Refuge from the Fantasy Flight Games forums purge, now joining DakkaDakka. I mainly dabble in X-wing and Star Wars related stuff though not exclusively. My main area of expertise is scratch building though I do consider myself a decent painter as well.

First to be posted here is my latest project, two scratch built 'realistic' CT-900 StarScavengers, built to an approximate X-wing scale (1/270). It is a ship that only otherwise exists as a computer model in the show where it originated from (Lego Star Wars: The Freemaker Adventures) or as a Lego model.

As it turns out, the commissioner of these two ships were actually one of the guys that produced and created the show in question so that was bloody awesome! Pretty much as close as official as you can get without the house of the mouse stamp of approval.

I figure I might show some of my previous work as well, not just the very recent stuff.

This I just call the Skink Firespray as the paint job was inspired by the very real Skilton's Skink lizard found on the west coast of North America. Last picture show the lizard in question.

Still older work but anyway, here's two AT-RT walkers that started their life as Wizard of the Coast models from their 2004 Star Wars game. The original models were awful with the sculpt rather lacking in details. More importantly the material used was a soft, almost rubbery, plastic. Let's count all the things I had to do to make them presentable:

Re-positioned the legs considerably so the models stands straighter and taller
Added some pistons to the legs
Added an antenna array
Moved the entire top pod forwards
Added footrests
Removed the original gun and mounting point
Replaced the gun mount with a new one with a magnet added
Scratch built / kitbashed all three gun options and of course magnetized them
Replaced the original pilot
Replacement pilot needed extensive work to legs, feet and arms in order to have the right position.

Many people who commission me to paint for them are perfectly happy with a simpler paint job, no need for all that fancy highlighting. The small size and scale of X-wing models make this highly feasible and a tidy paint job with proper shading is really all that is needed for a decent looking model. Case in point, here's one of my latest projects, a Scurrgh H-6 bomber. It isn't terribly fancy but it certainly gets the job done.

As a side note this is a companion to two other ships I painted last year and all three share the same colours and scheme so I suspect the idea is to have a themed squad.

Already two months since I last posted anything? What dark hole did the time disappear into? And no I don't need an answer for that.

Here's a collection of three scratch built Arquitens-class light cruiser I've built over the years. These beasts are about 50 cm long and when I built the first one, there was almost no solid info on the ship type. They also earn the distinction of being too large to fit in my photo setup so the pictures are of worse quality than usual.

It is also my first time painting a TIE Reaper and I was surprised by the size, though Admittedly most of the 'bulk' so to speak comes from the massive set of solar panels surrounding the main hull so the size is a bit deceptive.

Szarekh the Silent King may not be the largest nor the most detailed model I've ever painted, but it's probably the most complex in terms of design. It is also a ridiculously impractical model and I struggle to see how this could possibly be painted if not left as several sub assemblies. I myself had 29 parts lying around that needed to be painted separately. It took me almost three months but I persevered and it all came together quite nicely in the end.

As for the paint job, the commissioner (a good friend of mine) specifically wanted something highly similar to the official model, though overall darker. I sometimes wonder if he is a closet emo at heart. I also apologize for the lack of close up pictures but for some reason those came out really bloody grainy.

Amazing job!

Totally agree on sub assemblies these days. I think GW just has to bite the bullet and include recommended sub assemblies in the instructions.

These days if you follow their directions you'll get a gorgeous, intricate model, that is @#$%ing impossible to paint.

Recommended sub assemblies sounds like a good idea. And therefore the very antithesis to GW's current existence.

Though I will certainly give them credit for their engineering skills. This model only have three plastic sprues and two of those are identical. It's quite ingenious how the model all comes together when you are building it.

Here's my latest X-wing related commission, Yoda's personal starfighter. I'll be the first to admit to admit that the paint job really isn't anything special, but that's not the point. No, the most noteworthy thing about the ship is how damn tiny it is. I'm certain that this is the smallest model I've ever painted on a commission basis.

Not a commission for once, but rather a challenge I set for myself. A diamond pattern, large amounts of yellow, free hand designs and object source lightning makes for a fearsome combination in terms of complexity. And yellow will forever be Satan's gift(?) to painters.

Damn it's been almost three months since my last post. Though admittedly, my latest project took a great deal longer than I had anticipated. Speaking of...

This is one of the models I've been working on, a Star Wars Legion LAAT/le patrol transport unit. The paint job is not really anything special, just the standard imperial light grey. However it has been upgraded with a few extra features.

The passenger bay and crew compartment has been fully painted and the doors and canopy (I used 28 tiny 1x1 mm magnets on it) can be opened/removed. The crew can also be removed and the lower pair of solar panels can fold so the model can land properly.

My latest project is rather special. It is a set of two speeders intended for Star Wars Legion, though I do not really know what they are supposed to represent in game.

These are based on some concept art that the commissioner liked. I was originally supposed to scratch build them, but the commissioner made such a good 3D model that it was instead decided to 3D print everything. I only had to add some details, do some simple modifications and paint the whole lot.

The crew models will be included in my next post.

And here is the promised crew. All of them are magnetized and can be swapped around between six possible positions in the speeders. However, some are limited to only one or two places due the poses they are in. For instance, the drivers in particular can only realistically be placed in the drivers seat.

Here's what is basically an add-on to the LAAT/le project I finished earlier this year, four stormtroopers disembarking the vehicle.

Two provides covering fire while the other two rappels down. They provide no in game benefit, they are just there to add some style and flair to the model. All magnetized of course so they can be removed should it be necessary to close the hatches. Fun little side note, I had to raid my mother's sewing kit to find a 'rope' of suitable thickness.

I've never seen Resistance either, but from what I've heard from others, Resistance wasn't the best show, with the perhaps biggest stand out feature being the ship designs.

Blue and Red Ace, as well as five more ships I haven't shown to the world yet, are from Mel Miniatures on Shapeways, https://www.shapeways.com/shops/mel_miniatures,

Jarek Yeager's personal ship is another one with yellow as a decent part of the colour scheme, but this time that wasn't the most difficult part. While it might be difficult to see, it's the grey colour mixes that are annoying.

There's something like five or six grey mixes on this ship, and when you have that many similar colours on one model, often very close to each other as well, it can be difficult to make them distinct enough from each other. There's a very real risk of colours basically blending together.

Two posts this time as I quite frankly forgot to post this one last week.

Anyway, I'm rather proud of this one since I've managed replicate just about all of the sponsor decals found on the original. They might not always be perfect representations, but they are present and accounted for and this ship is already small to begin with.

In fact on some of the detail photos you can see pieces of debris/lint close to the decals, normally those are so small that the human eye can barely see them unassisted, so it should provide a decent size comparison. And before anyone asks, I painted these by hand without any sort of magnification.

It was first mentioned in Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith Incredible Cross-Sections back in 2005. The current Disney Canon reintroduced it in 2018, but it is still a very rare ship. Other than source books its only notable appearance seems to have been in an RPG supplement book, Stay on Target from 2014.

As for in universe, it was supposedly used by the Republic during the Clone Wars but it has certainly never been pictured in any movie, show, or comic book.

And here is a TX-225 GAVw "Occupier" combat assault tank from Rogue One for use with Star Wars Legion. It's not the official model, it is instead a fully 3D printed model. The original runs on threads but the commissioner felt it would be more 'Star Wars' to make it be a repulsor vehicle. To the end, the threads have been removed and the model converted slightly to make it look like it hovers above the ground.

And now for something not related to Star Wars. This is basically how I envision Kratos from the God of War series, specifically the PlayStation 2 games, would look if he were a Warhammer Ork. Kratork as I have begun calling him is not meant to used on the battlefield, instead this is purely a display model.

Back to Star Wars. This is Blue Leader from Rogue One, which I still maintain is the only good/decent Star Wars related thing to come out of The house of the Mouse. Yes I will die on this hill.

Here's a what if scenario: What if Ashoka Tano had repainted an A-wing in the same colors as her Delta-7B Aethersprite from the Clone wars? This is my take on that idea.

I didn't know that Ezra Bridger from Star Wars Rebels fame piloted an RZ-1T trainer A-wing. Heck I didn't even know there was a trainer version of the A-wing, though in hindsight it does makes sense.

The Sentinel-class landing craft, the big brother of the far more well known Lambda Shuttle. This one is 3D printed but I actually scratch built one of these many years ago. This one is obviously better in just about every regard, except one. Mine had moveable/folding wings, something this model can't do.

Awesome work as usual!

I always loved seeing your stuff, especially the X-Wing scratch builds. Good to see you're still at it.

Why thank you. I've never stopped scratch building stuff though it's been a while since I did a Star Wars scratch build.

This is a bit of an oddball. I was commissioned to paint a Kihraxz using the same colours and style of markings as a factory painted G-1A Starfighter.

However, the commissioner admits that he thinks the stock G-1A paintjob is bloody ugly, and despite that wanted another ship to match. Oh well, he was certainly happy with the finished result.

Time for some early holiday cheer and I can think of no better way to do that than show a ship with a big honking skull painted on it.

This is one of three ships painted with the same skull theme. This particular model is a fairly low quality 3D print, but I think I've managed to make it look fairly good despite that.

Second ship with a skull painted right on top of it however unlike the previous model, this isn't a 3D print. The skull motif might look crooked, but that can be attributed to the angle the photo was taken from and the raised and rounded middle section of the ship, it looks much better in real life.

And here is the third and final ship in the trio of skull themed ships. I'm not the first to paint the Firespray in this style, but I don't know who did it first, so I can only take credit for my particular take on the idea.

Anyway, happy holidays and see you next year.

It's been a while since my last post. The reason? Baldur's Gate 3. I'm 100 hours in and it will probably hold my attention for at least 100 more hours, it's that good. Anyway, here's an SS-54 Assault ship for you to enjoy.

A bunch of Mandalorians for your viewing pleasure this time. We have two Super Commandos, Axe Woves, Koska Reeves and Gar Saxon. Take your pick, I have enough for everyone!

These are all 3D printed to a very high quality and it really shows in the sharp and crisp details and very little stepping. I also quite like the poses as they are suitably dramatic but also reasonable and realistic. I very much want to contrast these models to GW models. I feel this is how you do poses, not every model need to be pointing, shouting, or stand with one foot on a skull, or all them at the same time.

I don't really know how to classify this one. The model is supposed to represent Cad Bane's Justifier though it is clearly not. Perhaps a better word is 'inspired' by or an alternative take on the original?

This latest offering is from Mel Miniatures and it's an alternative take on the Gauntlet Fighter. It's smaller and more detailed and I feel it is a better design than the official model. However it is printed in a cheaper material than I usually work with and a lot of details on the top half lacked definition. Instead of being discouraged, I decided to treat is as a challenge and forged on. I had to painstakingly enhance and sometimes recreate nearly non existent details using nothing but highlights and shade. I'm going to shamelessly claim that I actually managed to do a pretty good job.

This also marks my ten year anniversary of doing commission work. To that end I've collected some statistics:

About 300 models painted, modified, and/or scratch built as part of a commission.

Breakdown of game systems:
Armada 1
40k 3
X-wing 217
Legion 38
Scratch builds 24
Misc 17

Most painted model:
Y-wing 15
Z-95 14
T-65 X-wing 11

Not all models needs to be extraordinarily grandiose, sometimes it can just be a simple TIE Defender with red squad markings.

It's been quite some time since the last update, but I have finally found the time to post something. And I hope that Kratos from the God of War series dressed up as a Berzerker has been worth the wait.

This was commissioned by the same person that asked me to build and paint an Ork as Kratos two years ago. Just like with that model, Berzerk Kratos is made from pieces taken from a wide range of kits, most of which have been modified in some manner, as well as some completely scratch built parts.

The base is a bit too big for the model, but that was a deliberate decision as it needed some extra heft and size to counter the stretched out nature of the blades. All in all, a model I'm very happy with and I also know that it is very likely that a Space Wolves version of Kratos will probably be commissioned in the future.
