Welcome all to the 103rd round of the Dakka Painting challenge. For the unfamiliar, this is a friendly painting competition open to members of all skill levels and experience, whether your entry is your first or you thousand-and-first time painting miniatures. Each month, finished entries are collected into a thread where the community can vote on their favorite pieces, and those votes go towards an annual overall League that runs for 12 rounds.
This month the topic is "Sun’s Out, Guns Out". Rip off those sleeves and flex those muscles. Let’s see those arms. Or, if you have been neglecting time in the gym (do you even lift bro?) go more literal and overcompensate with some massive cannons. Or just double down on the theme and paint some guns that shoot suns! Either something like a plasma gun, or some star-eating doomsday device. Desert or other sun-baked scenes would also be good. Maybe the beach?
How To Enter
- You may enter up to 5 MODELS as a SINGLE ENTRY, and are permitted one entry per member per month. If you enter multiple models, they should ideally be related in some way, such as part of the same squad, unit or scene if you are doing a diorama
- You may enter at any time during the month, up to the last minute. We do encourage people to enter early, as to be part of the community, but if you can’t start until the 11th hour, that’s OK.
- You MUST post a 'proof' picture of your entry in the thread of the state it was in before you started working on it; this must be either unassembled, unpainted, primed or coated a single colour. Entries that do not submit a valid Proof Picture will not be eligible for voting.
- After this, you may post WIP pictures in this thread and your own if you wish, and on completing the entry, you may post up to 6 final pictures IN THIS THREAD that will then be used for voting. Please note that pictures in a montage or collage picture will be considered individual images for this purpose, so while these types of presentation are certainly acceptable, please keep the image limit in mind when compiling them. For example, a collage of 5 images and one separate image would count as your 6 picture allowance.
So What Do I Win?
- Points... and points mean... bragging rights for the next month! Following the vote, points will be awarded to every entrant. This year, the Points you receive will be equal to the Percentage of Votes your entry receives in the final Voting thread; if you get 10%, you get 10 points, if you get 6% you get 6 points, so on and so forth.
These points will be used to form a league table, which will be updated month on month as the results come in.
How Long Do I Have?
This challenge begins 1st of September and will end at midnight EST on September 30th. After this, I shall compile the finished entries into a new thread, and voting will run for 5 days.

Wow, you guys are hot out of the gate. Sun is just barely up here and we already have a few entries.
Going with a HB scout. I also have one with a comically oversized sniper rifle, who I may also do. But he has his sleeve's down.

I had Plasma Gal ready to go last month whichever theme won the poll, but since it was a tie I held her back for this one. She'd be a cultist presumably, for tabletop purposes I'll say the plasma gun's in poor repair and just belching out unfocused gouts of plasma so ruleswise it behaves like a flamer. Captain Fugly's just there because it's been sitting around in undercoat for months now - maybe I'll get around to finishing it this month, maybe not (not in much of a painting mood TBH, but I expect I'll at least be able to finish off the Escher), we'll see.

Well, there is not a giant hole in the middle of his chest, so less gaps then the last time we saw someone enter that mini in a competition.

One thing I like about this monthly challenge is it forces me to look through my old piles o' shame and find stuff to paint. So- I give you Krystal, a limited edition mini from Newwave games for CMON. She definitely speaks softly and carries a big gun- buuuut, the sculpt hasn't held up well- the fact her waist is the size of the scope should tell you that. But I think I can go for a more cartoony/ anime style to bring out the wierdness, as a more realistic paint job may make the strange proportions more evident. I don't think the fact she used Rob Liefeld as a fashion consultant helps either..

I doubt I will actually be able to finish, but with the theme I was thinking how cool it would be to make and paint an earthshaker cannon for the Death Korp of Krieg to use in the Siege of Vraks. If I actually finish building it, painting it should be easy.

Ooh, scratch build, nice.
I’ve now assembled all the big boys, barring one set of legs that didnt print properly. These things are big enough that I think I’ll try black basing again and do these mostly with the airbrush. I am gravitating to a mid-grey scheme again I think

Some cool entries this month!
So sun's out guns out eh?
My entry ticks all the boxes.
The first half of Thegn Idryc's Salvagers. The Norhymbre Cooperative finally have a Kill Team. I had a lot of fun today snippin', cuttin' and convertin'. So we have got Vasqa with a BFG, then "Boom-Boom" Makaz showing off his guns, we have Eata carrying a load of guns, Ytharus who has quite a small gun and of course Thegn Idryc who has a gun that fires out a small sun.
I'm away on holiday next week so I'll have to crack on when I get back..

I knew this day was coming, and had prepared for it. But my old pot of RT-era Dark Angel’s Green finally gave up the ghost and dried out. New stuff looks to be a decent match on color, but doesn’t cover as well. Probably because the old stuff was getting pretty thick and sludgy near the end. The green is dead, long live the green!
The less old, but still ancient hexpot of Goblin Green I use for the scout’s fatigues and bases is still going strong.

Currently in the process of ruining bits and pieces failing (and sometimes succeeding! yay!) to make the most orky outfitted APC (see proof pics earlier)
Still contemplating wether to 1: paint the APC in camo (which is a lot to paint in camo -_- ) so that it is extra stealthy as it earthquakes all over the place while shooting everything equally stealthily.
2: add more Orks to it than the current 3 planned to.., don't want to put too much hay on my poseidon's (lord of the earth mind you!) trident.
Feel free to chime in your thoughts.

There are a lot of styles of camo. Some just need a bigger brush to work on larger things. Or just splash some purple on it, as IIRC that’s the sneaky color. Red + purple camo for fast stealth?
(take with a grain of salt, just started my first cup of coffee for the day, brain not really up and running yet)

Consider the wagon's previous owner when you think about camo schemes. You could look up Rogue Trader era Marine camo patterns and make a weathered and beaten version of that, with welded on extra gubbins in bare metal and maybe some Ork glyphs painted over the original paint.
There's no such thing as too many passengers. With Orks you have the advantage that you have Grot riggers that you can add for extra flavor even if you stick with the original number of Orks. It's always worth sneaking in a few of those.

Purple is out of the question, I reserve that for my holy mountain sized pile of mortal Nurgle shame clothing.
Also I really don't like purple and green together, hurts my eyes (and feelings)
Considering my Orklings are of the best Ork clan (bloodaxes) they cannot be fast, they have to be precise and sneaky.
I will probably either go with Urban (grey blue) camo or classical GREEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEN. (probably will be green, even the green bits of it)

Running an internal debate. Whether to follow my original inclination and paint some (sightly modified) catachan soldiers, or to finish a model or three for my army and paint some really big guns.
I'll probably end up trying to do both and finish neither.
I have a game next weekend, so maybe I'll work on the Broadsides this week. Try to get them done or mostly done for the table. Then I'll start the Catachan next week, and that'll leave me the final week to decide and finish whichever stands out.

Well, seem to have opposite of last month's problem where I procrastinated for so long and went and got most of it done in 2 days,.. then sat around for a few weeks and all my wet palette paint dried..
So, went for more cartoonish style, hence the major blacklining. Again- this sculpt lends itself to that, because the proportions are no where near real-life! I Also remember some of the things of metal minis I hate so much: You can never straighten out something 100%!! Oh well- can't think of any more damage to do here (that's a lie- I am an artist, after all..)

The month is half over. After taking a week long break to mentally prepare myself for the fun to come, I started painting teeny tiny splotches on the uniform today. Strictly speaking painting the camo pattern isn't hard, but it's definitely something I want to be in the mood for.

Primarchs were meant to be some of the biggest guns created by the Emperor.
With that in mind, for my first Dakka Painting Challenge I've picked Lorgar, Primarch of the Word Bearers.
Proof images of body and parts (note that I won't be painting the diorama part at this time, only Lorgar himself):

Slowed down a bit, a lot of work on the individual Orks, still have to add detail (like the actual camo) onto them, also just started to add the green layer on the vehicle itself, which also will need camo ofcourse.. and haven't gotten to the interior yet either let alone the base.. a short 2 weeks to go and feeling a bit faceslapped by the weather (and a bad dinner, having had falavel for the first time in like 5 years ..probably a case of light food poisoning.. just not feeling that well) and a busy end of month with loads of appointments -_-..
I hope I can get this one done in time and will have to skip atleast a month after to get back up again.

Next month there is no vote, as it will be the annual Halloween Special. Spooks, spirits, ghost, goblins, monsters, kids dressed up, trick-or-treating. Pumpkins and changing leaves. So if you need to source parts or start build (but no paint yet) get thinking about that.

Lucky enough to get 1 extra day off work, and the plan was to get everything done in one day. Ended up with 10 Squats from the box.
Late realization that all backpacks I glued upside-down. Also, should of gone for Ungrim instead.
Any miss-mold/sculp is covered with belt accessories and decorative holes.
Other lad got more bits.
The kit came in with helmet shield visors, however I wanted all helmets to be opened, and the shield visors got repurposed as a shoulder plates.
Bossman got an Iron Anvil for the backpack, and a ceremonial grenade in a form of a small hammer.
Pieces attached to sprue lengths with the sprue-glue will make painting easier, thus faster.
Primed and sorted
Bases get a classic: rubbing-alcohol/water 50/50 and PVA spray.
Its 2:30am and plan failed, can't get all done in one day.
But got 1 done for the submission, in case I wont have time till rest of the month to work on these. All washes over white with ArmyPainter fancy famed speedpaints ( Sand Golem for yellow, Hive Dweller Purple for purple, and Hardened Leather for brown)
Camera still broken.

Everything but the face. (I have only 4, they are expensive)
Generally I paint in washes over white with any paint, or try to as much as possible, because it is faster.
The only thing on the body other than speed-paints are:
1-Teal color dabs on the guns and shoulder light.
2-Silver on the gun bullet drums, and tools on the belt.
3-Light selective dry-brush dusting of pure White over whole guy, especially from top.
In fact, a light dry-brush dusting of color is quickest way to unify colors and the model.
One note however:
For sand golem I used about 2 drops speed-paint and 3 or 4 drops of water. Some areas that needed to be darker would get a dab of the pure undiluted speed-paint, on top of the diluted wash.
Purple got one drop of speed-paint and one drop of water. But after the pants I diluted the purple further with water and made additional dabs over yellow to add extra contrast.
And leather was used pure undiluted because I needed that bright color for the gloves.
So, the speed-paints where applied with with slight variance. For me painting it in this way is like 8 times faster.
Other Side-note however:
when I paint with acrylic I don't use water because of surface tension. Instead I use mixture of water and 70%rubbing alcohol from that spray bottle that is used to mist down terrain before the pva.
Normal water is fine too, just personal preference. Mixture is about (1part alcohol to 4 or 8 parts of water)
That skill I picked up from absolute master- Luke Towan

I would like to enter competition with my tiny Predators, but the rules premit just the base and one color, and some of the hulls heve two colours on them. Can I enter the competition with models like this, or should I repaint them with base again? I will be repainting the red color anyway because now it is quickshade paint, and the tests showed that classic shading looks better on them.

Well, here is my entry for this month. It's mainly been an excuse to try out this 'green stuff' I've heard people talking about.
Full squad;
Squad leader (and by far the best picture here. Sadly my phone isn't getting them well)
Shooting without overcharging;
"I should not have Overcharged"
"I should have worn a helmet"
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Yes, this is basically a fancy excuse for a joke
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Here are some test pieces I've done as well. Due to the photo/model limit, these are NOT part of the entry for this month.
I just thought readers might find the ideas interesting.
I found a online tutorial here ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LsAby2Hg9x8) on how to paint models via Pointillism.
It didn't come out that well, but it might work well for a camo cloak (and the tutorial thumbnail is pretty).
I also found a 'stained glass' tutorial here ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rqLxIB9jZ1E)
This actually seems very doable on flat surfaces. My first attempt on a base actually looks interesting.
I've also tested out 'cross-hatching', from here ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e2yA5omBDOI, first few minutes)
Again, I didn't get it working, but you might.

Well, I feel like a flattened grot finding out the razorback vehicle has no base (and I looked forward to using a thin layer of clay to make those caterpillarprints in.. sigh..) but this is it.., at first didn't glue the back-door but placing the look-out-gun into the opening kinda demanded it. I did paint the interior actually.. probably not visible on the photos.
As a sidenote, I completely forgot to paint the front lights (feel free to yell waagh at me.. or just pretend the Orkys didn't know how to turn them on -_-)
and technically could've taken better pics ..however; im doing a fast and have a massive headache from both work and the Gym (upper back workouts)
As another sidenote, no story this time for the same reason as my aforementioned debilitation.
As another s.. no just kidding, no more sidenotes.

Well I am calling mine done…
This has been an intimidating project for me due to the sheer size of this figure, I was uncertain where to begin or how to approach the huge areas of armour and flesh, but I knuckled down and followed the various techniques I have picked up over the last few months and I feel fairly content with how it has all turned out. Sure, there is a lot I feel could be improved, but overall the result is close to how I imagined this pagan berserker would look when I made this impulse buy earlier in the year.
I only tackled this figure due to having a lot of free time over this past three weeks (practically every day) to spend working on him. He definitely has the guns to qualify for this months theme!
I hope to receive feedback as always…
(I also include a sixth photo at the end of the post for size comparison to my Abhorrent Archregent just to give everybody an idea of how huge this guy is! This is not a photo I am ‘submitting’ so much as a peculiarly for those interested)

Third one down, started base coating the fourth which just leaves the Thegn to do at the end of the week.
This is Eata - an bitter dwarf who happened to draw the short straw carrying the kit. He might not have unstood the theme as his guns are safely stowed.

And Mothsniper! Awesome work on that Necromunda Squat. Great choice in colour scheme!
Second one of my five down:
The aptly named Ytharus - who flies too close to a radioactive sun.
Thanks.
YES more Dawi! I mean Sqats!
Our color schemes are very close! What is the base color are you using for the armor?

Epic! Crispy and very Clean paintjob.

Haha! Thanks
Yes, the sword is pretty similar for sure! Nice reference! Really pleased you like the paint job too.
I wasn’t sure how to tackle the armour but just went for a scruffy brass look in the end… most of the Vikings I looked at online seemed to have that style, along with lots of wolf pelts and bright ginger beards lol

And done!
Sierra Savannah Kittichat, Terra Nova Marine Sniper:
And not intended for the voting thread, here's a picture with Tomboy and SS side by side for a handy size comparison of the standard 5.56mm assault rifle and the 12.7mm sniper rifle:
I went with a darker beige for SS's uniform after having doubts about Tomboy's. Nothing terrible and it's not a major difference, but I tend to be happier with warmer colors in my camo patterns.

Really nice work here. Unfortunately the month has run away for me so I won’t be able to get anything finished this time around. On the plus side, so little progress has been made that everything is there ready for the next relevant round

Lot of nice work everyone! If you are not panicking about the deadline, you might want to start soonish, or just procrastinate. Your call. Remember next month is spooky time. You should know the drill, but feel free to ask any questions.
If people do need a little extension on this month just give a shout.

Thanks! Living where I do, ogres (oni) are either red or blue, and I went with blue.

Thanks! I tried to keep all the models in this set low-tech, as it were, with natural fibers rather than any colorful dyes.

Are there extra requirements for the halloween painting challenge? There was a post about getting started on modelling a bit earlier in this thread... Is it required to model custom stuff? Sorry if the questions are silly, but based on the wording it seems like there's something extra happening outside of the "paint up to 5 models and take 6 pictures".

No, no extra requirements. Due to the extra work involved with custom sculpting or kit bashing, there is often a bit of leeway to begin before the month in question.
The model(s) should be unpainted at the start of the month (primer or one color base coats aside). Assembly, customization, and sculpting don't count toward the one month painting challenge requirements.
Spooky models and Halloween in general tend to be favored by people who share many of the interests that Nerd-Folk often enjoy. If you sense a greater feeling of excitement than usual, it is likely due to that effect.

This.
It’s not different then other months besides being a set theme every year. (alongside “Space Marines” in March and the December “Open Round”) Normally we have a vote about a week before the end of the month for the next month’s topic, but since we don’t have that prior to the fixed topic months I like to point it out. I know personally it’s a great reminder that the month is almost over and I need to finish what I’m working on.
And like IRL, some people go all out for Halloween here in the painting challenge.
I’m probably going to end up painting some of the baddies from the Cursed City box this year. Never got around to cleaning up the last of the nighthaunt from the Soul Wars box. Need to polish those off and get them out of the Pile of Shame

Oh, that was me, wasn't it? The question's been answered, but I'll add my personal perspective. I love converting and sculpting, and have been kind of ambitious with both for a long time. But that usually stretches out the time it takes to get to the painting stage. And I'm not a fast painter either. I can only admire the people who knock out those huge, awesome conversions we occasionally see in the challenge from bits to fully painted model in only one month. I couldn't do that. So this year has been very kind on me with half of the themes known at least a month in advance, meaning I could sculpt some models and have them ready for painting on the first of the relevant month. October is another one of those, and one I'm quite looking forward to.
The downside to this is that I like the challenge for motivating me to finish models that otherwise don't get the attention they deserve. This year has been a little light on that because I had enough time to make new models more often than not. So there's something to be said for getting surprised with a theme at the end of the month, too.
Also on that note, I've known for three weeks now what I want to do for the open round in December. And I spent those three weeks not assembling the thirty or so plastic bits the model has. So yeah. Advance warning really helps if I want the model ready for painting on time.

GSC Demolitions Specialist, Final Pics:
Super Pleased with the way the lens turned out, decided to go the more traditional red/orange route, partially because I wanted to reflect that everthing around this guy is probably on fire, and also partly because I had better paints for it:

Thanks, XvArcanevX!
My Chapter's color scheme is a reference to the American military. Army green with red, white and blue accents. Then I was looking at some old Mechwarrior Knights, who sometimes have an arm painted in their original affiliation colors. So I had the idea that this guy was a Techmarine who still wanted to show his allegiance to the machine and Mars. This led to having him also have served in the Deathwatch and keeping the silver arm like some Marines do when they return to their Chapter. Pretty much a bunch of fluff justification for breaking up the model with some different colors.

Ha… well it’s striking and covers the whole spectrum so the fluff embellishes that regardless
Makes me wonder if my planned Dark Angels might not benefit from a similar design philosophy. Come to think of it there are plenty of English customs to draw from. You know what, thank you, I have just had an awesome idea!
