Welcome to the 41st round of the Unofficial Painting Challenge! For the unfamiliar, this painting challenge is a friendly affair open to any Dakka members, whether you're winning Golden Demons or just painting Demons gold! The more you enter, the more points you accrue based on a public vote, and these are tracked in a League Table over the course of the year.
This month, the theme is Might Makes Right. In other words, time to bring out the biggest, toughest and meanest models from your to-do pile, the ones for whom sheer brute force and martial prowess is the only authority that matters. From a mighty Chaos Lord to an Orc Chief, from a Baneblade tank to a Bloodthirster, you want something that exudes threat and strength and can dominate any battlefield it's placed on.
How To Enter
- You may enter up to 5 MODELS as a SINGLE ENTRY, and are permitted one entry per member per month. If you enter multiple models, they should ideally be related in some way, such as part of the same squad, unit or scene if you are doing a diorama
- You MUST post a 'proof' picture of your entry in the thread of the state it was in before you started working on it; this must be either unassembled, unpainted, primed or coated a single colour. Entries that do not submit a valid Proof Picture will not be eligible for voting.
- After this, you may post WIP pictures in this thread and your own if you wish, and on completing the entry, you may post up to 6 final pictures IN THIS THREAD that will then be used for voting. Please note that pictures in a montage or collage picture will be considered individual images for this purpose, so while these types of presentation are certainly acceptable, please keep the image limit in mind when compiling them. For example, a collage of 5 images and one separate image would count as your 6 picture allowance.
So What Do I Win?
- Points... and points mean... bragging rights for the next month! Following the vote, points will be awarded to every entrant. This year, the Points you receive will be equal to the Percentage of Votes your entry receives in the final Voting thread; if you get 10%, you get 10 points, if you get 6% you get 6 points, so on and so forth.
These points will be used to form a league table, which will be updated month on month as the results come in.
How Long Do I Have?
This challenge begins 1st of Jujl and will end at midnight BST on the 31st of July. After this, I shall compile the finished entries into a new thread, and voting will run for 5 days.
Depending on how time goes this month, I might add a bonesinger little buddy, a/o a gravis captain to square off against in a mini diorama. As I’m on vacation for a week of this month, it’s unlikely to happen though. I’ll slap pics of them up if I do.
Hmm, not sure what to paint for this challenge. I have quite a few suitable minis but I'm not in the mood to do those. I guess I'll have
to make an extra effort.

Many of my entries for these challenges are an excuse to get things off the back of my workbench and onto the finished shelf. One of the many things I enjoy about participating.
(not this month, really looking forward to painting my WL)
Yeah, you're right. This is why these challenges are so awesome. Helps to motivate and give a nice painting push.
What a cool model is that wraithlord. I look forward to see it when it's done. Eldar and Tau are my favourite WH40k armies.
I so wanted cutting edge to win so I could paint my Tau commander. I don't think he fits might well.
So, a bit unsure about this one--its definitely a mighty weapon they're crewing, but might be stretching things a bit far. I do have other options if it doesn't fit.
allrighty then...I think I'm gonna have a shot at getting these two deffrolla battlewagons done...deffrollas are pretty mighty if you ask me
they're both jobbers I picked up on ebay...quite a while ago now actually...uh, that blue one, that'll be getting a full repaint, so don't worry about that...looks like the previous owner didn't even prime it
A fairly speedy entry from me this month as I've been holding off on this model for a week already, waiting for the challenge to begin. Finished him up this afternoon, and I'm fairly happy with the result.
Proof:
Final:
As I say, fairly pleased with it, though if anyone has any suggestions, I'm all ears as there's plenty of time to edit him a bit. I swapped the head out from the original as without the hair/beard, it got lost in the red armour. The SW head allowed me to have the bright area around the face to draw attention to it and the glowing eyes help there as well.
Believe it or not, this is also the first time in a good few years I've used a gold paint rather than just working with silver and washes! It certainly does make a difference, even if it's a bit of a pain to do (for some reason, Vallejo's silver is much more smooth than their gold?)
Would an Idoneth Deepkin Akhelian Allopex from AoS be okay? It might not be the biggest and toughest model, though it's a friggin flying shark, ready to grab an enormous bite (or two) out of it's enemies! But I won't argue of course, if people don't find it appropiate to this months theme, as it might be a bit far fetched.
This will be some good motivation to get some painting done before my group gets together in August. I'm going to try and finish my Forgefiend for this one.
I haven't even figured out what to paint yet and you're finished!?
I envy your speed...even more so because of the quality at the end of it!
I look forward to seeing that, Lord McAllister - I haven't painted or even seen that model yet, so I'm pretty excited...
CREEEED! Are you taking on multiple dreads? And Zobo multiple battlewagons? Looking forward to those as well.
Here is my entry, the Raging Heroes Avatar of Shaah, which I'll use as a keeper of secrets...
Spoilered for black primed nipples...
Spoiler:
So, how should I go about this, considering the nudity involved? Should I censor the images, or keeping is within spoiler tags enough? I don't want to have the whole thread labeled "NSFW" on behalf of my entry alone...
Is this a record for you Para? Lovely work as always.
Good on you for the Ebay re-homing Zobo, you are helping make the world a better place for neglected models.
I don't mind the nudity Chaosdad but whatever you feel comfortable posting up. (demon boobs are notoriously alluring)
I feel I have been holding back the last few months so want to push myself. I'm going to do a conversion for this entry and loot a Nemesis Dreadknight.
No idea if I'll finish but have to try. This is also an ebay rescue with crazy amounts of glue and missing bits, e.g. no hands, left arm, right foot.
Wooooh, Midget Gems conversions are back! Not that your regular entries aren't excellent, but your conversion work always takes it above and beyond.
I don't think it is a record actually, I'm fairly certain that one time I had an entry up and finished by about 2PM on the first afternoon of the month! Doesn't mean it was any good though!
To be fair, with this one the mini had been waiting on my desk for a few days so I already had the scheme/techniques I wanted mapped out and was fairly familiar with the model, that saved a bit of time in the planning stage. All in all, I think it was just over 2 hours from primed to done, not including the head or base which I did a bit later. There's really only 4 colours on there (red, gold, silver and the cloak) so it wasn't too involved.
@Midget Gems - ooh yes, that pile'o'gubbinz has my inner dethskullz bigmek drooling ...and yeah, I've always been a big fan of ebay rescue jobs...I owe a large percentage of my collection to ebay, and honestly, I've always felt it to be a very thematically orky way to build an army...lootin' assorted vehicles and hoards of gubbinz, and absorbing numerous smaller warbands from across the galaxy into your ever-growing Waaagh! ...my crew of big meks and spannaboyz, and painboyz always have plenty of work
Finished with the big guy. Went pretty quick, the two-tone paint job really helped there. Probably could have done him last month as well. Calling this final. Not really feeling the motivation to add to the entry, and could use the rest of the month for more unstructured projects.
Bonus Pic! For those of you who have been with us for the long haul, you might remember back to Aug of ’15, when we were painting “Rise of the Machines”. I painted a wraithlord for that competition as well. Model was a bit older...
The horse is mostly done. I will do a bit more dark lining on some spots I missed, but you get the general idea. I forgot to take a pic of the rider, so I'm gonna have to ask for forgivness on that one.
Some progress, I've been trying some wet blending on the blue-purple transitions, not quite happy with the result...
I am quite happy with the general look of the piece, though, but it's so big that there is a loooooot of opportunity for detail work. There are eyes and teeth on the arms, amongst other things...
Some quick finishers this month, nice work KD, Nev, Rybrook
Power elephant I really like how you have done the red armour on the horse and rider with surface highlights, it looks really good.
Your entry is looking great ChaosDad, really like the transitions from purple to blue.
I'm not evensure what that is LordRahl, some sort of nid? Looks pretty big and mighty to me.
Quick update from me, a bit of breaking superglue joints, some rearranging and plasticard work and I almost have a model ready to be painted
I might still need to make a new hand to hold the sword (model was missing lift arm, right foot and other bits.)
Late start (i've been holidaying) but count me in! What mightier, rightier display of force is there than the second company standard! If I finish quickly i'll work on the rest of the command squad and see how far I get.
That is some great shading, Powerelephant! The steed is looking especially awesome.
Incredible model there with some incredible painting, Chaosdad - I'm really looking forward to seeing that when it is finished.
Midgetgems - now that looks like a cool freaking model - that is an ork piloting, isn't it...awesome.
No idea what to paint this month. I'm renovating the house, so it'll have to be something pretty time-friendly...I'll have to put some more thought into it.
I think some highlights a/o a wash would help the bronzes out a lot. Right now it does look a little flat for something that takes up a lot of the mini.
So this month I submit not just a mighty warrior in his own right, but one who can bring to bear the might of the entire Imperium of Man at a whim; a Deathwatch Watch Master:
Thanks Chris, yep its an Ork, they can loot anything
Good luck SKR.HH, An imperial knight is also on my list to loot for my Orks
Rybrook wrote: Why do my pics come out funny when I upload,
funny how?
Well do for finishing power elephant and Jadenium, I like the details on his face. You guys are putting in overtime getting all these entries finished so quick.
That looks like its going to be pretty epic SlaveToDorkness
The one in the gallery is fuzzy and fluffy looking, it was taken with an SLR (on a tripod).
The second pic was taken on an iphone and attached, its clearer and better looking for some reason
I find my bridge camera’s autofocus struggles if I zoom in more than x2, given the low distance from camera to model. I have to crop the photos down in post, could it be something like that?
here's a quick WiP of my wagons...still a lot to do, but I've at least got the main bodies basecoated, and a bunch of accent panels blocked in...so, just a load of metal, various details and whatsits, and of course, a load of weathering...easy!

It might be to do with exposure length, if its a longer exposure time when you press the button it will blur? I put my photos on a 2 sec delay (just a guess btw no idea what your set up is)
In my excitement to finish up, I forgot to post my primed photo:
Ignore the models in the background! I can't afford the time to paint them yet. Plus, they are great for painting contests later. Haha.
The Captain for my Flesh Tearers successor chapter, the Angels Ferrugine. The theme is serendipitous because their motto is "Right makes might." Alas, they are a doomed chapter that has almost entirely succumbed to the Black Rage, kept going only by a penitent order of Mechanicus tech-priests that have vowed to find a cure for them.
I am going to throw my hat in the ring again. This time ill actually be done in time for it to count
I decided to start an AoS Army, Mostly its Sylvaneth but I am allying in one of those Akhelian Leviadon's. Because Ill only play the giant turtle in a game where Everqueen Alarielle is present i did a bit of bashing and combining them. She will be surfing on the turtles back, and the leviadon's crew will be upon her beetle bailey's back.
Captain Sidero
-Kitbashed from Stormcast Eternal Prosecutor, Skitarii, and various Blood Angels bits
-Right shoulder displays the chapter symbol of the Angels Ferrugine: a vermillion tear, trimmed in gold, with steel wings upon a field of rust
-Left shoulder displays Terminator Honours and a winged guard
-Wings were first wet blended sky blue to white, then the outer-facing edges given a brighter glaze
Upped my presentation game a bit. If you're going to slam, better slam in style. Background credit for first image goes to Tainted Lands by Dario Coelho.

Nice work. Could we get some more angles or close ups?
One thing about voting is that there are a lot of great entries. Who gets the final votes (I try to keep myself to around 5ish) can be rough. A lot of entries look really cool, have neat aspects etc. but only get one long-shot pic to judge them on. I look at those, think “nice mini, I’d like to see more, or how he pulled off that part swap” but I don’t get to. The next entry might deliver the detail, and get bumped up the vote list.
It doesn’t take an expensive camera. Good lighting an a something to brace it on goes a long way, even with phone cams. You don’t need expensive post-processing software. I know a number of us use a free program called PhotoScape to make collages and do minor tweaks. But we get multiple pics, might as well use them
I’d like to see a better pic of the marine’s body. With those wings, you can’t really focus on the marine himself without cropping.
I different angle without the SS blocking half the guy.
What do the wings look like from the back?
How is he leaping/connected to the base?
What do you think the best part of the mini is? let’s get a close zoom of that.

Added a collage of angles.
You were right. There are actually a lot of details obscured by the shield and wings. On the left shoulder, my Captain displays his Terminator honours. The scrollwork was done painstakingly in gold. The outer-facing edges of the wings are a different tint than the inner-facing shades. Taking pictures of this guy is tough because of all of the harsh shadows cast by the edges. That and because I have nothing buy a crappy Android camera and desk lamps for lightning. Thank goodness the base is magnetized at least; off-camera, I am stacking cookware to get this guy elevated.
Thanks for the PhotoScape recommendation. I used it to make the collage.
ssisal - I love that you have a giant turtle as part of your entry. (the Turtle moves!)
Suzuteo - Nice work, the model is a good combination of parts. Really glad you added those extra pics. Photographing miniatures is in art all in itself.
I'm looking forward to another interesting conversion from you KernelTerror
DrGiggles, Dwro1234, craggy, SmallChanges good solid entries and/or progress so far. Keep going
Thank you very much Midget Gems !
I was able to do quite a lot of progress over the weekend, both of the knight's weapons can be called finished, modulo some touchups here and there...
Paradigm wrote: Done. I tend to do 3-4 big updates a month now rather than adding entries as they pop up, so don't panic if you don't show up for a few days!
Thanks Para, didn’t mean to nag. I really appreciate the time you take out to organise all of this.
Hey guys! Tuning in with a WIP. Finished the banner of my standard bearer so i've just started moving onto the marine himself with the details. Hope everyone's coming along okay!
My beastmen conversion. I wanted the horns pointing forward like a normal bull, so I used a pair from a chaos warrior. Also added some hair to conceal the part where the old hornes were. Created a new axe. Lastly, gave him an "open" hand pointing at some enemy like he's about to say "you're next!"
Just need to come up with an appropriate base.
So, probably bit off more than I can chew this month, starting to burn out a bit, so even lower quality paintjobs and blending than usual this month. Gun is mostly ready as its going to be, and just needs a base (glued the gunner on after the pic), crew is really lagging.

Here's my proof pic. I'm going to try to paint the mightiest of the trees - the Spirit of Durthu.
It's going to be difficult as I am going away before the end of the month, and don't appear to have any days off between now and then. This could be the first month since I first entered that I miss the deadline, but I hope not.

Cheers. Good luck everyone.
Don't let the competition daunt you, let them inspire. I know I’m never going to win, or even get a podium finish, but i enter all of them anyway. From a hobby motivation POV, i find it helps me paint different things I might not normally do to push my boundaries, and get feedback to improve.

too late now any way iv started posting pics on the ohter thread, next time though.
All done. Meet Grand Master Mordo, of the Grey Knights. He's firmly of the opinion that there are too many sorcerers in the galaxy, and takes great delight in purging them.
Hello i was introduced to dakkadakka by my bf and i would like to take part in the painting competition.
I painted a custom hellbrute that my bf made for me using contents of our bits box and greenstuff (long time users may remember him as Mad_eddy_13)
I'll get some better photos once the model is finished, many apologies for the lousy phone camera...
@Midget Gems - loooove it!...looks great already, can't wait to see it finished!
@Chris56 - haha...yeahhh...I was almost going to enter with this at the start of the month, kinda kickin' myself about that now ...I should still be able to get him done in time though...just...hopefully
I'm most likely not going to finish my mini in time. :-/ The current heat is killing me as well as my painting. The paint just dries out much too quick especially when detailing with just a bit of paint on the tip of the brush. Around 36°C (97°F) is just not a fun temperatur for painting, especially with no AC (as AC in homes is absolutly not a common thing around here... I don't know of any private person owning one). o_O
Painted his skin using Vince Venturella´s drybrushing technique (hobby cheating) combined with the Army Painter Strong Tone. Turned out a little darker than expected, maybe I should've drybrushed him a little heavier. Anyway, I don't know what to do with the underside of the open hand. Vince's "zenethial drybrushing" says you should only brush downwards, but that way the underside of the hand remains black. How should I paint that?
Rybrook wrote: Possibly turn the palm 90 degrees then dry brush it
But, if you´re serious (my fault, I'm having trouble judging intentions via text): I can drybrush it in this position too by just turning the model, but I'm looking for the proper way (light physics) to make it look natural. Should some parts be highlighted, if so what parts, how much etc.

In terms of the way light would interact with the model, I think you've already got the answer on your model. If you look at the second picture, you've got some very light dry-brushed colour on the underside of the right arm, but it's much more subtle than the drybrushing on top of the opposite limb. If you can imitate that, keep it really subtle and towards the end of the fingers, you may get the look you're after.
ZoBo - I see I'm not alone in my surprise at you switching to such a large model. I have faith that you'll make it look amazing though!
J.creeper - Nice hellbrute. Looks like a good start to a late entry, and I'm looking forwards to seeing more.
DrGiggles - Plasma without an airbrush is perfectly possible, though how to get there depends on what sort of effect you're after. If you use much thinner (in fact semi-transparent) paints than usual, and spend the time layering them up, you can get a very smooth if laborious transition. If that's not for you, you can 'trick the eyes' on small miniatures using fairly normal technique, but starting with a lighter base tone than usual and highlighting up to a white finish (or even very careful and controlled drybrushing, which can give a sort of OSL appearance with some practice).
Midget Gems - It looks awesome and pretty nearly finished to me, so I'm sure you'll finish in good time!
I'm gonna have to bow out, there's no way I'm finishing this unless I stay up all night, and I've got a flight to catch at 8:30 tomorrow morning. Best of luck to those of you who will be, like I usually am, finishing on the last day.
Here are my final pics. This is quite early for me to be finished, but the truth is I'm going away to my parents for a week tomorrow so it's still very much last minute as usual!
Quite an enjoyable paintjob to do, not least because over the last couple of months I had decided (in order try to clear some of my backlog) to paint 100 miniatures before I allowed myself to buy anything else, and immediately embarked on 25 Dark Angels marines and 21 Star Wars Legion Stormtroopers. This got boring quickly. I finished 10 marines before deciding "screw it" and buying the Soul Wars box and switching back to painting stuff I wanted to paint rather than stuff I (wrongly, as it turned out) thought I could paint quickly. It's also the reason I chose something small and simple last month, as I know how to paint Super Dungeon Explore stuff in a simple but fun anime style. Overall, the 100 miniatures thing was a stupid idea. Never turn your hobby into a chore.
Durthu also has the bonus that I will actually use him on the table. He's a terrifying whirlwind of death in my Sylvaneth army, an army that usually loses to n1ceguypaul's ghosts or Stormcasts. He's responsible for most of the moral victories I achieve in the course of my defeats.
Great job as always, felt - Durthu looks awesome. The contrast of tones in the bark and orange transitions really make him pop.
Also loving the rust and weathering, Midgetgems - we must have posted at the same time last comment, 'cos he wasn't there before!
I know how you feel, CREED. Hope you have a good trip.
Anyhow, I am probably going to enter an ork as well. An orruk brute to be precise - I will post a proof pic later today. I'm going to have to just ignore everyone to get in some painting done! My very first entry ever was from the same box set and I didn't get him finished in time - I hope that is not a bad omen...
Finally, near the end of the month, my entry is finished. Here are my final pics of my Dark Angels Primaris Repulsor:
This model was an absolute blast to get painted. It is truly one of my favorite Space Marine models of all time, and to me, just screams "Mighty" for the theme this month. Feel free to vote for these pics in the Dakka Gallery even if you don't vote for it in the actual challenge voting thread. Looking forward to seeing what everyone else comes up with, too!
Blimey, we've got some exciting last-minute entries coming in here!
ZoBo, that's disgusting (I mean that of course in the nicest possible way!.
Felt, that's just lovely use of colour and hue, topping even your last big tree fella. You really have a knack for taking what would otherwise be quite monotone models and really giving them some pop!
I am done too! Razgor the Warbringer painted like my Goliath character in DnD.
Lots of drybrush on this one. Im happy with how he turned out although I do see a few little mistakes now on the photos. And those moldlines really show.... Lesson learned. I should spend a little more time in the preparation of my models so they look better when painted.
Also Im not sure i like the sword... Its kinda plain but i dont know what to do... maybe some rust or blood will do.
Hi!
This is my first entry for this glorious competition. Although some of the entries that some of you have posted are quite intimidating, I love this kind of competition. Having a clear deadline really helps me getting things done.
I'm currently on vacation in Scotland, so I'm extra happy that I was able to finish my tank.
Pretty sure i can get the bases done today.. otherwise they are finished in my mind.. either way will submit something by the end of day tomorrow. Im happy with how they look.. and the guy ill be playing mostly against is kinda intimidated by them..
@feltmonkey: Your Durthu looks awesome! I'd never have thought, that brown and blue works so well together! And the orange highlights are really making the mini stand out without being too intense. Great choice of colours!
@Rouven: I love your tank! It's such a great paintjob!
Here he is...the photos are rubbish but all of my gear is in storage while we renovate the house. If I can, I'll try to get some better ones if I have time tomorrow...
Wasn't able to finish the full squad of 5 as I'd hoped, but at least I have something to enter. I don't know that some humble Terminators can stand up to these incredible entries this month, but here they are!
Wow what a great page of entries, some really cool pieces.
Thanks Chris yeah I noticed we posted at very similar times last post
Impressed you got the model done in a day thats almost para speed! Lovely NMM on the sword
Well Zobo you sure know how to disturb us, you really do get the decaying flesh spot on and the toe nails
Your first entry is awesome Rouven, I have a feeling you will be getting a lot of votes for it
Great work on getting 3 done Porphyrius, they look good as a squad.
My Final Pics for the looted Dreadknight, think he turned out OK, made a few mistakes but it was nice to do a proper conversion again
Congrats to everyone that finished but this guy isn't going to be finished in time.
Took way longer than i thought getting it prepped and assembled and there was way too much detail left to get finished in time. But i'm pleased with how its progressing so hopefully it will be ready for a family photo soon.
sorry bout the pic quality not used to the kindle for taking them... and its 0333 here on the first... but somewhere is still the 31st so im posting. very much happiness over how they both turned out... alerielle ended being a coaster for one of my sister's friends who is never allowed back over here.. had to reglue her wings and arms tonight. discovered that gw cididal glue sucks for gluing.. ended up using thecheepo dollorstore stuff after gw started to melt the plastic instead of bonding it.
I will try and take daylight photos if it dun rain all day long today. ive finished the old projects I started for these contests last year.. just never posted as missed deadlines..
