in the blog spot... if a mod could please move it that would be great!

I actually ordered before the legion bundles were released, and probably would have ordered separately anyway. I have 20 Legion and 20 normal MKIV marines, along with assorted bolters, that way they are not all the exact same.

I may be wrong, but I thought in the books at the time you are mentioning that the Luna Wolves had greyish/white armor with green trim. Then when renamed to the Sons of Horus they switched to their green armor.
It was only after they fully turned to chaos and fled into the eye of terror that they switched to black armor and started calling themselves the Black Legion.
Did the termies always have black armor and I just missed that part? In any case they are nicely painted and the models look fantastic. Good stuff!
64336
Post by: Brokksamson
Yes, actually anyone from 1st company has Black and Gold, even Kalus Ekkadon's Catulan Reaver Assault Troops are portrayed in black and gold because they are 1st company, and The Justaerin (Abbadon/Falkus Kibre's Terminator Squad) are Black and Gold.
My Normal troops will have white armor with black trim, along with my Dreadnought.
Also, they changed to black and gold after turning to Chaos to signify their failure in letting The Warmaster die, and became The Black Legion. Automatically Appended Next Post:
Automatically Appended Next Post: Took a break from Justaerin in order to finish my Contemptor, I have Luna Wolves decals, just haven't added them yet, will added them for the round of nice pictures to come at a later date. I filed down the Aquila on his chest and replaced it with an "Eye of Horus", and added the XVI on the lower left side of his chest, I liked it a lot on the Forgeworld DG Dread so I just made it.

I Love your stuff and I'm working on my own Luna wolves squad so this gives me some good ideas and tips. I'm going to attempt to freehand all the half moon wolf head shoulders and see how t goes. Although I was also debating making it out of green stuff.

Post by: Brokksamson
I found a Luna Wolves decal sheet that someone made, and had a buddy of mine print them on some real thin vinyl, gonna see how that works out. Thanks for the compliments!
64336
Post by: Brokksamson
I come bearing more finished models!
I added the Luna Wolves graphics to the Dreadnought -- Left shoulder is Chapter and Left leg displays that he is a Veteran of the War for Luna.
Up next is Falkus "The Widowmaker" Kibre, Captain of The Justaerin. I wanted to build him because he is played out to be almost as important as Abaddon in terms of The Justaerin, and I will have an Abaddon model.
And lastly for now, Landraider Redeemer of the Legio XVI.
Hope you enjoy!

Yeah, I just had the kit sitting around, I will also be building a MKII-B at some point in the near future. The Redeemer is going to be for my 6th edition list where they play as Space Wolves.
Thanks Shin! Always nice to hear!

Hey mate, just a heads-up, the Justaerin also had mixes of red on their shoulder pad insets. Maybe splash them up with a bit of red too? Just as a little hint as well, the Justaerin was just the name given over to the Terminators of the 1st, the 1st being led by First-Captain Abaddon. I would think of Kibre being a lieutenant of Abaddon in charge of the Justaerin. Any chance on you doing some Catulan Reavers? Also, you see those new Justaerin termies on FW? They may be of use to you.

I'm so jealous of this army. I wish i had the funds to make an entire pre-heresy army with forgeworld models. I will definitely be following this and keep envying you... Cheers
64336
Post by: Brokksamson
Haha thanks Question.
Hey Crimson! Thanks, I couldn't remember if they had the red, Falkus is actually listed as Captain of the Justaerin, and Abby is 1st Captain as far as I have seen, there is even a passage about it, they say Torgaddon teased Abby that he let Kibre lead The Justaerin because he ( ab) is too big for a suit of TDA. Yes I do have plans for Kalus' Catulans! As well as Abaddon and Loken when they are released, and of course Horus, this is going to become my main army. Automatically Appended Next Post: Some more for the day. I fixed the Justaerin that I have complete so that they display the red shoulder.
Also finished another one, this time with a Chain Fist.
And a group shot of the 6 that are complete so far. This time with the proper red shoulder.

Well, After some deep thought, I am actually going to be changing over to Sons of Horus, with all the stuff that is coming out for them branded as Sons it just makes sense, luckily I have another Phobos Pattern Landraider that can be painted up and be timeline correct. I also haven't painted any of my troops so that makes things a little easier considering The Justaerin didn't change.

Here is a test piece for my SoH colors, I really like how it turned out, it's not the Forgeworld and not the Index Astartes (which looks like an Andes mint), but I think i'm going to test with a different mix, more towards the sea green.

hahahaha, well thanks! I love the fluff behind them and Horus, more to come that won't be black and gold
Also thanks all for compliments on the color, it took a little bit of time to get it mixed properly, but now I have a consistent formula and a pre-mixed batch! should make things go smoothly.

I actually followed an older tutorial but I can't seem to find it off hand, I know it was from Warseer.
the "green" color is close to 50/50 of Vallejo Panzer USMC Tank Crew (green), and GW Astronomican Grey (old color, not sure on the new name).
I kind of added a little more green, little more grey etc until I felt I had the right one, so it's probably not exactly 50/50.

Post by: The Dark Apostle
to be frank: these are exelent! honestly brilliant, the best sons of horus ive ever seen!
my long answer is this: WOW, your paint scheme is amazing and you put all the right colours in the right places! the glow on the plasma is amzing! not too much, not too little! your sergeant guy poiting is really good, and its a brilliant model to use, im thinking of adding a cape to mine and having him wield a power sword in his bolter hand to make him look better and have a cool kind of bracing for the enemy yet ordering his troops kind of pose, for your tanks, you could either weather it a lot using sponges (look up templarcrusade01's world eater fellblade for a quick way of making a dirty tank) or keep it clean, your choice.
im guessing your excited about getting loken and abbadon, who will lead your army?
brilliant, just amazing, subscribed! Automatically Appended Next Post: also, do you know a GW only way of doing a similar paint scheme?
64336
Post by: Brokksamson
Thanks Apostle! that's great to hear and I am overwhelmed with all the compliments. My tanks are going to be fairly dirt, something along the lines to match the troops but I am debating on putting some weathering along the bottoms to match the gray tone to the bases on my troops etc.
I already have Loken and Abaddon on order haha, Loken will be the main leader of my force no doubt. Abaddon is going to ride around in a Spartan with 5 Justaerin (actual "Justaerin" models) honor guard w/ Mutli Melta and power axes, as well as 5 normal cataphractii Justaerin w/ Dual Lightning Claws. In 6th I play them as Space Wolves and Loken will be my Wolf Lord, Abaddon will be played as a Lone Wolf in those lists.
I also recently received a fairly sizeable order that will be coming up in the painting rotations once my troops are squared away. Including a Spartan assault tank, Stormeagle, and Warhound Titan, along with the 5 actual Justaerin models as well as Loken and Abby. Ontop of all that I also have the 3 skyhunters, and 10 Catulan Reavers, which I used a Command Squad head on and will be modelling Kalus Ekkadon.
Sadly I tried a lot of different ways to replicate the color using GW paint and just couldn't find one that looked the same, I wanted as close to the Index Astartes color as I could get, and this seems to be it for me. Sorry!

Another update, this time a Drop Pod and a Spartan Assault Tank!
First up is the Drop Pod, the logos are placed on all the doors just like this one.
I wanted to do a fun interior, and this is what I came up with.
Next up is the Spartan Assault Tank, this kit, while a complete PITA, is such a fun build and so very cool to see done in the end. I believe I did the paintwork justice.
The Aquila was left on, it was only "Taboo" for troops to display it on their armor, otherwise it was a symbol of the alliance between the Emperor and the Mechanicum, so it can be rightfully left on vehicles.
62374
Post by: The Dark Apostle
Brilliant, the drop pod paint job and interior is amazing!
64336
Post by: Brokksamson
Thanks again Apostle, I didn't take a picture of it but I did some drybrushing on the bottom of the pod with boltgun so it looks like it has been through a few entries. It was a lot of fun to paint, but not so much fun to assemble!

That is a great looking army I saw your spartan on the FW fb page the other day
Have you considered some weathering powders or some chipping etc. ?? Would look great
64336
Post by: Brokksamson
I have been debating on a lighter grey weathering powder around the bottoms of their legs to mimic walking through crushed concrete, most of their basing is done with the idea that they are walking through a city they destroyed
36691
Post by: OldSchoolTermie
I like the greens and the blacks are rich, which looks great. I think the plasma glow is really good too. The only thing that is a little off to me is the basework, which seems a little drab. I think if you hit the bases with a very dry drybrush of bone, it would really bring them to life and round out the models as a whole.
64336
Post by: Brokksamson
Thanks Oldschool, I am definitely looking into something that will make the bases stand out and help the models overall, I just haven't figured out quite what to do yet, I will definitely look at brushing them with some bleached bone or something of the sort.

Thanks again for the compliments YL, I have a Warhound Titan of the Legio Mortis, and a Storm Eagle coming down the pipeline once my compressor shows up for the airbrush!
The Spartan is a great model no doubt, kind of a PITA if you are not used to dealing with Resin on that scale (which I was not), it requires a lot of filing and fitting before assembly which can get daunting, but the finished product is most certainly worth it. It is just a bit bigger than a Landraider (not overly, but it's pretty noticeable side by side). So if you dislike painting Landraiders, I would avoid it!

I finally found a Horus model, thanks to fellow Dakkanaut WingWong.
I am eagerly awaiting the Forgeworld Horus model, but I wanted a fill in until that actually happens and could not find one anywhere! until I was saved! From what I understand this is a very rare sculpt of Horus and I have only found 1 or 2 others on the google machine.
I do have to state a preference for Horus' "Pre Heresy" White armor, but this model was definitely a joy to paint, Apologies ahead of time for his face, the casting left a little to be desired but none the less so does my skill at painting faces!
Without further build up.

His head is much too small, his arms look kinda out of place and the wrong size for the body, those two things are the first i see and kinda kills the rest of the model for me, i am just trying to give my honest opinion as that model does not do your army justice.

Your awesome army is awesome! Definitely all that work paid off, and superbly well. Horus seems slightly lack luster.. it is the head.

yeah I agree on the Horus bit, I am waiting patiently for Forgeworld to release Horus. According to the Weekender he will be after Ferrus.
Thanks a lot for the comments, always nice to see!

Maybe you can use an abbadon base for horus?

it crossed my mind Panda, however I am not what you would call "Great at conversions" right now, not much of a sculptor etc. I am also a bigger fan of Horus in the white armor and Abby's stuff is just way too chaosy for that. So, I will wait for Forgeworld and use this guy in the mean time.

Dang! nice warhound. I also noticed some Necrons up there.. and the tesseract.. cool.

Gits -- Haha, it took me about 20-22 hours from basecoat to finished product, so I kinda considered that "Cranking it out", Thanks for the compliment! Definitely means a lot having seen your stuff! We're gonna have to get together sometime soon, I am building a Badab War army, so I will have to get them next to some Mantis warriors so your paint can make it look like I hit mine with a roller and called it good
Panda -- Thanks a lot, and yea Crons are one of my in process armies, Vault looked insanely fun so I had to buy one, I almost regret it just because of how much of a pain it's going to be, the entire inside of the thing is crawling with scarabs etc. I tend to have more in process than I think I can handle but I have Army ADD

That sounds fantastic Brokk! (great avatar BTW) Based on your Warhound I'm sure your painting will look just fine next to mine!

I am surprised you went with those colors next to your Sons of Horus

Fluff-Wise it was the only thing that made sense, The Legio Mortis Titan Legion was dedicated to Horus by the Fabricator General of the Mechanicum after Horus was named Warmaster, it was a way for the Mechanicum to win the favor of Horus, so they carried several titans from Legio Mortis aboard The Vengeful Spirit, including the Dies Irae. This is the Pre Heresy scheme for Legio Mortis.

Hahaha, Indeed you have, My upcoming additions for the Sons include the following:
Sons Of Horus Contemptor
Sons Of Horus Reavers x10
MKIV Recon x10
Sons of Horus Command Squad
Legion Praetor in Terminator (Rassek "Proxy")
10x Cataphractii (Non Justaerin)
MKIV Apothecary
Conversion for Torgaddon and Little Horus
Legion Glaive
Obviously a few of these are waiting on release but once they do I will definitely own them, I have decided to make my Sons one gigantic legion rather than building another Legion.

New stuff is on order, but it will be a while before I get to it, I just finished 1850 on my Crons and I have a "commission" to paint my brother's Pre Heresy Death Guard for his birthday present. So you will be seeing them soon, unfortunately no Sons being built or painted in the near future.

I do love me some Death Guard, make sure Garro is in there

Straight Arrow will be in there, this is the 7th Battle Company

Are you going to be doing a full company?

Post by: Brokksamson
As of right now, my brother has a full Contemptor Talon, 30-40 troops, Power Armor Praetor (Going to be doing a slight custom to make Garro), and a few other Misc units, I'm sure he will be expanding at some point.

I do have to state a preference for Horus' "Pre Heresy" White armor, but this model was definitely a joy to paint, Apologies ahead of time for his face, the casting left a little to be desired but none the less so does my skill at painting faces!
The Warmaster Horus Lupercal.
Faces are tough, I cant do anything nearly as good as your attempt so dont be so down. Interesting sculpt. His arms look thin and the talon of horrus is supposed to have a built in storm bolter right? Wonder how old it is.

Post by: Brokksamson
It's rather old, but Forgeworld has announced that Horus is being sculpted now (and in Crusade Armor! Huzzah!!!!), so it won't be long before I have the proper Warmaster marching amongst his Sons.

Well... I gotta say. i checked out your whole blog. Aweseome. I love the attention to detail. All the high lining on the black armor must have driven you crazy sometimes. A Beautiful army. You must be pretty proud.

Thanks Senna, the line highlighting was kind of a pain, nothing as bad as my Necrons. but they are supposed to be extreme. I recently acquired an unhelmeted Calas Typhon head from a gamer in the UK who had no use for it on his model. So I used it to make myself a unique Sons of Horus Praetor in TDA.

Horus looks great, but...I gotta agree with you. His face looks like he just gambled and lost and he's contemplating how much time it would take to teleport back to the ship to change his armor.

It's been a while, and this model has been done but I have slacked on posting it.
I waited around the Forgeworld booth for the entire first day of Adepticon, with many trials and tribulations associated to when the book was opening etc. Needless to say I am glad that I stuck it out for the long haul as this model is amazing.
I followed closely to the colors displayed on the cover of Primarchs, I am still attempting to understand why Forgeworld chose to paint him in the black armor when this was quite clearly a sculpt of the white. I know Eagan had said he intended it to be able to be painted either way. I guess I am just kinda crazy when it comes to things with Sons being correct.
I also recently purchased another massive chunk of Sons models to finish out the army at my current painting level. I will be building a lot more models that will be specifically built to match the best of my painting ability which was used on Horus.
Included in the next wave of updates to come.
30x Reavers with Jump Packs
10x MKIV Recons
3x SoH Contemptor Dreads
Fell Blade
10x Justaerin
Sicaran

I have a ton of models (literally another 2500pts) sitting on the shelf, as of right now they are on hold. I was working on an Eldar army for a local Escalation league, and now going to be working on some Space Wolves for a Campaign that my brother is creating.
In short... Yes I do plan on continuing to update, I just don't know how long it will be until there is an update! I might get a wild hair and work on some here and there.
