Dakka Painting Challenge Round 72: February 2021: Showing Off @ 2021/02/01 11:20:43

Post by: Nevelon

Welcome all to the 72nd round of the Dakka Painting challenge. For those who haven't seen the challenge before, it is a community-focused friendly competition open to anyone on the site, regardless of your skill level or experience. Every round contributes towards a League table, which ultimately means nothing but is a lot of fun to keep an eye on and jockey for position with Dakka's other painters.

Showing Off: Whether it is skill, proficiency or sheer strength, some warriors revel in displays of their talents. Your entry should feature models known for their pride and showiness.

How To Enter
- You may enter up to 5 MODELS as a SINGLE ENTRY, and are permitted one entry per member per month. If you enter multiple models, they should ideally be related in some way, such as part of the same squad, unit or scene if you are doing a diorama
- You MUST post a 'proof' picture of your entry in the thread of the state it was in before you started working on it; this must be either unassembled, unpainted, primed or coated a single colour. Entries that do not submit a valid Proof Picture will not be eligible for voting.
- After this, you may post WIP pictures in this thread and your own if you wish, and on completing the entry, you may post up to 6 final pictures IN THIS THREAD that will then be used for voting. Please note that pictures in a montage or collage picture will be considered individual images for this purpose, so while these types of presentation are certainly acceptable, please keep the image limit in mind when compiling them. For example, a collage of 5 images and one separate image would count as your 6 picture allowance.

So What Do I Win?
- Points... and points mean... bragging rights for the next month! Following the vote, points will be awarded to every entrant. This year, the Points you receive will be equal to the Percentage of Votes your entry receives in the final Voting thread; if you get 10%, you get 10 points, if you get 6% you get 6 points, so on and so forth.

These points will be used to form a league table, which will be updated month on month as the results come in.

How Long Do I Have?
This challenge begins 1st of February and will end at midnight Eastern time on the 28th of February. After this, I shall compile the finished entries into a new thread, and voting will run for 5 days.

@kb_lock - will he be doing a backflip, like in DoW3? I mean, that's like the pinnacle of showing off, at least in Termie armour

(Have to order some stuff first for my own entry, let's see if this works out with all the pandemic-related delays ...)

Not quite, instead he will be showing off all the fantastic gifts he was given by colleagues and enemies alike.
Such as;
A Guardian Spear (which I may convert to a Pyrithite Spear)
The Blade of Magnus
A Fenrisian Ale horn (with that rancid effluent replaced with something far more befitting a Chapter Master)
Blood Angels 2nd company banner ornament
And a vast array of other things which were totally gifts.

Hmm. I think some flashy lightsaber action is called for. Maul and Ahsoka, potentially a couple of flashy rebels too. That or fancy gunslingers for Shadows of Brimstone.

Not sure what I will enter in the end, but they all fit the theme very well. My "want to enter" is Eowyn, because it's the outfit she wears when showing off her sword skills in Meduseld (nearly hitting Aragorn, who in her defense, was creeping up on her ).

@Viterbi: Do Eowyn! I love seeing people's Middle-Earth stuff, plus I have that model (not painted yet) myself so it would be cool to see someone else do it.

As for my own entry, I think Space Wolves fit the theme of guys who like to show off:

I'll be painting this five-man Intercessor Pack. It'll be a nice change from all the Dark Angels and bright yellow Sisters of Battle I've been painting recently.

I may as well enter.

I already started a thread on these models (help with plastic sprues) as I can't even assemble them properly, so I doubt I'll be doing much "showing off". But it might provide some motivation to get the unit done before the end of the month.

As for the models themselves, they are Militarum Tempestus Scions. I don't think they think themselves as show-offs, but I am entering them on the basis that other troops think they are "show offs".

Militarum Tempestus Scions are often viewed with fear or resentment by the regular troops – nicknames such as ‘glory boys’ and ‘big toy soldiers’ are common.
(Codex Astra Militarum, p64).

I knew Anne-Marie was OOP, but is she actually rare/sought after? I think I have one more somewhere...

I haven't really thought about it very much, but the pink/white color scheme feels a little too on-the-nose.

If she IS super rare, there is one for sale (painted, poorly) for $5.50 on noble knight

I think a pink/white colour scheme done right would look amazing - especially if you are going to weather it

This should about do it. What's more showy than a space viking psycher? One who's casting some sort of ice lance.

Did all the sculpting on it over the last month. Then realized I missed an opportunity for another piece so that's why it's got some white lol.

Well, rarity is relative - it's dreadball, so cheap plastic and all that. But she goes for 5-10, usually. Can't wait to see your take!

Progress of a kind...

... I am not enjoying painting these at all. There's just too much "stuff" on the models. Too much detail and overlapping bits getting in the way and I don't even want to think about having to glue the arms/guns on, then fill in the gaps with milliput over the paint, but I couldn't think of any other way to do them and I'm committed to that plan now...

... anyhoo, one should always finish what they started. Might be a total disaster but at least it will be a learning experience.

Your making it quite difficult, there should not be any gaps when the model is finally assembled and definitely no need for putty after painting.

Well, there is. And just saying, "there shouldn't be" is not helpful.

---------------------------------

Edit: well, I am down to four models. This is very much un-me, I'm usually pretty chill, but I am ashamed to admit I lost my temper. These scions are without a doubt the most frustrating experience I have had in many years of miniature painting.

The solution with super-glue and modelling putty worked surprisingly well on the others, but on one, for whatever reason the glue just would not stick. Which is extremely frustrating considering it sticks like concrete to everything else (including all over the model where I don't want it).

Every time I tried to glue it down, the joints got caked with more super-glue that would not not come off but also would not stick and the model looked uglier and uglier until I gave up and threw it out.

I'm half tempted to swear off ever buying such fiddly, detailed models in my life again and half tempted to buy the same packet again and give it another shot from the start, god help me, but I must be doing something very wrong or every 40K enthusiastic would be going mad.

I just can't see how it is possible to paint them nicely without painting all the bits separately and then gluing them together. Even with the arms not connected, the hose really got in the way as well as various bits of over-lapping armour and backpacks! I would have liked to have them even more separated! How do people usually work with these things? God knows it would be impossible to paint them fully assembled to any decent standard.

You can see in the photo below and example of where I have filled in a gap between the forearm and shoulder joint.

I finished the first Dreadball captain:

The rules describe him as a martial artist, so I gave him Shaolin orange robes while keeping the same gold and grey accents as the rest of the team. Being restic (and older restic at that), the details are soft, but he'll work well enough on the pitch.

The test banshee is off to a good enough start that I’m going to get the rest of the gals to follow. Still need to do all the edge work and highlights, but the color palette works for me. And is pretty quick to do, so that’s a plus.

Sounds frustrating. The green and gold look really good. An excellent color scheme. Monthly challenge aside, it may be a good idea to step away from the models for a while.

Keep the faith, man.

Here's the second model for this month's pledge, the captain of the Crystallan Dreadball team:

I took more than my usual care (read:none) in cleaning mold lines-- old Mantic restic is just too terrible to do more than a cursory cleanup. The character is described as a veteran of the game, thus all the extra cybernetics. Being older restic, the rock, metal, and crystaline parts all look sort of the same, so I had to keep going back to the rulebook the figure out what was what. He'll work well enough on the board, though.

Sorry to hear that. I know this feeling all too well. Happened a couple of times, even to the point of taking a long break from the hobby.

 The Pig-Faced Orc wrote:

For regular game models I usually glue them together anyway, and do my best to paint all the detailed areas. Washes are my friend here.
That being said, doing that is not always possible. When I have to paint in sub assemblies, I use blue tack or something similar to test fit the pieces together to see that they fit well before painting. If there are any gaps when I actually start to assemble the painted pieces, I usually fill the attachable area with greenstuff, using it as "glue" to fit the pieces and filling the gaps. Then I remove the parts for briefly to cover the "mold" with a tiny amount of super glue and then press the parts together once more. The leftover stuff coming out off the joints gets wiped carefully with a knife or a mold line remover tool. Slight paint fixes must be done usually.

I didn't mean to be rude, could it be possible that the arms have been mixed as they are numbered for certain weapons?

Thanks for all the replies and the support everyone. This really is a nice forum with good people.

Yes, I have decided to step away from the models for a while as somebody suggested, so I am withdrawing from this competition, but I will be back. It's a great idea to run competitions like this.

I have decided I will keep and finish two of the five models. The other three I am just not happy with as there is glue everywhere and I have no motivation to finish them. And I will buy another packet at some time and try again painting them in smaller assemblies, using what I learned the first time to avoid getting bits caked in glue and avoid having to paint parts that need acrobatic brush work to get the bristles to the model.

 Rybrook wrote:

That's not rude at all, and I did indeed make that mistake at first with a few of them, assuming that the parts were interchangeable. However, I did realize the mistake before starting to paint, so snapped the parts off and got them all organized properly. By then it was a bit too late however, as the the superglue had caked onto various joints making the fits ugly and difficult to work with.

Mind you I'm still sceptical about how easily they "just fit" considering the shoulder joint can be attached at virtually and rotation and some slightly different angles which would throw everything else off a lot.

If nobody objects, I'd like to modify my project for the month:

The models I chose are proving to be much less fun to paint than I'd planned. Instead, I'd like to paint Anne-Marie Helder (assembled) and her team, the Void SIrens. Rather than the official pink-and-white colors, I'll be doing them in pink and black. If I manage to find the inspiration, I'll work on the other captain models this month, but I doubt they'll turn out well enough to share in the Challenge.

So I’ve been struggling to find motivation to paint and I really didn’t have a good idea for this month’s theme, until I realised I have just bought the Aliens board game, so I’m going to go with the ultimate badass, PFC William L Hudson. The man with everything from particle beam phalanxes through to sharp sticks most definitely counts as a show-off in my books!

I could probably dig out some old lead and join in. Next time we ask for suggestions, toss a few harlie ones up there. Nothing too obvious/restrictive, but something like “dancers of death” could cover not just clowns, but also any swashbuckler or agility based fighter.

This month actually fits them very well, as they do tend to showboat around the battlefield. Would be a laugh if we could get a whole troupe painted up and entered.

OK, OP should be updated to this point. Amazing work so far!

@JoshInJapan You want to replace the 2 finished captains with the new team? Or mix and match? All of them would take you over the normal 5 model limit, but I might be able to forget how to count if you just want to enter the lot of them...

I’m at the dreaded edge lines and cleanup stage; my least favorite part of painting. But the gals are coming together nicely.

I think I'll replace the Captains entirely. The next one in line is going to extremely frustrating and not a lot of fun to paint. I'll pick the best five of the team and use them for my final entry.

Out of curiosity, are Space Marine-adjacent models acceptible? Naturally, I have a ton of unpainted SM, but since I don't play 40K anymore, they're pretty low priority for me. I'd be more likely to get some use out of Deadzone Enforcers. They wear power armor, so they're almost the same, right?

Really? What the heck? I have like 5 KD minis on my desk and I'm a girl who likes to paint. I for one enjoy my warhammer but the community does have some very toxic cultural aspects. One of them is the hardcore fanboys. I lose followers over my female marines. Even get people who come to harass me and downvote my work. Imo, if those people unfollow you then good riddance to bad rubbish.

I find that happens mostly when I don't post Warhammer related content on my feed. Most people are after a specific type of content and I think that shows in the likes and all that engagement stuff. When I post the odd scale model that kind of stuff happens and that's what I put it down to and don't read any further into it.

Great model by the way, fantastic work.

For what it's worth, your art is fantastic and if they can't appreciate that despite occasionally seeing non-warhammer related posts then F 'em.

I for one want to try to paint that same model you JUST posted but in oils I think. Just cuz I'm afraid, I got TWO whole copies of her haha! I hope I can do better than my previous attempt now that I've been pushing myself to learn new techniques on blending. We shall see!

I need to do more in oils. I painted my Barliman Butterbur in oils and it came out ok, but there's things I didn't do like letting the paints soak on paper for a bit first, which would have vastly improved the work. I'm happy to just use the ones I have to improve certain areas of my acrylic work. I think trying to start all oils will be more hassle than it's worth at the minute.

Special thanks go out to:
Rowboat Griddlepan for the excellent gift of his helmet (he never used it anyway)
Marneus Calgar for the wonderful crotch plate - shame it is so tight
Constantin Valdor for the spiffy new Guardian Spear
Belisarius Cawl for anointing the Blade of Magnus, which was "technically" a gift, but he's a heretic so we had to get it washed

And of course the newest member of the Blood Ravens, Bjorn for the hunting horn and very fashionable wolf... parts

Ooh that's a nice gold! What gold paint is that? I've always struggled to find a good gold paint, but that one is really nice. In other news, I got some progress done. My color scheme is inspired by the new battletome cover:

The gold is retributor armour with a recess wash of reikland fleshshade from citadel. I'm always searching for a better gold but the Vallejo Metal Color gold is never in stock and I want to try it. I had intended on doing my own scheme for the Slaanesh boys but the battletome scheme is solid so I've gone for the gold/silver armour they have.

That's a great looking archer so far, the skin tone you've used works well with the purple.

Slann WIP:

I struggled to find the right balance between bright colors and believable shading. My usual method (drench everything in brown ink) wasn't necessarily right for this project. I tried different things for different colors.

Overall I'm fairly pleased with the warband although given more time I'd say I could improve a few details. I've spoilered larger photos again so Nev, if you'd kindly use the big images for voting that'd much appreciated!

Completed an entry for the monthly challenge. First time in a while. I should take some better photos for the comp, but not sure I'll get that done by tomorrow.

The cars are for Gaslands, for a team with the sponsor Miyazaki, who came up through the underground Tokyo street racing scene. Miyazaki drivers are known for their daring and precision behind the wheel. Also, she has a sponsor perk called "Showing Off".
Seems to fit the theme pretty nicely.

Not the most outstanding paint job ever, but the white and the yellow were a bit of a pain in the and I've now officially broken my 2021 slump. I've started several projects and minis this year, but these are the first ones "finished". I'd like to do some detail and lettering on them somewhere, but probably not going to happen. At least not before the end of February.
So, without further ado, here they are: (Proof pic at the end)

Okay so I know I usually post WIP photos here but I've been really keeping them for my instagram lately. I finally finished today and I definitely could have used another week and still gotten things finer tuned. This is what happens when I showcase a model for a friend at the same time as here so I may end up doing more D&D models for the future entries assuming they meet the criteria. *crosses fingers* Anyways, take a look!

@joshinjapan I took that inspiration and jumped into the NMM. And while we're here, I love your pink models!!!

@DJJazzyJeff - Your proof pic looks unrelated to your entry. Unless you scratch built those cars using darts and golf cleats. In which case, wow! I trust that you did everything in the month, so not a huge deal.

@Chris56 - What is that you are painting? I don’t recognize it to give a title to your entry.

@ Arakasi (and everyone else) I’ll bump the deadline back 24 hours. Gives everyone an extra day to polish things up and get those final pics in. I’ll probably formally close it Tuesday morning, because I’m far too old to stay up until midnight just to wrap this up. As I’ve been more diligent this month keeping the OP updated, the vote should take less time to finish. Barring the usual onslaught on last second entries...

OP should be updated to this point.

@Tyranid Horde: Really liking the colors on your entry. Not your usual set of minis, but I love them!

Sorry for not posting my proof picture earlier.
Took me a while to figure out what to paint, as I was too keen on doing more converted Krieg sentinels (similar as my last month's entry).
When I was done with them, I did not have much time left. Decided to clear my backlog a bit and paint some Meganobz that have been waiting for their turn for a few years.
Proof pic from last week:

Holy macaroni....trust me to be posting my junk after modock...
Seriously - great work modock. I've seen the promo version of that sculpt and I reckon yours is better. Great stuff.
I agree that there is some great work coming in all over the place - I love the gasland cars (I've done a few of those myself for fun) and the predators. Well done all round.

Here is my woefully inadequate entry!

Sorry Nev - I should have given it a title in the proof. He is the leader of the 'Untamed Beasts' warband from the original boxset.

I have tried to give him a 'first nations' kind of feel, using darker skin tones and a kind of Australian Indigenous art style to the cape. I'm happy with the idea but probably needed more time on the execution. I'm also pretty happy with the dark skin as this is the first time I have tried it. I think I am going to experiment with this more in future.
Anyhow, here he is.

And on that note, good time to mention that Nevelon has set up a retrospective thread for this year, so head over there and share your thoughts on how the last 12 rounds have gone for you. Given the notably high quality of so many entries in recent months, it should be quite the thread once a few folks hop in with their entries.

I had next to no time to do any painting for this this month. I did manage to get about an hour and a half to do this though. I decided to just paint quick and loose, trying not to think about it too much.

This is Vanessa The Treasure Hunter from Malifaux. She's swinging a flaming, possibly magic staff around. I consider that to be showing off.

I didn't find the time or motivation for all five harlequins, and even had problems with the one I did complete. Managed something like a diamond pattern on the third attempt though. I couldn't think of what to do with the base at the last minute, so it's painted gloss black.

EDIT: Thanks to the extension I was able to get a photo in natural light. I still quite like the black background pictures though.

My Initiative stat hovers somewhere between 0 and 1 under normal circumstances, so this past year has just been extra challenging to get any extra motivation. I like the Lumineth range a lot but they're admittedly quite ... weird, so I thought that giving them a kind of Prog Rock album cover / Métal Hurlant comics vibe with lotsa gradients and psychedelic colours might fit.
