After having seen Neil101's brilliant Inq28 gamingtable of the Arkke http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/1410/318718.page I decided to do something similar (although probably not as brilliant as his ).
It will be a modular board kinda like the zone mortalis tiles. The tiles will measure 30cm x 30cm and 30cm x 60cm. As they will all be different, the board can be different every time you play on it. When all the tiles are put together the board/table will measure 120cm x180 cm.
The setting of the board will be the inside of a penal mining building called "The Sisyphus Complex". http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sisyphus A place where the scum/criminals of the yet unnamed planet will be send to to mine the precious minerals for the duration of their sentence...only something went horrible wrong inthere...fluff and story will be posted in a later stage, but that's the overall concept we are running with. Also we are still debating if it will be for Inq28 or Imunda.
Here are some pictures from the first test tile i did, it's still in pip atm.
and a topdown shot of the tile.
Grime, dirt and other "effects" still need to be added...hope you like it sofar

Excellent work so far. The amount of detail is gorgeous. I'd love to see a whole table to that standard.

Looking cool. Very nice textures you have got going there.
What's the difference between INQ28 and Imunda? I thought they were the same?

Post by: Bruticus
Lovely stuff. Do you have any WIP pictures? I would like to see how you did the detailing on the walls. I've looked into making something like this and the main problem is getting enough detail on the wall and floor I'd say. I think you are pulling it off so far, some of the wall detail is fantastic and the floor - though quite simple - looks great.. Maybe a few posters or warning signs around the place would work well? Oh and hazard stripes?

Post by: Chelnov
@ Zwan1One - http://inq28.blogspot.nl/p/what-is-inq28.html and http://empireofghosts.blogspot.nl/p/inquisimunda-resources.html Hope this helps
@ Bruticus - Posters, hazard stripes, warning signs, discarded items, etc, will all be added, i am kinda making the before situation first, then i will add all the clutter you get when everything goes wrong and people run amok
Some wip pics.
The green things are plastic clothes pins (idea looted from ironhands http://ironhands.com/necro.htm).
The "inside" wall detail, i just cut out square and placed sprue cuttings and any cool shapes i could find on the back side. The next wall section i make, i shall take some more detailed wip pics.

definatly subbed... you had me when i discovered the plastic cloth pegs... then i saw the sprue cuttings for plumbings...
awesome and yet simple... and still not my ideas... i need to follow this as i think i can learn quite a lot here...
and painting is top notch too!
cheers, vik

Oh man, I'm with Vik - wonderful use of 'stuff' all over the place... This is gonna be a great ride, I'm subbed...
Would be wonderful for a Space Hulk, Judge Dredd, etc campaign - in fact the uses are infinite...

Post by: Viktor von Domm
my thoughts exactly...
i started with brick walls for such a count as space hulk game idea... but going down this road will be quicker and... better looking... darn

Post by: Malika2
Oooh, how about multiply levels?
24297
Post by: Viktor von Domm
will be quite hard to be still playable, non?
9394
Post by: Malika2
Doesn't have to be, look at this for example. Or you could have removable components.
Or have different levels placed elsewhere, so it looks as if you're playing on two different tables/battlefields, but each one is a separate level, units can only access the different levels through specific access points (e.g. staircase, elevator, etc.)
24297
Post by: Viktor von Domm
second idea is always doable... but of course the first idea is way more cooler^^
62369
Post by: Chelnov
Thanks to all for the vote of convidence
@ Malika2 - At the moment it will all be one level, no height differences. But maybe if all works out well, i might add some tiles with height.
Another reason why i am making a board like this instead of the "standard" necromunda terrain is, the terrain i am making now can be all put on top of eachother for easy storage

It's looking really good, very impressed.

Nice work. Great use of pins. They are one of my favorites for adding sci-fi detail. The ones you used have much more detail than the dollar store cheapies I've been using.

good looking addition... by the way... your emossed rivets... very good looking! convincing!

Very nice. I might be tempted to add in some paint chips and maybe a few stripes/numbers or something on some of the panels in a different colour just to break things up a bit.

Some ideas for rooms:
Medical bay:
Name says it all I guess. Include some beds for the patients to be placed in, something like this but then with all sorts of crude operating devices coming out of it. Kinda makes you wonder if it's used for treatment or torture... You can also add cabinets filled with medical equipment. Oh and some sort of screen/x-ray device to check inside the miners' bodies. Screen generally would look cool.
Mess hall / cafeteria:
Miners need to eat as well. Could be a big room filled with tables where they sit. Food could be taken from a counter (like in a normal cafeteria), but it would be cooler to have some crude conveyorbelt like constructs at the walls from where the miners get their daily meals.
Vehicle repair bay:
I assume the miners might use breaching drills and powerlifters. These things however do need to be maintained/repaired. You could build a large hall with some of these vehicles standing in it, being repairer by servitors or something.
Showers:
Name says it all...
Shuttlebay
I guess this would be outside then (another challenge!), basically a large platform where shuttles can land. Maybe include an Arvus model on it.

Although the Drill and the Powerlifter are great models and a good idea to put in a mining facility. The idea of giving tools like that to inmates...hmm
The shower i like alot, would be nice to do something with tiled walls instead of the slabs of metal the hallways consist of (and ofcourse the oppertunity to make a bar of on the floor ) The medical bay is a must have, not only for the injuries...but maybe for some medical experiments...ahem.
Thanks for the input Malika2
9394
Post by: Malika2
Well, the miners would need some sort of equipment to drill through the rock. I would imagine these vehicles might be controlled by servitors of a sort?
Another idea for rooms would be a dormitory or something along those lines for the guards. Other ideas for guards' facilities would be some sort of office or...an armory! (you know you want to make one)
Cellblocks are of course another must! Perhaps try to look at Half Life 2's Nova Prospekt.

Post by: Young_Logan
Looking great you could try some sort of equipment storage room for tools/weapons etc, like a police locker room etc. ANother thing you could put in would be a disued comunications array/holo deckcommand centre style thing for the middle of the board
Young Logan
9394
Post by: Malika2
Oh a communications room would be very fitting!
And what about an elevator? One of those giant ones that can carry a large group of men and their equipment.
17349
Post by: SilverMK2
A few rooms I might think of doing that have not already been mentioned: + Secure airlock/bulkhead for moving between the inmate area and the rest of the ship. + Security room +/- armoury +/- guard bunks + Store room - lots of shelving and crates, perhaps an overhead crane rail +/- repair benches etc + Security checkpoint + Emergency decompression chamber/survival shelter + Escape pod launch rail (either empty or occupied with escape pod ) Things I back from other people: + Mess hall (including autochef or a kitchen?) + Medical bay + Cells (especially if you make it double height vis the HL2 cells above) + Showers Things I would suggest in general for the board: + More colours! The board does look good but it is really starting to blur into itself now you have more sections. Add a few more colours - some hazard striping on the odd pipe or hatch, some hall markings on the wall or floor. The floor at the moment is really suffering from this. Perhaps add in a few bits of less rusty floor where things have recently been dragged, maybe some oily tyre marks where a tracked servitor has leaked slightly. You could also try adding some mould to the walls, especially near anything that might leak water or wastes. + Hollow column sections - you have a couple of large square blocks making up the walls on some sections - make a couple hollow with machinery inside like pipes, conduits and lift shafts for some variation + The tops of the walls are a bit bland, perhaps try something like the above for them with bits of pipe coming out (even if you leave them level with the top of the wall for ease of storage it will help break up the flat green-ness).

Post by: Malika2
Since we don't know how high the ceiling in some of the rooms might be, what about adding a staircase here and there?
When stuff starts to get weird (in the story it is), it might also be a nice touch to have corpses on the floors. What you could perhaps do is to have some of the tiles on those different boards be removable. You could then have your standard tile which has nothing on it, but also tiles covered in blood and bodies. That way you won't have to make different version of the same terrain piece, or have it covered in corpses whilst it's still in the peaceful phase of the story.
By the way, have you checked Philip Sibbering's Ecopolis? It might give you a few more ideas.

Post by: Chelnov
@ SilverMK2 - As for adding more colors. as soon as i have a new pot of white paint, i will be adding wall numbers/markings (not sure if i will do it on the floor). Hazard stripes will be added to the upcomming blastdoors and some propaganda poster will be added on some walls. Also we had an idea last night of maybe putting cctv cameras on some walls in a different color to break up the 'green blur'. Thanks for you input btw
@ Malika2 - The height of the walls is 3 inch (7,5 cm). Corpses you say...wait for the chapelroom i say And thanks for the link.
@ Viktor von Domm - I know i should post more wip pictures, i tend to forget taking them But here are some of the main entrance part, and i'll promise you, i'll post more of the progress.
A word of warning to all Lego lovers out there. The following images might be shocking.
Outerwall, this wall is slightly wider than the hallway walls.
Wall section.
And this one is for Viktor. Those thingies i used are buttons from a old faxmachine, like the buttons on a old phone.
And the othe part of the main entrance.
Take care.

Hmm, what if the CCTV system is made from Servo Skulls?
Since we are dealing with the Imperium, you might want to add some more religious stuff to it. How about a small chapel where prisoners can prey to the Emperor?
Or perhaps a shrine for the Adeptus Mechanicus?
Besides that, I'd also love to see more of the outside area!

If you're still taking suggestions what about the Governor/Overseer's office and quarters. Might make for an interesting juxtaposition against the miner's quarters. Maybe even have a small hydroponic garden area
9394
Post by: Malika2
Hydroponic gardens would be really cool! Do read the stuff on the link I posted on Philip Sibbering's Ecopolis.
I also made some layouts on Sketchup for an Ecorium, check them here, it might give you some more ideas as well.

Aeroponic gardens would probably be more likely though, as they use far less water and nutrients and give a much higher volume yield than hydroponics.

After contact was lost with the Sisyphus Complex, A enforcer squad was dispatced from hive Sephora to investigate the complex...they never returned. A second squad was sent, of which only 3 returned. They didn't find any of the members of the first squad, nor did they find any of the inmates or security guards bodies. The only thing they did find was a single voice-data recorder. The last message on the recorder describes what sounds like a last stand of one of the security guards.

Thanks for the replies and comments. Glad to see people enjoy this, getting inspiration and giving some back is the beauty of excellent forums like this on the internet.
@ Neil101 - i am in a bit of a (happy) shock to read that you find the board inspiring, since it was your work on the Arkke that inspired me to start this project.
@ PDH - Thanks for the PM, the info was just what we needed to start putting together our warbands, i'll post some PIP pictures soon. I can however tell you that 4 warbands are confirmed which are, a inquisitor retinue, a roguetrader retinue, a adeptus mechanicus retinue and a all female warband, not sure of the characters is will consist of (he was kinda vague about that). The other 2 are not confirmed yet.
@ Malika2 - A processing room will be inthere.
And i will try out the Tamiya Clear Red. thx.

The chapel is really cool and gory. It's look a little bit like "Silent Hill" or "The Thing". I imagine how a red pyramid is comming out of the doors.
62369
Post by: Chelnov
@ Viktor von Domm - the signs can indeed use a wash
@ Logan - There will be something much worse than pyramid head comming through those doors...trust me
@ PDH - I know you want to see some models, so here you go.
My warband sofar.
- Inquisitor Atticus Stanz of the Ordo Hereticus.
His laspistol will be changed and i need to change the look of his legs, to make it look like he isn't wearing power armor.
- Preacher Jakob Veatch.
Weapon needs to be modified and a cc weapon needs to be added.
- Clovis.
They are all still very wip, mouldlines need to be removed, details refined etc. and ofcourse a backstory (which exists in my head only atm).
Also i need to add a 4th character, but for now i have no idea what to add.
The other warbands i'll posts when i have the oppertunity to take some pictures of them.
Take care.
9394
Post by: Malika2
Hmm, perhaps it could be human sized power armour (does give you a reason to make true scale Astartes). Also, you might want to convert those legs a bit, make the armour look more ornate.

Drazuul wrote:This looks wonderful! Just curious, have you listened to the Ciaphas Cane audio drama "Dead in the Water"? This chapel looks exactly like the description of one within the audio drama.
I never listened to it, but it sounds intresting. I may have to ask my friend if he listened to it, since he came up with the idea of the Chapel.
@ Malika2 - Make it more ornate, that's what i had in mind, since the models can't wear power armor or use powerfists.
I made some removable vending machines for decoration or to be used as barricades/ los blockers.
Take care.

What about adding an Astropathic Choir chamber in there? Have some dead astropaths laying around...
8745
Post by: Llamahead
Nifty impressive use of the grave cart bodies. The chapel definitely looks like something nastys happened probably involving those chaos scamps
62369
Post by: Chelnov
@ Malika2 - No more rooms with dead people are planned for now The entrance/courtyard is almost finished, after that i'll probably start on either the processing chamber or on a landing platform just outside the complex, carved into the the side of the mountain. (since the complex is based at the base of the largest mountain on the planet we are playing on).
@ Llamahead - Thanks ...when a scene like that happens, people usually asume chaos is involved...but if that's true in this case...hmmm. The truth will reveal itself one of these days
Updates have been a bit slow as RL has been interfering...in a good way for a change. I'll post an update soon.
Take care.
32193
Post by: PDH
Great finally get to see the models.
Inquisitor Atticus Stanz of the Ordo Hereticus. Do you know what philosophy he is going to be following? Nice model for a wizened old Inquisitor. I think he should keep his laspistol. I agree that the legs need to be de-power armoured. High elf legs or chaos cultist legs would probably work.
Preacher Jakob Veatch. He is great. I so like the pose and the change you have made to the bolt pistol.
Clovis. Cool, it all looks good but I think perhaps his head needs a bit more integration.
The rest of the base sounds good. It shows your depth of detail for the building - the landing pad as well as the entrance.
9394
Post by: Malika2
Fair enough about the corpses, but you'd still need an astropathic choir!
32193

I wholeheartedly agree with Malika.

Post by: Chelnov
@ PDH - Sofar i know the Inquisitor will be a bitter, grumpy old bastard. Still need to work out all the character backgrounds. Since i will be the GM on this story. Atticus Stanz and his retinue will be npc characters. Might be a bit of a shame, but someone has to do the dirty job of GM- ing , and if that means my retinue will be played with or against sparcely...so be it, aslong as the others have a good time, i'll be satisfied aswell
@ Malika2 - Argh...i'll look into it, maybe for a future room.
Here is a picture of the first door i have made for closing the entrance/courtyard. 5 intact doors will be made and 2 "blasted/welded/ripped" open doors.
Front and back.
The entrance/courtyard is in PIP, and will be posted soon.
Take care.

That is one seriously good looking board you are making there Chelnov. I tried to make some Necromunda terrain a while back for my little gaming group using packaging materials. We played some games on it but it was not what we were looking for.

@ MauS and A Cookbook - I live in Veendam. Our small gaming group constist of 6 people. We used to play 40k but after all the changes in rules, codexes and playingroom space, we decided to do something smaller and more personal. We've played Mordheim for a while, but the 40k environment is more to our liking and after discovering Molotov's http://inq28.blogspot.nl/ and http://s3.zetaboards.com/The_Ammobunker/forum/3012277/ we decided to give it a go.

So i finally settled into my new home and FINALLY got the almighty internet connection, yay
Work of the rest of the complex has been slow but steady, with the main board's last piece almost finished (i'll post some pics asap).
Meanwhile i took pictures of 2 of my friends initial warbands, which they will be using for the campaign.
First up a squat warband, not named at the moment.
Second, a adeptus mechanicus warband...still pip.
And i have been working on a shuttle, in which the "lucky ones" who will survive will try to escape.

@ Ruglud - The intakes are caps from a product called "Danish Chef", it's a cheese cream some people use to fill dorito's with.

Well i started work on the landing area for the shuttle. Currently i am trying to decide the height of the landing platform.
Option 1 - slightly under 2 inch (leaves no room for models to go under it).
Option 2 - 5 inch in height, a lot of room for models to move under it, gives the oppertunity to make a walkway/stair construction to get up and down the platform.
Any thoughts on this one?
Take care.

My vote would be for the taller configuration. It has more utility for gaming (sneaky mutants and such)

Finished the last part of the initial layout of the complex. The second part of the entrance/courtyard.
This is the courtyard setup.
This is the entrance setup.
With one lucky survivor making it out alive
Finishing the warbands/gangs/retinue's is the next priority so we can get some gaming done.
Take care.

Looking good Chelnov. Can we get a shot of all the parts toghether?
For the landingplatform i would choose the taller option aswell.

Great stuff chelnov :-) the lighter is cool . I second the desire to see all together so far. That lucky stuntie is most excellent as well.

I'd go with the high platform too, it'd give a good oportunity for ladders and railings.
What are you using for the pad legs/risers?

Chelnov, I'd vote for the taller platform mate, just seems to fit better and like others said gives you more scope for brilliant modeling work :-)

As much as I'm sick with envy and a part of me just wants to leave this thread and never come back, I'd love to see this as well. I can't take my eyes of this stuff. Truly great inspiring work, sir.

Thanks for the comments.
I will take some pictures of all the tiles together soon.
@Littletower - The risers i will use are the leftover legs from a kitchenblock that i installed a few years back.
Looking at the comments, i take it the high platform i the more favorite option
Take care.

Taller legs all the way I am a leg man after all , that way there's also line of sight for the unlucky ones to try and get a shot off at the departing shuttle.

That is a superb modular layout you've got Chelnov. I'm currently green with envy

Dude that looks amazing together. I cant wait to see what a full 6ft table would look like. as it is its perfect for Zone mortalis, Necromunda, or probably infinity.

Niiice... I'd love to play a game of INQ28 on that board!
Also, +1 vote for the higher legs, if you're still taking opinions!

Looking absolutely brilliant!
Do you plan on doing something about this?
Maybe have a loose bit of wall that you can just stick in there when you're using that setup? Not that it's necessary at all, it was just something I noticed.

Yes, turn the tile around. The pictures i took were just for the sake of showing off the options we would have of placing the tiles...in a gaming situation we would probably never place the tiles like that
Take care.

Thanks (though late!) for the input on those legs. As good as the may look, I don't think I'd get by if I tear the kitchen cabinets down for parts!
Great board, by the way.

In the need to make some barricades for the board, the perfect opportunity came along in the shape of Skalk's Junk Pile Challenge.
http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/563097.page
So let the clean up of the bitbox begin.
First of i rummaged through my bitbox to find some bits that where small enough to be put on the basesize restrictions...and found this.
From left to right. _ Cables from a old pc, 2 cardboard rolls, the inside of a paintroller, the inside of a haircurler thingie, wiremesh, a dentalfloss container, various bottlecaps, various pen/marker caps, an orange thing, some gears, black tubethingies, a plug from a cable, clothespins, springs, a black stickshaped thingie, a white thingie, paperclips, a lego part thingie, a piece from iirc a spawn toy, parts from a headset, a wooden thing, a brown thing (no idea what it is) and some ribbed card.
And we still have some straws, some wooden popsicle sticks, toothpicks and other random junk i hope to find during the next month.
Goodluck to everyone taking part in this challenge, take care and have fun

Interesting possibilities you show here...
Good luck junk king...your board is stunning...I have but one question...the green tops of the walls look a bit bland compared to all the awesome details you came up with. A little bit of rust on the tops would be all that is needed to break up the currently flat surfaces there...

Post by: Chelnov
Vik, i know the tops are a bit bland. But it does help defining the layout. I am afraid that when i put rust patches on them, the whole thing will become a blur...we did talk about painting the tops in hazardstripes, but that might make it to busy.
Maybe a good idea will arise in the future

I see your point here mate..
Hazard stripes definitely would be too much screaming attention... What I would do is find small an multiple items to add to the tops..something that looks meaningful without actually meaning anything...I would suggest using the small wheels you find in curtain hangers hooks...you could even declare these structures as a means to get footage of the surviving game for broadcasting...

You mean like a Running man sort of show? (or Battle royal or Deathrace).
They drop people inthere and see who survives the longest, while they broadcast it?

As I understood your theme of this board it was heading in that direction anyways?...

That is a decent pile of junk you have there. There are a few pieces in there I wish I had in my own bitz box.

@ Vik _ The groups that are supposed to go into the complex all do it for their own reasons, but as they are to discover what has happened inside, some of them decide to contact the "proper" authorities about their discoveries...hence the broadcasting beacon. Ofcourse we can always use the board afterwards to "host" running man games on
@ Skalk _ Send me a PM with your adress and i could mail you a box of junk...or is that considered bribing?

Brilliant!
Honestly I'd say leave em blank. (the tops of the walls) or blacking them if they "continue" to higher levels.

sub'd, base on pure awesomeness.
a suggestion (don't know if you are still taking them)--any facility probably has an office. most facilities have a break room, dining room or cafeteria. i think a tile that combined a dining room and office (somehow) would be pretty slick, and add another of those realistic retails that really make a project pop (not that your project needs help in that department.
started looking at this because i am in the process of trying to build a modular table top myself...
question: why use plastic card for the walls? wouldn't foamboard be easier (and cheaper)?
62369
Post by: Chelnov
@ Gawdam Sumbish - I use Polystyrol plasticcard sheets, they are much larger and cheaper than those evergreen packs. Foamboard would indeed be faster and cheaper but the town i live in, is complete devoid of foamboard and taking a trip to the city every time to get foamboard isn't really a favorite thing to do for me. Plus i kinda like working with plastic.
As for adding more rooms to the complex...maybe in the future, the whole project is on a standstill at the moment, as those with whom i intend to play on the board do not have their warbands ready yet.
I am however working on a other table...pictures of that will be posted in the near future.
Take care.

Post by: GawdamSumbish
where do you get polystyrol sheets? is that a european thing? i hate having to buy evergreen from ebay, but no stores near me carry anything like sheet styrene, let alone textured sheets, angles, etc.
it is strange to think that foamboard would be hard to find anywhere, as you can get it at dollar stores and drug stores here...

What other table are you planning on building?
I've started my own terrain project (scroll down the first page, and then onwards), inspired by some of the amazing stuff I've seen on this forum, including your table. I'm curious if you'd have any feedback.
As for the warbands, what kinda stuff can we expect?
