Welcome all to the 27th round of the Unofficial Painting Challenge here on Dakka. For anyone who's unfamiliar with the format, this is a simple community challenge open to anyone on Dakka, the aim of the game being to paint a model or set of models relating to the month's theme and win points for doing so!
This month's theme is 'Boom'. Pretty straightforward, anything that can make things explode in a spectacular fashion is eligible for entry, be it a Grot with a stick of dynamite to a Knight with its Inferno Cannon, from a Dwarf cannon to a Mage hurling fireballs.
How To Enter
- You may enter up to 5 MODELS as a SINGLE ENTRY, and are permitted one entry per member per month. If you enter multiple models, they should ideally be related in some way, such as part of the same squad, unit or scene if you are doing a diorama
- You MUST post a 'proof' picture of your entry in the thread of the state it was in before you started working on it; this must be either unassembled, unpainted, primed or coated a single colour. Entries that do not submit a valid Proof Picture will not be eligible for voting.
- After this, you may post WIP pictures in this thread and your own if you wish, and on completing the entry, you may post up to 6 final pictures IN THIS THREAD that will then be used for voting. Please note that pictures in a montage or collage picture will be considered individual images for this purpose, so while these types of presentation are certainly acceptable, please keep the image limit in mind when compiling them. For example, a collage of 4 images and two separate image would count as your 6 picture allowance.
Rules Change this month, the picture limit has been upped to 6 so folks entering 5 models can do individual and group shots of their entire entry.
All other rules still apply
So What Do I Win?
- Points... and points mean... bragging rights for the next month! Following the vote, points will be awarded to every entrant. This year, the Points you receive will be equal to the Percentage of Votes your entry receives in the final Voting thread; if you get 10%, you get 10 points, if you get 6% you get 6 points, so on and so forth.
These points will be used to form a league table, which will be updated month on month as the results come in.
How Long Do I Have?
This challenge begins 1st of May and will end at midnight GMT on the 31st of May. After this, I shall compile the finished entries into a new thread, and voting will run for 5 days.

Im really happy with the backpack, especially the weathering on the pipes.
hmm...guys, help me out...I'm trying to figure out a way to shoehorn this guy into "BOOM!"...any ideas? can it fit?
...I admit, I'm struggling to rationalise it...so if it just doesn't quite work, no problem, I'm still gonna paint it anyway (I've got a project blog going for it )...and I'll probably just wack out a couple of tankbustas or rokkit launcha deffkoptas or something towards the end of the month instead...easy come, easy go!

Just say he can blow up is nurgle after all they are walking biobombs that when shot explode in pus fountains.
So I'm looking around for things that go boom, and all I have are guardsmen and scout/assault marines.
Hold on, what's this? Is that an almost untouched Battle for Zycanthus box? Why yes it is. Expect some Tempest Elites soon.
well, righto, if there's no objections(?), then I'm going to enter this big boy...a Great Unclean One of Nurgle, converted from a Glottkin to have proper hands, holding a cleaver and a staff/standard, instead of the stock "big tentacle arm", and "mouth/cannon arm"
the fit to the theme is tenuous at best, but I guess, take your pick of the following
- "he's huge, so his footsteps probably make a bit of a boom"
- "this monster can deepstrike onto the battlefield, which would have to make some kind of boom"
- "he will probably be run as a level 3 psyker in 40k, and I imagine him slamming his staff into the ground, gandalf-style, when he casts a psychic power, making a booming shockwave of daemonic energy"
Wow, just one day in and not only are there some cool entries starting up, but someone has already FINISHED?! This should be a pretty fun month then.
I'm going to try to paint this Tau Hammerhead, complete with a tank ace who looks a little bit like Longstrike, but totally isn't him (Longstrike is with T'au sept, my Tau forces are from Ke'lshan sept). Here's my proof pic:
I'm probably going to use the lessons I learned while painting my Piranha a few months ago. The color scheme will be similar, anyways. I figure a Railgun should make a nice BOOM! when it is fired (and when the round hits an unfortunate Leman Russ downrange...).
I'll throw my hat in this month too, its rare I have a pending project that ties up with the themes but here's the Witch Queen (Formerly Phoenix Queen) for my Aelves midway through immolation.
ZoBo wrote: hmm...guys, help me out...I'm trying to figure out a way to shoehorn this guy into "BOOM!"...any ideas? can it fit?
You can steal the idea I was going to use to rationalize and entry... put a half covered landmine (from ork boyz sprue) just where his left foot will land when he takes a step.
Well, I'm in for this month, hopefully I'll be doing my Knight (Which you can see bits of in the background), but I need some things for it before I can really get stuck in. So, in the meantime I'll be entering these deathwatch heavies.
I'm going to attempt to get in on this month!
I present my proof of "The ascended plaguebearer" a nurgle Daemon prince with an oversized jump pack that I presume makes a really loud sonic "BOOM!" When he takes off!
A couple more angles to get a better idea of his pack and contribution to this month's theme!
Don't know if I'll be able to get him done this month but I'm about to go prime him up and at least attempt it.
Probably sit this one out. Nothing I can think of which is really..."BOOM" qualified for this month. The closest I'll come is an old kit-bashed Predator, but that's not very boomy.
Elbows wrote: Probably sit this one out. Nothing I can think of which is really..."BOOM" qualified for this month. The closest I'll come is an old kit-bashed Predator, but that's not very boomy.
Not Boomy?! It's a tank! It makes littler stuff go BOOM!
Well, that's my reasoning anyway lol
As for me, I've got this for BOOM (Proof):
Is gonna be a set of Tankbustas (using the lootas bits to convert some boys n such)
Now, THIS is gonna be EPIC! I'm definitely looking forward to how it turns out!
Actually is EPIC scale stuff ok to do?
(kidding!)
might as well throw away all your brushes I think Midget Gems' got this one tbh
I did a lot of the conversion for my guys this weekend - I really would like more rockets tbh but I don't have too many more sadly. They're all pretty loosely held together atm by blue tack as I hate trying to paint under arms.
My entry below is an old metal loota, he was a pain to strip with a paintjob I did on him when I was about 12... trust me, he looks better with no paint.
you may notice some tankbustas in the background too... I started them just before 'Boom' was suggested as a theme... darn...
It's now 1/3rd of the way through the month and all I have managed to do is greenstuff the gaps and change a few weapons.
Kinda hoping that all the 3rd party bits will scrape me a few extra votes at the end of the month. No idea how i'm going to paint the scopes.
PossumCraft wrote: Those currently looks so strangely like they're wearing denim that I'm looking for a levi's logo
It’s the multiple thin coats thing. The way I paint Ultras is two coats of the blue, then a blue glaze on top. So the first basecoat looks very blotchy.
Good thing last month was “primal”, not this one, otherwise I’d have to worry about jeanstealers.
Late to the party as I've been painting stuff for Warhammer Live (which you should all watch this Wednesday!). Here's my entry, sorry for yet another Deathwatch Marine, every single one I've done has been for one of these monthly contests lol
I'm also taking the opportinity to paint all of my fire warriors, drones, and trying to find the paint scheme for the kroot... Communist Space Fish for the win!
I'm trying to make a good job of it, since I think its a cool idea but we will see how it turns out
I like what you have done so far TotalitarianTiramisu, nice to see some models of that type. (nice name btw)
Good luck with the Warhammer Live stuff Bottle, really cool you are doing that.
Minor update. I did have this: but really wasn't happy with the way the body of the bomb turned out (also it had started to have a somewhat phallic look since the body was inside the tail and nose >_<
So I cut it out and found a PVA glue pen of roughly the right size so now it looks like this. which I'm much happier with.
Originally was going to do the marauders in the foreground, but lazied out, so doing the anti tank rifle carrying cat in the back. Too much detail, not enough motivation for the marauders.
Wip:
I was going to sit this one out, as I don't really think Predator when I think "Boom!", however this is finished, so I'll toss it in just to pad the thread!
Aaargh! Am I the only one praying for plastic Infinity models?
I think I've repaired my bloody mini seven times now...and I forgot to wash it first so the paint keeps chipping off...if their models weren't so sexy, I swear I'd just chuck 'em in the rubbish...
Anyhoo, I love the weathering on your predator Elbows' - great work.
Like everyone, I'm really looking forward to midgetgems' bombrider also...
Vejut's cat-guy looks really cool - what range is it from?
Where are the breaks occuring? Pinning infinity is a bit of a pain in some points, but shoulders and maybe heads are very doable, and really help. May also want to try some varnish over top. Plastic really isn't suited to what infinity does I think--having 5 of something is about as many as you go for, usually with different gear at that, and I doubt that really pays off your molds.
Crazy cat lady is a reaper Daughter of Sekhmet with the spear cut away and reposed, and a Warlord WW2 PTRD-41 added in to her hands. Been sitting on her for about two-three years now, primed and waiting for paint. Really hating past me on that because working around the gun is driving me nutty...
Elbows: Its up to you and Para, but I'd totally take that as "boom", from what the other tank does in fluff if nothing else
I've had surgery and a mountain of schoolwork dumped on me, I'm afraid I'm gonna have to pull out of this month and possibly the next one too, depending on the timing of the follow up surgery. And it my not be as BOOM! as some of the other entries, but I really like the pred Elbows.
Elbows, nice work on those Leman Rhinos. The bigger hatch is a design I sold to B&S, so seeing it in use is nice.. first time I've seen them used so far.
Sadly...one big issue is that you can't use two of them side-by-side. I ordered some more, and they won't sit flush when stuck on a Rhino in the front. It works fine with the stormbolter bit slotted in there.
Also, two of mine had small holes in them when they shipped, but nothing I couldn't fix! I like the design a good bit better aesthetically.
Also you'll note I have mine reversed to what most people would run - that's for clearance of the Predator's turret/gun...but I just imagine my tanks are built like Russian tanks where the turret hatch opens forward to provide additional protection to the tank commander, etc.
It was much better this month having something much smaller to paint, I've even been able to paint some other stuff, too...sorry for the shadowy photos...
...Despite the perils of crummy superglue and chipping paint, this guy is finished....BOOM!
I'll make an Archmagos Prime. Photon Thrusters make tanks go boom. Full disclosure, he's almost done right now, but I bought him two days ago, so I believe he counts for the challenge.
Yeah.. I'm seeing that on your Leman Rhinos... it wasn't really designed for Rhinos, but Chimeras and Russes more. I'm seeing the catches of putting it on the front mounts of a Rhino's hull.
Going to have to pull out also, too busy with non hobby mundane life stuff, which has to take priority.
Good luck to all who have not yet finished, and awesome work to those who have, real nice stuff as always.
Also now taking theme ideas for next month, I'll stick a subject poll up tomorrow. I'm thinking I'll try and throw in a couple loosely tied to the new 40k edition but that can be nice and generic as well. Something like 'new beginning' or 'a new age' ect.
I need to put together my own entry as well, come to think of it!
I had come up with some Star Trek-sounding theme ideas:
Energize: Entries should have some kind of energy theme, be it energy weapons or perhaps magical energy.
To Seek Out New Life And New Civilizations: Any kind of non-human would work, but perhaps humans with an exploratory theme would also be good.
Resistance is Futile: Not sure how the theme would be, but it sounds cool, right?
I still want to see Black and White as a theme one of these days. The other idea I had was "Warped" since it ties into 8th nicely but can be interpreted a number of ways. Of course if it wins, I'll have to get pretty creative in figuring out what to model/paint.
To the last... : Any kind of theme of ending/or last resort. A final stand, the last of a kind, etc.
Cold War...: Any kind of secretive, espionage based model - snipers, agents, assassins, intelligence officers, reconnaissance teams.
Trading Places...: Any model from one race/army/faction...remodeled/repurposed or kitbashed into another army's use. And not just an Orky stolen tank...I mean, kitbashing some Eldar into an Imperial Assassin or making a Tau crisis suit out of an Imperial cargo crate, lol.
won't be here much ot June so but seeing as how we have the pre-order for new40k date up and it's pre-release maybe a good theme, if not "new beginnings" might be
-New 40k New Army (totally stolen from Twitter)
-Git Off Mah Lawn (cuz you know some of us are *old*)
-Something Old (or) Something New (or) Something Blue
WIP getting there. Two of the bodies are done, the others need their second blue and wash. MLs are done, but all the arms needs their second blue/wash as well. Then just the basing. Should just be a couple more days.
Holy Crap! it’s the 24th? Where did the month go? Should be OK, but I need to stop screwing around and get painting. And by that I mean less Civ VI.
-The more things change: Paint a new version of an old miniature, or an old version of a new mini
(I have old metal eldar that need some paintin'...)
-Move, move, move!: In honor of the new "movement" stat, paint up something that has lots of it (or very little, hence the encouragement to get their lumbering asses moving...)
-It's all a game: objective markers, terrain pieces, distance rulers, all the "other stuff" that we use in this game and sometimes get neglected in our painting schedule...
Ok zobo enoughs enough. That thing is stupendously redonkulous. Jeez man thats one hell of a paint job. Shiuld have mine finished next 2 days as gots to go to warhammer fest arrrggghhhh i want that mans model. Good job everyone else but looks like we all showed up for nothing lol.
hey guys...I've just gotten some better pics, or rather, the exact same pics! ...only this time, instead of uploading straight from my phone to dakka...I uploaded them to my laptop, resized them in paint, uploaded to imgur, then uploaded to dakka from imgur, using dakka's auto-adjust...it seems to have done the trick ...hey Para, mind switching these over for me mate?
Sry I've no been around much, finding it hard to balance being away a lot more and painting, life etc.
Nice work Verviedi, a very cool looking model
The Glottkin/Great Unclean One came out brilliantly Zobo, loads of little bits to take in, (and make me feel unwell, like the slime from his belly to the floor) really like how you have done the bone and the finger nails.
You always get the blood stains and splatter to look spot on Para, nice work again
A WIP of my bits so far, hoping to have it finished this bank holiday
I'll be cutting it fine too. It's been a rollercoaster month. I started off very down on my own painting after the results and some comments last month which made me reevaluate whether or not I can paint at all. I thought it was okay, dammit!
I couldn't really find anything that fitted the theme, and committed to painting a dragon miniature for a friend of mine, but didn't think there was much chance of finishing it in time. I painted Jabba The Hutt as a way of trying to teach myself wet-blending in order to use the technique on the dragon, but I still can't think of a reasonable way to make him fit the theme. I started the dragon a week or so ago, still with my confidence really low, which was not a good frame of mind to be painting something for someone else. I've managed to put some time into it this week, so I might actually get it finished in time to enter if I pull my finger out. If so, I will enter it.
I have taken a proof picture last week, but I've mislaid the adapter that allows me to connect my phone to the PC so I haven't got round to uploading it yet.
Unfortunately, I've just got back from Warhammer Fest, and after viewing all the Golden Demon entries there, I've reevaluated my painting again and decided I might need to strip everything I've ever painted and start again. Some of that stuff is completely ridiculous!
Well i managed to not only finish 1 contemptor dreadnought for my sons of nocturne but 2. Man that feels good. Heres the proof of the second one and finished pics of both. The poor emperors children marine has a little suprise in his hand. Can anyone say 'BOOM'
The metal Mk I bike was a bit of a pain. Slightest knock and he came off the stand (about 3 times!) and he kept chipping so much. Gotta be so careful with those metal minis!
Anyway, here they are, 2 meltas and a plasma gun, ready to make your tank go BOOM!
Not sure about the pictures. Maybe I should switch back to my camera, where I can play with the white balance and ISO. These were taken on my Galaxy S7.

Thank you! Appreciation is always appreciated
Excellent concept with the nuke. I'm interested in seeing it finished.
I've got some of them, but don't know anything about them, never actually played infinity...anyway, I love those little dudes ...and they're basically infinity's analogue to 40k's bomb squigs, which I also love??...I knew crazy koalas were awesome!
Good work n1ceguypaul, you got them in different posses which is great and some nice battle damage/weather, I find the standard posse quite bland.
I like that you always do the little details Whittlsey e.g. the tiny writing on the bikers screen. The photos do have an Yellow/Orange ting to them (which might be your light source?)
Congrats on 5 uniform looking SMs SmallChanges, the gray face mask makes them stand out rather than just all blue, good choice.
Excellent concept with the nuke. I'm interested in seeing it finished.
No worries, credit where credit is due, and as if like magic here is my finished entry, as you requested. I'm away for the next few days to had to finish by this evening (again mostly done but would have done a few things more with more time). Good Luck everyone.
Hope you enjoy Dr. StrangeOrk or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb. Mushrooms are courtesy of Zobos, Thanks for sharing how to do them last month, I wanted to find an excuse to try them out
The Writing says
Nose Cone - "Hi There" (written on the bomb in the move)
Right side of Bomb - "Handle with Care"
Left side of Bomb - "Caution - May Contain Radiation"
Both Sides - OSAF - Orknited States Airforce
Underneath - "No Kill Like Overkill"
I think I did ok, considering I just painted up one of my conversions (not my best GS by a long shot, but ehh), but Im quite happy with the pics. They show off the painting better than my last few entries. Thanks again para for the setup help.
Drak'Kor Vash'na Incundraba, Chaos Chosen of Slaanesh
Bolter+bolter+dubstep goes boom, right?
I actually painted the whole model in the traditional gold and purple pre-heres scheme, before going crazy with about 6 different shades of pink and dark grey. So its realistic, atlas fluff-wise.
Slaanesh!
Im really happy with the backpack, especially the weathering on the pipes.
Apparently this guy forgets he has a chainsword often, and just smacks enemies over the head with his bolter.
So, entry done, pictures taken, and I realize looking at them...wow, that superglue really got everywhere around that foot when I mounted it to the base. Any way to correct for superglue frosting? First thought would be one more layer of satin varnish, as I did the two parts separately...
Thanks for the kind comments everyone, I'm just really glad you liked it
and Loot the Bomb?
Is perfect suggestion chaoticmind, thanks
EmberlordofFire8, that model looks like hes just come out of a lamp. The blood effects look good.
Vejut, I did a quick search and the common responses on the frosting are: paint over it, use water and rub it off (careful not to rub off the paint) or reseal it with varnish of some sort. The frosting is caused by fumes when the supergue is drying.
Well done everyone with their entries. I'm finding it hard to concentrate on painting at the moment with the summer here. To many chores to do outside! Anyone else sometimes find they start to lack patience with their painting? I had greater plans for this model but I lost patience...
I love your conversion Emberlord.. very clever =)
And your imagination and skill is as phenomenal as ever Midget.
Well, tried varnishing, it..kinda worked? straw colored mess around the heaviest stuff, but not so glaringly obvious. Dakka's gallery is having fun with the 6th image, so here are 5, I'll upload the 6th if it clears.
So, here's my (very late) proof. I'll start painting it later tonight.
Automatically Appended Next Post: Phew, that was a really intense painting session! I'm covered in paint and my arm hurts from all that frantic speed-painting, but I'm finished.
Not really, of course. I took that proof picture a couple of weeks ago, and have been working on it since. I'll post a couple of WIP pics I took along the way first. I learned how to wet blend to paint this miniature. I practiced by painting Jabba The Hutt, which I mentioned earlier in the thread when it didn't look like I could possibly finish the dragon, and he appears in the background of the WIP pics.
Spoiler:
Automatically Appended Next Post: The forum is going to mash this post into the other two, so sorry Para that you have to sort it out. The following pics are my Final Photos.
In at the last second! Well, technically half an hour after the last second, but Para hasn't put the voting thread up yet, so surely it counts.
I painted this dragon, who is actually called The Tyrant of Halpi, for a friend of mine. It was his son's birthday, and he wanted something cool to give him as a birthday present, so I offered to paint one of his board game miniatures for him. Of course he selected a foot-high dragon. The kid requested gold coins on the base (which I made myself by dicing a stick of modeling plastic like a cucumber, and a rune on one of the front teeth, which was a challenge. You can see it in the second pic. I think it's about half a milimeter high. You can barely see it with the naked eye. I tried to make it look like it's glowing blue but it's so small I'm not sure that worked. Anyway, I hope you guys like it, and more to the point I hope my friend's son likes it.
And I'm done! I've finished the Hammerhead. Here are my final photos:
This thing was loads of fun to paint, although it took probably twice as long as it should have (I really should be able to bash out something like this in a week, dammit! ). At least I finished it and it doesn't have to sit in painting limbo. Feel free to vote for these photos in the Dakka gallery!
P.S. The letters on the railgun spell Fury! I just had to throw that in!
Uff, barely made it. It was an extremely busy month. I managed to finish three of them.
My first Infinity minis. They are a small pain in the butt to assemble and paint cause
of the tiny details but the minis are gorgeous. I think they are the sharpest and most
detailed minis i've done.
Well, I didn't get time to base the little grotz (although I did manage to paint all 4) and I'm pretty pleased with how the lobbas turned out. Primaris space marines, meet Primary Grots! Red, Yellow, and Blue (You're my boy, blue!) Final pics (BOOOOOM!):
Didn't get his base finished or all the micro details done as I was laid off at the beginning of the month and have been looking for work and not had time to paint him, but I did get this much done and the base is still wet so I won't really be able to finish it in the allotted timeframe. Hope this is acceptable unless a mod wants to give me an extension through tomorrow, but I do not expect any special treatment so I will post these here now. Also obviously didn't have time to get him photographed, so apologies for the garbage photos.
