Not gonna lie, I might steal that falcon over the Carnosaur idea. I've lost the turret for mine and want to make something out of the one I'll get in the Lizardmen start collecting box I'm going to buy for the heads and "jetbikes" and that just looks fantastic.

Mario: I've somehow never seen that WHFB empire model before... there are some awesome bits in that thing!

Craggy: go for it! Just make sure to post some photos so everyone can see how it turns out. We all get better at converting when we borrow ideas from others.

Speaking of, got some more work done on the Wave Serpents. The rider is mounted up top and is extended out over the dino. It's a standard eldar jetbike chasis cut down to fit with a Shuriken cannon (which I will always use over the catapult). Lots of green stuff will smooth out and connect the rider's mounted seat to the carapace armor.

That jetbike is anything but standard now. I like how they look tough, but still fast and maneuverable.

Thanks, Youwashock. They're slowly getting there!

Some more progress. Got the top of the carapace figured out. Took me a long time but eventually just pulled the trigger on it. Decided to use one of the heavy weapons and cut it up to fit the top. The front was a sliced-down warwalker leg (the calf/ankle area on the leg where it kind of bell-bottoms out). Then hit the whole thing with green stuff. Here are a few before and afters.

Ready for the side gunners!

JeffyP- that Carnosaur Wave Serpent is the bomb- I really like how this build is coming along! Anxiously awaiting updates.

Thanks, Meercat. It's a little unnerving each time I add something. But eventually you just have to go for it and glue!

Got the side gunners outfitted. The bright lances are magnetized to swap out with other loadouts as needed. Probably be sticking between them or shuriken cannons this edition.

Sweet jesus that just got awesome. The turrets on the side just really bulk it out and it really looks immense and intimidating now. Did you happen to pick up the new Craftworlds Codex yet?

Post by: craggy

Wow! Wasn't sure on the idea of the side gunners when you first showed them off but seeing them on the model has turned me around completely, they look awesome! Very Dino Riders!

One thing, and I can't believe I'm asking this given the size of some official transport vehicles but where do the dudes go? If I make one I was considering having troops disembark from a webway portal rather than being within the model itself. Did you have a similar thought or just going with rule of cool?

boundless08 wrote:Did you happen to pick up the new Craftworlds Codex yet?
No, I haven't picked it up. Haven't even read reviews yet. Did they nerf Wave Serpents into oblivion?!? Regardless, I'm planning to use this Exodite force as Ynarri so I'm safe for a bit.

No worries. It's a good question. The original plan called for troops hanging off the sides of the carapace section behind the gunner mounts. It was really important to show that these WERE transports. As time went on, I gave up on that idea. Rule of cool I guess. BUT NOW I HAVE A SWEET, FLUFFY EXPLANATION! Thank you very much. I will definitely be using that webway portal beacon idea. Thanks man!

Really awesome stuff!
Read the whole blog almost in a one go.

I just love that medieval theme you have going on for the Nurgle army! And man that cabinet you made for them
As a returning hobbyist, your models give me a lot of inspiration, especially the orky ones

Excited to see how the Eldar army proceeds. Subscribed!

Sounds familiar.
I have 4 armies and for the last 1.5 years I've played like 2 games. I used to play quite a lot, but as you get older and have more responsibilities and all that boring stuff, organizing games tend to get harder.
Trying to sort of "restart" the hobby and play and paint more often from now on. Even restarted my blog to keep up the motivation

I own 3+ armies (depending on whether I count the Imperial Guard as one very large army or several sizeable ones) and play pretty much exactly once every three years. Last three times I played Orks, the most recent time didn't even feature my own figures.

Anyway, this Exodites project keeps on boggling the mind. It's seriously cool stuff that's happening in this thread. Keep it coming!

Hah, I own 9 armies for 4 game systems and play once every few months... with one of them.

Post by: JeffyP

Sounds like we all need to get playing! In all reality though, the game aspect long took a backseat to the hobby itself. I get so much enjoyment out of daydreaming, planning, buying, assembling, creating (scratchbuilds and conversions) models than I do moving them around the table. Don't get me wrong: I love a good game (and there are a lot of great folks to play here in Akron Ohio). But it's just a really nice relaxing hobby to do at home.

Anyways, onto some hobby stuff. The Wave Serpents. They're done. I have proof.

Added a few bits here and there. The big update are the rear fins (from the Wraithknight kit). I'm really happy with how this build turned out.

Besides, transports in 40k are weird. 10 marines cannot fit inside a Rhino. Same goes for the back of Wave Serpent. Or a Trukk. Or a Chimera. So I guess what I'm trying to say is: I can't really justify them not being transports but don't think it matters too much. The webway portal beacon idea fits nicely and, if not, then the rule of cool will suffice. If neither of those work for my opponents, then... well... I'll find other people to play with.

These are looking mighty impressive dude I wouldn't worry so much about whether they can transport stuff or not. To be honest, you could probably fit 10 exodites clinging onto the sides of them easier than you could fit 10 Marines in a Rhino

This is a very nice army to watch come together. Now that vehicles have a toughness value it really opens up the ability to model them as beasts. As for transport capability, I'll imagine it just swallowed the unit about 8-12 hours before the battle

Post by: JeffyP

Thanks a lot, guys! Yeah, I was really pumped for the switch to straight wounds instead of armor values and vehicle facings.

I got distracted away from the exodite project last week in favor of some D&D minis. My buddies and I have had a loose group going on 3 or 4 years, starting in 4th edition. We only play a couple times a year (as they all live about 3 hours away). This time, we started a new campaign where my buddy was the Dungeon Master. This gave me a lot more time to make some minis rather than having to plan for the campaign itself. I had 5 days to build and paint these guys. Overall I'm very happy with the results.

My character was a gnome tinkerer ranger named Professor Rupert Cogglesbottom. He had some spells that were all represented by various wonky gnome gadgets and gizmos, including a "familiar" mechanical bird named Archibald. He also had an animal companion (from the ranger beastmaster class) which was an Ape named Reginald. Sometimes the Professor rode the Reginald as a mount. So of course I had to make separate minis for each situation! 4 minis for one character! I'm a nerd. There were also 3 other PCs. My wife was Rumpelstilskin, a halfling rogue who is just about the most deplorable creature you can imagine. (So I modeled him covered in blood). Two other friends were a fairly standard Paladin and a Lizardman Druid, complete with a magic wooden arm.

Anyway, it was a TON of fun building and painting several unique minis. A great break from working on an army project.

Yeah, it was a lot of fun. Everyone had a great time and, as always, my wife's Rumpelstilkin was the MVP. She gets so into the role and is a total creep.

ANYWAYS, HERE WE GO! YOU WANT UPDATES?!? EH? I GOT UPDATES!

Feels like a long time since I worked on the Exodites but we're back with a vengeance. Got some paint slapped on these guys and finished the basing. It feels great having completed one of the Shining Spears carnosaur riders. I am SO HAPPY with how the bases turned out. These were the most complex bases I've done yet. Cork, drywall putty, sand, rocks, paint, grass flock, 3 different types of grass tufts, and many colors of flower tufts.

The models, colors, and flowers work together (at least for me). Hopefully you all like them too!

Thanks, Cam. Always appreciate the support.

The shining spears are just about done but I forgot to show off something I build a while back. This time it's on the Dark Eldar side of the ynnari army. I want to have a lot of small dinorsaurs running around the board (represented by the various beasts DE have at their disposal) so I need a Beastmaster to go along! They normally ride around on a DE hellion glider. Mine will be riding a dinosaur instead. Using the lizardmen terradon kit plus a few other bits.

Started work on the next large dino. Well, erm... dragon. The new project is a Hemlock Wraithfighter, a large Eldar flyer. Of course for the Exodite force, the jet flying vehicle would not do. It has to be a dragon! I fiddled with the idea of using a WHFB High Elf or Dark Elf dragon kit for this but it just never felt right. The flyer needs be to very large and very intimidating. After all, the model in-game makes nearby units suffer -1 leadership.

After weeks of stewing and brainstorming I finally came up with the idea to combine some kits, all from WHFB. Major pieces include the body of the Magmadroth (Dwarves), the head of the High Elf Dragon, and the wings from the Stormcast Stardrake. Wish me luck!

Thanks everybody! Overjoyed to see others as pumped about this dragon as I am. The original centerpiece models for the army were going to be the shining spears... but now there's the war walkers, the wave serpents, and now this dragon.... I'm overloaded!

Anyway, started on some green stuff work. I also used some left over fin bits from the magmadroth to put right under the dragon's chin. This way there's more of a solid transition from neck to head. Connected it all with some green stuff.

Got the wings on. So nerve-wracking! Oh, yeah, the legs went on too. Forgot to update that one.

Also put the first piece of armor on him. They are some kind of bits from the wraithknight kit. The plan is to build out a armored back piece that will also support the rider in a saddle. As this is a Hemlock (and Hemlock's are psykers), the rider should be a pretty large presence on the model. I think I will make him the king of the exodites in the fluff. After all, he's the guy chosen to ride the biggest, meanest, flying dragon. That, and in-game he will be casting powers and lowering the enemy leadership. Fits well I think.

Thanks everyone! Got him attached to the base. I've never been a huge fan of the clear plastic flying base stems... just too bulky. I used a long screw to mount him. I know some people will think the metal stem looks weird but I like that it takes up less space than the clear plastic. I did something similar with my Necron Destroyers a while back (using nails instead of the plastic stems). Hopefully it will look good once painted up.

Hey, everyone: I am selling off my old Nurgle Army and would like to find a good home for it. Lots of great models and I'll be sad to see many of them go. But the truth is I just have too many armies and too little actual game time. Hoping to fund another army project (after these current Exodites) with the proceeds of the Nurgle guys.

I made a Swap/Trade thread on the Dakka forum:

Please take a look and PM me if interested. Thanks all!

Thanks everybody. Really happy with how they turned out. The Exodite force is getting there slowly but surely. Just ordered some High Elf Shadow Warriors to start making Eldar Rangers!

JeffyP's Project Log: BACK FROM THE DEAD! @ 2018/01/12 23:45:26

Post by: JeffyP

Started on the Exodite Rangers. These guys will largely be the WHFB High Elf Shadow Warriors with a few Eldar touches. There are a TON of great conversions already floating out there based on the Shadow Warrior kit so I hope to do it justice.

The Rangers are equipped with sniper rifles which present a tricky conversion situation. The eldar guns are already extremely recognizable and I don't want them just weilding shuriken guns to count as snipers. I'm going to attempt to use the guardian shuriken arms and cut up the gun itself, combining parts from the DE splinter rifle and an Ork flash gitz scope. We will see...

Tried out a few variations for the legs: Shadow Warriors, Corsairs, and Eldar Guardians. I think the Shadow Warriors have it. The gun also came together pretty nicely. Just need to green stuff around the connection to streamline the profile. I really like how it turned out though.

Well, I busted through 20 rangers this weekend, which is pretty fast for me. Normally projects stew for weeks on my desk in various states of completion! Took some WIP photos, especially showing how the guardian shuriken guns were chopped up. The DE rifles already had some leather straps, bags, and knifes attached, so I just added some green stuff to make the connections a bit smoother. Hopefully once painted they will look like long, sleek sniper rifles with some field kits attached.

All in all I am really happy with how these guys turned out. Just need to sand the bases and then off to get sprayed!

Been a while since I last posted, though I've been steadily working on the Exodite force. Got the Hemlock Wraithfighter Dragon all done and ready for paint. In fact, I just sprayed him this morning for a tournament today. It will be the first time the Exodites see the field. Very excited!

As you can see, the Hemlock is made out of a few different dragon kits from WHFB. The carapace/saddle is mostly wraithknight stuff with some random pieces here and there. The rider comes (mostly?) from a high elf kit, with the exception of the helmet. I REALLY like the dude's custom dragon helmet. While he's not the HQ/warlord in game, I imagine him being the king of the exodites or at least the highest regarded warrior. He's the baddest of the bunch and has the dragon and the armor to back it up. AND in game he inflicts fear penalties to the enemy force. LOVE IT!

So what do you all think? Is it too much of a stretch from the original kit? I know these conversions push the line a lot. I guess we'll find out today what my opponents think.

The exodites performed extremely well, going 2-0. I didn't stay for the final round. My first opponent was a really cool guy and had some great nurgle conversions himself, so he appreciated the exodites. My second opponent did not. He made multiple comments about "counts-as", "hard to tell what he's fighting", and generally just seemed upset by my army. Oh yeah, and he talked about going to Adepticon this year. I kicked his teeth in 26-7.

I took some photos from round one. I never dared pull out my camera during game two. I crammed a lot of work in the past two weeks trying to get ready for the tournament so you'll see some progress I haven't posted yet on the blog. I just now finished basing the rangers and reapers, so photos soon to come!

I am too often stunned by the weak imaginations of some of the people that play 40k. Probably because, more than any game I play, this gak just lights my mind on fire with crazy possibilities, such is the strength of the grimdark narrative ...

Anyway, well smashed, and great to see the crew in action Hoping for more reports in future

I appreciate the feedback, t-bone! Please keep coming back to see more.

Got some work done on the cabinets. Yes, that's plural. I originally went to the hardware store to pick up things to make the Eldar cabinet but, while there, realized I skipped over the poor Necrons. They need a cabinet too! The Eldar one will be very large since I will be working on them for the foreseeable future. So many dinosaurs planned! I also want to play around more with varying the high and depth of platform rather than making a decorated shelf. More of a detailed diorama. On the other hand, the Necrons will get a simple cabinet. It will be the size of the Wild Crusade one, though not as packed. I'm using this as a test run to the Exodites, easing back into the foam builds while playing around a bit more with the interior terrain.

As far as the photos go, most speak for themselves. You start with some thin wood planks, glue them together, and apply pressure. Traditionally you would use wood clamps. I use my old law school books laid on top- they're good for something after all!. Once the glue is dry, your planks have become a large panel. Glue the panels to the thick baseboards. Then do the same for the thick top board. ALWAYS MEASURE TWICE!

It's been a while but I'm back with a small update. Got a progress shot on the Autarch with Reaper Launcher. In game, his warlod trait is called "Mark of the Incomparable Hunter" which permits him to snipe enemy characters with his high damage gun. To me, that means he's the best shot in the entire army and needs a big ass sniper rifle!

Used a lot of different bits for him. The scaled hide cloak gives him a hunter feel, while the cermonial breastplate and robed armor makes him a bit more regal looking (and hence the warlord of the army in game). Overall, I'm very happy with how he turned out.

Thanks, guys. He was a pretty quick build getting ready for that last tournament!

In recent news, got some more work done on the Necron cabinet. Planning to make it resemble ancient ruins where the necrons are waking up, with a mars-like color palette (like the bases). Have a few doodads to add here and there, like columns, stones, etc. As far as construction, first I cut down a magnetic metal sheet and glued it to the base, hence all the books on top for pressure! Next, figure out which models go on this layer, and add the Table War diorama washers. This first level will contain all 12 models of my Destroyer Cult: 9 Destroyers, 2 Heavy Destroyers, and 1 Destroyer Lord. Once the glue dries, I added some background and supports for the next level to rest on. Finally, patch up all the empty space between the washers (with regular old drywall spackle) to make a nice, even ground where the bases will fit right in.

More steps to come. Yes, it looks pretty awful now but we're just worried about the broadstrokes right now. We'll add detail later. It's coming together slowly but surely!

Got a bit more work done with the second level coming together. This one will be pretty tall, with 7" columns spaced among the minis. Really hoping the ancient temple vibe will come through with these plus the stonework and whatnot). And finally, you can see a large pelvis bone there... that's the start to a giant skeleton that will be gracing the cabinet. He will be buried in the stone and rock (spray foam later on) much like GMM Studios' fantastic Worm King Throne, seen bin the spoiler tag. I'm no where near as talented as the man behind GMM Studios but his work is truly inspirational and well, I'm inspired.

Lastly, some minis in the cabinet to see what it will look like.

JeffyP's Project Log: BACK FROM THE DEAD! @ 2018/02/20 14:15:49

Post by: JeffyP

The rings are diorama washers made by TableWar, who are known for their large mobile display cases. http://www.tablewar.com/display-cases. You can get them in all shapes and sizes except for large oval bases.

The rings are designed to fit on shelves which slide out from the case. I use them much the same way, though just in permanent positions.

Thanks everybody! Really appreciate all the great feedback. Got a bit more work done on the cabinet. Started working on the skeleton's hand, which will hold a single Necron. The Skeleton will be peering down on the figure in his palm.

In other news, I played in a 1500 point tournament. At the last minute I decided to bench my Exodites and go with the Necrons. All this work on their cabinet made me want to get them on the table! In preparation that morning, I painted two heavy destoryers from silver base coat up to finish in about 3 hours. Pretty quick, at least for me! Here they are pictured alongside the normal Destroyers and finally with the Destroyer Lord.

As far as the tournament, benching the Exodites was a huge mistake. I read Necrons were underpowered/overcosted right now and MAN are people right. I got steamrolled. Oh well, live and learn. My opponent is a long time player at the game shop and is a cool guy. I had fun playing him even though he ABSOLUTELY DESTROYED ME!

It will be a messy job, but you could spray it onto something and use maybe a disposable spoon to place it where you want it.

Hi, not sure how easy it'd be, but have you thought about putting lighting in the display? I'm thinking the skeleton have creepy glowing eyes would be fairly epic.

That would be rad but I have no electrical skills whatsoever. I thought about doing some LEDs in the Dark Wolves snow city cabinet but just never got around to trying. Never even considered it for this one but I think you're on to something.

Anyways, got some update photos. The foam REALLY expanded, much more than I had anticipated. DISASTER! But one that can be managed by cutting the areas down. I'll be sure to keep posting more.

Looks like he got attacked by Papa Nurgle. It is always a risk with that stuff.

LEDs are easy, just buy a pack of the cheap battery operated ones, they seem to be everywhere these days. You can usually get them in strings of 10. Mind you if you want them permanently lit, then maybe go for the smallest set with a plug you can get. I have some from the bargain store that have 35 LED in warm white or cold white. You can tint them easy enough. Don't have to worry about soldering up a wiring loom or anything that way. Just drill from behind and insert where required.

Hope this helps bud.

Keep it up and dig the excess! What are the vertical base holders for (the 3 behind the skeleton's hand and the 2 under the obelisk) ?

It does. I'm going to look into it.

Those are rings for 40mm bases; specifically, for some scarabs. Hopefully when all is said and done, it will look like scarabs crawling across the walls.

That case is rad. Bonus points for the obelisk!

Thanks, Insectum. Glad someone noticed the obelisk!

Sprayed the rest of the cabinet with foam, this time right-side-up to get the bottom areas covered. Then went wild with a knife inside, cutting out a ton of foam. It's getting there! Really happy with how the foam is shaping into rock around the skeleton and other areas. And lastly, got spackle filled in between all the spacer rings on every level.

Thanks, Ilgoth. I'd love to see what you come up with!

Some quick update photos. Got the whole army test fitted inside for the first time, with the exception of the scarabs that will be mounted on the interior walls. Everything fits! And I think it looks great. Still need to add details all around the cabinet and clean up the scarab wall rings. But, other than that, we are rapidly approaching paint!

Long time away, but I'm back! Feels like forever since I worked on an actual model (and not just that Necron cabinet). The cabinet is still in the works and almost ready for paint but I just had to step away from it for a bit.

Anyway, I just played in a tournament at the FLGS with the exodites. Went 2-0, didn't stay for the third round. Two solid games with great opponents. Took a few pictures of the first game, but forgot during the second. There's some new units on the board which I'll post some WIPs here in a few minutes. The major additions to the force are more Shining Spears, some Eldar Guardians, and Yvraine.

Here were the quick WIP photos taken while making the Shining Spears reinforcements. I'm now up to 9 regular spears and 2 exarchs. Played one large unit in the tournament under the Ynarri detachment. Man they were great!

Next up is Yvraine, who leads the Ynarri detachment. I REALLY liked playing her in on the table but HATED the model. So, queue a conversion! I mostly used the WHFB Dark Elf Mistweaver model with a few alterations; namely, adding a more sci-fi sword and giving her a dinosaur sheild. Also extended the wisp/smoke trial behind her. Increases her height and fills out the large base. Speaking of the base, Yvraine's whole thing is empowerment through death, so of course her base had to contain tons of dead things. Lots of skulls, bones, etc. Finally, Yvraine has a cat familiar which helps her cast powers in game. We can't have a cat here in the exodites! So, the cat is now a small dinosaur running alongside her.

Really happy with how she turned out. I'll get some pictures up of her painted, but you can scroll up to see that one tournament shot for a sneak peak.

Thanks as always, guys! Really appreciate the positive feedback.

Here were the WIPs from the Guardian squad. Used some old WHFB Dark Elf infantry with Guardian arms and heads. Used Lizardmen skink shields fitted onto the shuriken gun; after all, shields fit the "Defenders" unit name nicely AND it adds some dinosaur bits to the exodite force. Also added two bannermen for the squad as well as two guys with whips (for the dinosaur heavy weapons, which haven't been built yet).

Also finished a group of warlocks for that same tournament a little ways back. They're based on the WHFB empire sorcerors kit, with a few tweaks. Each is armed with a spear and a unique object to help me track which warlock has which spell in game.

The only WIP photos I took were at the very start... oh well. Very happy with how they turned out, though I'm not so happy about the recent FAQ nerf they just got hit with. They may not even make my next list!

I've only just come across your thread. There's some lovely work in here!

I particularly like those warlocks - especially the one on the right with the orb. That's a really cool pose, even if it is pretty much straight out of the empire wizard box it's amazing how much difference an eldar helmet makes.

Really liking those rangers too.

We resumed the D&D campaign last weekend and I made a lot of new minis for this session. Really emptied out the bits box (with some ebay supplements too!) and went to town. Made a bunch of henchmen, some knights, skeletons, goblins, and mutants. The mutants are BY FAR my favorite; I had a blast making them. Just took some old ork bodies and threw a bunch of CSM, nurgle, and daemon crap on them.

The first photo is the DM's player character from an older campaign that he specifically requested a mini for. He's a giant dragonborn sorceror who is now the big-bad of the campaign. Also made him two lizard henchmen with spare bits.

 KernelTerror wrote:

Thanks man, I liked him too! He's just a hodge-podge of random unused bits. Mostly Necron but there's mecahnical stuff in there too, plus the arm and the spear are from a Lizardman kit. It all actually came together pretty well once painted.

Ilgoth wrote:

I actually recently finished the spackling between all the foam. It really tied everything together! Then gave the whole thing a coat of paint. Well, 3 coats I guess. With all the foam and insuluation, I had to use water based spray paint, which is tough to locate a specific color. It's such a specialized product that they really only seem to make the basic colors. Oh well. I did a dark brown base coat, then did a lot of light brown to surfaces, followed up with a dusting of safety neon orange. It's a good enough base.

Up next will be to dry brush with some good rust colors, pop some detail in areas, and wash with the GW paints to match the Necron bases. Then comes the worst part: drilling and hanging the door! It's so much harder than you'd think! Having to line it up perfectly is just such a pain.

Always love to hear feedback. So what do you guys think?
