Welcome all to the 99th round of the Dakka Painting challenge. For the unfamiliar, this is a friendly painting competition open to members of all skill levels and experience, whether your entry is your first or you thousand-and-first time painting miniatures. Each month, finished entries are collected into a thread where the community can vote on their favorite pieces, and those votes go towards an annual overall League that runs for 12 rounds.
This month, Mistakes Were Made: Many times people are in a bad situation, often due to their own poor choices. They made a bad call, signed up for the wrong job, read the map wrong and ended up at wrong battlefield. Really Very Regrettable Life Choices. Your entry should be in the wrong place, at the wrong time, or otherwise in over their head in trouble.
How To Enter
- You may enter up to 5 MODELS as a SINGLE ENTRY, and are permitted one entry per member per month. If you enter multiple models, they should ideally be related in some way, such as part of the same squad, unit or scene if you are doing a diorama
- You may enter at any time during the month, up to the last minute. We do encourage people to enter early, as to be part of the community, but if you can’t start until the 11th hour, that’s OK.
- You MUST post a 'proof' picture of your entry in the thread of the state it was in before you started working on it; this must be either unassembled, unpainted, primed or coated a single colour. Entries that do not submit a valid Proof Picture will not be eligible for voting.
- After this, you may post WIP pictures in this thread and your own if you wish, and on completing the entry, you may post up to 6 final pictures IN THIS THREAD that will then be used for voting. Please note that pictures in a montage or collage picture will be considered individual images for this purpose, so while these types of presentation are certainly acceptable, please keep the image limit in mind when compiling them. For example, a collage of 5 images and one separate image would count as your 6 picture allowance.
So What Do I Win?
- Points... and points mean... bragging rights for the next month! Following the vote, points will be awarded to every entrant. This year, the Points you receive will be equal to the Percentage of Votes your entry receives in the final Voting thread; if you get 10%, you get 10 points, if you get 6% you get 6 points, so on and so forth.
These points will be used to form a league table, which will be updated month on month as the results come in.
How Long Do I Have?
This challenge begins 1st of May and will end at midnight EST on April 31th. After this, I shall compile the finished entries into a new thread, and voting will run for 5 days.
"No, Steven. I don't think we should strain our budget with extra safety measures for the reinforced and suspiciously unlabeled container. We hire the cheapest contractor like we always do." - Consuela Alba, senior logistics manager at Cranway Consumer Goods, Limited

So I bet you are wondering how we got in this situation…
These guys were almost the squad I painted up to go with the lictor earlier, but from a game play POV I wanted the las fusils for including in lists. When your snipers have their pistols out and the sarge is screaming for backup you know something has gone wrong. Also, whenever you are in charge range of a swarmlord.
So I had a really good idea for this, but it's the one I'm planning on doing next month as 'celebration', because to you and me it may look like an abomination but that's exactly what my Slaaneshis were hoping would happen, so... Anyway.
Backup plan: nobody, not even the most depraved worshipper of Slaanesh, wants to wind up a chaos spawn, right?
(Spoiler warning, this one did actually want to wind up a chaos spawn. Look these characters just turn up unannounced in my head, I'm not responsible for them.)
A peasant from a small and well defended village finds more than he bargained for on his travels.
Perhaps he should have heeded the warnings of his fellow villagers, that some malignant presence had only recently been spotted….amidst piles of corpses contorted into ghastly sculpts… alas, this brave adventurer fell foul of his own steely resolve, and now contemplates his error to the symphony of his own cracking bones!
These guys are the result of so many mistakes. By Richard Cameron, by Kerensky, by Amaris, by the IS noble houses, by Kerensky again, by a bunch of other grumpy guys, by another Kerensky, by Comstar, und so weiter.
Conveniently they also represent the bulk of my remaining unpainted mechs… funny how that works
Right. On many levels, Mistakes were Made fits these guys a little too well:
4 from the rest of my first set of Rashaar/ Cult of Dagon. A mistake for me because I REALLY don't need a 3rd faction for Carnevale.
A mistake for anyone who thinks they're just a nice, friendly church and not a cult of a great old one.
Oh, and mistake for them because they're summoning this bad boy:
The Morgraur. It's a big 'un.
Alright, it's finally time. I'm entering the first Primarch I will have painted in about 6 years, Lion El'jonson of the Dark Angels. Proof pic:
He fits the theme because he made some mistakes, most notably sending Luther home to Caliban without any oversight or even a quick check-in, resulting in Caliban's destruction and Lion himself ending up in a 10,000 year coma. But now, HE'S BACK BABY!
Another small way he might fit the theme is if you believe that the Emperor made a mistake when he chose Horus over the Lion to be Warmaster. The Imperium's history might have been very different if the Lion took over the Crusade. But I guess we'll never know.
Edit: and if you're wondering why I glued the model together, I didn't. The shield and backpack are held on by friction right now, and he balances well on the base even without glue. I'll pull it all apart for painting, I'm not a total masochist!
Hey guys, for my entry I will make a marker unit because I am kindof out of spare bodies other than a few peons from the Garganth boxes.. so I thought of some options and decided to do a bolting horse with a peon, but to stick to the theme there has to be a little story to what the flip is goin on' so here you go;
Phonzo the cursed is a page of sir Tarosso, an atleast five hundred times recast knight of Sigmar who always at the failings of Phonzo ends up dented dead.. but.. because he is too proud he refuses to acknowledge that his page is such a mess-up and just takes the loss again and again.. to hope lessening the times Phonzo causes problems he has allowed his page to wear some of the finest Sigmarite armor, albeit only as much as Phonzo can carry without dieing of exhaustion from the weight begin with.
Phonzo himself for some reason, has yet to fall even once.. (naturally, being fatal to his existence being just a peon.) landing his curse onto Tarosso's fate for evermore.
Now, the scenario depicted in this marker unit may hopefully be Phonzo's kicker..sparing Sigmar hundreds more of the hassle of having to recast Tarosso. WE SHALL SEE!
-
Phonzo was accompanying (obviously) Tarosso who had just polished his entire armor to look the part doing some diplomacy with the revenants of the Sylvaneth, Tarosso sitting on his horse one of the finest breeds, noticed that up ahead the road was overrun with brambles, thicker than usual.. likely a sign of entering Sylvaneth territory..
"hmm! impedimentis obstructionatum preventoranum!!" Tarosso exclaimed, expressing the concern to progress..
Phonzo raised his hand and stated "My sir knight! Let me do awayeth with these brambleses so that for onceth we maketh and completeth our questh..eth.."
Tarosso raised his vizor and declared proudly.. "Which with shall thou do this deed? Page Phonzo!"
Phonzo felt acknowledged and in his enthousiasm grabbed on to Tarosso's crossbow dangling from a strap beside his steed.. prepared to shoot away the brambles with atleast a thousand bolts required. "With your blessings! Sir Taros.." *SWHINGGGK*
The crossbow went off from its single loaded bolt hitting Tarosso's steed in its thigh, the creature rushed straight into the brambles tearing Tarosso clean in half while Phonzo' was entangled into the strap, pulled along after it..
"Phonzoooooo..." Tarosso's disembowled torso whailed as Phonzo disappeared into the distance, attached to his horse..
Tarosso's horse galopped in a panic past numerous suprised revenants until finally bolting at Drycha's clearing.. throwing Phonzo forward screaming..
Where did Phonzo land? Would he ..still ..be alive? (sigh!), did Sigmar break another soul forge in frustration for having to once again reforge Tarosso?
Do Revenants eat horses?
These are the questions one must ask.. or perhaps doesn't care to ask..
Perhaps.. it would be better to forget about Phonzo..
But for those who cannot!.. Phonzo being thrown off Tarosso's horse can function as a marker to games looking to reveal Phonzo's fate.. dead or alive.
Every once in a while, I look into the Closet of Shame, and realize that I will never live long enough to paint everything I have. Twice a year, usually while my wife and son are off visiting her family, I purge some of the backlog. While it is nice to have the closet a little emptier and a lot cleaner, I invariably regret getting rid of things. My worst regret, my biggest mistake if you will, was my box of Chaos Dwarf Renegades. I sold them for a pretty good sum (normally I just give stuff away), but no amount of money can fill the spiky, dwarf-shaped hole in my heart. I eventually caved and started picking them back up off of Ebay, but it's not the same.
For this month's challenge, I will be painting these dudes:
I've finally got a bit of time to paint again (at last!). I think I'm going to enter 30k marines this month.
I'm writing a story about a group of pre-heresy-era marines (one from each legion) who were stuck together on a ship (an imperial dauntless light cruiser) and sent off into the cosmos as a publicity stunt. One thing leads to another and suddenly they're drifting, alone, through an extremely hostile galaxy, trying desperately to survive.
It's a project I started a few years ago, using the mkiii and mkiv kits. I've kitbashed each character with forgeworld bits and other modifications to individualise them. I'm also intending to do characters from the crew and army contingent on board the ship (I've got navy breachers, guard, and I'm attempting to kitbash the ship's Commodore, Lieutenant Commander, sub-lieutenant deck crew, and iterators/remembrancers along for the ride, as well as a few other outside characters), but I'll most likely stick to marines for this entry.
The proof photo is below, obviously the ones I've started painting won't be entered. I've ringed the ones that have only been primed, which will be Imperial Fists, Iron Warriors, Alpha Legion, Iron Hands, Space Wolves, Death Guard and Salamanders. I'll select whichever ones I think are best from the ones I manage to get done. The ones in bags aren't built yet (and there are a couple more I'm waiting for the bits for). If I get any of those built and decide to enter them instead, I'll post additional proof pics first.
And yes, that is a Luna Wolves marine on the front row. Unfortunately I've mostly finished him previously, so he won't be entered...
Tricky theme this month. I have this ork pilot model I've been meaning to make diorama with. I figure if an ork pilot has boots on the ground, then something has gone terribly wrong. If I'm lucky and have time, I'll have the full diorama.
For this month I have 4 blade guard from the Indomitus box. I'm counting the guy with the standard because I think he is a bladeguard as well right? I've primed them with gold spray.
How does this fit in with mistakes were made? Well, as you can see, in one of the moves the spikes on the standard suffered some sort of wiggling event. Not sure what happened there. But I'm running with it.
It's also been 3 years since I meant to paint them so that's a mistake too.
Nice story Leopold Helveine and a great model choice
I'm going to do some sort of Ork Stormboyz Tyranid Gargoyles Conversion as a nod to Inquisitor Kryptman's decision to direct Hive Fleet Leviathan into the Octarius Ork Empire which became such a good fight Ghazghkull joined in .
The obvious answer is to wait until a day before the deadline, slap a quick and dirty paintjob on literally anything and regret it the moment you post the finished picture. Perfectly in theme.

Heheh thanks!!
(on the pic forgot to replace his axe with the story-featured crossbow (now fixed though!))
Still not 100% certain what hue the horse will be, am a bit 50/50 on either white or red.
Anyway, will the mistakes be made on the Ork end that have been assimilated into Tyranid ranks or are the mistakes made by the Tyranids having given angry spores the abillity to fly like a rabid bat?

I hear you. Lining those tanks can be a PITA. I’ve done mine with either a micropen or with a fine brush and ink. But I blackline, so a bit more options. Worth it though.
Did you grab a proof pic? Just a reminder that all entries need to be started in the month. Great work.

I knew I forgot something. No, I didn´t take any before or even during pics... Sorry.
I made a good bit of progress on the Bladeguard yesterday, still quite a long way to go before I'm happy. I have to go back to some shading on the armour, still have the powerswords to do and lots of bits of detail. I'm trying to think up something extra fancy for the bases. I tell you what, plenty of mistakes have been made while doing the painting
Progress continues on The Lion:
Green cloak is done, but the lion pelt kind of needs something, like maybe another drybrush. Gonna have to be careful so I don't ruin the green I've already got where I want it.
Mistakes were made...for one thing, I haven't painted a single model since December, so this will probably come out pretty damned rough.
Spoiler:
Also a mistake - an Ork taking a shortcut to power by having themselves hard wired into a giant killing machine, only to learn that the downside is that they are now hard wired into a giant killing machine.
Expect tabletop quality at best, I took the photo last week and have since primed it (and the not pictured weapons), but other than that am starting out tonight.
My procrastination is on track. Got the purple down and tidied up on the swarmlord, base down for the marine’s whites. Ton more to do for the snipers, swarmlord has a lot fewer steps.
Mistakes Were Made: Once upon a time, there existed a game called Super Dungeon Explore. The manufacturer's range contained some sweet models - in fact, to this day, I consider their miniatures the gold standard for chibi minis in terms of art direction and proportions. They delivered two wildly successful Kickstarters, the 2nd of which this model is from.
Their mistake: Then they proceeded to fail spectacularly on their last Super Dungeon Legends Kickstarter (among other Kickstarters and other commitments)... My mistake: I backed that Kickstarter. Caveat emptor indeed.
Now: Seven years later: This Kickstarter will never fulfill. Much good will was squandered. Much money was lost. Many backers were disappointed.
I'm in. My first mistake is probably trying to paint anything on a deadline in May; it's perennially as busy a month for me as December is.
This fellow's mistakes began generations before he was born when a distant relative allowed themselves to be kidnapped by a four-armed purple alien.
Now he toils in the mines for the emperor. A second mistake occurred when he lost his left arm from the elbow down in a heinous industrial accident (the local Mechanicus were more than happy to offer a bionic replacement). He now uses it to cradle his one true love, the double barrel shotgun that he mistakenly believes will deliver him from Imperial tyranny. More mistakes will undoubtedly be made as he tries to tangle with the Emperor's finest.
Now I know I always go 'oh careful this mini's NSFW' and we all have a chuckle about how I've inexpertly dabbed some paint on a daemonette's boob to pretend there's a nipple there, but I'M NOT GODDAMN JOKING THIS TIME, it's on you if you click the spoiler.
Spoiler:
So clearly many mistakes were made (including, as always, not being thorough enough in getting rid of mould lines), but the specific one here is that Misericordia, then a member of a particularly zealous minor order of the Sisters Hospitalier that taught that all things are part of the Emperor's plan, felt such deep shame at being angry at those who harmed the Sisters who ended up in her care - since even if the perpetrators were horrible xenos scum, the Emperor made them so and it wasn't for her to be angry at His divine plan - that she spent every spare hour praying to be purified of cruel thoughts. Technically she got what she wanted, in that Sylelle - in one of her whimsical moods - turned her into this, and what's left of Misericordia is having a wonderful time infecting every hapless victim she'd herded towards with her virulently contagious mutagen-laden bodily fluids, because it feels so good that [i]not[i] sharing it would be cruel.
In all seriousness, that’s actually a much better representation of how weird and abhorrent daemons are supposed to be than a lot of the official stuff.
Newbee here, hoping to get a few mini's painted and ready for the new edition, I have been thinking off giving painting/playing a go for a few years and finally bit the bullet.
I got this guy off ebay, the previous owner made a nice job painting him..... but sadly they made a mistake and painted him blue (yeah I know right?!)
Never fear though, some lovely dark green paint will redeem this captain and all will be forgiven and he can take his place among the angels.
I managed to get his head off (I haven't painted any faces yet so I was just going to stick a helm on)
I was about to stick a fancy one on with wings on the sides but noticed he has one hanging on his belt, two helms seems a little extravagant, even for a captain.
I looked through the little bundle of dark angels bits I got for some conversions and found a hooded one which I think fits.
Some before photo's and some when primed ready to go.
Well I haven't been banned from Dakkadakka, so that's good.
Boringstuff wrote: That reminds me of the Kingdom Death Monster Lion God model - "inspiration" or happenstance?
Just coincidence, I hadn't seen that until I looked it up just now. The neck tentacle idea just arose organically (pardon the pun) from laying out a bunch of maybe-use-this odds and ends from the bits box and seeing where inspiration struck: I was originally going to attach a gentleman's part (because Slaanesh would) but the Spawn's hunched-over pose wasn't conducive to that, but the gentleman's part came from the same statue kit as a couple of lady parts, and I'm saving the au naturel one for a Keeper of Secrets but there was a variant with a battery-operated whatsit protruding, and it occurred to me that I could file the end of that flat and match it to one of the random tentacles from the Spawn set, and stick her head on the end like that critter from John Carpenter's The Thing.

Yes it looks to me that for one the detail on Phonzo (the peon) isn't very clear, and a lot of work has been put into the base which also falls flat on my picture..
I'm going to experiment a bit with different theme settings on my camera and see if that improves things, while trying to get the camera in closer too.. I made these pics from further away because my camera's up-close quality is generally bad (its a zoom camera :/) and I do have a super-macro camera (on batteries go figure) aswell.. but that one's pretty old.. I'll test that one too I guess.
Usually pictures ruin the impression of my work.
Anyway, kind regards. I'll probably replace the images in my entry tomorrow or soon enough.
So I have been lacking in time, motivation and inspiration so far this month, but I finally figured out something that fits the theme and I can complete in the few days I have before I’m away for the rest of the month; sometimes mistakes are made and there’s only one way to fix them for sure:
Automatically Appended Next Post: And a few hours later, time to end the mistake, sanction extremis!
"An intriguing example of the goblin's idiotic enthusiasm for battle is their so-called "magic mud attack". Goblins claim to have discovered a certain type of "magic mud"- black and thick, that caught fire with the lightest spark. I assumed this to be some type of foul pitch. They presumably realized they could reproduce our 'flaming arrows' attack by dipping their projectiles in the stuff. It is not difficult to see how their twisted logic progresses from there; if arrows can be dipped in pitch and ignited how much better it would be to dip an entire goblin and ignite it. An individual covered in the substance and set alight certainly gives opponents pause." Kuni Mokuna (Shadowlands Army Expansion, p5)
Lion is coming together, slower than I'd like but I'm not going to rush a model like this. Here's the latest WIP shot:
Still plenty left to do, but he's coming together.
The Morgraur arises!
Summoned by Dagon's church, it crashes its way through Venice, consuming all, heedless of friend or foe.
This thing is massive, and was a lot work to build, pin and fill, but well worth it.
I also enjoyed making it... sticky. And compared to other folk, it's hardly nsfw at all If (and it's a big if) I have time I will do its rather hapless handler (he regularly gets eaten in game) and maybe a couple of other Rashaar, but as it stands, I'm happy to call it done. I might take a scale shot as well?
Bits have arrived and been used for more lost legionary characters... I've ended up painting the newly created conversions before the old ones, so I'll post proof pics for the ones I've done now. They're nearly fully painted and I'll upload pics soon... Still not sure which ones I'll be entering. At the moment, it looks like Night Lords, White Scars, Salamanders, Iron Hands and one other, but that could change in the next few days.
@Nevelon - that's a great looking Tyrant! Are you looking forward to the new nids? I think the screamer killer in particular looks great
@youwashock - really nice looking head! The skin tones are great and the shading on the hair is really nicely done, too!
The obvious answer is to wait until a day before the deadline, slap a quick and dirty paintjob on literally anything and regret it the moment you post the finished picture. Perfectly in theme.
Depending how quick the postman is I might actually be doing exactly this but with the perfect mini for this theme. One of Warmonger’s finest. Can’t wait.
All done. I'll put the photos in the spoilers, because there are a few.
Poor Ork pilot; he has landed on a bounty of free fuel and his aircraft is a burning wreck on the horizon. Some brave or foolish Orks thought they could race ahead of encroaching Tyranid invasion and steal all the abandoned loot. This luckless pilot thought he could push back their forward line and score some easy kills before being shot down. No worries, he just needs to convince when of his buddies to come down here. He'll share some fuel and they can 'share' their ride. Unfortunately the Tyranids are starting to show up. Hopefully that ride comes soon...
Keep up the good work everyone! Still have about a week left to go.
@Canceledapocalypse - Thanks. I like how he turned out. Swarmlords: for all your stabbing needs! I am looking forward to the new nids (and the marine half of the box) From the bug side I like the floating brain best. The SK is cool, but I think it’s trying too hard to walk in both the new aesthetics and the classic old school wrecking ball. And by trying to do both, falls a little short. He’ll still have a spot of love in the swarm though.
@Mr Nobody - Love what you’ve done with the nids! Ork is not bad either, but I wear my bias openly. Rooting for the little biters here. You do have 8 pics here. Would you mind trimming it down to 6 to meet with the guidlines? One problem we have to deal with when we have multiple models with so many cool details is to try to winnow down the number of pictures. Tossing a link for people who want to see more is great, but for the vote thread we need to keep it down to a reasonable level.

On to basing myself. Next up is flock, and the decals for the marines. Gaunts are just visiting as a side project. Trying to cycle as many of them across the workbench as I can before the new wave spawns.
Ok, finished photos. Everything pictured was done this month; I decided I wanted a bit more of a narrative to it, and a lone Shipwright taking on a mighty Morgraur single handed seems fitting - plus the way Carnevale has inadvertently taken over my hobby life is certainly a mistake on my part Also, a literal mistake was made as I originally mounted the Shipwright on a 30 rather than 40mm base Rest of the pics in the spoiler block
Spoiler:
In terms of "up to 5 things" it's really just the Morgraur and the Shipwright but I suppose you could consider "streets", "jetties" and "debris" as the 3 other.
At long last, he has returned to once again lead his sons into battle. May I present Lion El'jonson, the returned Primarch of the Dark Angels:
As far as fitting this month's theme about mistakes being made, he fits it in multiple ways as I said when I posted my proof. He himself made the mistake of leaving Luther unattended on Caliban (after harshly chastising him, too) while he went out with most of his Legion to deal with his traitorous brothers and their minions. That didn't end well for him or Caliban and is why he's just now coming back. The Emperor possibly made the mistake of elevating Horus to the rank of Warmaster instead of Lion; who knows what might have happened if their roles were reversed (maybe everything would have gone well, maybe we would have had the Lion Heresy instead, we'll never know). Leman Russ made the mistake of starting a fistfight with Lion, and got himself knocked out for his trouble (rumors of a cheap shot by Lion are most likely propaganda spread by the Wolves...). And finally Angron made the mistake of underestimating the Lion and got his red a** banished back to the Warp. Plenty of mistakes have been made around this guy!
I had probably more fun painting this model than any other before, and not least because I've been waiting for this almost as long as I've been playing 40k. I'm very happy with how he turned out (indeed, my photography skills do not do the model justice), and consider him possibly my best work to date. In some ways I'm glad GW waited until now to release him, as it has given my skills time to grow to the point where I can actually do a good job on a model like this.
Lots of other great entries coming in as well. One more week to go, so y'all better get to it if you haven't finished yet!
Running out of month folks. Don’t let the mistake being made be missing the deadline!
--
Finished up these guys. Those poor snipers are regretting every life choice that got them to where they are currently. And wondering where their backup support is. (Hint: they were eaten by a lictor back in February)
Swarmlord went pretty quick. Normal big monster scheme. He’s the 3rd tyrant kit I built. One winged, on on foot, both magnetized. Decided just to glue SL here. You can do more dynamic things when you don’t need to worry about compatibility.
The Eliminators were built from scraps. The kit gives you tons of extra guns, you just need some bodies to build them. So these guys were born from extra phobos marines, one an ETB. Which is why none of them are pointing their rifles; those bodies/guns were used elsewhere. These are the last of my arctic camo marines, at least until I pick up the new Lt. in the leviathan box.
But not the last of sneaky gits in snow, as next month I’ll be painting up some eldar rangers.
Here is my proof for the mini I've done this month.
First time I've posted in this forum in a long, long while. And the first time I've picked up a brush in a similar while.
So this model will fit the theme "Mistakes were made" as I bravely attempt to make a synthwave marine on a bike. (I'll be doing some other test models, but we are only allowed one model sadly!).
Attached is inspiration for the model. It will not be that good!
Automatically Appended Next Post:
I told you it wouldn't be that good.
(I'm thinking of basing an army off this colour scheme, and lots of One Source Lighting effects. Opinons / suggestions on that would be very useful!
This is very much looking for a "tabletop standard" here. Ie, aiming to look good from a metre away).
Edit: As per suggestion below, I've added another picture with two marines with a 'sunset' paint scheme. The picture didn't take too well, but you should at least get a general idea of the paintscheme. Basically from https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aOS3dbZcvM8 , but on a smaller model.
May make a better version of this for a later challenge.
You can enter up to 5 models. So add more if you want.
I think the effect you want would be better with crisper highlights. (Not that I can get them sharp myself) and maybe some smoother transitions for the OSL parts. “Tron” style is often seen on Tau, but could be done with marines.
I made the mistake of playing a bit of Slime Rancher 2 and getting a bit sucked in. However I think I still have time. I got the highlights and metals mostly done last night. Finishing the metals and doing cockpits tonight, then it’s on to details and basing.
I'm just getting back into painting, so definitely agree that my techniques could use improvement. I added two marines with a 'sunset' scheme, but I may have to wait until a later challenge for that. The pictures didn't really take.
Though thank you for the mention of 'Tron' Tau. Found out that some of those are done with "Montana" brand acrylic pens, so may investigate that as a way of doing highlights!
Closest models I have on hand are these 2 guys. they are primed and dry-brushed. If it is ok, I'll submit these as Proofs, If not then I'll pass this round.

OK so my parents are moving and brought me some stuff that was still somewhere in their cellar / backs of closets etc and weeeeeell here we are
Guess the guy in the front fits this round's theme for many reasons, will re-prime him tomorrow once the green stuff and basing muck have settled.
Finished up my entry. Before The Wall/Beyond The Wall. Two white-box models from Kingdom Death, depicting their character Aya at various stages of her adventure. I don't think it is going well. Mistakes were most surely made.
Overall I am happy with how they have turned out. Good luck to all those still working and great job to all those who have finished!
I actually managed to paint a model for the comp this month - and I even did it in two days! I just need to actually take some photos - I don't want to repeat my previous mistakes...
Model: Tabbybrook Mage
Range: Super Dungeon Explore
Maker: Ninja Division
To expand on the levels of mistakes made - I backed the original Super Dungeon Explore and the Forgotten King back when they first launched.
I only just opened my Forgotten King box (circa 2017). My launch SDE box is unopened.
So cute!! I remember being super hyped about Relic Knights and Soda Pop stuff in general but had neither the money nor the time to get into it then, otherwise I guess I'd also be sitting on unopened game boxes or agonizing about failed Kickstarters ...
These guys have been finished for a few days, but it took a while to get some decent photos. I guess I made some mistakes in my phone's camera settings:
YouWasShock, JoshinJapan and Keezus … I am in awe of your work! You’re certainly motivating me to keep this all up! Of course I love all the paint jobs I see here and this competition is becoming a highlight of my month very quickly…
To digress, I had the exact same situation as Josh here… been done a few days but getting the pictures to where I was happy has taken some fiddling… I currently use a combo of mobile phone, black felt and my hobby light (then PhotoRoom for a black background). Seem to have gotten a fair result with that combination sooooo….
Here is a hapless peasant experiencing the joys of being transformed from sentient being to mathematical paradox. I’m telling you, taking that risky trip a mile too far in search of just one more cabbage is never worth it:
Wheeeee. Mistake was not too big and managed to finish my entry. 5 Clan omnimechs. New toy this time around is the fake snow basing (which you can only see in the close ups…)
Stole the marking scheme from British army armoured regiments. This lot will eventually be broken up between a medium star (square) and a strategic command star (diamond).
And this one is just comparing latest Madcat with previous Madcat

You are fine, Still basically blank.
Alright then! quick and dirty.
Tamclar the Shorn is a beardless dwarf, returns with vengeance after his mate somehow caused his beard to vanish!
Bit of a rush job but glad to be getting this posted in on time.
What a delightful sculpt by Kevin “Goblinmaster” Adams which found its way to me courtesy of Warmonger Miniatures, and I think you’ll agree very on-theme.
Here's mine. This fella's whole life has been a litany of mistakes, the latest of which is believing his trusty shotgun is all he needs to take on the Imperium's finest while mistakenly believing that "Saviors from the Stars" will lead him to paradise.
Mistakes were made... and now the doctor will see you.
Finished pictures of my IW 30k Primus Medicae (apparently minus any apothecary markings), but I guess using a chainfist as a reductor is very Iron Warrior thing to do.
Lots of good stuff being posted! Just finished the last coat of varnish about 5 minutes ago, so once it has some time to cure I'll take some photos. Should at least still be May in my time zone at that point.
Nevelon wrote: Generally I close these over breakfast on the 1st of the month, so about 24 hours to go. Unless someone needs an extension.
But time to wrap things up and grab pics!
*sigh* yeah, I need an extension. I've unexpectedly lost today for painting due to work and I still need to do basing and decals and a few extra bits and pieces. Sorry Nev, sorry everyone...
Umm so about this extension CancelledApocalypse mentioned, I came up with an idea for another little detail to complete the scene (see new proper proof below) and while I managed to finish painting both I still have to do proper photos once the sun comes up tomorrow morning (CET) ... sorry ...
Ok, photos are done and the varnish is dried! I seem to have been a bit hasty in the final coat of the matte varnish on a bit or two, looks like I'll need to touch up the missiles a tiny bit down the line as well as the base rims. Luckily the slop on the basing material itself looks enough like the snow that it looks intentional At least those little mistakes are on brand for the month's theme.
Spoiler:
Like I said, just a tabletop paint job, but I'm very happy with it overall. First fully painted thing of the year.
Nevelon wrote: That’s fine, take your time guys.we’ll go an extra day and see where we are at.
Got back from my work trip a few days ago, was away for most of the month. I've put the paintbrush down now and will get the photos up tomorrow evening
So, mistakes were made, but which and by whom? Was it the Squat turning up to a bonesword fight with a flashlight? Was it GW briefing their designers to sculpt the OG plastic Tyranids as something like a reptile but also a bug and also do you know this artist, Giger? Was it GW squatting the Squats only to have to unsquat them literally decades later? Is it me, sticking to this silly hobby since OG Squats were actually a thing?
Actually, all of those are wrong! The mistake is the Tyranid thinking that this is easy prey just a second before the Squat's las projectile pierces through it's unprotected, pulsing innards. The Squat soon recovered from the irritating flesh wound and lived on to become an important member and beloved elder of a peaceful mining community.
Its been a busy month being away and im not as far forward on the build for the 100th as i would have wanted but I think these guys are pretty cool, its defiantly a mistake to mix Orks and Nids in a massive fight, who knows what you might end up with
Oh, where do I start with the mistakes that were made here . . .
(Spoiler links contain no vulvas)
Spoiler:
This rant is spoilered just because of its length. I'll keep a running tally of the total mistakes made.
The first mistake would be GW's by making another stand alone board game with a bunch of minis, as if anyone needed that (1). But, the second would be the general nerd populace gulping it up (2). GW didn't make enough copies so the on hand sets quickly sold out (3), prompting GW to have to make more. There was, however, some sort of calamity involving potentially lost sculpts (4), and transportation issues (5) due to the pandemic (6), and so it took a while to get the next wave of the game ready for sale. Enter me. I spent quite a while looking on ebay and salivating at the cool minis in Cursed City. I almost bought one for nearly double retail. But fortunately, I didn't (avoided mistake number 7). Then they released another wave and I bought it! (Mistake #7 catches up) Did I need another stand alone game? No (8). Am I ever going to play it? Probably not! (9) I get together with some buddies once a month if I'm lucky, but I generally make it to once every two or three months (10?11?). We mostly play 40k and Boarding Action or Killteam. So, not much call for a niche, stand alone fantasy game. At this point I've had it sitting on my desk in various forms for over a year (12).
I wanted to paint the heroes kind of like the pieces from the board game Clue. I'd take the main color of those characters and use each as the main color in the character minis. Capital Idea! Except, there are two more CC heroes than there are Clue characters (13) and who the thought yellow was a good color to choose? (14). P.S. - The "Colonel Mustard" figure didn't get included because I dropped him and he flew apart into all of his pieces(15). I had to spend the last hobby day I had finding and glueing him back together, rather than finishing him.
So, why not paint one of the Cursed City characters for this competition?(16) It's not like I have over 60 models for my main 40k army to still finish. Plus tanks and dreadnoughts (17). Or 30-40 units to convert for my secondary army (18) not to mention just painting all the battle suits that I have primed. (19) Or, even finishing the Skaven army I have never played with (20, 21?) No, let's jump in! And while we're at it, why not try several new painting techniques I've never done before! Like a glass bottle containing liquid (22) or NMM techniques using TMM paints! (23). Contrast paints to flavor metallics? Sure! (24). Wet blending skin? Why not! (25) Glazing? We've come this far! (26).
{I won't go into all of the mistakes in the dwarf who didn't make it, but they do include more glass bottles (27), realizing the "glass" had rivets (28), covering up the glass paint with metal (29), deciding to scrape the rivets off with a knife (30), and stripping and painting the glass again(31).}
In the story of the game itself, this guy seems like a mistake. He is Brutogg Corpse-Eater, a flesh hungry ogre who is a member of the party in order to fight and eat vampires. (32) Who thought that was a good idea? If you don't get enough kills, where do you think this blood-thirsty one-man-walking-massacre is going to turn for fresh meat?
Then, the pictures I took didn't turn out as good as the wip photos I took previously (33). And I forgot to take a proof photo (34). Fortunately, one of the photos I took at the end of last month for the LoER Competition had a black-primed Brutogg in the background. (-1?)
Had a bit of a nightmare with my decals, but they're finally done. They're members of an astartes contingent on board a dauntless light cruiser sent out as a PR stunt prior to the events of the Horus Heresy. They call themselves 'the Circle' and there is one representative from each of the eighteen legions. The idea was to show all of the legions working together on a long term mission (sort of like a proto-deathwatch). Unfortunately, things quickly went wrong after a bad reversion to realspace from the warp left them without a navigator and they found themselves adrift in hostile space, attempting to survive and discover what went wrong. They must also keep the circle from breaking, as the foibles, secrets and flaws of each legion begin to come to the fore.
This is a modelling and writing project I started about three years ago. When I began writing the story, I thought it would be fun to kitbash the characters I was writing, so I picked up a box of mk3 and mk4 marines, assorted bits and put them together. Three years later, I've finally finished painting the first batch of characters...
Also attached is a proof for the Raven Guard as I haven't posted one for him, yet.
