KoW Northern Alliance army:
* Assorted 1980s Dwarf minis, mostly with 1980s era paint jobs so at least needing a wash or two...
* Blood Rage minis to be my main human forces. Mostly primed, some painting done.
* Three Shieldwolf Amazon riding bears. Assembled and primed.
* Three Mierce Walrus Dudes. Assembled and primed. These will be Snow Trolls.
Hangover from... to my somewhat lesser shame... 2022:-
One space dorf airship (converted toy). I hit a bit of a sculpting wall on this but will get back to it soon.
ALL NEW AND BLUE AND FREE FOR TWENTY-THREE:-
More Northern Alliance bits -- two units of ice elementals and one of snow foxes
Terrain scratchbuilds -- I really want to make a big-ass oil rig thing for SF skirmish and narrative gaming
28mm scale converted toy spaceships -- got at least 5 or 6 of these that want painting and probably mild conversion
My next army for F28: War Always Changes will be a Thunder Warriors & Imperial Army, Unification Wars era force. I'd like a 1200 point force painted by year's end.
*x2 small demo forces for Bolt action (US army & Italians) - build & paint.
Status:
US force is complete build wise & base coated.
(5/16/23) Italian force is now a WiP as far as the building goes.
*3k pts worth of Votann - build & paint.
Status:
*a French army for WL Games epic scale Black Powder game (whatever it's called) - build & paint.
Status: all spues from army box base coated
*finish up my 30k Iron Warrior project from this past summer/fall - finish building/painting.
Status: WiP
*Cursed City game - build & paint.
Status:
*Blood Bowl/Dungeon Bowl - build & paint (at least) two teams.
Status:
(9/18/'23) Dwarf/Oger DB team built & base coated!
10/30/'23) Dark Elf/Skaven DB team built & base coated!
*build & base coat at least 1 other kit/item from my inventory per week - in addition to planned projects.
Status: 134/52.
{Many of this # are individual minis from assorted companies. Not whole units, just one-off minis I liked enough to pick up over the years}
# of Models fully painted in 2023: 13! (though one came out fairly poorly & so almost doesn't count)

I've dialed way back on painting lately to make time for other things. That said, I finished 2 of my unpainted Knights over the break and I'm nearly finished with 4 Armigers to go along with them. That'll leave my Pile of Shame just down to:
Sisters Executioner
Dominus Class Knight
Hooch Hauler
Pretty close to caught up prior to new projects. Here's what's on the horizon:
Battletech Alpha Strike - Got this for XMas. Paralyzed trying to decide a paint scheme. More of a painting project than anything I expect to play.
Warmachine Mk4 - Khador - Been playing a ton of this proxying with my old models. Liking the new rules enough I'll be painting up one of the new armies.
Judgement: Eternal Champions KS - Looks like its nearly here. I've been wanting to play this since 2016 or so. Very excited this one is finally going to deliver.
Rivenstone - Locals are very excited about this one. I'm a little meh on it, but I bought in and will paint some dwarves.
Monsterpocalypse KS - Might fail to deliver. Honestly, I have more than enough of this game, but I'd like this to show up and restart interest in our players.
Orks: I have a lot of Ork vehicles, Kommandos, terrain from Octarius not finished. My Warboss isn't even done yet.
I have a lot of Beast Snaggaz not put together because the guy who traded me for them couldn't be bothered to provide the flipping manual on how to put them together.
I have some un put together Death Guard stuff that I just neglected.
I have new Chaos Space Marines in a boxset not even touched, (going to get them together with my Death Guard and put them in the same army).
I have daemons unpainted.
My Ork Army needs to be given more attention and my Chaos army will be a work in progress.
Planning to finish all remaining Squig units for my 40K Orks.
Today I finished two mangler squigs which will count as Deffdreads. Pile includes 10 small Aos Squigs, 4 of these will be turned into bomb squigs, the other 6... used as unit fillers and attack squigs.
Also two Squiggoths, 3 Kromlech Killa Squigs and 3 Killa Kans. I hope to finish these, would bring my Orks over 2000points. And I'll have two painted Squiggoths.
Aside from these there are some Beasts of Nurgle and Plague Marines on the pile. Usually I only make 5 Plague Marines/ year because DG is annoying to paint. Didn't finish any last year so let's see how it goes.

I painted sporadically last year. 150~ finished. I got a new job teaching and had a hard adjustment time with painting.
- New 4x4 Table
- Traitor Guard / Renegades (10 Vehicles, 120~ infantry)
- Inquisition Force (50 infantry, 2 Aircraft)
- Biotitans, Warhound titan, some large models that might be benched to the end of the year

In fairness, it's a solid framework for this sort of thread. Would you just update the original post, or do a quoted update post from time to time?
Going back and forth wanting to retouch a lot of my old mini's but with so many still boxed I cannot do it..
This is what I would like to actually finish in season 2023. (before oldworld comes and I buy 1000 euros worth of boxes from that too to build an iglo out of I can live in in the middle of my condo)
-Fully assembled mortal Nurgle army, still unbasecoated' to which I haven't got a clue what scheme to use yet. (Was thinking grey skin with dull agapite armor, gold detail.. but test-blightking didn't look so well with that armor so still breaking my brain over it..)
-Harlequins of which 2 deathjesters, 1 solitaire and a floppy sky-speedboat.. (and 4 more dancers to do aswell..)
-HAVE TO SCULPT MY WRAITHKNIGHT HEAD (reminder to self)
-Orks orks orks (do I need to list these?) .. (ok.. ) ; 2 boxes of nobs, 2 boxes of boys, a blitzabomba, a morkanaut, a box of (30%sale) kommandoes that misses a scubagrothead (who cares) I will likely all kitbash into something else and a pack of jetpackorksiforgotnameofyouknowwhatImean.
-Have to retouch my Tyranid harpy to get it up to the level of my tyrannofex.. and maybe retouch my Toxicrene a bit because I forgot to do some of its detail.. also retouch the tongue of my Trygon prime because Its not the same hue as the other Tyranids. -_-
-Are we talking Tyranids?.. hmm.. still have to finish 10 gargoyles and 10 minespores x_x
I think that's it.. probably forgot something but ok.
Will probably fail doing half of this due to old world release.
Borrowing the template from The Newman, though tweaking one category a little...
Note - I'm just going to be tracking GW things here.

Note - this may expand as I find other WIP things I'd forgotten about, and as/when I start on things from the Pile that previously hadn't been undercoated.
Things I bought in 2023: Q1 - Eldar Bonesinger (metal)

@ Dysartes: I think I will post a quote maybe once a quartal.
But I already see things going slow this year. I hope I can finish at leat half of my pile till christmas.
Picked up a few more Battletech figures I ran across in the wild. Also it looks like Malifaux, Legion and Infinity have some updates for my armies and both Warmachine mk4 and Judgement feel like they're going to land in February. Need to wrap up those Armigers and get cracking before there's a pile to be ashamed of again.

Last year I posted a summary what I got done as I finished units and then updated my original post for overall progress. I did improve last year's format a little for 2023, I didn't separate finished models according to whether I owned the unit at the start of the year last time and I would have liked to have had that information available.
Mostly just gonna be a copy-paste of last year's pile of shame as I didn't make nearly as much progress as I wanted to, plus I picked up more stuff!
Warhammer 40k:
Over a dozen Ravenwing bikers, plus Outriders, ATVs, and vehicles. Hoping to get at least a few of these done. Might even 3D print some stuff for these since the new season is making them better.
A bunch of Deathwing Terminators. With the new Arks of Omen and the points changes these are looking real spicy!
Most of the Indomitus Space Marines. One of my main goals for the year is to finish knocking these out.
Lots of Firstborn Dark Angels. As in Tactical, Assault, and Devastator units, plus their transports. Probably won't have time for these.
Space Wolves. As in, a pretty fair sized army of them, many of which are still on sprues. Space Wolves are going bye-bye; picked up Votann and need the shelf space and I just don't have much desire to paint Wolves anymore. That'll shrink the pile of shame, at least!
Sisters of Battle vehicles. A couple of Rhinos that are basically minimal paint standard for events, plus some Mortifiers and Morvenn Vahl in the same condition. Not a huge priority currently but I might at least try to squeeze Vahl in.
Some random Sisters infantry and characters as well as some Paragon Warsuits. Low priority since most of it is not very competitive. Might make good "palette cleansers" since I can paint them quickly with Contrast paint.
The Triumph of Saint Katherine: Still bare plastic and in subassemblies; might get painted this year, might not.
2 (probably recast) Cerastus Knight-Castigators, plus a Questoris Knight still on sprues. Very low likelihood of getting worked on this year.
A bunch of Wargames Atlantic Les Grognards infantry. Low priority for now; could get bumped up if I decide I really want to play Guard (their codex seems really good!).
2 Leman Russ tanks and a Valkyrie. See above with the Grognards infantry. Might even get some 3D printed reinforcements...
Japanese-themed Drukhari proxy army. 3D printed; planning to print a bunch more for it to make it a full proper army; not sure how quick I can get it painted, my year is already pretty full as it is.
Roman-themed 3D printed AdMech army. Will need a bunch more stuff printed to actually have a full army. Not sure I'm gonna have time for it, just like the Drukhari.
Plenty of Leagues of Votann stuff, and more yet to buy. Painting them to look somewhat like the Grineer from Warframe. This is something that will likely have priority this year, as I love the models and am excited to work on them.
40k Kill Team:
The original starter set with Ork Kommandos and Death Korps of Krieg kill teams, plus Orky terrain. The Orks are primed and will be painted with Contrast and Army Painter Speedpaint and would make decent palette cleansers, other stuff may not unless a painting challenge warrants it.
Warhammer Age of Sigmar:
5k points of Stormcast Eternals. I hope to at least get some of these painted this year, but I'm unlikely to do more than that unless I get a bunch of games in and attend an AoS event (as I said, not very likely). Painted a couple of units last year, still plenty more to go.
Middle-Earth:
Minas Tirith: Started painting a few infantry last year, didn't finish them. Got plenty of infantry and heroes, plus some cavalry. I'm hoping to get at least some of this painted.
Rohan: I've got the models from the Pelennor Fields starter, but none of them are even primed at this point. I'd like to paint them, but we'll see if I have time.
Lothlorien: I've got Wood Elves, a lot of Galadhrim infantry and cavalry, and a handful of heroes (including 3 different Haldir sculpts). This is now my main Good army and will have priority over other Good armies for painting.
Khazad-dum: I really need to add a few things to this army to get it properly playable, but I do have some stuff that needs paint. Probably won't happen this year.
Mordor: Pelennor Fields stuff, plus a few reinforcements (like Warg riders). Low priority, but might get bumped up if I can get more local interest in the game going.
Easterlings: My main Evil army for this game, still have plenty of models to paint, including some Forge World stuff. I want to pick up the Dragon Emperor of Rhun and paint him, but the money might be an issue there.
Variags of Khand: I really want to paint these as allies for my Easterlings, but I may just not have time. We shall see.
Necromunda:
A fair-sized Orlock gang including vehicles. My local group wants to run a Necromunda campaign sometime this year, so these will likely get at least some paint down.
Other stuff:
Infinity: I've got the contents of the Red Veil starter set, plus the Beyond Red Veil expansion box. Low priority for painting this year.
Guildball: Kickoff box, plus a starter of the Blacksmiths' Guild team. Low priority for paint despite the fact that I think I'd have fun with the models. 2023 update: picked up the Ratcatchers and Farmers starter teams last year, so yet more to work on!
Ankh: Gods of Egypt: Picked up the Kickstarter edition at my FLGS late in 2021, plus all of the expansions. I hope to at least get started on painting the models this year, but we'll see if I can find time.
Blackstone Fortress: I still have the game kicking around, and most of the models have not yet been painted. I probably won't get around to them this year.
Star Fleet Battles: I have the heavy cruisers from most of the races, and a couple of them are partially painted. I'd like to get those finished and put some paint on more of them this year if possible.
Star Saga: Probably won't get paint this year; might actually get sold if I can find someone who wants it.
Aliens: Another Glorious Day In The Corps: Have the main game plus expansions, started painting some of the heroes last year and haven't touched it since. Might happen this year, might not.
Primal: The Awakening: Kickstarter that will hopefully be fulfilled later this year (already been delayed multiple times). If it arrives at a good time, I hope to at least start painting the models from it this year.
Godtear: The Borderlands starter set. Won this in a raffle at a 40k tournament last year; probably low priority for paint despite having some cool models.
I've cut back on the backlog a ton, but some of the big things remain
Bolt Action British Airborne- Might paint, probably won't, but might sell too. I haven't played in years and have no intention of doing so
Malifaux- I have a few crews unpainted, but the game has become so bloated I have no interest in playing and I'm cutting back what I do have
40k- Have about 2-3k ish of Eldar unpainted, should be able to knock it over but I also have to find the time/motivation
30k- Almost painted for now, but I have plans for 2 more full armies so I have to keep on top of them all and make sure the backlog doesn't get unmanageable
Malifaux is great if played within keyword these days. Most of my friends don't even try to play factions anymore. They just focus on their favorite 2-3 masters across the game.
Just finished ten Devastator marines and a Cherub, and also put basing on 15 Hormagaunts. I don't consider the unbased 'nids as Pile of Shame models because they were done as far as I was concerned and adding basing is something I decided on later. I'm just pulling a few out to base every time I finish painting something else and get the basing tools out.
On the other side I added a final Chaos Knight to the pile. I figured out how to tab-cut the elbows so this one can be fielded as any of the medium size Knights, that collection is now complete until GW releases something new.
Paint with a Vengeance is definitely a better title.
I have quite a number of toys that I need to clear out. Definitely managed to buy less than I painted last year, but I've managed to fail already this year.
I have loads to paint that I don't have with me due to travel, but here's what I have in the immediate future:
3x Aggressors - 80% complete 1x Space Marine Company Champion - 80% complete 1x Phobos Librarian - 60% complete 8x Squat Prospectors - Primed KT: Into the Dark (24 minis + Terrain!) Kroot assembled
Other Goals: Finish my Space Marines army - 19x Intercessors, 6x Phobos, 6x Inceptors, 6x Aggressors, 1x Repulsor, 2x Firestrikes, 4x Bladeguard, a slew of characters (this is a hangover from my 2021 and 22 hobby goals) Paint more than I buy - thus far, failing (2 Done vs 30+) Paint more than the previous year (2/114) Enter a painting competition Try out KT Finish my Aeronautica Eldar and Marines
I moved out of my house for a job relocation in January, and prior to that did a huge ebay spree to clear out unpainted stuff. Since I don't even have my pile of shame right now (it's chilling in a warehouse in Cleveland), I'm going to focus on the stuff I brought with me to the rental house and things I've bought since the move:
New year and a shorter list than last year. I am certain I will add some old metal at some point, looking for the metal Dark Reaper and Howling Banshee Exarchs.
To Paint List Final Stages – Base Coat Completed - Primed - Un-assembled – Still in Blister/Box/Closet/Under the Bed
Eldar– 2
Eldar Falcon
Eldar Dark Reaper Exarch
Necromunda - 40K Terrain Large - 17
Ruined Cathedral - 3
Battle Zone Nachmund -5
Imperial storage pallets - 6
Imperial test site - 1
Classic Necromunda towers - 2
I've been taking inventory again, and counting unpainting minis really does not feel good. Especially when you find stuff you have no intention of ever painting. Watching the number decease as you move them from the painted spreadsheet to the painted spreadsheet feels good though.
I started this year in December to avoid splitting a project in half. So I've got a months headstart on painting. This Year's project is my Arabs covering the early infantry armies to the later horse archers slaves. Big project, maybe I'll even have enough to field a Mortem et Gloriam army. Not sure what I'll do once they're done.
I've bought 66 more Arabs to fill in some missing units (Included above). I also bought 199 Normans and Greek Hoplites, with the excuses I'll need them someday and inflation.
Total: 265
Still in the negative so far. I should catch up soon as I've gone all in on contrast slapchop speedpainting. I was going to say I don't see myself buying any more miniatures this year, but that is a lie. One of my games is doing a new edition kickstarter soon, GW might do new Tyranids, and it looks like my club might try to get me to buy into Song of Fire and Ice like they did last year with Oathmark.
Picked up some new MCP stuff over the weekend and finished it before it could hit the pile. Back to working on some Battletech and then I just might actually work on some terrain.
Got inspired and finished up my Battletech along with some Legion bounty hunters. I've got a couple of big models left on the pile, but its mostly clear until I get slammed with 3 big batches of models coming my way.
I finished a Knight Abominant this evening, that took a long damn time.
In the meantime I added a Roadhog, Gunboar, and Razorback crew. I wasn't going to buy anymore Farrow, but PP announced they're retiring all the Mk III models and well...

On the blog I use Speed Paints to paint up some miniatures for the Hellboy Board Game that a friend gave to me. I have some thoughts on using the paints, and what they good for and not good for. Plus, their are pictures of some miniatures being painted.
Getting there... just finished a bunch of AdMech dudes as testmodels for a paint scheme. Now starting the Sicarians, Pteraxiis and the Manipulus. I aim to finish them till end of the month.

Two Iffarit Scouts and a Bone Shrine done as of yesterday, those went fast for Warmachine models. I added five Servitor kit bashes, they're basically just little grav-sleds with a brain in a jar wired on so they'll be very quick to paint once the weather permits me to prime them.
Then I got completely hammered with Kickstarter/Preorders:
- 7 MCP figures
- 5 random Infinity things
- 7 new Malifaux models
- 5 Bushido figures
- Khador starter with 25 models
- Judgement kickstarter for another 27
So.... lots of new shame. Way more than the "paint faster than I buy" I've been enjoying. Ah well, time to roll up the sleeves and starting with Judgement, which I've been eager to own/play since I first demoed it in 2016:
Kayback wrote: Somehow my 2023 pile of shame is exactly the same as my 2022 and 2021 one.
I'm quite familiar with that.
Recently, for every model/kit I finish, I seem to replace it with another.
For ex; I've knocked out 20 some random singles/small unit kits (like nurglings) from my backlog. And last night I added a new box of (20) HH MKvi marines....
Got some things done from my pile of shame.. did also buy some new shames though :')
Currently trying to get through pile of shame units by entering challenges, atleast that gets me into Orks.
I have a full Nurgle (mortal) army of AOS assembled but un-basecoated.. standing around oozing tears of pus for the neglect.
Also some harlequin stuff from 40k still to do (a starwhatever flying thing, two reaper guys and a solitaire) and some Eldar stuff (mobile weapon) but also still (STILLLLLL) have to properly finish the sculpt of my custom Wraithknight head, with the rest of the Wraithknight 100% done -_- )
So that brings me to Orks.. I have too many Orks.
2 boxes of boyz, 2 of Nobz, a box of kommandoes that I've been using to kitbash challenge units with (because some parts were missing anyway, bought it on sale because of it.) a Blitzabomba (woosh) a Morkanaut (ding dong ching chong) and a pack of stormboyz now that I think of it too..
Then I still have some Sylvaneth stuff laying around once painted in bright yellow because I wanted to make fairy tree's. :l (sigh) for like.. I think 3-4 years ignored now.
And a few Imp's from the Chaos pack..
Oh and some sisters of the ..forgot what' with those flaming bows (Aos, cities), bringing me to my latest purchase being a box of Vampire horsemen (50% off, couldn't pass it up being 50 bucks normally).
So three months into my move, I've painted up a bunch, and held off on buying more, at least until Adepticon.
Painted:
Kahl
Einhry Champion
6 Pioneer Bikes
25 Kin
20 Darkoath Savagers
Heart of Ghur Terrain
Mindstealer sphyranx
Bought at Adepticon:
10 MT Scions on Sprue
2 Unbuilt Tauroxes
25 SC Liberators
5 Judicators
3 SCE characters
Dominion box minus Vigilators, hobgrots, big character
Conquest 100 kingdoms box
So, Despite making some prgoress before adepticon, I'm back behind for the year.

2 spawn, 3 Bullgors, 1 Cygor, and 30 Tzaangor
Slaves to Darkness:
Sorcerer on Manticore, the special edition Chaos lord, 10 old resin Chosen
Soul Blight:
2 special edition vampires (both my wife and my mom got me the same model so I'm definitely painting these up in different ways!!), Radukar (both versions), a VLoZd, 3 vargheists, 10 grave guard, 10 skeletons
Slaanesh:
10 myrmadesh, 11 archers, 3 slaangor, 5 blissbarb, a shard speaker, a pain bringer, lord of hubris
Ogors:
1 cannon, assorted gits
Aeldari:
The riders for 22 bikes, 4 vipers, 1 wave serpent, ~20ish old guardians, swooping hawks, multiple warlocks, multiple farseers, wraith seers, and spirit seers
Death Guard:
1 resin demon prince, a tally man
Black Templar:
Grimaldus and Co, Helbrecht and squires, 3 Outriders,
Slaanesh and Soulblight are my 2 largest factions open to complete. I have a couple more things to buy for Slaanesh and Beasts of Chaos. Some will be used in both.
Got some new MCP coming in this week that will take priority. Until then I'm going to either finish up some Malifaux or work on the Warmachine starter.

* - WIP is defined as at least undercoated, not just built. If I tried to include the unpainted stuff, the year would be over before the survey was done...
Note - this may expand as I find other WIP things I'd forgotten about, and as/when I start on things from the Pile that previously hadn't been undercoated.
Things I bought in 2023: - Eldar Bonesinger (metal)
- Cadia Stands! (28 models?)
- Black Templar Castellan
- 3 metal Cadian Shock Troops with Meltaguns (the 3rd ed design, not the 2nd ed one)

Italics means I've ordered them, but they've not gotten to me yet...
Things I purchased in 2023, now WIP (at least undercoated) - Nothing currently
Net change to the Pile of Shame/Potential 97 bought, 35 painted, so a net of +62
Consider this a slightly delayed end of Q1 review - was trying to get the second set of 10 Plaguebearers finished before I posted, and they took longer than expected.
The fact the net figure is in the red isn't brilliant, but most of that comes down to three purchases - Cadia Stands!, the Necron CP and the Necron BP. One of those was to grab the CP from my LGS before the price rise went through, and the BP was part of getting the items I wanted from my local GW store birthday (which I'll hopefully collect this weekend).
I'm reasonably happy with how much I've completed YTD - not at the breakneck pace I've managed in previous years, but still reasonable progress. I don't foresee much - if anything - being bought before the 10th starter hits, so let's see how much of this deficit I can claw back by then...
I finished 24 Phalangites and 6 Haspists. That does run counter to my goal of finishing all the 2022 leftovers, but after having exclusively played Conquest this last month I'm seriously considering selling off all the Marines.
Edit: I dig that people keep borrowing my tracker format.
I finished up some of the Warmachine stuff and now I'm working on the new MCP. Oddly enough, I'm heading deep into the well and painting terrain for a change.

Slaanesh and Soulblight are my 2 largest factions open to complete. I have a couple more things to buy for Slaanesh and Beasts of Chaos. Some will be used in both.
I've painted up 5 myrmadish, 3 slaangors, a lord of pain, a special edition vampire, and a farseer. Also, I've painted Helbrecht and need to paint the dead Ork/base and his servitor entourage. I've done the base coats for The Grimaldus servitors.
As far as producing any actually finished minis paint wise?
As of 5/16/23 my 2023 total stands at....... 2 Battlemechs (a scorpion & an Urbanmech) and a kit-bashed spiritual Weapon spell effect token for D&D (a floating mace painted in golden hues)
I finished an Aristarch, six Minotaur Thyreans, and six stands of Hoplites, and for a glorious window of 6 hours all of my Conquest models were painted. Then some stuff I ordered arrived at the store.
one MDF robot thingy (probably a Knight proxy)
the beginning of an Admech force I hunted on Ebay:
Datasmith
1 Sydonian Dragoon
Things I bought in 2023: shame shame:
FW Gorgon heavy Transport
FW Skytalon
FW Malcador Infernus
3 Serberys Raiders
1 Technoarcheologist
1 Sly Marbo
Things I owned January 1st, 2023, 12:00 AM that are now painted:
a bunch of IG/Inquisition characters:
2 Commissars (one intended to be traded)
6 priests (3 intended to be traded but I might paint them)
1 Jokaero
1 Beastmen hero
1 Rogue Trader dude
10 Skitarii

1 Skitarii Marschal
5 Pteraxis
2 Kastelan Robots
Things I bought in 2023 that are now painted:

Now this will not last, already my gaming group has made rumblings that they will leave some unwanted models on my doorstep, but for a few days there will be nothing to paint.
It lasted a day…this morning an egg crate filled with heavily damaged and chipped paint covered Harlequins showed up at me door with the bell rung for a drop and run reverse heist.
I made the mistake of trying to do an accounting for the year, and It's made me sad. I thought I had slowed my buying down, but then I realized I bought 3500 Points of Votann army, a decent sized 100 Kingdoms army, two warcry starters, a small Stormcast army, and leviathan. And so far I've painted... well, a full Warcry starter, three sentinels, 2800 poitns of Votann, and some odds and ends.
So I've gotten a decent amount done, it's just mostly stuff I bought this year.
I'm in the same boat. Judgement and Mk4 Warmachine arrived the same week and I haven't been able to get caught up as other new releases like Shatterpoint and the need to buy the last chance Warmachine stuff filled my backlog. Definitely way behind this year and need to focus on getting it cleared out again.
Finished eight City State retinue models and a single stand of faux Agema that I didn't own last time I posted. Also got another three Agema/Thorakites amd the end of the Nords that I'm ever going to own assembled and base coated.
I also added a genuine Pile of Shame item in the form of the 'nid half of the Leviathan box, although I offset that by trading some unpainted Marines as part of the acquisition.
And those new Agemas and Thorikates done. It feels good to return to form and be painting at a respectable clip again, I went through a lull when my interest in 40k dropped off but I couldn't get my FLGS group to give Warmachine MkIV a chance. Conquest has got me re-engaged, loving that game.
So my plan to finish my Arabs didn't go well. My main ancients opponent had real life issues, and I've had a whole string of health issues and self inflected injures. I didn't get as much done as I'd have liked, and trying to get in time before I was better ended up with me cutting open both thumbs with a hobby knife.
I got talked into playing Clash of Katanas so I ended up painting 4 ashigaru, 4 Samurai, 38 bandits and a temple building. Played my first game of it a week ago and it is excellent, although my plan for 4 armies is in retrospect a bit much.
Unfortunately I've been spending a lot this year on miniatures. I've gone for 3 kickstarters, luckily only Bad Squiddo's vampires have come to be added to my pile of shame. I'm also back into 40k, expanding my Tyranids, as well as more Samurai. At about 1:2 paint:buy and will get worse when more Tyranids come out as I failed to produce a contrast version of my old paint scheme. Didn't count the SM half, since I don't intend to paint them.
Currently I've been assembling my two lots of Leviathan Tyranids.
Chipping right along through the Nords, although the block of Valkyries is going to take longer. Four stands, so 16 individuals to paint.
After getting some tournament play in there's a pretty good chance I'm going to invest in another big brick of Hoplites though. I've seen how good they can be when properly supported and having duplicate units gives you more flexibility in your activation order in Conquest.
Time to level set. Things have gotten a little out of hand again, in part because I've made some bad choices, also in part because my old store collapsed and priorities have shifted and PP discontinued their stuff and also new Zelda and Final Fantasy and Street Fighter have all been incredible.
Excuses aside, here's the problem and the priorities:
Alright, so the Bushido stuff just needs some highlights and I'll be all set there. The Legion stuff is kind of stuck in preorder limbo and frankly I should just cancel and not worry about, but Dark Troopers are super cool and should take minutes to paint. Picked up the new Bakkunin stuff, which probably wasn't wise, kind of have it on the backburner right in front of the Warmachine stuff which just... I need to walk away from that for a bit and come back later.
So that leaves the new 40k purchases and I'm going to do the stupid while I have the motivation and paint an Ork army. I've always wanted one; 10th edition is really fun, a lot of my friends are trying it out, the shops in town are making it the only game to play easily. It's a terrible idea, but its something I've long wanted, so..... 'Ere We Goooooo!
Does anyone else suffer from a thought process that proceeds as "Right, base coat and a few bits done on these few minis.. that now justifies me buying a massive pile of new stuff"
I have just started seriously on the ASOIAF Stark v Lannister set, only a 100 or so minis to go!
Pacific wrote: Does anyone else suffer from a thought process that proceeds as "Right, base coat and a few bits done on these few minis.. that now justifies me buying a massive pile of new stuff"
Good God, no.
What justifies buying new stuff is that I want to play with it.
How much paint is on it is irrelevant.
Definitely been bad about that. I committed myself to doing better and its helped, but once I got behind again the fear of adding more to the pile has made it easy to make some bad choices.
On that note, Progress!!?
So I finished up the Bushido and chipped at the Warmachine and Infinity piles. Got a few more Orks as well putting me overall up, but I've started to make great strides on those Orks:
The green robots are some extra cogs I sculpted since I wanted to spice up a bit of the army. The big one in particular is supposed to be a recon robot.
The plan is building and painting box by box with the exception of the bases which will all be done in one swoop.
Finished two more Armigers this morning. It only marks the half-way point of the Knight collection in total, but it does complete the initial Lance that I started out with.
I've added a big pile of Conquest stuff though. City States very much want to field two big Hoplite bricks, and now I can do that. Might regret it when there are more options. Might not.
In the past 12 weeks, I've finished painting 200+ figures, all for 25mm-28mm fantasy gaming. I'm down to <100 figures in my unpainted pile. Actually, I believe it is <50. I have 1,000+ in the finished, ready for the tabletop category.
I am a dyed-in-the-wool, Dip'er, brushing it on, to save time and effort. I love fielding multiple fantasy armies for my friends to play with. My last big game was more than a year ago. I fielded around 800 figures from my collection, and a friend put out around 200 of his figures for the game. It was played out on two tables, total length of around 17 feet; the width was 5.5 feet for the primary table, while the extension table was only 4 feet wide. I ref'd, as we had a full 10 players, pushing miniatures across the tables. It was GLORIOUS fun!
The rules were 2e BattleSystem, OOP since 1994? The scenario was pulled from my 2e AD&D RPG game sessions. Only three of the players were from my RPG games, the other seven were just looking to play a fantasy mass battles game, with oodles of miniatures and terrain. Everyone asked to be invited back to the next game. It was fun...
I began painting using simple block techniques. I followed that up with a black paint wash, which I sealed with a matte clear coat. Then I learned of The Dip Technique. I tried it, and I've been using it ever since, back in 1996.
I recently watched a video from Wyloch's Armory, on YouTube, where he demonstrated Speed Paints 2.0. His results were impressive. I wrote asking him if he could compare SP 2.0 results with The Dip Technique. I shared with him that I used assembly line painting techniques for block painting, followed by The Dip Technique (I use Magic Wash, as well, but far less often), averaging 10 minutes of brush time, per figure. If he has done The Dip Technique, how does it compare? I told him that if he is not familiar with The Dip Technique, it is not worth his time to respond...
Wyloch told me he was a HUGE Dip'er! Until he tried the SP 2.0: He reduced his average brush time, per figure, from 15 minutes, to 2 minutes! He said the results were incredibly better than The Dip Technique!
If I were just starting out... I would use SP 2.0, ignoring The Dip Technique, and Magic Wash, altogether. Problem is, I already have around 1,200 figures painted with The Dip Technique, and Magic Wash, and any figures painted with SP 2.0, would put them to shame, if on the tabletop, side by side. I will finish my figures with The Dip Technique, even though it will take five times longer to finish each figure. At least they will all look consistently painted, across the tabletop.
SP 2.0 requires white primer. Then brush on your colors, and let the SP do the work for you. He gushed about how good they are, how fast they are, how simple they are, to use to achieve superior results that really blow away Dip'd figures. He had no reason to lie: he was not paid to promote the SP 2.0 paints; he is like me, he had no desire to improve his painting skills one iota; he had Dip'd hundreds of figures, previously, and the SP 2.0 product was so much better, in every way.
Playing fantasy, I expect my armies to be grungy, looking like they've been in a fight, in the dirt and mud -- they're in the battlefield, fighting, not prancing across a parade ground to impress the opposite genders! The Dip Technique gives the results I expect.
I view my figures, 98% of the time, at arm's length, or farther. I paint for the 98%, not the 2%. On my table, they look impressive, they're fun and enjoyed by all players who push them across the tabletop. I consider them to be winners.
If you want to make your Pile of Shame disappear, quickly, and easily, I heartily recommend Speed Paints 2.0. Otherwise, simple block painting, assembly line style, followed by The Dip Technique, and a matte clear coat, is the way to push them out to your tabletop, ready for battle. Minwax Tudor (black) is the most recommended color, but I prefer Royal Walnut (dark brown), if I can find it. Cheers!
Vampires:
VLoZD, 1 special edition Vampire, 3 vargeists, 10 dogs
Slaves:
1 special edition Chaos Lord Helga, a lord/wizard on a manticore, and I need to get some touch ups on 10 marauders, 10 warriors, 5 knights, and a karkadrak.
Heresy Era Dark Angels:
10 plasma guns, 1 spartan, 10 cataphractii, 5 Tartarus, 1 Sicaran to touch up
Picked up the remaining Orks I need for 2000 now that the balance pass has arrived. Also finished AC6 so I should be able to actually focus on painting again.
Finished my last 14 Space Marines. Technically that finishes the Marine collection because Servitors are out of the codex and the five of those I own constitute a very small AdMech collection or something.
Finished a Knight Tyrant, bought up the last release wave of City States for the year; an Eidolon, six Inquisitors, and 12 stands of Satyrs. There's a non-zero chance that I get all the CS done before January 1. Anything past that is a question mark.
Finished off a Chimera and a bunch of Titanforge Amazons. Currently working on a Knight sized toy robot. Well... progress but to be honest the pile of shame mostly just shifted shape instead of shrinking
Spoiler:
Things I owned January 1st, 2023, unpainted:

Just batch painted my way through my last 110 renegade infantry. Somehow, it didn't feel like a chore. "Only" basing left to do before they are finished:
Last of my Ork infantry complete and the Malifaux Hex Bows for good measure.
Going to quickly paint up some Legion Death Troopers just to drive down the pile a bit and then get my Mk4 Khador ready now that Warmachine has some renewed hype coming down the pipe.
After that? Back to Orks. Got to paint up the vehicles and mounted stuff next. Should have them done in time for the errata to make my list illegal. :-D
Finished all six stands of Satyroi. Decided after the first three that I didn't like some of the shields, so I replaced all of that type in the second batch and shuffled them around a bit.
Also traded those Valks away to offset the cost of buying the CS half of the two-player starter set from a guy just buying in to Conquest, so I added some more Thyreans and Phalangites.
Finished up my Legion stuff and painted up enough of my Mk4 Khador to play most anything I want until the balance pass in January. Working on some backlog items and new Judgement releases at the moment. Bit of terrain too.
Continuing to make progress on my City States, but I burned up a huge pile of store credit on picking up a Dweghom army to kick off next year's Pile of Shame.
Finished a lot of smaller bits and bops. Doesn't look too bad any more.

Nice to hear that people are still painting Warmachine/Hordes models, that system is completely dead at my LGS.
The closest place that I know it's active isn't that much further away, but their hours really don't work with my schedule.
For my part I've finished the end of my Inquisitors and Phalangites, leaving just one more block of Minotaurs to finish out my City States for the year. I picked up a big pile of Dwegholm because the Black Friday sale was too good to pass up. I kind of want to wait to add that to the Pile of Shame until 2024 since it's so close to the end of the year and I'd have waited without that sale, but that a seems a littile disingenuous.
I've managed to smash most of my backlog out of the way the past few months, but there's a few things sitting in the pile I've not touched (and probably will continue not to until at least a few months away).
Warmachine- The better part of my Blindwater army from almost a decade ago still has no paint, and as I'm not interested in playing the game at all at this point I'm not really inclined to paint them. Maybe at some stage as a little hobby project, but unlikely
40k- 2 Wave Serpents, a FW Nightwing and 10 each of Striking Scorpions, Dire Avengers and Howling Banshees. I'll get them done, they're just not a priority and I lose motivation every time they hit the desk and go back away into the box
WHFB Dark Elves- Goal is to have them done before Old World, but we'll see when I get around to them
WHFB Khorne Warriors- Waiting fully on Old World, these guys are gonna be the only army I put on new bases because 40 unpainted minis is far more realistic than rebasing 300 painted minis
Malifaux- A couple of the limited edition crews still sitting around unpainted, but the game is all but dead to me and my local group so there's no reason to paint them right now. Same as Warmachine, dead game locally that would be a nice fun project, but I tend to paint to play
On another note, I've managed to finish a few army projects off this year so I'm clearing the backlog, just not in every way
Bolt Action- One of the projects I've let sit for a few years, happy to finally get it all fully painted and complete
30k- I've gone deep, with 3000 points of Knights, Blood Angels and Sisters of Silence all fully painted plus a Warhound and tons of expansion for my Dark Angels
Currently on my painting table, I have a lot of Slaanesh. I'm painting 22 archers, 5 myrmadish, 5 dudes on steeds, and 2 characters. Finished are 3 slaangor, a character, 11 archers, 20 demonettes, and 5 hellriders.
I've got 11 more archers and a keeper of secrets to assemble and paint. I still need to add a couple of items: terrain piece, spells, 3 fiends, and some chariots.
KoW Northern Alliance army:
* Assorted 1980s Dwarf minis, mostly with 1980s era paint jobs so at least needing a wash or two... DONE enough for at least one unit.
* Blood Rage minis to be my main human forces. Mostly primed, some painting done. DONE one unit and most of a second.
I hit a bit of a sculpting wall on this but will get back to it soon -- have decided to abandon the original work and start converting a new, different, better toy...
ALL NEW AND BLUE AND FREE FOR TWENTY-THREE:-
More Northern Alliance bits -- two units of ice elementals and one of snow foxes DONE
Terrain scratchbuilds -- I really want to make a big-ass oil rig thing for SF skirmish and narrative gaming PARTLY DONE -- some painting needed
28mm scale converted toy spaceships -- got at least 5 or 6 of these that want painting and probably mild conversion DONE two
My next army for F28: War Always Changes will be a Thunder Warriors & Imperial Army, Unification Wars era force. I'd like a 1200 point force painted by year's end. LOL I think I'll call that a 2024 project instead
My sister in law brought me a Target supermarket exclusive box of Btech, and by God that I'm going to finish my Davion Crucis Lancers lance before 2023 is over!
Finished a Knight Tyrant and two War Dogs, and with that I've completed everything that I had at the start of the year. I may not have defeated The Pile of Shame, but I think I fought it to a draw.
Interestingly (from my perspective anyway) I updated my original post on page 1 a total of 45 times this year. I finished something and failed to update that post twice that I'm aware of, that means I only went a week without finishing a unit 5 times over the entire year. That ain't bad.
Dysartes wrote: Looking ahead, can I suggest "A Good Day to Paint Hard" for inclusion in a theoretical 2024 thread title?
Or "A New Hope", I guess.
I was going to suggest "The Pile that Never Ends" but I don't know that I want to be responsible of people getting that song stuck in their heads for 12 straight months.
"Pile of Shame: the Morning After"
"2024: Return of the Pile of Shame"
"Citizens on Paint Patrol"
Well, I kind of failed on the year to keep my pile near zero. I was basically down to one model I planned to sell, but then Judgement and Mk4 Warmachine hit about the same time our FLGS shut down and everything kind of shifted around and now I've got a sizeable backlog again. A lot of purchases needed at the time that I haven't been able to keep up on plus a couple questionable buys I probably could have skipped. Hoping I can whittle things back down soon but that's for a 2024 thread!
