AdeptiCon 2017 Hotel Reservations Go Live August 10th!
AdeptiCon returns to the Renaissance Schaumburg Convention Center on March 23rd through March 26th, 2017. Room blocks for the convention will go live at noon (CDT) on August 10th. The convention rate codes and additional information will be posted on the AdeptiCon website and on the AdeptiCon Facebook page (like us!). If past years are any indication, and they generally are, these rooms will go very quickly, so we highly recommend reserving your room as early as possible. Because space is limited, please note that a non-refundable deposit of one (1) night’s stay plus tax will be charged at the time of booking and that a minimum two (2) night stay is required.
In order to accommodate our attendees, AdeptiCon not only works with the Renaissance, but has also partnered with some additional hotels near the venue. Our 2017 partners include:
Embassy Suites by Hilton Chicago Schaumburg Woodfield
Springhill Suites Chicago Schaumburg
Residence Inn Schaumburg
So don’t get left out in the cold, torrential rain, strangely powerful wind gusts, or whatever the weather will be like in Chicago next March! Reserve your room early for what is sure to be another amazing event. See you in March!

Hey how do we reserve the rooms for those dates? When I go to the hotel website it says no rooms available.

You have to wait until August 10th (noon CDT - probably need to put that in a time converter lol).

Is there a special link to book a room or just plug in dates on the regular hotel website. ??

Is there a "newb's" guide to Adepticon somewhere? Some friends and I are thinking about going but finding a concise source of information has proven difficult and the website is not very intuitive.
Specifically, I'm trying to get an idea of the ticket costs and options, events and their costs, and an idea of what's available outside of of tournies and events.
I realize that this info may change from 2016 but just having something to get an idea for planning would be great.

I really wish they would move the event out of Schaumburg and to Rosemont. I think Attendees would like it so much more. Theres waaaaay more to do after the convention in Rosemont. Automatically Appended Next Post: Not to mention about triple the hotels. and they are all close to eat other.

Adepticon is smaller but more intense then other gaming cons. If you've been to a major con, a lot of the stuff is similar: keep hydrated, bring snacks, etc.
If you do the full for days, my advice is to only have two "all day" events, and one smaller event at most. The vendor hall gets better every year and is worth a few hours of browsing. The team tournament is awesome to check out as well. There are demos of a ton of games throughout the day. Finally, the bits swap is awesome.
Don't try to do too much. I like to have one day where I get off site during the day just to get away from the energy.
Also... be aware that it's a big drinking event, and plan your partying along your schedule. I've had more than one first round opponent who was clearly hing over.

How is the open gaming? I've heard registration is crazy and slots fill up fast so If I'm not able to register for the events I'd like is there enough to do outside of events and seminars to make it worth it?

Last year there were more than 300 events of all sorts at Adepticon. There should be more than enough to keep you busy.
Polonius is correct when he says, plan for 1 easy day. Non-stop tournaments will wear you out. Save time for a seminar, a demo game and a trip to the vendor hall (which closes doors much earlier than the rest of the convention).

It's kind of odd that Wednesday (and now Thursday apparently!) would sell out faster than the weekend nights, isn't it? I would have thought anyone coming in on Wed or Thurs would be staying Friday and Saturday, too...
Also!! Huzzah, whalemusic is making it out this year . I expect much titan!

Maybe. Current room booking is over a grand. Not really going great with buying a house.

Post by: RiTides
It should be $127 + tax per night at the Schaumburg, and I would've thought the AdeptiCon rate at the other hotels would be similar. Are you sure you got the AdeptiCon rate?
22192
Post by: whalemusic360
There do not appear to be Adepticon rates for the alt hotels, which makes me wonder what the partnership with those places actually entails. I pm'd Matthias to be sure. Between that and travel, it took me from "Definitely this year" to "Eh, maybe".

Post by: RiTides
If I were you'd I'd go ahead and reserve the weekend at Schaumburg and then figure out the other two nights, then. Lots of times people have a spare space in their room the first few days, I had to crash with someone on a Wed in 2015 . I've also pinged muwhe to see if that's just a fluke about the alternate hotels or not.

When it says there is a non-refundable deposit for single rooms, does that mean single occupancy or just booking one room? I would assume one room, but I just wanted to make sure.
464
Post by: muwhe
@godswildcard -
It is one room. If you book a four night stay, regardless of room type, and later need to cancel you would be refunded by the hotel for 3 nights.
@whalemusic360 - We have AdeptiCon blocks at the listed hotels, and are working to expand those blocks as well as work with other area hotels to offer AdeptiCon rates. The rates are valid as long as the block has rooms. So it is possible that some nights or the entire block at an alternate hotel is full.
@general info -
We are actively working these blocks to make as many rooms available as possible, however given issues from last year the hotel is obviously more cautious committing additional rooms at this point in time.
Last I checked the main hotel block is over 90% capacity with only Deluxe King rooms available for Friday and Saturday night .

Is there a link I should be using, or a group code or anything? I didn't even see an option for it. Just brought me to the same page google did.
9594
Post by: RiTides
Maybe try calling and asking for it? That's what I did for the Schaumburg, and they were able to give it to me over the phone (although for it the AdeptiCon rate showed up at the web link, or just didn't allow me to select nights where they didn't have available rooms with that rate).
464
Post by: muwhe
@whalemusic360 -
I just tested the links on the AdeptiCon hotel page, these links take you to the AdeptiCon registration page for each hotel, and they are displaying the correct rates.
http://www.adepticon.org/?page_id=11
The issue at the moment is block availability on a particular night. Ie: Marriott Residence Inn only has block availability for Fri/Sat night, meaning that the other nights have sold out of the block allocation.
Calling directly sometimes will allow them to exceed the committed block amount, but that is up to each hotel.
We will be looking at ways to add more block nights, and additional hotel options.

Hey guys, I just booked mine at the Embassy Suites, its a five minute walk from there to the Conference Center. You can book online, just put in ADC for the group code. Was 127 a night, booked from 23 to 26 comes out to 435 total for three nights. You can save some money as well, since they offer a free breakfast, an actual breakfast, not just fruit and some donuts like some hotels do.
Just go to the Hotel Info page on the Adepticon web site to see any other info you might need.
I'm looking forward to this again, third year going.

So a small concern -
I was on the website, my cart was full and contained a VIG upgrade. I go to checkout, and I am told that the VIG is no longer allowed as it is over capacity. I ended up having to back out and redo the entire registration because it would not let me check out. This happened to another friend of mine and when he backed out, he lost the ticket to the 40k Gentleman's tournament because it also became sold out.
Is there a reason a VIG upgrade was not saved for us when we clicked and added the token to my account?
8617
Post by: Hulksmash
Yeah, that happened to me too. I'm a bit annoyed by that. When I grabbed it there were like 160 left.
18698
Post by: kronk
I went through that last year. Tell your friend to email Adepticon to get on the wait list
8617
Post by: Hulksmash
So if we registered for the waitlist for an event who do we contact to see where we're at or the odds of us getting into an event?
464
Post by: muwhe
@Hulksmash
Each waitlist instance is time stamped and when a ticket for a waitlisted event becomes available the next person on the list is offered the ticket and has five days to respond before the time moves to the next spot on the list.
Right now there is still a lot of cart activity with new registrations and modifications. So once the cart settles out and we make any determination about additional slots for popular events. We will take a look at manually publishing wait lists for the larger events.
@Registration
We continue to look at ways to improve registration and Cvent is a market leader in event management platforms. No registration system is perfect and we have a list of improvements that we are actively working with them to incorporate into the next build. But part of the issue is frankly, the demand far exceeds the supply. We had an increase of 45% in 2017, over the same 3 hour period when compared with 2016. Our Horus Heresy events, for example have as many on the wait list as we had available slots. The same can be said for a number of events and seminars that sold out in minutes. We certainly are aware of the issues and frustration associated with missing out on events, or processes that then delay the execution of the webcart compounding the problem. These are the sort of processes that we are working to solution.

Formats for 40k Champs and a few others are up:
http://www.cvent.com/events/adepticon-2017/custom-19-2d340c75da4a4db9b294e1de9e02b44c.aspx
Only 2 detachments in 40k champs so I gotta come up with a new army. And no Death from the Skies (good) and no new psychic powers from Angels of Death or Traitor's Hate (wow). And every mission will have Eternal War, Maelstrom, and Kill Points components.
And this is worth quoting in full:
No Quarter: If illegal units or rules violations are found in a player's list, that player will be disqualified and removed
from all subsequent play and forfeit eligibility for any awards. Please note, sanctions will be applied in the round the
list issue is discovered. Players have a responsibility to notify judges of list discrepancies and previous round results
will not be altered. Please use the feedback form on the AdeptiCon 2017 website to ask any questions you or your
club may have regarding rules issues or legal units in advance!

Post by: RiTides
I actually don't like the automatic "that player will be... removed from all subsequent play". Why not just disqualify them, but let them continue?
The scenario I'm asking about isn't the one that happened last year, where a top table player had a list error... but one that is much more likely to come up, that of a player not in the running having a list error. Should the wording be adjusted to allow them to continue to play with a legal list, just forfeiting all chance at prizes?

Strength of schedule is apparently being used in determining a winner. When you have players with the same W-L record, then other victory conditions have to be used such as most Objectives Secured, most VP's, etc. One of those victory conditions, and one that many other game systems use, is the strength of schedule system. In this victory condition, not only is the W/L record of the player is considered, but the W/L record of all his opponents as well. The idea being that a player who faces tough opponents (high W/L records) and wins is a better player then one that has faced less capable opponents (low W/L records).
Allowing a "cheater" to continue in a tournament using strength of schedule throws the entire system off. Tournaments usually change the strength of schedule for all opponents who faced such a player to a tie condition- better then a loss, but worse then a win. It boosts your overall standing, but kicks you out of contention for the "winners" bracket.
9594
Post by: RiTides
If tournaments adjust SoS from someone who faced an illegal list anyway, then I don't see how letting them continue (but be ineligible for prizes) would cause them to have to do much differently.
But with how complicated lists can be now, having a player not in the running for prizes be unable to continue playing their games because of a list error sounds too harsh to me. Just eliminating them from prize consideration, and possibly adjusting SoS as you point out, should be enough. Any chance this could be reviewed or at least allow for TO discretion?

Glad someone ran into the same issue. I hovered over the web page, but was out of town so I had to sign-up using my iPhone, which as you can imagine took a lot longer. I want to say over 200 VIGs were left when I hit the page, and were sold out before I got done.
I think a future strategy would be to simply sign up for ViG, and any other events you think will sellout immediately, and then once you have completed that, go back and modify your schedule at your leisure.

Last year was my first taste of the championship, so I showed up with a fluffy list to simply get stomped on. How many detachments was the maximum then? Yeah, I find not using the psychic powers to be a bit of a blow, especially if Tzeentch players are going to have access to the Wrath of Magnus.

No limit to number of detachments in 2016. The winning deathstar list had 5 detachments. Limiting to two detachments makes space marine superfriends deathstars much less viable but there's plenty of other shenanigans available. We'll see if they include the ITC Invisibility nerf in their FAQ or not.
Of course, the Adepticon 40k Champs will always be a very competitive event. There are other Adepticon events better suited for fluffy armies.

Yeah, I had to settle for the Q&A, because talk time with Duncan on Sunday had filled. I also had to go waitlist for Zone Mortalis #2, which was a downer considering how many ZM events they had last year.
Losing AoD powers and having Invisibility changed might cause me to make some big changes to my list.

I was just talking to one of the organizers yesterday (Greg, Inquisitor_Malice on Dakka) and he said they'll be reviewing wait lists in January and possibly adjusting the size of some events to meet demand. So, people should Definitely sign up for events they're interested in even if they're full! We need to get the word out about this, I had no idea but it makes complete sense

Yes you can do both of them. As long as the times don't overlap the sign up system will let you sign up for both of those events. Just one of those things you have to make arrangements with some buddies or pack some food since you will be playing all day, and might not get a lot of chances to get food during any breaks that you will have.

Long War Doubles has no indication of what is and isn't allowed in lists, if team mates pull from the same pool or effect eachother's units, any of that. It has said "keep an eye here for details" since it was posted.
Adepticon Titanicus has the rules for Warhound and Reaver, but no xenos titans or the Warlord.

Yeah, and it makes them pretty broken too. I would always take Bellowing Tyrant/Battle Brew for my Ironjawz, I would love my Megaboss making six attacks hitting on 1+, wounding on 1+, -1 rend, two damage and then his two big attacks: hitting on 2+, wounding on 1+, rend -2 and d3 damage. And making a Waagh! every turn adding more attacks as well.
There are just obvious and must take choices for each army if you were able to choose your command ability and artifacts every turn. Your strategy for this tournament would be to plan for the worst Command and Artifact combo your army can get, and the best one your opponent can get.

Meh, they choose during army building in the UK and it seems fine. Personally I think you should be able to choose. But I'm good with either way. I just won't really care about the traits/artifacts unless I get a cool one

Everyone getting the choice balances it out some, though. It sucks when you get Bellowing Tyrant/Battle Brew on a roll and I get shooty melee abilities on my shooty Knight-Venator. I'd rather have us both pick and get things we want rather than random silliness happening that can change the game by a huge margin.

I've heard from a few sources that 40k Champs is going to go with a 3 source format, based on discussion and the new FAQs that were released. Is this true?
I know a lot of people will be very happy (myself included) with the move back to 3 sources instead of 2.

Requizen,
Per the AoS Championship rules packet here:
New rules and units that are released by February 23rd, 2017 will be allowed in this event.
Any new rules or units released after this date WILL NOT be allowed in this event.

Any body else in Combat Patrol and wondering when the rules will be out. Seems Combat Patrol and Kill Team are the only two without rules.

40k doubles is also pretty much without any useful rules. Adepticon titanicus only has rules for 2 imperial titans. No chaos, xenos, or warlord.

We are going to update to 3 sources officially, just a few things left to finalize before the next publish.

The Imperial Space Marine is not expressly allowed as it is not printed in a codex.
We will update the expressly forbidden language in the next update.

Pretty certain Adepticon does not run ITC.
On another note, I seriously cannot wait for Adepticon. It's the best 4-5 days of hanging out with nerds ever.

Looking at the championship rule, it does not make much sense that an elder player can potentially field 2 wraithknights while keeping them under a total cost of 700 points, while an ork player is denied the use of a stompa. For the latter, higher points do not mean that it is more powerful. If the original idea is to control OP combination, it surely helps those units that are cost-effective.

Adepticon does not use ITC missions, army composition, or FAQ. But they DO submit player scores to the ITC, so yes it's an ITC major event and you'll get ITC points for it.

It's pretty much cart closed. We freeze registration data to finalize materials and logistics for the show. Changes can be made again once on-site registration opens but we are working to have more show integration this year so any changes made weekend of won't be taken into account.

Do we have to submit lists ahead of time for events?
48215
Post by: DarkKnights44
No you don't have to submit your list before the events, just when you sign in that day they will need a copy of it, plus I'm sure in the rules they will list how many copies you should have with you.
As long as your list is legal you should be all good to go.

Kinda surprised no one is talking about the top 16 championship cut for 40k. Seems like a whole lot of Chaos demons, lots of elder variety, and some space marine, with a sprinkle of riptide wing. But no real outside the box armies.

I walked around a bit, but I only had a few minutes between rounds of my HH events.
I saw a table with a bunch of Riptides. Like 5 or 6.
A few Magnus the Reds, one was a conversion that was particularly gakky.
I don't have much else to add. Sorry.

Is it that surprising? I don't know, I mean, 40k is in the worst shape it has been since 2nd edition and we are on the eve of a new edition. I would assume that most of the people who care about which riptide or magnus list was lamest are all at the event I have been checking the adepticon forums for information of the seminars personally. It's not quite greyknights vs a dying leafblower meta where the same greyknights list was 3/4 of the meta but it's degenerated the last two years since LVO 2015 where Sean won w tyranida and orks made the top 16.

I mean there was literally only one non eldar/demon/marine list I think and it was a Genestealer cult list that did extremely well only losing in the round of 8.
I am still waiting and hoping for final results to get posted. I was very bummed and disappointed in the lack of coverage for the event compared to past years.

Well the GW studio preview pics were on SpikeyBits and elsewhere the night of the presentation, so there's definitely people here covering the event! But yeah, I think even GW is pretty clear that the 40k rules aren't in a good place and badly need updating (and will be soon) so meta coverage just isn't as in demand...

Yah that's a fair point about meta coverage. It's just sad to see nothing about the competitive part except the one spikeybits post about the top16 lists. The IC's coverage of adepticon a few years ago is what got me really hooked on the competition of 40K and the reason I go to/follow all major events I can.

I'm more interested in what won the things like Kill Team or Zone Mortalis at this point because they're novel; I think you can pretty safely assume Eldar or Daemons will win almost every major event until 8th comes out.

The 2500 point Friendly tournament allowed a lord of war up to 625 (or 650?), and I just did not have enough to deal with super heavies. Especially the ignore cover, AP1 super heavy. Armored ceremite canceled out my melta guns in the drop pod, and the heavy terrain blocked line of site for some of my Heavy Support (I took 3 squads). I'm not complaining about the terrain. I liked, and prefer, the dense boards. Of the 3 games in the Friendly tournament, I won the game against Death Guard (with Mortarion and Typhon), but lost the 2 games against super heavies.
Still, good players with well painted minis is always #1 in my book. Only 1 guy showed up with unpainted gak out of 40 or so in that tournament.
