It certainly makes a convincing case for giving nids an organic paintjob rather then the traditional flesh/chitin method.

Love how clean the carapace pattern is! Fantastic use of natural colouration - you've really acheived something with how eye-catching, yet un-garish they are, great work, would love to see them on a tabletop, munching suckers!

Simply the best Tyranid color scheme I have ever seen.
But forget the painting, the force composition and everything else.... I want to tell you how damn good that puddle looks on Old One Eye! It really adds so much character for me.
I recently read a theory on "Blanchitsu" and capturing the character of a model and this really sprung out at me for some reason. Beautiful use of water effects!

Me too, but I had the wings, so I figured it'd be a shame not to magnetize/paint them too. I'm not really about that flyrant+devourers meta.
Saevio Ferrum wrote:My only question now is, what’s next?!
This weekend should be another brood of 12 Termagants, which is all I need to hit 1000pts. Then it's time for some army shots, then probably a brief hiatus while I work on terrain for a little while.

Hollow wrote:Really cool work. Love the army and I really love the board. I've been wanting to do a beach themed battle board for ages and I'd love some tips on how you did the watcher sand etc... (Those trees are cool too!)
The deep water was built up with Envirotex Lite with a dash of VMC Blue Green, then the top layer (waves) and shallow water were done with Woodland Scenics Water Effects, with a drybrush of white on the waves.
The sand is just sand from a hardware store, painted with Liquitex Parchment, drybrushed Liquitex Titanium White, washed with heavily thinned Liquitex Raw Umber. It's a surprisingly close match for the completely different process I use on my bases.

Love seeing the updates to your force man, such a beautiful scheme. Your work here and on YT is one of the motivators that got me finally working on a Tyranid force of my own that I've had bouncing around in my head for a couple years.
Love the work on your Tyrant and warriors especially. The magnetization is really smart and these latest claws addition to the tyrant makes him even more menacing than even the scything talons version.
Always looking forward to seeing what you do next!

Argive wrote:I love the queen from aliens, I mean the old metal hive tyrant
It's actually an old Forge World Hive Tyrant, which was mostly based on the 3rd Ed design but with some alterations (different head crest, addition of back vents, of course lots more detail overall), and more importantly is about 50% larger. The 3rd Ed Hive Tyrant is smaller than the current one, to the point where I often see people run it as a Prime, but the FW Tyrant is actually significantly taller than the current model.

Very nice. I'm curious about how you're shading the black areas like the hooves (making black look good is something I haven't exactly figured out yet); is that done by hand or is it a wash or is it contrast paint?

Soul Samurai wrote:Very nice. I'm curious about how you're shading the black areas like the hooves (making black look good is something I haven't exactly figured out yet); is that done by hand or is it a wash or is it contrast paint?
There's a full tutorial video over in my project log, but for the hooves/claws it's just two washes of Army Painter Dark Tone over white, nothing fancy.
Most of what you have described as 'black' is actually varying shades of grey. On these models, which were painted more traditionally, the 'black' started as VMC Dark Grey, highlighted VMC Neutral Grey and then VMC Light Grey, and then given a thin black wash (2:1 water/VMC Black Glaze). The key to painting black is that 'black' objects only actually look black in their darkest points, so you generally should only use black paint for the very deepest recess shading. If most of the model is a dark grey with black in the deepest recesses, your brain perceives it as black.
Similar advice goes for white- only use it as the very lightest highlight. If the model is actually mostly light grey but highlighted with white on the extreme edges, it'll look 'white'.
If you want more advice, I'd suggest starting a thread over in the general modeling/painting subforum and I'd be happy to provide more examples.

I guess it's because of the larger surface area, but those heirodules seem to have a lot more of that deep reddish brown visible. It makes them stand out a little from the rest of your models. I do really like it, I actually think it looks even better than the smaller models!

I agree, it makes the larger models look more mature, like they took longer for the Hives to grow and spawn. Which is probably true.

It's not the absolute best Tyranid paintjobs I've seen on an individual level, but at an army wide level, this is unmatched for me as of yet. Maybe that guy with the DBZ paintscheme is probably the only one who matches it.
You've made this scheme so popular that I feel like we are two dexes away from it being an official scheme
The Hive Tyrant conversion is so good. very reminiscent of this old queen:
That purple tongue on the Carnifex with the claws, minor detail, but how did you paint this? I really love that purple.
8042
Post by: catbarf
Thank you both! Nitro, just to be clear, I did basically no conversion to the Hive Tyrant- it's just an old Forge World one with magnetized limb sockets, and then Broodlord arms (also magnetized) fit perfectly and really play up the Alien Queen look.
The purple tongue is just a coat each of Red Tone and Blue Tone over white (not mixed; applied separately so as to make that mottled look) and then liberally coated with gloss varnish.

Whoops- they're Army Painter washes. The entire scheme is Vallejo Model Color paints and Army Painter washes; if there's anything else you're curious about with the paint scheme I put up a pair of tutorials on Youtube. A search for 'coconut crab Tyranids' ought to return them.

I love the new additions, jaw dropping!
I've always wanted to paint up some raveners, and even go further and make a tyranid snake army with raveners, rippers, mawlocs and trygons. That there isn't an HQ option is annoying, I wish HQ's weren't mandatory in every detachment. Giving a warrior prime a snake tail is fine, but a bit unsatisfying

Now to track down half a Leviathan box. And I will need to figure out how to make some of those amazing bioships of my own. Perfect for Full Thrust.
Outstanding!
