Welcome to PaddyMick's Chopshop, the semi-legal 40K vehicle garage where I will be carrying out conversions with alternate and official 40K vehicles.
First on the chopping block is a Hades Breaching Drill I didn't want to pay Forge World prices for. Here's the official model. Mine's the Desert terrain version innit.
I am part-way through the build and need to add bits to the side, like pistons or something.
Bits used so far:
a 1/72 armourfast tank chassis I bought by mistake
Balsa wood
Raumjager Infantry model with arms and control panel from a Goliath
Goliath Rockgrinder blades
a couple of spare tank bits
Ice lolly sticks - these may feature in a few conversions as I like to eat ice lollys
I have enough parts for 2 so i'm starting the second one now
I bought the Goliath kit for a future project - it's going to be a Trukk in a Blood Axe warband, and it may also be the gift that keeps on giving, as I'll use the Incinorator gun to make a Hellhound, along with these bits - a 3d printed apc, lego technics wheels and moar lollys.
I've used bits like this before for a Desert Pattern Taurox
....and finally for now, here's a glimpse of that future ork project

Great work all around!
I love the Robogear kits- have done couple of projects with them and saw the natural use of the T-rex walkers as sentinels, but could never get going doing something with them; your project has given me some ideas to get going with. I've done up a couple of the Tehnolog tanks and one of the 'monitor/guardian' tracked things- lots of fun and they used to be cheap.
Wasn't sure t first about your Hades Drills- but man, did they ever turn out good in the end! Nice adaptation nd the weathering and general grub to them makes 'em look properly well-used.
Rock on!

Cheers guys! i'm never sure how these things are going to turn out but i'm happy this time.
Re: robogear kits, yeah they are awesome, i'm gonna use the rocket launchers for a Manticore soon. When I say soon, probably next year or when the Guard codex gets released and I get inspired again.
Got a few conventional marine vehicles to paint up now, but will be getting round to starting the Ork project after that.
Many thanks for reading

Cheers, yeah, I did a showcase thread at 1000pts, Broken Skulls is the name of the custom chapter now. I'll update it soon I reckon 'cos I've got loads more done and on the way. It's 'cos of that project that this thread ain't been updated in a while, there's loads of vehicles but no conversions as such, just bodging rescues.

Those drills are great and the sentinels look like modernized/enhanced versions of the egg walking egg sentinels of RT!
Are you planning to stick to ground vehicles or is something like a converted Valkyrie in the mix?

Sounds great mate go for it
@Valhallen, no plans yet for flyers, but i'll have to have a think on that. The next stage of this project, after the stuff mentioned above, will take me into 2023 I reckon. I'm adding sandrunner cavalry and mounting my general on a giant sandworm.
Biggest vehicle in the army done is a Crassus, from an Aliens APC 3d printed prototype for a kit this guy on ebay was building, cost about £20, not muching conversion needed, but plenty of dollar saved.
Also quite pleased with the Leman Russ, from american korean war tank kits, bulked out with 2 cassette tapes in cases in the middle

Thanks mate! Looking forward to seeing some more of your stuff too, especially if it's orks.
I have loads of half started Guard stuff still to do, but could not resist jumping ahead and breaking ground on a new project. This is the big one, my dream army from when I was a kid. It's mostly RT era space ork infantry, but there are a few vehicles, and I decided to start the project with a trukk boyz mob so I could get some time in the Mek's Workshop.

Progress on more chimera chassis.
I built three scout sentinels from Robogear kits. Roll cages will be added after painting so I can get at the pilots, who are half robogear, half iron core and half raumjager infantry. The big guns are from leftover bits that could count as multi-lasers or auto-cannons, and are magnetized.
***yep I only realised after taking these pics that the legs are backwards on one sentinel, so i'll have to get the hacksaw out and re-adjust - that's why it's called the chop shop!***
BONUS PIC
I needed to give my assault squad jump packs but didn't want to spend any money, and the official ones aren't very graceful, so I chopped up a normal power pack and added my favourite building material.

Post by: Meer_Cat
_Love_ seeing Robogear and Tehnolog bits being used in conversions and yours are great!
Interesting mash-up of parts for the Sentinel pilots too, very nice looking from the pics you've provided.
I like the jump packs too- back in the day (late 80's) everyone was constrained by a) no money and b) no kits: things like Rhinos and jump packs didn't exist yet. Nice, simple, realistic within the confines of the game conversions you've made there.
Rock on!

Post by: PaddyMick
Thanks Meer_Cat. The Wargames Atlantic kits are great, I used them for all my infantry.

I need the guns on the sentinels to be Heavy Flamers, so I glued a plug fuse to each one to look like a prometheum tank. The barrel kinda works as a flamer too, I like it.
I knew burnt out plug fuses would be worth adding to the bits box. I think only the UK uses them though.

Post by: Killatores
nice work on those vehicles, I particularly like the grinder track ones.
I would suggest to try adding an extra layer of smaller details, such as little screws or actual GW bits to finish some of the areas and not leave too many flat/untextured surfaces.
You did a good job on the rhinos with the wheels, although I find the wheels design a bit too toy-like, but interesting nonethelsess. Before adding the details I would have sanded the surfaces, since it clearly looks like a 3d printed model. Maybe you make it work with some interesting weathering and painting
124751
Post by: PaddyMick
Cheers Killatores, that's interesting, I never even thought about sanding them down to get rid of the lines. I won't be doing to these as they are already nearly done but I may try it on the next 3d printed stuff I do.

You an probably use milliput to fill the surface first, and sand it after. Its work, but I would say it would give a better final result.
106010
Post by: Meer_Cat
The heavy flamers look neat- I'm stealing that idea!
'Sfunny, it never occurred to me to try sanding 3d printed pieces down until Killatores mentioned here, and now it seems so obvious. I had a bunch of printed wall sections that were supposed to be stucco and the print lines just didn't work. I tried smoothing them out by 'painting' white glue on them, but that wasn't terribly successful. The trick of smearing milliput on and then sanding smooth sounds like it can't miss, though, looking forward to trying it out.
Age old trade off: Print at finer resolution and take a lot longer or print faster with a rougher surface at the end.
Great addition to your Sentinels!

Some painting progress on the Malcador. It's not far off ready. I've had to put the flamer sponsons at the front. Those and the turret and tank is magnetized so I can use the base to mount something else in the future.

Very nice! The weathering is well done- it's easy to go overboard and foul everything up beyond all recognition ( FUBAR). Good use of color to make things pop too- the yellow fuel tank underneath, the bits of red. I particularly like the no-slip plating in the bottom of the crew area: grubby where it should be, dull but comparatively clean where it shouldn't. That's an area that is too easy to get carried away in (no pun intended).

Cheers Meer_Cat! Army Painter can take some credit for their special effects paints and tips on the website.
I was a little afraid of overdoing it as it was my first proper go at weathering, so deliberately held back, and i've never had a problem calling a model done as i'm always excited to move onto the next thing...which will be.... ridgerunner buggies. But loads of infantry to do first.

I have started on three buggies for my Blood Axes. The conversion work from the GSC ridgerunner kit is pretty minimal and mostly i've just stripped them down and not used the safety rails, lights etc. Metal old school crew though, and an AM heavy weapon team autocannon for the main gun 'cos i've got loads and it looked about big enough. They will count as Boomdakka Snazzwagons.

Thanks, the big kit is so much fun i'm already planning my next one. I find with GW kits that there's a lot of bits I just leave off, like exhaust pipes, bullet clips, etc - anything that's too fiddly and will break off anyway. I did hesitate for a moment before cutting the arm to fit the new pose - it's a lotta dolla, but then thought feck it, my model, i'll brutalise it. I'm a bit baffled as to why all orks now have horned skull motifs everywhere - used to be just Deathskulls - so had to shave off the one on the front; makes it look beat up and scratched which is an added bonus.
Winning the league in 2016 was special and the whle city was buzzing.... i'll never forget it, but i'm a bit disallusioned with.. not so much city, but the premier league now. I declined to renew my season ticket after lockdown. Great memories though. Let me know if you're ever visiting and fancy a small fun game of something at the flgs or a pint or
both. Automatically Appended Next Post: I have added the Axe - it's a paintbrush with a kids toy on top. I'll probably eembellish it a bit.
Being Blood Axes, I wanted some imperial weaponry, so replaced his normal shoota with 3 heavy bolters, to represent the dakka, and a heavy flamer, mainly beecause he is armed with one and it's supposed to be sticking out of his chest (which I think looks a bit silly, and I realise how that sounds coming from me) but also because I only had 3 heavy bolters.
He also has a couple if rocket launchers. The model comes with a guy firing a rack of rockets from this hatch. I've gone with this RT ork with rocket launcher, to tie in with the rest of the army.
Now I have to add 4 big shootas somewhere, maybe a few other bits, and it will be time for a black primer.

I've done some more work on what I'm calling the Squiganaut. The idea is he's lifting the willing squigs into the hatch for a 'treat' being belt fed into their mouths as they go through the gun housing but it's a rocket, they are then propelled into the enemy with hilarious results.
Only thing I have to figure out is how to get them from the back to the gun. Clear tubing? or rails? Couple more squigs to go in whatever conveyance I can come up with, and i'd like them mostly to be visible.
Also need a cool looking head, was thinking a mohican likke the bad mek who built it (below, pictured with his posse).

Great concept. The squigs are that lovely, orkish mix of weirdly cute and comical. I also like the computer screen face, it's something an ork mek would conceive.
I think your paint scheme works well enough. It makes me think of an aging whitewash that is being stained by rust. You could try sponging on some brown for chipped paint or drybrush a white for scuffed edges. Experiment with some weathering techniques and put them on top of each other.

Cheers fellas!
I was joking of course; i'm building a Grot Pirate Landship.
Ice lolly sticks make a long awaited re-appearance on this thread.
Sheet from a shortbread tin so the models with magnest won't fall off, and wheel from one of my kid's old toys
Ahoy me hearties!

Some progress on the landship. Got a top tip for the sail from Dave at MS Paints (great youtuber/hobby community) - the sail is made from a wet wipe, wrung out, then dipped in pva. Dries rigid but can be shaped.
The crew is almost finished, and i've added a runtbot mascot 'cos in 10th ed the unit needs a runtherd, and these chaps won't take the lash from an orc.

Love the concept and the finished product is so impressive. The design on the sail looks brilliant, really nice work mate!

Thanks Olthannon
I've just purchased a Stompa from ebay for cheap as it's missing it's head and arms. Watch this space...

I'm starting the Stompa build; and there are some freshly looted imperial vehicles just arrived at the Chopshop.
Can you guess which bits are going where?

Treads underneath, weapons arms to the sides!

Post by: PaddyMick
Not quite
The whole of each ARMiger will be each arm, the Dunecrawler turret will be the head, and maybe the legs for a klaw. Earthshaker cannon for a gun Automatically Appended Next Post: Actual basilisk, i'll turn into a big trakk I think

Even when you explained how you were going to use the Armingers I couldn't see it; now, complete, it looks terrific! What a novel concept to exploit the Ork penchant for incorporating captured systems (and anything else lying around handy) into their builds. Great paint job to boot!

Cheers chaps, i'm very happy with how it turned out. To be honest Meer_Cat, I didn't know how it was going to work either!
Just come back from it's first game; it has a problem moving around terrain, but it managed to punch Mortarian into space

Oh, wow, what a cool kitbash! The use of other, smaller mechs for the arms and head worked much better than I imagined when I saw the pre-assembly photos. That was truly inspired!

Absolutely awesome mate. Great job with the painting. The camo looks really cool.

I've almost completed the build on the final 'naut for the army i'm taking to Leicester GT in December
Army list
I've gone for a mad dok painboy theme. He's wired himself in like a dreadnought.
The arms and legs and feet are chopped up and re-arranged so I can try and make him standing or walking. I've added in Defiler and Chaos Knight bits too.
I'd like to give him a huge bloody butcher's apron; might try the wet wipe with PVA method I used for the grot landship sail.

That's a nifty kitbash-- all the parts fit together seamlessly, like they were from the same kit. The apron is a fun addition.

Well thats me done with orks I think, until the new codex drops in spring. Next army will be out-of-the-box marines so won't be posting them here; probably see you in the new year guys, unless I do an army showcase thread (it's finding the time to get it all out and photograph it). What I will do is post a pic of the army i'm taking to the Leicester GT in December, when i've finalised my list, which will include at least 3 of the bg guys.

Here's the army shot for the GT at the weekend. I've only taking the suqiganaut and bossnaut, as the stompa struggles to deploy or move anywhere on uktc terrain maps, as I found out in my practice game.

I've built some snot tanks. Admech breacher kit, plus metal oldhammer snot. Missile rack and mortar from gsc buggy, big rokkets from morkanaut, grenade launchers from cargo 8 ridgehauler.

Cheers Olthannon! i've undercoated them but they will have to wait for a paint job since i've got tourney this weekend and they didn;t make the list, and I need to paint other stuff. I'll post army pic and list if I get a chance. In the meantime - not a vehicle but I just completed this mob, the squig fang boyz, who will be ridin in the squiganaut coem saturday.
The mek workshop in the background is what i'm currently painting, as I am also takin it to the tourney. Sadly no conversion, as it's a multi part, 'use the model' fortification where you deploy the bits 1'' apart - and I want there to be no ambiguity when it comes to the games.

Here's my army for the International Team Tournament in Coventry this weekend. Big Mek Bobby Loo Ellen has tasked his 3 apprentices to build big robots to see who can stomp the most gitz and the lads are hanging around to loot some more scrap.

Losing games means you are playing games, which is what this is all about, right? I wish I was playing games...
Those rockets are really cool. The snotling pilots are a fun little detail.

Thanks Josh! yeah, the playing is the thing; every game told a story, or was just a good laugh, or both, and the fun started at list building weeks before, and was in discussing the meta and match ups with team mates. No local clubs where you are mate? No chance of a game?

Well, there are quite a few ex-pats in the area, but we all have such disparate work and/or social schedules that it's hard to get together. When it does happen, it's always later at night, which doesn't work for me. Maybe when my son goes to uni and I have fewer obligations at home, but for now I'm a community of one.

Ah, obligations; I get it, Got 2 young 'uns myself, so appreciate how hard it can be to carve out the time, but at least i'm lucky about having a club and no lack of people to play. I find big events suit me as a way of cramming games in and giving me something to work towards with painting, even if I only go to 2 a year. Hang in there bud!

It was actually better when he was younger-- he was my regular opponent for Deadzone and Frostgrave, up until he turned into a teenager and became too cool for his dad...
