As we all know, metal is the greatest and purest form of music. I've been 'eadbanging for 30 years now, ever since I first heard One by Metallica. I've had religious experiences at both a Black Sabbath and a Judas Priest concert, and I lost my virginity to the tender sounds of Korn. When I was at my lowest, struggling with suicidal depression, I found solace in the naked emotion of Strapping Young Lad. My 14 year old son can be a real dumbass at times, but we can always agree that Ghost are both the dog's bollocks and the cat's arse.

I'm currently getting psyched for Max Cavalera to come to my little town and play Nailbomb's brutal masterpiece Point Blank.
I'm a big fan of Sepultura too, so this will be a treat.

Later in the spring grind/melodeath pioneers Carcass are touring. I saw them years back with Suffocation and 1349 and they KILLED.

In the fall I will finally get to see Finnish prog/folk/whathaveyou metallers Amorphis. I have been super into these guys ever since the metal gods saw fit to gift me a promo copy of their album Elegy.

One thing I know though, Europeans are spoiled when it comes to metal festivals. I'm super jealous.

That is awesome you are gonna get to see Max. Sepultura is amongst my favorite metal bands. Saw Cannibal Corpse at a small venue in my home town in South Texas when I was a teenager. Pantera after that, Phil Anselmo came out and downed a bag of shrooms, and by the time he got to Cemetary Gates he was pretty well incapable of doing much.

My go to has always been American punk rock though. I am sure there is gonna be a brit here saying there was no such thing, but damnit NOFX, Fugazi, and Sloppy Seconds are still where I get taken back to past memories of childish deviance fondly.

I've currently been listening to a lot of doom metal and hard stoner rock.

Things like Dopesmoker by Sleep, High on Fire, Fu Manchu, Electric Wizard (especially dopethrone. It's one of my favourite albums.) And many others.

Strapping young lad are pretty baller, as well as a lot of things that Devin Townsend has touched. Ziltoid is hilariously funny and heavy.

When I'm in the mood for variety, Ihsahn is pretty good considering he started out with the Black metal band emperor. And progressive metal, despite the giggles it gets. Bands like Myrath, Circus Maximus, Threshold and Dream Theater.

May the metal be pure forever!

But also accepting of change.

Yeah, Phil is troubling for me. I idolized him in high school, Far Beyond Driven is still one of my favorite albums. But he is such a colossal dbag, with his "joke" white power and sieg heil stuff, to sometimes showing up to the gig too messed up to perform. I have to say, I've seen Down live three times and each time he was in top form though.

I prefer american to brit punk, too. Apart for Never Mind the Bollocks, of course. NOFX, Op Ivy/ Rancid and Bad Religion were on heavy rotation, especially at parties. Chicks will put up with NOFX but not Naplam Death

Are those metal? I thought they were considered punk (and some of them leaned into ska for a few minutes too).

Best show moment: Blind Guardian (with Gravedigger opening), maybe 5' back from the stage, in a tiny venue in my tiny home town. It's probably the only tour shirt I'll ever have with Carrboro, NC on the back. And what a show it was...

There's few genres I don't like, as long as there's some idea behind it. Say brutal death metal - if it's just off-key riffs, drumming and growls it's not my thing, but if it's something like Nile with an idea behind it then wow!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=99KHIkENKBM

The classics are ofc always good, I'm not complaining if someone wants some Black Sabbath, Dio, Iron Maiden, Metallica or Gamma Ray. It's a good way to get more people into the scene where they can discover more exotic things. Finland is also full of bands, some claim we have the highest amount of metal bands per capita. Many of them are good too. Amorphis - a damn good band btw - was already mentioned. Stratovarius is a no-brainer if you like German-styled heavy metal.

So something else. You all know Nightwish, but maybe a few still don't know Marco Hietala was in a somewhat succesful band long before it along with his brother. Tarot:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xD1q21dr8tw

Or if people like folk metal stuff one of the first succesful ones was founded when two hungover guys worked it off by beating out some tunes. I give you Finntroll:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mkVwA__Fk9g

Or maybe something with heavy social commentary if you know Finnish? Timo Rautiainen & Trio Niskalaukaus might do.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IQ82fGZjUls

As for going full out psychedelic metal, try Oranssi Pazuzu (oranssi meaning orange as in color)....
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PNFGtm8rFaM

Of course, Sweden always put more money into supporting starting bands so they still outsell us. And to be fair many of their bands are also damn good!

Try some Hypocrisy if you haven't encountered it before:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eNlZJFcn4VM

And the same mastermind, Peter Tägtgren with his more synthesizer-heavy project called Pain:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=067YF8KHdTM

The issue isn't really what we call metal, it's finding time to check it all out and deciding which new band to listen to. There's a lot, and we need to sleep and work and have other hobbies...

edit: but we shouldn't forget the Norwegians. They've had bad history with "black metal", where a lot of idiots burned churches and some even committed murder to make themself more cred in the scene - but it also spawned some really majestic music. Satyricon wasn't involved in the crimes, and they have even been featured in national events like playing at sporting events and getting to play with the national opera choir!

One of my 5 year old daughter's favorite things to do is have me look up music on youtube. One of her favorites is the "zombie song", which would be Phantom of the Opera by Iron Maiden. She calls it that because of the picture of Eddie from the album which is the video image for the song. She's breezed through a bit of their catalogue and clocks in Fear of the Dark, Wicker Man, and Ryme of the Ancient Mariner as some of her favorites. She didn't think too highly of Morbid Angel, though.

Years ago my uncle heard me listening to Into the Void by Sabbath and turned me onto Lucifers Friend, a german band from the ‘70’s. I highly suggest anyone into metal, particularly Black Sabbath, check out their first, self-titled album. Especially the songs Toxic Shadows, Ride the Sky, and Everybodys Clown.

Both these records were on Banger.TV's 2017 best albums of the year. Pagan Altar are incredible.

Fun fact, I went to junior high with Sam Dunn. He was a couple years older than me, so my only interaction with him was being pushed up against the locker for daring to be an 8th grader in the same hall as the grade 10s

Metallica is the greatest band in the entire fething universe. Their first five records are among the very best metal has to offer. I also love Iron Maiden, Pantera, Megadeth, Anthrax, Testament, and Death. I've never really strayed too far from thrash metal, just never really got into the other genres as much.

Happy Metal Memory.

Around 20 years ago, mate and I were in the shopping centre (Mall, if your colonially inclined).

He was using the bogs, and I hung around outside. Spotted £20 on the floor. Picked it up, hung around for a while, just in case anyone came looking. They didn't.

Into the 2nd hand record store. Picked up a copy of Ace of Spades (album, not single) on Vinyl. Got it home, and found it also had a Killed By Death picture disc vinyl included!

Going to a Catholic school in Guelph it was really common to hear other kids insist they listened to Korn, or Slipknot, or Manson to prove they were tough. Most of them didn't but I think it left most of us with the impression that heavy metal (always referred to by its whole name) was noisy, dissonant, and generally unpleasant. I wasn't really musically aware as a kid, I'd been raised on a diet of Harry Chapin and the occasional Bon Jovi and as soon as my little sister could talk the house was all Spice Girls all the time.

Anyway, in 9th or 10th grade I was reading about the Silmarilion (LotR fever was in full effect) and stumbled upon a reference to Nightfall in Middle Earth, looked it up, and was overwhelmed. I can't stress enough how ignorant I felt, I'd written off this entire genre of music and here was this album; energizing, punchy, full of cohesive melodies and these massive harmonies, and it told a story! That last part was a big deal for me, again because I had been raised on Harry Chapin and appreciated the idea that you could have a 5-10 minute song that tells you about the tribulations of some guy who doesn't exist. I rode out high school listening to Blind Guardian, occasionally branching out on a song by song basis, mostly because I didn't know the terminology, download speeds were slow and I'd only occasionally luck out and find something good. (Disposable Heroes was a major highlight.)

I only really started to grasp that there was an entire genre out there when I started to branch out in College. I distinctly remember sharing Blind Guardian with someone (might have been Battlefield? I don't remember) and instead of clamming up like people would do in high school they sent me Nightwish.

I only got into Sabaton four or five years ago, I had heard Primo Victoria before and thought it was allright, but it was actually Carolus Rex that made me sit up and notice. Weirdly enough I was listening to another song of theirs while reading over the track list of Holy Diver, literally hearing 'the Rainbow in the Dark is shining' as I read the track name its referring to. It was like a sign. That got me into Dio, vicariously into Richie Blackmore, and some more modern bands like the Sword that try to maintain that kind of sound.

Rambling aside, I'm firmly in the power metal camp, though I occasionally sneak out over the wall to visit the symphonic metal camp. Nightwish' more recent stuff has been a little too nightwishy for me, and I haven't really jumped at Blind Guardian since Night at the Opera but I still go back to them. Sabaton still holds strong for me and Civil War is like this weird splinter off of that, but you can't mistake them for each other due to very different lead vocals. I rather like Epica because of their extremely over produced sound, rather than despite it.

Most recently I found Apex (the album) by Unleash the Archers, which was a great motivator to work on my Sylvaneth. (And let them take over my signature, apparently), and Dragonslayer by Dream Evil, which is another one of those albums everybody knows one song from, but is actually full of gems.

I think "as far from metal as you can get" is a wee bit of an exaggeration. In the video, Martin Popoff talks about the inclusion of Rush. Heavy metal in the 70s was a different beast, Judas Priest's Sad Wings of Destiny is a prog album. Rush is not metal by today's standards, but they are definitely proto-metal. Alex Lifeson is a bon fide guitar hero and he influenced countless shredders. Plus, Rush are amazing!

Bad Religion - do what you want was the creedo of my high school years. Come to think of it, how did I do so well in the Army lol.

Bad Religion is my all-time favorite band. I’ve seen them seven times (maybe eight... I’ve honestly lost count) and Greg Graffin once (he did an acoustic set as part of his most recent book tour). I also had the pleasure of meeting him and he’s a super nice guy. I also have a Bad Religion tattoo.

I don’t listen to as much metal as I used to. I went from punk to hardcore to metal to post-metal in my teens to early twenties. I still listen to some metal when the mood strikes, especially stoner/doom metal and heavy post-metal (Pelican, Isis, Alcest... that sort of thing). I still love Iron Maiden because as a once-bass player, Steve Harris is my musical idol.

If I had to pick, I’d say my favorite metal band is Kalmah; I’ve been really into them since Swamplord came out in 2000.

A band that I recently saw and quickly became a favorite of mine is Avatar. Their earlier stuff is not very notable, pretty generic really, but starting in 2012 with "Hail The Apocalypse" they really grew in quality.

Do you know who else is amazing and influenced generations of shredders? Pink Floyd, specifically David Gilmour. Still not metal. Not even by past standards.

You have to remember, Black Sabbath started it's existence in the very late 60's. That sets the bar for what is metal, since I think we can all agree that Sabbath is the first true metal band. Even something as raw and in your face as Working Man isn't on the same level as ANYTHING Sabbath did as far as heaviness goes. It's like calling King's X metal.

And to actually add to the OP, I've fallen in love with some of the more melodic "slow" metal bands out there now. Hurt. Tool. Breaking Benjamin. Stuff moves me more than Venom could ever hope to...

I enjoy metal quite a bit. I l tend to prefer power metal and folk metal with clean vocals and sci-fi/fantasy themes. More recently I've been listening to more doom metal and progressive metal. I've been enjoying High on Fire, Gojira and Oceans of Slumber.

I really like this cover of Solitude by Candlemass that Oceans of Slumber did, even though the lyrics are depressing:

I think my favorite live show has been Iron Maiden when they were at Ozzfest.

Spoiler:

Satyricon wasn't involved in the crimes, and they have even been featured in national events like playing at sporting events and getting to play with the national opera choir!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i5GhFL0OWq8

A lot of my favorite metal bands are from Finland, thanks for the links!

For those that enjoy Follk Metal, do give Hanggai a whirl.

It's a Chinese/Mongolian band. Some of there stuff is folky, some of it metally. Worth a listen at least!

Oh, and I also love Twisted Sister.

Anyone listen to Black Metal or Death Metal? In the past few months I've listened to over 300 Black Metal albums. There's no way I can remember each one, but a few favorites stuck out. I really like the melodic stuff such as Dissection and Sacramentum. I like melodic death, too. Dark Tranquility, At the Gates and Omnium Gatherum have been long time favorites.

I saw them live with Haken. Haken are a very good progressive metal band.

It was in the basement of Manchester university. There was literally about 50 of us there. Pretty brilliant.

I've been listening to Terror Universal a lot today - I saw them on my amazon music recommendations, thought I'd give it a shot, didn't expect much, but it's really, really good.

Got former members of il nino and machine head.

Best sounding band I've heard in a while.

Ded was also pretty good, found them a couple weeks ago.

Nice, I'll check them out. I was a big fan of Machine Head back in high school.

Machinae Supremacy. These guys are the soundtrack to my soul.

Greatest band in the universe. Robert is a poet. I got into them in the noughties, when they were unsigned, and basically just put all their stuff up for free, and there's hours worth there. Stuck with them ever since.

And there's no one else out there that sounds quite like them. Imagine slash on guitars and a Mega drive instead of keyboards.

Check out 'player one' (recorded when they were unsigned and zero budget, but still utterly epic), or 'rogue world asylum' (recorded ten years ago, but with the current political climate it is terrifyingly relevant). And listen to 'oki Kumas adventure', 'remnant' and 'the last march of the undead' - that song will break your hearts.

'Winter storm', 'kings of the scene' and the three 'sidology' song say give a great account of their signature sound.

Machine head has a new album out, now that you mention it. My favorite song was just called 'psychotic'. It's decent, though I honestly liked the sound of terror universal better.

In my school years, I enjoyed metal. but now I'm as an old man "make your noises quieter!" blublabla". I can not listen to disgusting husky growls. Only power metal with pure vocals or folk metal without satanic/paganic growlubbish. In general, I listen more to classic rock or new wave now.

Rivers of Nihil just put out a new album, and I quite like it. I have their first 2, and the third follows the thematic elements of the previous ones (their debut album's theme was Spring, Monarchy, their second represents summer, and this current one represents autumn) The third album went a little more "soft" in a way that reminds me of Gojira actually. . . But, it's pretty damn good.

Pretty soon I'll probably be placing an order at my local shop to more fully flesh out my collection. I'm thinking of getting Death's Human and Spiritual Healing albums.

I've also been enjoying the hell out of Watain's latest album, Trident Wolf Eclipse.

There's very little metal that I don't like. Usually, I steer well clear of Varg and Gaahl just as a rule.

See, this is why I love talking metal. I had not listened to Rivers of Nihil before and now Monarchy is crushing me right now! I do hear shades of Gojira in this. That's a good thing.

Solid list Death are gods.

Not content with inventing the Grindcore subgenre, English legends Carcass switched gears in 1993 and created the blueprint for every melodic death metal band to follow. This is one of the best metal albums ever.

After Carcass, guitarist Mike Amott would go on to form Arch Enemy. Most of Carcass reformed to tour with Suffocation and 1349 in 2007. I saw them in Vancouver and it was neck-breakingly good.

True story. We have a youtube loop we run through. The Zombie Song (Phantom of the Opera), the Mummy Zombie Song (Rime of the Ancient Mariner), the Space Zombie Song (Alexander the Great), the Devil Zombie Song (Hallowed Be Thy Name), and the Tree Zombie Song (Fear of the Dark). The last song in the rotation is The Wicker Man, and that one is the balloon song because of the video.
