OK, I'm starting this blog to try and keep me motivated to finish my minis and terrain projects I have going. This will not be as big as my old Warseer blogs.
So, I pick up the Leviathan box yesterday and I'm starting by magnetizing the terminators. There isn't much difference between the new and old terminators arms.
This will allow me to put assault weapons and other options on them.

It will be interesting to see your progress on the Leviathan box. Best of luck

Thanks guys, This one is the magnetized terminator Captain this time around. I won't be magnetizing the terminator librarian, there isn't much optional war gear.

Here is the start of the Infernus squad. The first pair on the left is the original with its reposed version. The second pair on the right, is again, the original with its reposed version. I used spare parts from the infiltrators/Incursors and intercessors boxes. I will be painting them as 3rd Company.

The last of the reposing. The minis on the left are the original and the reposed ones are on the right in the next two pics.
The gun strap is just a 0.5mm polystyrene sheet cut into a small strap.

Before I start painting them, I need to finish up a terrain project I was working on when I got hold of the Leviathan box.
So I'll be posting some terrain next.

Love the assault terminators with the new arms - I have plans to do similar things with mine, so I'm glad to see it works well!

Thanks, the main difference in the new terminators is the leg length, next is the torso length. The old arms are very close in size to the new ones, although the new Stormbolters are a bit more bulky in size. That has me wondering if the new thunder hammers and shields will be noticeably bigger? Either way, these are very use-able as is.

Well, I got side tracked a bit. I started thinking I could switch the legs from my Ballistus Dreadnought with the legs of one of my three undone Redemptor Dreadnoughts.
They are compatible with a small amount of work and will give more variety to both types of my Dreadnoughts. I'm not happy with how the base came out, but it will do.
Now back to terrain.

Finally built my modular terrain. I wanted something that I could store in a small space and wasn't too game specific or blown up. I started by building up 9 plan boxes and then added details of additional panels. Two of them are now painted. A basic white with minimal secondary colors. A simple sponge technique was used for getting a chipped paint look followed by a watered down light tan wash. No primary colors will be used on them. So far I've used dark gray, yellow ocher, light gray blue and dark silver. MIG powders were used for smoke. I'll be adding some industrial signage and warning strips. Also, this terrain was based off a paper terrain set seen in the background. I'm not sure if it is still for sale?

Set laid out. A lot of painting left to do.

I should have been done weeks ago, but Baldur's Gate 3 got me. I think I still need some small scatter terrain to go with it. Maybe some ground mounted solar panels and a few canvas covered boxes. Most of the paint I did with muted colors. I used paints like ochre yellow instead of straight up yellow, dark gray in place of black and muted white with a tan wash. MIG pigments were used for smoke stains.

All the warning signs were just printed on paper and varnished over with a clear acrylic varnish.
I think this should work with regular 40K, Kill Team and Infinity games.

I like it. The terrain is quick and well made. Just enough detail to look interesting without taking away from the real stars of the table (the little plastic soldiers). I often get carried away with details on my terrain and it makes the start to finish time that much longer.

I'm also a fan of minor conversions. So, I like that you've personalized and magnetized your Leviathan marines. Nice work so far. Keep it up.

Here is some of the scatter terrain. Just two ramen bowls with a handmade turbine on top. It's pretty simple to do:

1) Cut two circles or disks out for each bowl with a circle cutter.
2) Then score 16 fan blades on to the top of the first disk. It is very important to stop scoring the fan blades about 1/4 inch from the center of the disk to keep all the fan blades together.
3) Next glue just the very center of the fan blade disk to the other uncut disk.
4) You now need to make 16 little shims or wedges for the fan blades that are about 1.5mm thick.
5) Glue the 1.5mm shim to the front of the fan blade while also gluing the back of the same fan blade to the bottom disk.
This will tilt the fan blades upward in a louver like pattern.

Here is my test model for my 3rd Company. Of course I forgot the decals.

More scatter terrain. The solar panels were made to be big enough to block line of sight of most infantry units including terminators.
I might put off painting them to work on my marines.

OK, I finished the first five of the Infernus Marines. The other five are over halfway done too, so I'm making progress.
My painting won't win any awards, but I think they are a pretty good table top quality minis.

Just a quick post. The Milwaukee tool company puts this storage box set out for about $10 US at Home Depot. I wanted to pass this along to anyone who wants an easy terrain project. They can quickly be turned into buildings by gluing a few windows and doors on to them. The roof also needs to be covered. The shorter two boxes need a spacer on the bottom to make them a little taller. The six dividers can also be turned into barrier walls for scatter terrain. I have too much stuff going on right now to start another project, so I won't be working on this for a long time. Just wanted to give a heads up for this if you live in the US or Canada.

Love the stackable terrain. Have you looked at the Maelstrom's Edge terrain sprues? They are full of doors and windows and greebles that are prefect for a project like this.

Thanks and yes I have looked at Maelstrom's stuff. I do want to use it on those red storage boxes. Right now it's not a priority. My money is mainly going into getting new Space Marines right now. I have a massive amount of polystyrene or plasticard left over from when I had several big hobby blogs over at Warseer that I need to use up too. I can often scratch build what I need, but that Maelstrom stuff would be handy for quick projects.

Two new space marines I'm working on. They are about 95% 3D printed from three or four different makers.
The second picture just shows what about 20 years of scale creep looks like. In another 20 years we may be playing the game with those Joy Toy figures.

I'm done with the infernus marines. I used a finer brush on the highlighting this time which helped. Just need to lighten up my touch a bit to get finer lines.
I also need to use a darker shade of gray to highlight my black. Started painting the Sternguard next.

Very nice! Love the scale creep and the banner.

Sternguard squad is pretty sweet. The checkered shield is an awesome touch.

Thanks, the checkered shield was easy, just paint it red and use the white and clear checked decal that comes in the box.

I think I used Army Painter Drake Tooth or Skeleton Bone as a base, then Citadel Seraphim Sepia shade as a wash.


As a side note; while trying to paint my terminators tonight, I may have discover the the worse food in the world to eat while painting minis.

I'm 90% done with the terminators and I experimented with decorating the power fists. They won't win any awards, but I'm happy with them. I also played with different ways to paint the wings and terminator crux. I used a white base with a Fenrisian Grey wash, followed by a white dry brush. Quick and easy and I like how it came out.

Hey thanks Ragsta! This blog will be more modest than those giant blogs I used to do.

Terminators are done. Had a few issues with them starting with spray painting them in direct sun light on a hot day. The spray paint started to dry before hitting the models and left a pebbly finish on parts of them...Yay me. I removed what I could see, but also missed a few areas I found as I started painting them up, so not my best work.
Up next is the last three models; the terminator captain, librarian and lieutenant in Phobos armor.

Thank you both, the free hand is something new to me. I want to try it more. I was sick for the week, so I didn't get much done, although I did finish off the last of the Leviathan marines. Since Games Workshop seems to be perpetually out of stock these last several months, I have been buying proxy marines stuff instead, I might paint up some of those or start assembling that "Honor of the Chapter" box?

I thought this would be a quick project, but this Redemptor took me a long time to finish. Lots of little details to paint, wash and highlight I guess.
I'm really liking how the fist came out. Need to learn and experiment with more free hand.
I used a bag of crushed red brick to make the broken concrete, then just painted it with four shades of gray and added wire for rebar. I think it looks pretty convincing.
Two base coated Impulsors are sitting right next to me, I could do next, but that's where I was with the one Redemptor too and that took forever. As well, I have a bunch of Etsy Marines coming this week from the mail, I just might wait on and do next. will see.....

Oh yeah, the conversion parts are from Pop Goes the Monkey. The detail are OK for a 6 part set at $24.

OK, two Impulsors down. That went quickly. They are fully magnetized, so all weapons and equipment are interchangeable.
I'm afraid I had issues with silvering on some of the decals, so I need to be more careful about gloss coating under them.

Do you use any transfer solutions? I don’t gloss coat, but haven’t had a silvering issue since i switched to microsol/set.

Nice pair of tanks there. Ohio plate is hilarious.

I use the Micro Sol that softens the decal. but not the Micro Set that replaces the decal's glue which sometime causes silvering. I think I just rushed things and let air get under the decal.

One Invictor warsuit done. I got a little experimental with my basing material. I don't dislike it, but it's a bit meh.
That's my attempt at an alien tree by the way. Really need to set up a light box for my photos, my lighting has been very hit or miss.
So, we'll be working on a small destroyed vehicle next as a terrain piece. It came out better than expected, just need to base it.
I'll probable post pictures of it in a day or two.

Now this project was started about 15 years ago as a destroyed vehicle terrain piece. I tried to do a salt chipping technique on this rhino, but at the time, I didn't own an airbrush. So I tried doing it with a regular rattle can of Rust Oleum. The results were pretty bad and I boxed it away for years. I came across it the other day and thought I might be able to save it. The paint was touched up with a brush in a few areas and Citadel Nuln Oil was washed over everything. Apparently Nuln Oil covers all sins as it came out well for a terrain piece. I based it today and sprayed the rhino with Testors Dullcoat to finish it off. I have an Eldar and Tau vehicle in storage so I could end up doing this to them next....will see.

I too am glad I never threw away failed projects,,, when you discover them a decade later your skills have developed and are more than a match to make something that was failed/ mediocre before, really stand out. Rhino looks like it’s had a beating and suitable “knackered” very much in envy of the rust effect you have achieved.
What’s up next on the bench I wonder?

The weather cleared up enough so I could prime a few minis. So it's looking like Eliminators and a few random minis are next.

I'm painting my Eliminators, but paused a little to put together my own Uriel Ventris, because Game Workshop doesn't make miniatures anymore! Yes, I'm venting as many of the models I want have been out of stock for over 9 months.
It's made from a basic intercessor. The front chest piece and tabard is from the First Born Ultramarine upgrade pack, the back and cape is from the old fantasy chaos warriors (I think the old version is out of production). The rest of the parts are from my bits box. I think it's recognizable enough.

How much work did it take to get that chest to fit? I need to kitbash some primaris company vets, but didn’t even consider using that bit, despite having one on sprue.

It's about a 15 minute job. The two main issues are, one the Firstborn torso will need about a 1 to 1.5mm spacer between the Intercessor's back piece and the Firstborn chest piece. You will also need to add putty to the gap area. The second thing that needs to be done is cutting away part of the belt buckle area so the leather tabard has room. It's a great parts pack and I want to buy six or so for future use before it disappears from the range. I thinking all the Firstborn models might disappear by the time 11th edition rolls out.

The Eliminators have been eliminated from the painting list. I also had time to finish a Not Callidus assassin from Ghamak,because again, GW doesn't want to sale me one. The Eleiminators came out well enough, but the one of the camo cloaks that's in the middle of transitioning is disappointing.
I have ten Hellblasters ready to go next as well as a couple of miscellaneous minis. I'm getting close to having a use-able battle force. Well, until next time.

More support characters done. The ones on the left and right of the center chaplain were converted from regular Intercessors. I pick up two boxes of Intercessors just to make extra support characters and save a bit of money. The chaplain on the right has a lot of chaos bits, in fact, the head is a fantasy Khorne berserker with the wing things cut off. Chaplains are oddly chaosy. They look as if the kids from high school that were into death metal grew up and became priests. Anyways, back to the paint mines.

I wasn't sure what size base to use for him, as most support and named characters use 40mm, but many of the inquisition range still use smaller sizes, even named characters use 32mm ones. I ended up making a custom 40mm base.

Three short projects done. The first is my version of Uriel Ventris. I think he is serviceable. I tried doing more highlighting on his face, but I don't think I thin my paint enough. The result aren't great, but if you don't try new things you don't get better. The next one is a custom apothecary. I like having extra support characters without paying $40 each. I can get 10 support characters for the cost of one Intercessor box. The last one was the Buzz Lightyear vehicle. I pick them up on sale for six dollars each and bought three of them. I just added a little detail paint and a wash over the truck. The next two will be painted white and one of those I'll make into a flatbed truck. I might convert the back of the unused body into a pull trailer. I measured one of the figures that came with the truck and he was 31mm from the bottom of his foot to his eye. At this point 40k is basically 32mm, so the truck is a good scale for it.

Edit: EEEK, I forgot the green trim on his shoulder pads! I'll fix it later.....

Nice work on the medic and I do love those Lightyear trucks.

I kept the paint job simple with a lot of dry brushing. At the moment they are on Amazon for about $6.
There are a few more ships and trucks on the painting list, but I'm not sure when they will be done.
Currently I'm working on some terrain. Well post more maybe after the holidays, Marry _______ insert religion of your choice.

Well, I took a short detour in my painting and it took me about four weeks to get it done. I pick up a set of Rampart terrain for about $60 and I was surprised by how much scenery you get for that. I did add some floors and a few walls to make it more versatile and that lead to the next project below. I'm not sure when I'll paint it as I have a number of marines and Inquisitorial henchmen to paint.

So, I decided to spent three weeks scratch building this building to go with the Rampart terrain above for some crazy reason when I could have just bought another set which I did anyways.
Sometimes you just get the scratch to build.

Is that just foam core?? Looks amazing.

Ooo those buildings are very cool, how did you do the cracks in the walls?

That ship has a LOT of potential for detail working and conversion

Terrain is looking good and I like the space ship model. The confessor model looks intimidating.

The walls are made from three separate layers of 1mm thick polystyrene. The outsider layers are cut into puzzle like pieces and carved to look damaged.
I then glued those separate puzzle pieces onto the third middle layer. This causes the illusion of a cracked wall. Next time I do it, I'll make a tutorial of it, but it might be a while.

I was trying to keep the ship a bit generic and blocky for different games. I could see how all those fins would go with a chaos ship.

Took a little break to work around the house and I'm now back to the Rampart terrain.

Some really nice work. You're bringing a corner of the setting to life in tabletop.

I appreciate the feed back guys. I've been mostly goofing off, but I did finish magnetizing that Rampart terrain.
Will need to add some floors to some of it before painting. Was also able to build a shelf for my paints with my plastic sheets.
It will hold about 200 or so bottles. It's not fancy, but it is right next to my painting desk, so it is very convenient.
So, I'm running out of excuses for getting my marines painted....

Hell Blasters are done. I almost have a playable army!
Sorry, but I'm genetically incapable of taking proper pictures of miniatures.
They're either washed out, too dark or out of focus. But they are finally done.
Up next may be the Honored of the Chapter or the Spearhead Force box sets.
My terrain needs painting, but I want to experiment with making my own washes and speed paints before starting though.
I need something quick, but I don't want to have to pay out a bunch of money for speed paints.

Thank you. It's looking like I'll be customizing my mono posed eradicators next.

The Eradicators have been modded. I turned three regular melta guns into two heavy meltas and one multi melta.
Originally I was going to do a more elaborate backpack mod on the multi melta, but ended up simplifying it. I think it still works.
This will be my "Mark I Pluto Pattern Multi-Melta".

Before painting these, I may be modding and old Space Marine bike into a Primaris sized Chaplin bike.

The bike Chaplin and bike came together pretty quickly. I added a half inch(13mm) spacer between the engine block and the front fender to match the Primaris version.
Then just built a box around it. I think it's serviceable. I have 3 or 4 of the old bikes unassembled, so i can make more if needed.
The first born bikes where from an unopened box still wrapped in cellophane. It was the older version with metal riders too. God knows how long it had been sitting there.

Eradicators done. Next up may be Attack Bikes and 3D printed Not Heavy Intercessors.
Also just ordered a Gladiator Impulsor, new Sternguard and the new Scout Marines.
Need to see the new Scout next to the old plastic ones to see if I can convert then in a convincing way.
I have not ruled out a partial cheesecloth Gillie suit over the old scouts. I would also add a few spacers to them to give height as one way to do it.
The cheesecloth would hide any awkwardness if the spacer are not enough, but will see in a while as shipping will take 3 to 4 weeks.

Thanks guys. OK, I have my Not Heavy Intercessors assembled. They are a bit chunkier than GW's version.
I did a simple frag cannon conversion into a heavy bolter, but otherwise it was pretty straight forward group.
My first bike is also done and I'll be finishing the rest off with the chaplain bike.

Assault bike done and Chaplin bike halfway finished.

Those marines are, indeed, quite chunky. I like the little shield you added to the HB. It gives a real sense of size and power to the weapon, like the dude firing it needs a little extra protection when he shoot it.

OK, here is my bike chaplain. I was kind of worried about it as I was building it.
It didn't seem quit right, but after getting paint on it, it seems OK.
So I'm done with the murder bikes and moving on to the Heavy Intercessors and scouts.

Cool looking Chaplain. Whenever I see a Marine bike, I can't help but hear the first few chords of "I Am The Law" by Anthrax.

That was a fun movie.

Was putting together the new scouts last night and found out there is almost enough extra parts for two extra figures.
They just lack the two legs. I happen to have "heroic sculpting armatures" from Reaper miniatures that are a perfect size for Primaris Marines.
I chopped the top half off and added Green Stuff for pants. I also use the other armatures for a close combat version of the scout with a bolter and hunting blade.
I'll just leave him bare chested like a Catachan.

More work on the bonus marines. My Green Stuff sucks, so I'm thinking I will paint their pants black to hide my work more.
I also never really like the blue and white scouts scheme either.
The camo cloak came out OK and it hides the legs too. I just wish I had thought of it earlier.
Well, I did get fourteen scouts out of a box meant for ten. I'm not sure if I want to do the body suit plugs out of Green Stuff or just paint them on.
I guess just do it with putty and if it doesn't work I can scrap them off.

Yeah, I'm leave them shirtless. I considered a poncho, but that seems like a bit of a waste for the armature.
I'm not sure how to make them stand out as space marines though, other than a big I love Ultramarines tattoo.
Although, I do plan on doing a big tribal tattoo on one of them.

Well, they are carrying SM equipment. You wrote earlier that scouts shouldn't be as colorful as regular marines (I'm paraphrasing), so I wouldn't worry too much. I'm sure they'll look fine in context.

In addition to the one guy with the tribal Ultra tattoo, maybe give them a short mohawk? The original plastic space marine scouts from Space Hulk Crusade boxed set had something like a short mohawk.

Well, I did an experiment with making my own crackle paint. Pick up a jar of ($12/237 ml) Golden Crackle Paste and a ($5/20 ml ) brown alcohol based ink.
I mixed up a heaping teaspoon of the paste and added 6 drops of ink to it. It was applied about 2 to 3 mm thick and It dried to the color of light terracotta, but the cracking was underwhelming. It's not what I wanted, so I think I'll try AK-Interactive crackle ($12/100 ml) next. It's still a lot cheaper than GW.
This stuff is OK for general ground cover and I may use it on terrain, just not on minis.

I also looked into making some speed paints, but unless you use a lot of speed paint it's not worth it.

Well, I got a few thing off my check list:
First up, My version of Mikael Fabian, Captain of 3rd Co.
Second, lieutenant Outis Nemo, hero of Serifos.
Lastly, the Not heavy Intercessors.
Maybe the scout are up next?

I'm not sure how far I'll go. I have about 150 to 250 minis painted up of the old Ultra minis.
Definitely don't want to go that far. Maybe a playable 2000 point army with a few extra fun minis.


Well, this week I managed to get my scouts primed in black and assembled that five man sternguard box.
There was enough extra bits to convert a ten man box of Intercessors box into Sterguard as well.
I found some old 2nd or 3rd ED metal veteran shoulder pads to go with them too.

Playing catch up. Love that biker chaplain, amazing conversion, fits right in with the outriders aesthetic. The stretching of the boxes of nu marines is mighty impress too, those sternguard are great

I just finished three random minis. Jump Captain, Tyranid Vet and Standard Bearer.
I goofed on the Tyranid Vet and Standard Bearer by not giving them white helmets, but I'm probably not going back to fix them.
They'll be fine and since Tyranid Vets are in Legends now, I'll probably use him as a Lieutenant/Captain with shield.
Still need to figure out how I want to paint those Scouts. I'm leaning towards tan cloth with blue armor.

This is my test scheme for my scouts. I want subdued and simple. Mostly just tan, black and blue with a little silver. The wings on the chest plate are black with a little gray and white highlight. There are a couple of changes I want to do, like use a brighter silver on the gun so it stands out more against the black, but this is pretty much what I want.

Tan uniform came out well. He looks like a scout.

Two more scouts done. Feeling good about how they came out.
I used a "003 Pigma Micron" ink pen for the tattoo if anyone wants to try it.
I recommend doing a basic light sketch of a tattoo with soft carbon lead mechanical pencil first then going over it with ink, then a water based varnish.
They rest of the scouts are mostly done, just need a bit of finishing touches.

The armature scouts turned out pretty well, they’ll probably blend in well with the rest of the unit

Scouts are looking good.

I’ve only tried tattoos once or twice. One trick to make them look old and faded is to put a flesh glaze over them. Very daunting to do after you spent all the work on the freehand.

Although scouts probably have fresh ink.

Well, all 14 scouts are done. I basically have two of each weapons type plus one magnetized for options. I don't think I have the compulsion to paint 15 Sternguard, so I'll probably assemble my Jump marines instead. I also have a Gladiator Lancer to do as well as a single ATV.
Basically at this point I'm about 2/3 through painting my marines and I'll be looking at my final marine purchases this month. So possibly getting another lancer, a few more interceptors and aggressors.

That is really nice work on the tattoos Tommygun1918.

It was fun doing something new for me.


I had forgotten I had these Not Blade Guard, so I may end up doing them with my Honoured of the Chapter minis.
It was a nice set of three Blade Guard with a Captain and a Lieutenant. I ended up posing the swords and shields in a pretty conservative way as the resin they're made out of is brittle. Hopefully they will be less likely to break when handling.
