I am brand new to the hobby, building and painting my very first SC box for AdMech. And even though I’ve yet to even play a full game I can’t help but look at other armies and think of eventually building and playing one. Don’t get me wrong, I love the choice I made and if I went back in time would choose AdMech again. Models look great, lore is cool, seems to be a moderately powerful faction when used right. I just can’t help but see other armies and think that they are also cool and might one day down the line start building a new army.
So my question to the group is: how many armies do you have?

Dark Angels
Chaos Space Marines
Space Marines
What I want in addition to these is most of the other armies.
None of the above are complete, most barely/partially painted.
It's an addiction...

What you have is called “Shiny Model Syndrome” and is very common.
I have one main army (Ultramarines), a long suffering secondary army (Eldar) and recently-ish started a tertiary army (Deathwatch).
I’ve got a few AoS ones as well, but lets not talk about them.
I frequently hear the sirens call to other armies, but I stay the corse. Not enough money or time to branch out too far afield.
Armies are never finished, but at some point you plateau. You don’t “need” anything else, even if there is more stuff you could use. It’s OK to move on to other projects then (that’s why I started Deathwatch). It’s also good to have a secondary army to prevent burnout. I paint a lot of blue power armor and boxy tanks. It’s nice to paint something sleek and red to help break up the monotony. Keeps things fresh and interesting. Secondary armies help fill that role on the tabletop as well. Give you a chance to play a different style army.
Ot, in this world of soup lists, branching out will give you more diversity on the paintbench and more power on the table. Win/win.

Aha yeah this is common.
I have Death Guard, Orks, Space Wolves and genestealer cults. And that's only 40k stuff.
Just make sure you finish one before starting another. You'll end up with mountains of unused plastic.
Also, kill team is your friend. You can sample all armies that way.

Hey Chessonator, welcome ro Charlotte, you should swing by Games Workshop sometime, I’ll be there this afternoon playing my Deathguard against some Blood Angels.
To answer your question, I have about 1500 points of Dark Angels and 1500 points of Death Guard painted up. I personally only play with painted models, but have no problem playing against unpainted models
If I build a 3rd army, it will probably be Age of Sigmar

The ideal number of armies is typically one more than you already have.
Kill Team offers a good alternative to full armies.

four thousand points or more worth of:
Dark Eldar
Craftworld
Space Wolves (before they were ruined by flander model bloat)
Dark Angels (see above)
Ultramarines
Guard (Shadowsword and Baneblade)
Tryanids
Necrons
Tau
Sisters of Battle
Orks ( 3 Stompas)
Loads and bits and pieces or smaller forces for other armies like Ad Mech including 5 Knights, Rigue Traders, inqusitors, Black Templars, Harlequins, Chaos,
Does not count unpainted / unmade for which you can add a few thousand more models of various sizes and afiliations.
Or Age of Sigmar - (similar) or other ranges.....

@Freeflow: probably won’t be able to make it around today, also the hobbyist in me wants to have my dudes all painted up and pretty before I take them for a spin. However I think that’ll change soon when I want to get a game or 10 under my belt.
I like the term “Shiny Model Syndrome,” and I think it’s fitting. Once bit by the hobby-wargaming bug it’s hard to look at any army and not want to play a game with them to see what it’s like.

I have Salamanders and Biel-Tan as my 'main' armies, and a small force of Deathwatch that aren't quite a full army on their own but soup nicely with the Salamanders.
I also have a couple of Imperial Knights, all the Primaris and Death Guard from Dark Imperium and the Primaris half of Wake the Dead, all unbuilt. So those will be extra armies as and when I actually build and paint them (I don't like mixing oldmarines and Primaris together, so my Salamanders will remain oldmarines only, and I'll pick a different chapter for the Primaris).
I also have High Elves, Lizardmen and Orcs & Goblins for WHFB (never done any Sigmar), and a Plague Fleet for BFG.
Us old timers with mountains of unbuilt and/or unpainted plastic will always say that you shouldn't buy things faster than you can build and paint them otherwise you end up with a huge pile of shame - and we say that from experience. It's a lot easier to say that than it is to do though. Buying new models is much faster than painting them and it's very easy to give in when you see something shiny that you like.

I have 1.5 40k armies (Black Legion and Fallen Dark Angels). Most my collection can be seen in the links in my signature blocks. I say 1.5 because the Fallen are more reinforcement options than an actual army. I do have a lot of Kill Teams though. In addition to the ones in my signature block, I have Tau, Genestealer Cult and Thousand Sons.
I agree Moriarty about Kill Team and that is what I have done. Almost every faction has a kill team that can be bought for $60 US or less. Two troop boxes, most of the time, gives you more than enough models for Kill Team's 100 standard point limit usually with plenty of options to swap out depending on your opponent.

Oh, a few....
All forces - save the Orks, Ad-Mech, & knights - are built & painted to at least 2k pts.
Bear in mind that I've been building armies since '92. And my Imperial Guard ( IG) have not gotten the memo that they've been re-named Astra Militarum....
1) SM: Ultra-Marines (9th co. to be exact, all models RT era vintage)
2) SM: Mentor Legion
3) SM: Doom Eagles (sometimes played using BA rules, sometimes not)
4) SM: Dreadnoughts
5) SM 1st Co./Deathwing - all termies & land raiders
6) Dark Angels
7) Space Wolves - my original 40k army
8) Sisters of Battle
9) Adeptus Arbites - yes, I know, not a current army. But they had a Citadel Journal list when I built them in early 3e.
10) Super Heavy #1: Titans (loyal) - home to several Armorcast Warhounds, Reavers, & 1 FW Warhound
11) Super Heavy #2: IG tanks - home to multiple Baneblades/Shadowswords/etc
12) IG: Armored Column - I actually have enough that I could split this further - all Russ/assorted tanks & all artillery (basilisks/griffons/etc) - & still be at 2k.
13) IG: Arcadians ( RT era - I took the name from the banner pictured on their plastics box)
14) IG: Cadians (2e metal)
15) IG: Tallarn
16) IG: Vallhallen
17) IG: Catachan (2e metal)
18) IG: Mordian
19) IG: Praetorian
20) IG: Steel Legion
21) IG: Penal Legion/ ab-human - the home of Necromunda gangs, ogryns, beastmen, etc
22) IG: Cadians (the plastic version)
23) IG: Vostryan
24) Imperial Navy/flyers - Home to my Thunderbolts & Lightnings
25) Squats
26) Tau
27) Necrons
28) Eldar (mostly Iyanden based)
29) Orks - a very slow project. I can only get about 1k pts onto the table
30) CSM: General - the catchall for chaos stuff that doesn't fit another chaos force
31) CSM: Iron warriors
32) Chaos: Death Guard
33) Chaos: Khorne demons
34) Genestealer Cult - originally built way back in 2e alongside my Arbites, but soon to get a major upgrade!
35) Tyranids: 100% genestealers
36) Tyranids: Vintage - my RT & 2e stuff
37) Tyranids: not-as-vintage - my 3e-5e stuff
38) Tyranids: All flyers
39) Tyranids: All monsters creatures - carnifex+
40) Tyranids: All Forge World models
41*) Ad-Mech
42*) Super Heavy #3: Imperial Knights
* These are in the process of being built. It started as me finally seeing an Ad-Mech force on the table back in Dec. & saying "Those are cool, I'll build those guys in 2019." So a bit of scouring EBay for deals, a great deal on a box of Forgebane at the local shop, + combining my random Knight Paladin I built just as a model back in 6/7e when I wasn't playing.... Then I thought "well, if I add another knight, + a box of Hellverins...." And some more sifting for the cheapest deals.... And know I have 2k of stand alone Ad-Mech + a stand alone Knight detachment.
So 42 armies at present. 43 if I split the IG armored column into tanks & artillery. Maybe 44 if I were to scrounge up all the misc marines left over/acquired over the years & projects?
Eventualy, someday, I'll add Elysians/Krieg/the 30k Solar Militarum (or whatever they're called) & whatever the Dark elder are called now.
So 47 projected with a few slots to go until I can do an army a week.
*As this was obviously a 40K question, I did not include WHFB/AoS, Flames of War, Bolt Action, BattleTech, Blood & Plunder, or X-Wing.

I have quite a few armies now. (I can't bring myself to sell stuff)
I started again in around 1999 after a break of around 8yrs of the hobby & have collected in the last 20yrs all are above 2k some are around 10k To my shame around 30% is painted. I seem to buy more than I can paint every year. The new shiny syndrome always gets me along with being a bit ocd & wanting to own every model for an army I start.
40k
Eldar
Dark Eldar
Iron Warriors
Space Wolves
Necrons
Chaos Daemons
Death Guard
Imperial Knights
Orks
AOS
Stormcast Eternals
Blades of Khorne
Kharadron Overlords
Idoneth Deepkin
Maggotkin of Nurgle
Disciples of Tzeentch
Nighthaunt
Legions of Nagash

Craftworlds - Main: close to 9000 points. Have been collecting since 1999
Drukhari - Secondary: around 6000-7000 points
Dark Angels - First army I ever bought. Somehow have 10k of it.
Tyranids - 3000 points. My current army I am working on.
Necrons - 3000 points
Small Emperor's Children army for 30k and 40k
Daughters of Khaine - 1500 points
Stormcast - 2000 points
Blades of Khorne - 2500 points
Also have a small Ork force I haven't touched in ages. Also bits and bobs from ton of other stuff. Some Steel Legion models, some High Elves, Free Folks, Greenskinz, etc.
With the new rule of 3 in 40k it has become easier to maximize an army as you are limited on how much you can bring of each in many cases. I like it.

Armies:
40K:
Craftworld Eldar
Imperial Guard
Sisters of Battle
Space Marines (Ultramarines)
Space Marines (Lamentors)
Space Marines (Deathwatch, painted as Blood Ravens)
Warhammer Fantasy:
High Elves
Dark Elves
Empire
Orks and Goblins
Kill Teams (different from the above)
Imperial Guard
Admech
Most of them are small, 2K or under for 40K, with Eldar and Sisters being my largest. I have a bad habit of switching from project to project, so I don't complete armies quickly.
My Fantasy armies are larger, with the average being closer to 3K, and with nearly 7K in High Elves.
This is also not counting the other games I play.

Current GW Armies:
None
Past GW Armies:
Tau
Chaos Marines
Black Templar
Necrons
WMH:
Mercenaries
Skorne
Protectorate Battlebox
Firestorm: Directorate
Dropzone: Shaltari
And a bunch of Battletech figures which are not specifically tied to any one faction until they are painted.
I never did get in to Warhammer Fantasy because I could never decide on an army. I liked Beastmen, Tomb Kings, Bretonnians, and Wood Elves (Lizardmen, too, but there were always too many of them), but I could never bite the bullet on any. I've had Fantasy models purchased to use in 40K at times as well as Age of Reckoning's CE Ork general. At least the selection in Age of Sigmar is a little easier to select from these days.

Smaller armies are easier to collect, build, paint, transport and store. Variety of things looks better and is more fun to collect, build, paint and play. Over the past few years, I have made some effort to sell off those things that I could quickly convert into cash, and more recently, I have made a big push to reduce my backlog. That said, if I had never bought the excess stuff, and only focused on those few armies, I'd be much happier with the whole thing.

Ally two of the armies together. Of my "big three", I would ally my Eldar and IG for an Apocalypse army.
Or, find a friend, which makes Apocalypse battles even better.
Best is to play 5,000 pts per side 3v3

Orks, Dark Angels, Death Guard, Space Marines (own chapter) and Guard all 1k+
Inquisition, PDF, Deathwatch, Black Legion, Space Marines (unpainted) and Sisters of Battle all around 500 points
AdMech and genestealer cult still on the sprue, along with an increasing number of Primaris (that I have no plans for...) from a magazine subscription
If/when there is a proper rogue trader codex (or more likely Imperium ( misc others)) I will be adding that, I also have a few tau, elder, necron and tyranid, mostly metals, not fitting in with the other armies.
So 10 built and painted (and growing), 1 built, but not painted and 3 unbuilt.
I'm beginning to like the idea of kill team, so each could be divided down further... Even create 'specials', like Nurgle Genestealer Cult kill team
EDIT
Forgot my Harlequins
Also just picked up Blackstone fortress... Won some Sisters of Silence on an auction site, along with also winning Elucia Vhane

Tyranids have always been my "Main" army all the way back to 2nd ED.
In the past I have had nearly every army there was.
Currently I have 3 main armies (All related)
Tyranids: (Hive fleet Psythe) I've had this "fleet" since 2nd :-) Though the models have changed vastly.
Genestealer Cult: I've had these since thet rereleased them in 7th ED (They actually "Saved" me from leaveing the game at the time I was a few weeks from selling everything and then GSC was released and they sucked me back in much to my delight.)
AM/Guard: My Brood Brothers for my Cult lead by Col Crazy-eyes. A company commander I got from a good friend who sold his army to me and had the Col since he started and I kept his signature character in his honor.

Like you, even though I just started playing again 6 months ago or so, I'm always tempted to start a new army with a theme I cn't do with my Orks. As it stands I only have Orks however and I plan to get to at least 4000 points of them before getting another army.
Luckily for me Orks (and my friends Nids) have so many decent lists 4000 points should give me plenty of ways to play the game. Walkers, Greentide, Mechanized, all fun for me and perfectly viable in our more laid back local meta.

I have about 3500 points of CSMs in various stages of paintedness, and I'm working on a Drukhari army that I've probably got about 1000 points of so far. Been playing since the start of 6th ed.
Honestly, at the moment, I'm pretty happy with them and not looking too enviously at any other factions. Current goal is to get the Drukhari up to about 1500 - 2000 points, and then we'll see.
My regular opponent though, has probably been through about a dozen armies in the same space of time...

Once upon a time I had one and many (just about every imperial faction), now only one; as they all got lost when I moved continents.
At the end of 2E, I had approx. 15K points of imperial stuff, Space Marines, IG, SoB, plus various Imperial Agents and Arbites.
Now I have started my rebuild of IG, but its very slow as I don't have much time to paint, and unlike most hobbyists I don't buy anything till I'm finished painting what I already have.

Does Chaos count as a single army? I’ve got 3-4K points of EACH of the gods’ daemonic servants. So...between 12-16K of Daemons. Then I have a small pile of Space Marines, mix of 30K style and Black Templars.
The Daemons combo with AoS, but I also have mortals for that; so a big Chaos army there too.

Space Wolves
I also have kill teams of Drew Carey and Harlequins.
I tend to focus on infantry and dreadnoughts so I still need some armor for my Imperium armies.
I also plan on buying the new Sisters of Battle when they are released. I had a sizable metal army about 10 years ago but sold it to pay rent.

Nids
D Eldar
Craftworlds
Astra Militarum (inc Tempestus)
Grey Knights
Death Guard
CSM
SM (probably not got 5k worth but a substantial detachment)
Some knights (again maybe not 5k worth but I've got 5 knights, 4 warglaives)

My main "army" is a tiny force of T'au. Actual armies would be Germany and America, with some USSR; but that's in a different game.

Welcome to the club.
As mentioned, it's perfectly normal to develop 'shinny model syndrome' and it seems like you may be seeking validation for your desire to start other armies.
Well... We're enablers here so sally forth and buy it all.
I think everyone's post here should start with #HumbleBrag. Anyway... I have (though I only play AdMech at the moment):
-AdMech
-Astra Militarum
-Blood Angels
-Craftworld Eldar
-Dark Angels
-Death Guard
-Grey Knights
-Imperial Knights
-Orks
-Space Marines (My own chapter)
-Space Wolves
-Tyranids
-Ultramarines

And even though I’ve yet to even play a full game I can’t help but look at other armies and think of eventually building and playing one. Don’t get me wrong, I love the choice I made and if I went back in time would choose AdMech again. Models look great, lore is cool, seems to be a moderately powerful faction when used right. I just can’t help but see other armies and think that they are also cool and might one day down the line start building a new army.
So my question to the group is: how many armies do you have?
I own 11 distinct forces. All of them are far too large to justify.

~4000+ points of almost fully painted Guard
- most Guardsmen have headswaps or are converted, line infantry has longcoats made of GS
- most vehicles are converted, mostly based on German WW2 stuff
~1000 points of AdMech, 60% painted.
- Some are converted
Had about 850 points of Sisters, that I'm currently giving away.
Planning to get Ork killteam
Maybe tiny force of Eldar exodites, possibly made of Wood Elves

What I have:
Dark Angels (no Primaris; I still have about 1000EUR to spend before I finish this project)
What I really want:
Salamanders (Primaris only)Genestealer Cults
What I also kind of want:
Khornate Blood Angels (World Eaters)Word BearersThousand SonsMixed Inquisition/Assassins/Scions/Sisters/Grey Knights/DeathwatchCombined Ad Mech/Imperial KnightsTyrannids (Swarms of Hormagaunts)Orks (Hordes of Boys)Necrons (Masses of Warriors)Tau (Horrible static gun lines & Kroot!)Dark Eldar
What I don't really want at all:
Imperial Guard (most of the range looks too dated to me)Eldar (same problem as guard)Space Wolves & Deathguard (just never liked the aesthetic)Everything else I haven't mentioned.

As nearly everyone else has mentioned, it is quite normal to have and want multiple armies.
For me part of the hobby is collecting, building and painting and I really struggle to part with anything that I've put lots of time into.
I have the following:
Blood Angels/Space Marines - Huge force.
Imperial Guard - Large
Chaos Daemons - Very Large
Chaos Marines - Large
Admech - Medium
Deathguard - Medium
Deathwatch - Medium
Imperial Knights - Small
Inquisition - Medium
Custodes - Small
Sisters of Battle - Tiny
Sisters of Silence - Tiny
Assassins - Tiny
Plus various single models from a variety of factions.
I consider a 2-3K force a medium collection.

Been playing for around 20 years, only have two armies. Guard and Necrons. Guard is almost 12,000 pts and Necrons around 5,000.
Now my girlfriend also has two armies, around 5,000 pts of Orks and 2,000 pts of Slaanesh Daemons.
Oh and my son has 8,000 pts of Dark Angels.
But me... only two armies.

I own in various sizes of 3k upwards
Orks (Goffs)
Wolves
Eldar (Ulthwe)
Crons (personal tomb world)
IG (Mordians)
Nids (personal hive scheme)
IKs (two in Wolf livery, one personal freeblade)
and have a KDK/WE army in boxes. But not impressed with them so will likely sell them and pick up something else.

UGH... this hurts to think about (all the money and time put into these). Please keep in mind that not all models in these armies are fully assembled or painted. Most are fully assembled... or assembled to the point to where painting would be difficult if I further assembled. And, I only have like two armies painted, and two close to being painted (several other armies are in various states from bare plastic to based to some detail painted). Also, I might need to move some vehicles (like Rhinos) around between armies to make up the full point values.
BUT...
Adeptus Custodes - ~1000 points
Astra Militarum - ~2000 points
Dark Angels - over 4000 points (mostly painted)
Deathwatch - I believe 1000+ points if not closer to 2000
Grey Knights - 1000+ points
Imperial Knights - ~2000 points when allies are included (mostly painted)
Chaos Daemons - Probably over 2000 points but all models bought for Age of Sigmar instead of 40K
Death Guard - ~2000 points
Craftworlds - ~1200-1500 points
Drukhari - over 1000 points
Genestealer Cults - Probably around 750 points
Necrons - ~2000 points (mostly painted)
T'au - ~2000 points (fully painted)
Tyranids - ~2000 points (fully painted)
Ynnari - combining Ynnari-specific, Craftworlds, Drukhari, and Harlequins... 3000+ points
Ugh... hurts again to see how much money and time has gone into just the hobby part of 40K for me (and that doesn't include AoS). My Warhammer New Year's Resolution is to SLOW DOWN so that I don't burn myself out assembling or painting models (as I prefer my models be painted before they hit the table).
Now, of all the armies listed above, Ynnari (or more specifically Drukhari) have been the ones that I've wanted to paint and play on the table the most over the past few years. So, I intend for my 1000 point Drukhari army to be my next painting project.

From 3.5 edition to 6th Edition my main army was Chaos Marines/Demons - I have about 7k ish which I rearly use now.
since then I have been playing AdMech/Skitarii/Knights and have about 5k of AdMech, and a Warden, Valiant & several Armigers of each flavour.
Oh and a smattering of various other Imperial forces, e.g. Marines, Deathwatch, Custodes, Scions, Inquisition, Rogue Trader (generally enough for a Kill team or a bit more).

Hrm..
I've got two Guard armies, almost as much Iron Warriors CSM stuff, Eldar, GK, Tau, Sisters, Tyranids, and potentially Custodes here shortly. Used to have Orks as well, have enough loyalist SM stuff to run a 2.5/3k list if I ever got it all coherently put together and painted.

At the moment, two. A pure BA army, and a smattering of whatever Sisters I hadn't sold off to pay for college textbooks.
Primarily collecting the pure BA, might sell the rest of the Sisters off to get new minis once they get released. Depends on finances.
Technically I "have" some Guard, but they're my nephew's infantry-based cadian regiment. Though he wants to expand in to some vehicles. Wants valkyries and vendettas, mostly, I'll grant.

Technically I only own "Vanilla Space Marines". Of course "Vanilla Space Marines" can be seven or eight different chapters at this point, and can be another three if I include DA, BA, and SW (although as stated I don't own any of their specialty models). And also Death Watch with barely a "this counts as that" to be had.
And by nature Marine models can easily stand in for Custodes, Grey Knights, or Chaos as well.

I did stick to one army for a while when I started (40k Orks) but then the addiction kicked in and I now have added 40k Necrons, AoS Sigmar, AoS Khorne, 40k Admech/Knights, 40k Tau ... I'm thinking AoS Skaven might be next

Armies that are assembled and painted;
Dark Angels (around 60 models including vehicles)
Deathwatch (32 models)
Tzeench Daemons (34 painted models, 1K Sons never got past one finished model)
Vanilla SM chapter from 4th or 5th Ed with custom colour-scheme (can't remember.. 30 or so I think)
I have easily double that amount of SM still on the sprues/undercoated/part done, plus a heap of chaos stuff, and other random stuff from starter boxes. I think I have about 15 or 20 Deathwing terminators in primer, along with Belial.
