Welcome all to the 25th round of the Unofficial Painting Challenge here on Dakka. This month marks the first round in the 2017/18 rotation! For anyone who's unfamiliar with the format, this is a simple community challenge open to anyone on Dakka, the aim of the game being to paint a model or set of models relating to the month's theme and win points for doing so!
That doesn't just mean you are limited to Adeptus Astartes and their traitor kin, though! Previously, we've had all manner of creative entries, from Orks in looted Power Armour to a baffled squad of US Marines that found themselves IN SPAAAACE... and such outside the box thinking is definitely encouraged this time round. Equally, if you do want to just paint up any kind of 40k Marine, be they Chapter or Legion, Loyalist, Traitor or Renegade, Scout or Terminator, Tactical Marine or Chapter Master, then go for it!
How To Enter
- You may enter up to 5 MODELS as a SINGLE ENTRY, and are permitted one entry per member per month. If you enter multiple models, they should ideally be related in some way, such as part of the same squad, unit or scene if you are doing a diorama
- You MUST post a 'proof' picture of your entry in the thread of the state it was in before you started working on it; this must be either unassembled, unpainted, primed or coated a single colour. Entries that do not submit a valid Proof Picture will not be eligible for voting.
- After this, you may post WIP pictures in this thread and your own if you wish, and on completing the entry, you may post up to 5 final pictures IN THIS THREAD that will then be used for voting. Please note that pictures in a montage or collage picture will be considered individual images for this purpose, so while these types of presentation are certainly acceptable, please keep the image limit in mind when compiling them. For example, a collage of 4 images and one separate image would count as your 5 picture allowance.
So What Do I Win?
- Points... and points mean... bragging rights for the next month! Following the vote, points will be awarded to every entrant. This year, the Points you receive will be equal to the Percentage of Votes your entry receives in the final Voting thread; if you get 10%, you get 10 points, if you get 6% you get 6 points, so on and so forth.
These points will be used to form a league table, which will be updated month on month as the results come in.
How Long Do I Have?
This challenge begins 1st of March and will end at midnight GMT on the 31st of March. After this, I shall compile the finished entries into a new thread, and voting will run for 5 days.
Awesome! Now to pick what to enter...might do my repainting/conversion of a LEOOP metal termie chaplain into my "counts as draigo" for my "counts as grey knights" army since I already finished my dreadknights though I'd have loved to enter them. Or may go the opposite route and think of something to enter for my Death guard army. Perhaps my LE terminator lord conversion/repaint with Tartaros pattern lightning claws. Hmm so many options when you basically only play space marine-esq armies!
Seriously, cheers again to ZoBo for stepping up for hosting duties while I'm several feet deep in essays and deadlines! Hopefully it won't be too taxing for you... though I probably should have mentioned the SM round is always one of the busiest months! Oops
If I'm really lucky my entry will turn up today and I can get straight to work, hopefully I'll have a proof later on.
I'm in with the 30th Anniversary Imperial Space Marine. Here's my proof:
He's only primed now, but he'll get Dark Angels colors. I figured it would be easier to paint the gun and shoulder pads separately. Hopefully I can finally finish a Space Marine entry (after being 0 for 2 of the others).
I was going to enter this last month but the models took 2 weeks to deliver! (Also some of the bitz have been painted but the actually models haven't and I still need to do some GS sculpting, cutting up, etc.)
Renegade Deathwatch (in zip lock bags for your convenience):
Seriously, cheers again to ZoBo for stepping up for hosting duties while I'm several feet deep in essays and deadlines! Hopefully it won't be too taxing for you...
haha...no problem man, like I said, I'm on here enough anyway, might as well make myself useful

...you dirty rat! ...bah! 'tis no matter, let them come! The hordes of entries will break upon me like waves upon the rocks! I will outlast them! (hammy enough? )
@ZergSmasher nice, good luck ...I do kinda regret not picking up one of those dudes when they were around ...meh, I've got plenty of old plastic beakies and wacky old metal marines and stuff already...that's still a sweet model though
I'm definitely joining in again this month - have plenty of Deathwatch still waiting to get a lick of paint, so I'll be entering a five-man veteran team!!
Count me in, have not done anything with my snapfit Marines for a while, have to start converting some of them into assault marines so will post proof tonight.
Battle for Macragge squad Octavian & Atreus + Space Marines Fancy Equipment, there is also a pilot but he will break the 5 pic limit..2nd challenge entered
Proof Pictures below. Good luck to us all! got a feeling this challenge will be dominated by only a handful of challengers.

Spoiler:
Just making sure you know...you can only submit up to 5 pics of up to 5 finished models at the end, ok?...so, by all means, feel free to go and paint that full squad if you want - more painting is always a good thing! ...but then just pick the 5 models that you think turned out the best or whatever, for your finished entry, ok?
@ ZoBo ,Okay i know, will be x2 pics of each squad half in different formations, and x1 of the equipment, will post pilot varras in my blog so no worry's.
Looks like the perfect time to introduce myself to everyone, and get some of my army painted up. I have some thousand sons (scarab) terminators which are still in putting together mode...will post up some proof later today

Welcome! always good to see a new face around here ...good luck with the scarab terminators, they look like great models, and I haven't actually seen many of them painted yet...looking forward to seeing yours done

Do I get bonus points for introducing @SymbioticKaos?

I've been wanting to build a squad that, for one reason or another, has been forced to use various non-marine weapons. Seems like a good time to start working on that idea. Though I'm still waiting on a couple parts to arrive first.
Finished The Battle for Macragge Special Equipment x4 Magna Class Power Field Generators,x1 Thunderhawk Beacon,x1 Fusion Core (Nuke) Count this as "one" of my 5 pictures.
Thought I would get them out of the way so I can get on to the marines squad half's.
To clarify, your final entry must be 5 models or less. The terrain is fine as that's just set dressing, but as far as stuff on bases goes, 5 is the limit, so half the squad at most. Sorry if that's what you meant and I'm just misreading.

Nice work on that terrain though.
Wait it's a 5Model limit and 5picture limit damn, fair enough half the squad it is.

Hey guys. This will be my first ever entry here at dakka and seeing as Primarchs are starting to come back into fashion thought I'd have a go and throw another Vulkan into the pot. Sorry zobo. Hope to get this done as i have a bad habit of buying more than i paint. Cheers and heres proof.
I've been working on my Xth legion, so I actually have something to enter in this one.... Medusean Immortals 1/2 of the unit. Pardon the poor quality of the proof image, my only camera is a 3DS
Righto, just woke up and got all the new entries added to the OP ...13 entries so far, nice work everyone
@n1ceguypaul - ohh! We havin' a Vulkan-off?? ...so uhh, do we start smack-talkin' eachother or something now? How does this work? ...nah, it's all good, good luck! - hope he can both pull it off!
And a WIP. Poor lighting (it's done horrible things to the actually pretty smooth IRL tabard!) as he's glued to a stand while painting and thus doesn't fit in the light box properly, but you can hopefully see where this is going. Still lots to do, but since I had the camera out I thought I might as well get some progress pics. I'm dead pleased with the armour, especially the verdigris effect which was a total experiment.
I'm at a bit of a loss as to what direction to go with the cloak. Red is out as whenever I do red cloaks they end up really dull for some reason. I do a decent white/light grey, but that might leave the model too monochrome. The other ones I was considering were a deep purple or a goldy brown, but I'm not entirely sure how I'd go about pulling those off. Any thoughts?
@paradigm, what about a browny - parchment colour? then you could do a bit of script overtop maybe (like just on the bottom). It'd match his tabard. Assuming the watchmaster would have script, I am not 100% up on all the SM variations and such.
I may be in the middle of selling my house, packing my house, applying for visa, shipping everything I own to a different hemisphere, including my cats, have almost all my hobby supplies packed... all ready to leave the UK in only 18 days for a new life in NZ...
but!
I also took on a commission recently for a squad of Terminators, because insanity is good company. So. I shall be entering those
Photos of them built will come once they arrive.
And get built.

What colour is the power armour going to be? Is it staying that silvery color? Absent a different armor colour, I might try turquoise to call back to the verdigris, shaded with ruddy purple to tie in with your fleshtone.
This is a project I have wanted to do for a while, so I hope it works out the way it looks in my head....
I've always liked Tyranid Hunters - I like the combination of squeaky-clean Ultramarines with the gritty damage of rending claws and Tyranid guts.
Below is the proof pic for the Brothers Karamazov!
Lots of cool entries, looking forward to seeing all these painted!
My own is pretty much done now, I went with a purple cloak and it ended up fitting the palette nicely. I might amend these pics down the line if I do make any changes, but for now, consider this my finished entry.
Probably shouldn't mention that the mini was only delivered at 3pm this afternoon, then! Definitely one of my faster jobs start-to-finish, but I did work on it solidly pretty much all afternoon so it's fairly average for me in terms of actual time under the brush.

Oh my...How the f... do you do it. SO damn fast. It's nuts. Looks insanely good, btw!
think I've got Vulkan's base pretty much done...I'll have to see how it looks when Vulkan's done, and standing on it, but for now, I'm happy enough with it...oh boy...now I have to actually start painting Vulkan...halp ...oh, the dead marines on the base are iron warriors, because my brother plays iron warriors
While I'd love to pledge the new Guiliman model, it's not going to be out for a good week yet. After barely finishing last month's entry in time, I don't think I can afford that extra time, so instead I'll paint him some friends: Invictarus Suzerain's.
@ZoBo- Thanks for running the challenge this month!
I've never collected space marines of any flavor, so I was a bit at a loss for what to do this time. But when I was rummaging through my To-Paint drawer, I found this guy
So this is my entry! A space wolf priest which, if I recall correctly, was a promo figure at a Games Day a long time ago.
@keezus- I am really excited to see the Taskmaster when it is finished! It is a great mini and fits the theme well. I was thinking of painting a nomad as well before I found the wolf priest.
Good job on the base Zobo. Really like the feel of it hopefully gonna put some paint on mine this weekend. The base needs to be done as vulkan is so intimidating it might take a while to build up to actually stating him.
Quick wip, got my entry undercoated and base layers on. Feels strange starting from white after all the iron warriors I've done lately, hopefully I'm not too rusty...
Ive got 4 DV Librarians in the mail; that Should be here on Monday. Instead of trying to do 27 guys and choose best 5 for the contest. Im just going to do four guys in the hopes that i can get them finished in time. As im also finishing up some HH blood angels for my brother (just their hair and backpacks left) and getting my 4 rhino, 1 razor 1 pred and 1 ares raider at least edge highlighted this month.
Well, after a three month hiatus, I'm finally back in with an entry. I'll be doing an assortment of iron warriors dreadnoughts this month. (A "Triumvirate of Dread" if you will )
Basecoating for my Imperial Space Marine is done:
Shading will be the next step, then highlights. This mini is not as hard as I thought to get painted. A lot of the highlights will be easy to drybrush, as well.
Still waiting on a few bits to get started like his shield and shoulder pads but this is my Proof pic for my counts as Draigo as a part of my counts as grey knights chapter I created who are an elite sect of the thousands sons who remained loyal to the emperor and have been tasked with hunting down Ahriman, leading to a seemingly never ending journey across the galaxy hunting him.

It's a nice idea but all of the TS were loyalists, the Imperium forced them to turn to chaos because the Emperor believed Magnus was a Heretic. Sorry for being a fluff lawyer.

Good luck with the conversion anyway.
This is true but after the emprah vanished Magnus the legion remained faithful to their primarch and not the emperor, also after the rubric they became mindless automatons hellbent on following Magnus and Ahriman in the destruction of the imperium that betrayed their faith.
Also Ahriman was a bad seed that led many of his brethren against the imperium, this why this chapter must hunt him down etc. this sect is not anti-Brotherhood of Dust than T. sons.
Yes but how did your chapter end up with the Imperium? All TS were branded as traitors so the entire legion fled to the EoT to escape their destruction.
mrhappyface wrote:Yes but how did your chapter end up with the Imperium? All TS were branded as traitors so the entire legion fled to the EoT to escape their destruction.
Not so. The Athaenean Cult were sent away from Prospero prior to the Wolves attack. They returned later to find Prospero a ruin. I don't think it's been expanded upon as to what happened to the whole cult, but certainly Revuel Arvida went on to become Janus, the First Grey Knight Supreme Grand Master. It's suspected that, due to similarities in psyker prowess, armour colouring and the badge of the Corvidae (Who often worked in tandem with the Athaeneans and may have been dispatched alongside them), that this Brotherhood may have become the Blood Ravens - but that's not for certain.

I was unaware that any TS were allowed to intergrate back into the Imperium, I knew some were not upon Prospero during the burn but for some reason I believed they had turned or had been turned away by the Imperium. I'll have to do some homework.
It's a fictional setting. If someone wants to be creative with their models and give them a back story, it's absolutely fine, and is one of the primary draws of the hobby. The fluff is supposed to inspire that creativity, not restrict it (within the parameters of the existing rules, obviously).
The story I had is that pre heresy they were a sect or cabal, have you, of elite powerful psykers of the legion tasked with gathering relics and knowledge from ancient galactic past. At the time of the heresy they were brought to Malcador to aid in forming the infancy of the inquisition because of their knowledge of ahriman's plans for eternal knowledge and their proximity to him in the times leading up to the heresy. Though their brethren were branded traitors, they were loyal through and through, enough so that the sigilite deemed them the only ones capable of the arduous task of hunting Ahriman down. It is know that the inquisition was founded by the sigilite, four lords of terra, and one loyal-remaining member from each of the "traitor" legions. Commander Osiris of the Sons of Opet was the representative for the Thousand Sons Legion.
For those that missed it, Nevelon kindly set up a 'year in review' thread for the 2016/17 rotation, if you're someone who entered a few challenges last year please do head over there and post a collection of your entries in one place, it's awesome to see:

Certainly will do Para, will take a little while to put them all together
Drummernathan Rule of cool always wins in my book.
feltmonkey wrote: Midget Gems painting something that isn't orks! I'm not sure I'll be able to cope.
I know!, I feel naked. I don't have "orks made it" excuses for sloppiness now....
I was originally just going to paint these guys but me being me I just couldn't resist adding extra little touches to them. I tried to put them in cool positions, chopped up some spare bits I had and added some BA iconography to them so they are much more BAs now rather than just generic. I also dremeled out the head area so I could fit some unhelmeted heads in.
4 stock DV Librarians, dont have any axes so all are getting the detault swords. Also included is Logan Grimnar, though i did not yet get his sled.. so im just going to submit him sans base... This is more for me anyway as for the times i finished on time last year i can count my total votes on one hand..
Making good progress! Got all my armor layering done for the main body and a layer of paint down on all the purity seals and parchment as well as the wing details. Next up gotta paint all the chains and metal and then get started on the arms. Still waiting to get the shield and shoulder pads from a buddy and then I can get those painted up to match. Can't wait to get them done so I can really go to town on all the details and going to get the book/banner primed and painted and fitted so I can attach it once it's painted. Hoping I don't run into any snags this month so I can get my entry painted, photographed, and submitted asap! Though the model is originally a chaplain, I feel he will make a suitable counts as draigo model when all is said and done!
Didn't get to finish last months challenge as I was abroad with work but it got me starting painting again so jumping into this months one.
I just finished making up the Dark Vengeance box before I left so I've got lots to choose from. Going to pick a termie and a chaos marine to do this month. I still don't know what colour scheme I'm going to go with either so we'll see what happens! For chaos I'm thinking Iron Warriors, no idea for the normal SM though
The only thing marine I had to paint up was some death company but I did that last year I think. So I went and bought a baal predator, my wife's annoyed but I'm happy =)
Torso, arms and head are all magnetized Why? I don't know.
Waiting for a friend to get some water effects to play with. Toxic swamp with skulls and maybe Victoria sleeveless arms, since I won't be using them anyways
Some progress pics. Only thing that wasn't repainted from the original is the skull helmet. I liked it too much but may still repaint it just to be fair.
Just gotta do up the arms and he's donesies. Still waiting to get a shield for him from a buddy and a shoulder pad for his sword arm, but I feel like I'm making good progress and am happy with him so far!
Heres some progress pics on the base for Vulkan. Went for legions that i havent tried before as the dead guys, never gonna do them again as lightening is a pain in the butt for Night Lords and hate painting pale colours like the Death Guard.
haha...kinda funny though, I came real close to going with either death guard or night lords...if I hadn't settled on salamanders, it would've been one of them...I was already doing post-heresy nurgle death guard anyway (I kinda prefer the extra-grungy, nurglified look over the cleaner 30k style) so I decided against doing them for 30k too, and salamanders just narrowly won me over against night lords with a combo of fluff, colour scheme, and playstyle...salamanders were just too cool to pass on
n1ceguypaul wrote: Heres some progress pics on the base for Vulkan. Went for legions that i havent tried before as the dead guys, never gonna do them again as lightening is a pain in the butt for Night Lords and hate painting pale colours like the Death Guard.
Cheers guys. My 40k salamander army kind of evolved from 30k. I was reading some of the fluff and found the shattered legions with i think it was Shadrak Meduson (think thats about right). It had the Iron hands, Raven guard and Salamanders all fighting together. Then just fell into the salamanders from there. Even ordered some sholder pads for all 3 legions which are stuffed with all the other junk. Now after reading more of Vulkan I'm glad i got these green bad boys.
++Subject. Stevian Augustus. His Chapter has been told that he perished during his techmarine training. Blast furnace accident. There was no body. The Mark II Modified Astarte project is unhindered. Permission to execute?++
***Execute. Omnissiah preserve us.***
++Executing. He is all.++
Finished! I may have rushed them a little because I wanted to enter a local killteam campaign with them but I am still quite pleased with them.
Probably won't have a chance though taking a look at the other entries.
Ive made some progress on the librarians. They are base coated and washed and drying under a heat lamp, cept for their faces.. i save skin for last step, as a i hate it and try to put it off..
first base color applied to the wolf king, on just his axe.
Ill take some pictures tomorrow before i start the highlighting. These are black dark angels, not green dark angels.. as m'lord cypher is in need of a librarium conclave.
Edit: I have to tell you guys.. It IS VERY strange to be using a (screamer) pink and a purple wash to end up with dark bright red.

I was under the impression that Janus' true identity remains unknown, and is thought to possibly be Omegon.

I have to say when I first saw this, I thought that receipt behind him was the BIGGEST purity seal I'd seen and I was just nodding my head, yeah that'd be the right size... then I realized it wasn't part of the picture lol
Ive made some progress with the fallen librarians. Just need to clean up some details on their wings then wash the wings and do more then just base coat the power swords. I havnt named them as of yet. but I used the wing feather colors and darker shades/washes/inks/ghost tints to try to mark ranks. I used Dark gold/mithril to mark the Codiciers; Bright Gold, mithril, amythest row of feathers to mark the Epistolary. My Chief Librarian is marked by a few more wing colors.
My entry is nearing completion, just some highlights and the base left to do. Here's my latest WIP shot:
Oh, and of course I'll have to actually assemble this guy too. Liking all the different Space Marine stuff from everybody so far!
Slow progress for me for the month so far. Not really anything to show for the first third. A few base coats down and that's it. Been on a short holiday and now we have the builders in, so not a lot of time for painting. Still giving it a go though!
Still In this, but painting slowly,Lots of time left before the deadline anyways,Some WIP below, pilot got in there too,but i'am not entering him so just pretend he's not there.
I forgot to actually clean the models (of mold release) before I assembled them so they're going ot get a quick dunk in my vat of purple power. And hopefully not need reassembly after.
it's been fairly reasonable here, I might be able to actually spray prime them later for once (which would be nice)
Given certain recent events *cough*Gathering Storm*cough* , I found it appropriate to paint another Chaos Space Marine for my Remnants warband... which fits in nicely with this month's challenge
Here's the proof pic for my entry, say hello to Galgar, one of the infamous Fallen and evil bastard extraordinaire:
I'm wondering if I should give him a bigger base though...

If the rest of your army is on those bases, just run with it. But he is crowding that one pretty bad; a larger base would suit him.
This guy was a lot of fun to paint, and my terrible photos don't do it justice (to be fair, I did use a pair of iPhone 6s for lighting, so that could be it). Im also much better at painting dark colours, as I prefer painting battle-worn minis, and it was nice to get a break from painting red.
The leviathan's more or less done, just need to add transfers, weather and base it.
WIP:
Spoiler:
Work on this one was pretty glacial, spent a lot of time hemming and hawing over placement of hazard stripes etc. The other two should be far quicker given that I already have a concrete plan for them.

Ooh that looks nice, I've been resisting the leviathan for a while now, but seeing it in Iron is testing my resolve.
I've been working on the Fallen Angel some more, he's pretty much finished apart from his base (which I've decided to keep as-is, that way he fits with the rest of his buddies in the army)
Blown away with Paradigm's speed and quality and loving DanceOfSlaanesh's model - that shoulder pad is brilliant.
On top of that, we seem to have a 'Vulkan-off'!
Anyhow, dunno if I will get all of these finished to add to the original two, but thought I better post a proof pic just in case.
One more battle brother and a couple of tyranids to set the scene...
Cheers MG. I tried something new on the axe, I painted the red beneath, then, when it was dry flooded the panel with black ink and used an empty brush to draw it off the edges. Quick edge highlights and it was done
Can't believe you guys are finishing up some of your entries already. (Think I need to sell the kids. Oh and the wife for that matter.) Loving all the entries so far. Will post some WIP pics as soon as I actually get to do some. Good job so far though guys.
Well, I got caught up paiting an ORS Heavy Cruiser for Halo: Fleet battles, so I'm a little late, but here's my entry. I had thought of doing a Tu'Shan conversion but the eBay sellers lacked the parts I wanted to do him justice. So instead I've had to settle for a boring continuation of my last entry - two more Salamanders. A Mk III Sergeant and another Mk IV in VHA. Dull, I know, but I had a lot of fun last month so I though a boring entry was better than none at all!
Proof:
Good luck all - there's some canny looking entries this month!
I gave up on the wolfking. as i was gluing him together, his axe split in four pieces, his gun went flying somewhere.. half his helm also went flying though this landed in the garbage.. So i just chucked him, still have all the sled parts. ill do something else with it later. For now, Im going to figure out who the 5th guy will be to go with the Fallen Conclave. The librarians are good still, just need their bases done.
Honestly kinda wishing I'd pick something with a better colour scheme than Iron Hands, black and grey is kinda boring :( but maybe I can jazz it up more on the special units etc. Until then, just trying to get a good covering on the black.
Just FYI, if you wanted to be fluffy with him, you can make the bolter grip bone coloured. In the background, an Imperial Fist gives his bolter to Drenn, which has a bone grip with scrimshaw etched on it.

Wow, thanks AoV. I still haven't played a game of DW: OK and have only glanced through the book. I like the black grip but giving a nod to the story sounds very cool... hmmmm
Some really nice stuff already being submitted, puts my entry to shame. I especially love Bottle's take on Drenn Redblade. I only hope mine turns out that well when I get around to painting it.
Speaking of my entry, it's all done! Here are my final pics:
I had a lot of fun painting this model. I feel like it turned out okay for my skill level, but I really need to learn to take better photos. Maybe I need to bite the bullet and get a proper lightbox and actual daylight lamps.
Wow, this is actually perhaps my earliest finish in one of these contests. Good feeling knowing I don't have to worry about my entry any more.
Slow progress from me this time; half way through the month already and the honour guard not even fully basecoated! Can't seem to find the time or motivation somehow. Maybe i should just get on with the Salvador Dalek painting I'm supposed to be doing for a friend's birthday instead...
As it's only half way through the month, is it okay if I try and get another model done for my entry? I am enjoying painting these Deathwatch and want to keep the ball rolling (Drenn Redblade was my first mini of 2017 - shocking!)
Everything about the vulcan is good/great except the skin. It looks like a leathery ballsack to me, which probably says a lot more about me than your painting.
@Paradigm - Superb as always Paradigm - I'm liking everything about the muted silvery tones of the armour set off against the cloak - excellent!
@Bottle - A great job on such a dynamic model. I particularly like the subtle weathering and (strangely enough), I find the white hair adds to the subtle effect of your painting more than the usual red/ginger hair would - fantastic work! I'm just biting my nails waiting for you to upstage my Salamanders - It'll be worth it to see how you tackle Branatar,
@ZergSmasher - Great job on your Dark Angel - the dark green and clean, smooth paintjob definitely complements the classic look of the marine - well done! Speaking from experience, I can tell you just a couple of good lamps and a decent camera make a whole world of difference to presentation.
@ZoBo - Damn, but that's one nice looking Vulkan - It's everything I'd expected and more. I love the leathery drake mantle! I was too cowardly to attempt realistic leathery hide on my own Vulkan, so I settled for an easier reddish-orange - but you've absolutely nailed it. I love the vibrancy of the green as well, especially in contrast to the nice powder blue of the fallen masonry - just wow!
So many excellent entries starting to pop up I'm starting to get nervous - I best get a move on.
Ive chosen to bring a Deathwing Champion wielding a Halberd forged from a Calbanite warblade that shattered during the reclamation attempts upon Caliban.
His name will become known once he has been painted. Still debating if he is wearing black or bone colored TDA..
I'm a bit behind schedule but should make the deadline. I've got my Baal predator to a state where it looks like its fresh out of the factory gates, one day I may keep a model in this state, but not today. During the next week I'm going to feth it up a little with battle damage and weathering. Shame 95% of my nice neat edge highlighting wont be visible. =D
Sorry this took so long to get up here, but as this is my first comp I am only going to do a small selection from 1000 sons scarab terminators. Here is the proof of the two models I am entering:-
Well done zobo on that paint job kinda wanna curl up into a ball now gonna be a sprint to the finish line for me though so hopefully it comes out half as good. Salamandwrs in safe hands with that level painting. Also liking the guilliman in disguise model paint jobs further along than mine in a day. I want to cry.

Maybe our respective painting comp termies will face off against each other next time we play
Feel like i mighr have to dissappoint the wife tonight instead of watching film/tv and having a cwtch gonna have to play catch up and actually paint something. Everyone here gonna be pushing my timing with painting i think. Keep it up guys loving this so far
Wow, i love what you've done with it. It's a little worrying how good a base model it is for a Daemonic Abaddon, and the loin cloth seems to have done wonders for the pose! Can't wait to see it finished.
On a side note, how do you guys paint stuff so fast?
Yeah, the photoshop of Guilliman with a cloak also helps fix the pose; either way a loincloth/cloak seems to fill in the weird wide-leg stance and gives a sense of movement which justifies the twisted pose to your eye.
It's weird that GW didn't put either one of those on the base model, particularly when pretty much every other SM character has them.
Guess I'll have to break out the green stuff when I get him!
Oh and Melcavuk, you've done a fantastic job there, a really natural looking conversion, rather than "Guilliman with a few Chaos bits stuck on".
I've been working on a Space Marines Assault Squad based off of the bad guys from Buzz Lightyear of Star Command. Next up is Gravatina.
Here's the inspiration.
Here's the WIP. I forgot to take a "before" photo so I hope Para can give me a pass. Mea cupla.
Hmm, looking at this I see the blue needs to have a wee bit more green in it.
Paradigm wrote: Nice work Nev, that sword is very cool. Don't think I've seen you try power weapons that way before, it definitely works!
It was a bit of an experiment. Silver base. Nulan Oil over that, and then the green soulstone paint on top. I’ve tried using the soulstone paints on weapons before, but generally over a clean base. The wash dries unevenly, giving the “power field” a bit more flicker to it. Not a consistent glow.

I’m happy with the way it turned out.
I noticed that as well had to give two nice coats of it to make it look anything worthwhile. I'll definitely try it with nuln oil between the base and soul stone paint next time! Thanks for the tip!
Ive mostly finished up the Champion and the four librarians tonight, their bases are drying at the now. Im happy to be done ahead of time this time I look at these four librarians and the two i made almost a year ago. Ive gone leaps and bounds.. past year ive been inspired alot by the awesome figures in these challenges. Ill take some pictures and get them uploaded in a either a couple hours if its bright today or or later tonight.
I have exams until the 31st. So either I try and rush one dude over the next four days or try and spend all Friday 31st rushing the three of them. I don't actually know if I have Friday free though. Oh well. I did manage to get down one and a bit layers of retribution armour.
Managed to get the airbrush out and i think i managed to do a decent job for my first attempt, wasn't sure if the zenithal had even worked until i put the red on as the silvers just blended into each other.
Also is a bit orange but thats ok, should be able to finish him up tomorrow.
Finished! Squad Octavian Battle for Macragge Edition Models,Well happy with the way they came out,For more pictures click my Lab/Blog bottom of my post, more closeup pics pilot varras etc.
Crap, crapcrapcrap. I forgot to enter my guy! I've been working on him for all of March, but here's my proof. It was uploaded 2/23, but i'll give an up-to-date photo here soon.
Good work everyone. So many great conversions, its really inspiring me for next months challenge.
I've finished in plenty of time for once. Let see if I can get an ork trukk done before the next painting challenge starts =)
I think this may be the first of my Blood Angel vehicles I've entered. I've done 2 rhinos, a drop pod and a storm raven like this so far, so no experimenting for me this month just applying a formula I like.
Also I tried a cheap light box I bought. But I think I need to take it work (where i took my other pictures) as I cant eliminate the shadows without making the images too dark.
Thanks both, it takes about two thirds of the entire time spent painting the model but I did it on one model so now I need to do it to all of them. I'm glad you like it =)
Managed to finish off my kill team for the month! Pictures came out really badly, however I don't think I'm going to get a chance to take any better ones unfortunately! So, for now at least, here is the finished product(s?)
Here ya go guys. May it inspire someone to try something like this contest, even as a fairly new painter. its alot of fun. I think ive come a decent way in a year. Cant include the cypher with the challange as i didnt start him this month. did base him though.
Last photo is a pair of dv librarians that are almost exactly a year apart in time.
Lord Cypher ordered us to form a conclave. The Champion has come from meeting with him letting him know mission accomplished.
Strange blue sun light has tinted everything on that world..

Spoiler:
Cheers mate, that kill team looks pretty damn good too
The Gravatina inspired Assault Marine is complete. It is one of (what will be) six villains from the television show Buzz Lightyear of Star Command.
Inspiration
Gravatina as an Assault Marine
The photos are a bit darker than I cafe for, but I've been experimenting with a new camera app for my phone. I may have to succumb an get an actual light box.
Lots of good stuff this month. Holding it to five votes will be impossible.
Good lord so many beautiful jobs in this months! and the conversions oy! and the tanks!!! <3
Ok, well I'm trying to take a pic of my finished ones - but they're coming out really badly (the picture, no comment on the SM). Will have to clean desk and try again (that's gonna take a bit)
Anyone have advice about a good colour to use as a backdrop for black miniatures? I was thinking of using my usual red, but it doesn't seem to help. Anyway, I may go out and get a couple more foam sheets to use, in different colours see if that helps.
Reasonably pleased with them. This is the 3rd scorched gun barrel I've done, but the first I've been pleased with. Still not exactly what I was going for, but it's okay.
Loads of great entries this month. Looking forward to voting now
JamesY wrote: @guildenstern might be an obvious question, but have you tried white or pale grey?
Sorry I haven't had time to really read much or take my pics >< I'm fixin to take my #2 son off to visit university campuses since it's spring break and he's graduating this year!
RE: the HL'ing - yeah I went up to Administrum grey, I didn't want to go to white but I'm thinking I might go back in later and do that anyway. I still need to get the pic up here - I'll have to do that by tonight.

I think your scorch mark looks good, but goes too far on the barrel. I think the transition could also be helped with some brown. I think it would be more effective if the black was 1/3 of the length it is now, and the blackness tapers back into the silver. In the past, I'd drybrush the scorch marks onto where I wanted them, starting with a tin-bitz (warplock bronze) onto the gun, with less brown the further back it goes... repeat with dark brown, but drybrushing even less far back, and then black. I don't know if that makes sense or not.
Mate, some really great minis this month...incredible paint and modelling. I'm gonna be using all of my votes this month for sure.
Anyhoo, here are my finished Tyranid Hunters - I had a great time with this project. Many thanks to Paradigm, Zobo and everyone else for running this challenge, it is really motivating and pushing me to learn to paint better each month. Looking forward to 'primal' April.
@Chris56,Well cool that looks, neat alien Ichor on the hammer, and an almost cute lone ripper gotta work out how to make stringy alien blood sometime i have nids in need!
So, new set of pictures didn't really come out, have a few new and a few repeat of the mousling for my final ones:
Was happy with how it came out, because I was mostly looking at the head, but then I looked at the rest of it when doing the pics, and its really a rather ragged job, isn't it? Shoulder insignia especially are bothering me, and not sure why...
Only technically, given the paint scheme and parody target, but hey, technically correct is best correct.
Edit: I was going to do up my irmadinhos, figuring future space river smugglers probably count, but just wasn't grabbing me.

The Reaper mouseling line is sweet. Nobody carries the line in my neck of the woods, so its interwebs or special order only.
Hey guys finally finished Vulkan but not happy with my set up for photos as this is the first time taking pictures of miniatures.
Hope they are ok and look forward to the rest of the entries. Congrats to all those who get this months entry finished and lets start thinking about the next one.
I just want to make sure about something, the day deadline is midnight GMT, I'm in s.a and run on cat does that mean I have till 2 o'clock in the morming of the 1st? As I will only be able to finish painting on Friday evening.

It says GMT, but what that translates to is 'whenever I get around to compiling the vote thread the next day'. That's usually around mid-afternoon UK time, so you've got a fair bit longer. And I can hold off a couple of hours if I know I'm waiting on an entry.

Hey guys soory I've not ben active on the thread the last 2 weeks, Its all been a bit busy in RL at the moment.
Thought I would post a quick WIP to let you know I'm still alive and the entry is still progressing. Getting the heads in the holes was a right pain in the ass but worth it I think for a different take on the Cataphractii Terminators.
Nice throwback conversion! I have an incomplete Artemis somewhere... one day I'll ebay some bitz to build him.
Automatically Appended Next Post: @Vejut: Does your mouseling have a name? If not, I'd like to suggest Rodent Gruyeremann, Primarch of the Ultramousines.
Well, I'm gonna have to bow out at the 11th hour (literally it seems) - life and circumstances seemed to conspire against me this month. That said, I take great consolation in seeing the (yet again) fantastic entries this month. Rest assured that I'll most certainly be casting my vote even if I didn't complete my entries. Here's hoping I get around to completing an entry for next month
Elbows wrote: Lovely work (minus the boy-band hairdos!). I'm not much for Cataphractii but yours look excellent.
Thanks Elbows, yeah in my mind the Blood Angles have a lot of blonds not sure where thats come from. Could be all the pictures of Sanguinius being blond. It gave me an excuse to try it out anyway, not many blond Orks
Nice to see you back and still kicking ass Bottle, the kill team guys look fantastic as always
Really nice work felt and Modock (great base)
EmberlordofFire8 don't worry there are some amazing painters who enter, I try to see what they have done and incorporate 1 new thing each month into my entry. Some better photos would definitely help us see your work in the future.
Well looks like over 10 people will be getting a vote this month,so many different takes on what people think space marines should look like it's just damn impressive.
Honestly I never even thought i would get this month finished so i'am happy with that alone, also learned new things, and got my first squad half of ultras painted up which look well cool in my eyes anyways, bring on next month.
Just got mine finished up, barely! Not perfect, but at least I can call him done for now.
Here's the first space marine I've painted in many years, using my good friends's chapter colors.
Wolf Priest Ragnar:
Spoiler:
Some excellent work this month! I'm not much of a marine guy, but some of the primarchs and deathwatch look awesome! That mouse guy is pretty cute too, haha.
Sorry its late. had to pull down a fence yesterday.
anyhow
doesn't even hold a candle to some other ones but you have to finish what you start and its a nice break from tau.
also the photos go from bad to worse but you can at least see what I was going for
Nice work Manalishi, a lot of painting to get through in a month.
@ApaceKittens - I can't see your images (might just be me)
I've run out of time to work on mine so will submit my guys as they are, would have liked to do some weathering and battle damage on them etc.
Congrats to everyone that has finished and good luck!
Final Pics for my Blood Angels Cataphractii Terminators. I do like how they came out in the end, adding the gems and BA iconography has made them a bit more interesting than your standard Cataphractii.
