No idea how long this has been out, but it's a new one to me:

I've always been troubled by the use of non-GW rocks in GW games. Now there are no excuses for not using official (and WYSIWYG) rocks.
Good for you GW!

Think of all the armies that will have to be rebased using the Official GW Rock!?! I'm glad I don't play in GT's or GW stores and can get away with having non-GW rocks in my army, so nyah!

How long will it be before someone asks for a greenstuff molding tutorial to create more of these "official" rocks?

Less than two minuites.
Does anyone have a tutorial so that I can make the rocks out of greenstuff?

I prefer using Rackham rocks. They cost a bit more when you order them as bits (£.70) and you can't use them in any official GW events, but the sculpts are of a much higher quality, so to me it's worth it.

Around Christmas "Boulder" will be released for 10 pounds, then a pile of pebbles for 6.

Hey now... I bet a lot of work went into sculpting that rock. The artist should be proud.

And £.60? It's a steal for such an amazing mini. You all should be thankful that GW is producing these rocks.

I heard they were bringing it out in plastic - having scanned the old metal RockTM with the new CAD system. It will come in a box with extra LichenTM sprues and be fully customiseable with 2 optional faces...

And it will still cost the same as the original metal RockTM.

I remember seeing an ebay auction where the guy made an ogre kingdom army made entirely from rocks. I wonder how long 'til GW goes after him.

Hopefully the rock tutorial will include a section on how to make moss. Everyone needs some moss on their rock and I for one can't be bothered to use Woodland Scenics moss because it won't be GW-approved.

C&C appreciated.

I think this paint job has a lot going for it. Sadly, it lacks the depth of the second edition red. Perhaps you could add a wash to it to make the crevices really stand out? As it is, I can barely make out the chips in the subpar second edition blood red rock.

I dont blame you, as it is hard to squeeze blood red out of stone. That, and this is very obviously a trish morrison sculpt, which dont help matters any.

It also needs some highlighting. As is, whatever highlighting you've done, if any, is too subtle. Or, worse, is it dipped? That might explain the sloppy uninspiring paint job. And, no, you can't see any of my rocks, I haven't painted them yet.

The red rock is not magnified enough. I can't tell if you even have a highlight on that thing. Anyway, I think that blending and layering 50 layers on it would be a good start to a golden demon. You could even get a few more rocks and, like a good modern artist, attempt to symbolize something with your abstract piece. Anyway, go with an NMM "ore" piece. I think that might win. You can even freehand a symbol on it. Now that I think about it, I am seriously contemplating submitting a rock piece for next year's GD.

KK: Sorry but that's not a rock. That's a boulder. Way out of this league. You're comparing a terminator to a gobbo! Of course one's going to cost more and I'd pay more for the better sculpt too.

I want the special collector's edition rock from the Gotrik and Felix novels. But I'll never take it out of the mylar package so it can appreciate beyond the $29.95 retail price, at least until it gets nerfed in the next edition and I buy it on eBay for $9.95.

There was a dungeon crawl game that used rock/paper/sissors as the combat mechanism. They made rock do points of damage instead just 1 to add "strategy" to the game.

I totally forget what that was called too but its dungeon tile thingies wound up being bases.

Ok, got a question about the rock.  What type of rock is it exactly because according to the fluff certain rocks are harder then others so that would make a difference on the T.  I mean it wouldn't make sense for a sandstone to be just as tough as a Carborundum, right?

Also, if I painted it to look like a garnet but called it a ruby could I still use the rules for lapis lazuli?

I can't wait to covert that to fight against The Emperors Pointy Sticks.  I will call my army "Chaos Rocks!"

Of course, the rules for paper are only in IA, so they may not always be allowed in tournaments. Hence the abundance of scissors armies in competitive play.

Have you seen the Victor Hardy version? It is mainlining heroin, and if you turn it upside down you can see richard and the twins next to an upright smile and he has named it "Sesuj". When it got DQ, he whined about the 50,000 hours and 25% of his remaining life force that he had put into the miniature and how no-one appreciates his free hand skill, and in no way was he trying to court contoversey. The name was just a coincidence and people read way to much into things.

Actually, even though it is an open category you still have to have a large %age of your model made of citedal stuff or sculpted by yourself. The new GW rocks aren't as big and this was made by mother nature so the entrant is in fact a dirty cheat. I believe that they should now be banned from all GW shops and GW run tournements - oh wait, that's not a punishment.

ahhhh I see. So what your saying is your not dedicated enough to the hobby to make the effort. Despicable. If you look at the Rackham scenery you with see their rocks have 50 levels of highlights (after 20 glazes and an inking or two), though at least two of your friends will bore you for an least an hour telling you how crap NMM looks on rocks and you should just drybrush it.

Get the latest Cry Havoc. They do a 10 page spread explaining how they did, using phrases like "insist the hightlights" and other badly translated impenetrable phrases. If, whilst reading it, you listen really closely you can hear a frenchman laughing and saying "lets see those stupid Americans try and copy this with these instructions".

I agree with fullhead. I love the Rackham quality of painting that puts 'Eavy Metal to shame. It's also pretty funny how those who can't do NMM complain about it - envy I guess. (I'm working on my highlighting skill via feathering and wet-dry and hopefully I too can do a 500-layer mini someday. Someday...)

Anyone who's waiting on Forgeworld are just setting themselves up for disappointment. The "super rock 5000's" rules made by forgeworld and costing 10x as much will only kill 0.5 MEqs/turn, rather than the original rock which can kill 2.5MEqs/turn.

It is a mini specefically for the campaign codex but it won't be available until part way through the campaign.

Four months later, 2 people in the whole wide world (or universe) who made powerful (x2) rock armies will be heard to whine ad nausem because their highly converted one trick pony army has been banned from GT's. There will be much wailing and gnashing of teeth as they complain that they won't be able to use their army ever again in their whole life.

1,000,000 extra people join Dakka to say how this has personally affected them (x4) and never post again. One of those poster will say one of his friends knows some-one who played against some whose sister was married to a man who actually had a rock army and if we don't join a petition "it could be your army next". At least 10 people will respond saying the army isn't hard to play against and that they have never ever lost a game of 40k ever in their whole life and other people's tactics suck.

Someone will then say that RAW makes that list totally illegal, and their will be a 4 page heated (x5) debate over the word "rock" and whether or not it can be also armed with a pebble.

Accurate?

LOL and here I saw that Kid Kyoto posted on this thread, and I expected a preview for Codex: Box of Rocks

but yeah, we pretty much must be on something at this point.

Charlie Brown got a rock. He also got herpes from Peppermint Patty, but that isn't relevant to this topic.

Wow. My handle might be "stonefox" or "fox of stone" if you'd prefer, but I'm nowhere near as stony as these guys. Well, all's good. It's only 0.50c for the rock and if people get so much joy from it I support that.*

*Didn't you know? Buying rocks at 0.50c a piece and terminators at $10 a piece is much cheaper than harder recreational activities! GW is a cheap and caring company. Surely they'd never think of charging a box of warriors as much as an ounce of rock - they only charge 0.50c for theirs, after all.

People, you're missing the point. Rock is merely another name for crack, and 50c is a damn good price for a rock that big!
Or maybe the design team are just smoking too much of it to realise how dumb this is.

I hear they're going to put out a huge marketing campaign, and then, just as demand starts in, pull it from the independant retailers and make it a direct order only item!

If any of you have ever had to deal with rocks and their kind, you know that you usually start out with a pebble before "graduating" to the rock. One's easier to paint and drybrush after all. I think they're possibly missing a larger fanbase by not having a starter-pebble kit.

We don't want to get black an blue at a beggar's banquet. We don't want to get stripped at a voodoo lounge. If we let it bleed at her satanic majesties request we're just falling into the aftermath of some girls.
There's no security between the buttons if you eat goats head soup and get sticky fingers.
Let's cross the bridges to Babylon and get yer ya ya's out.

I think a thread like this is needed. A thread to make us laugh when there are so many people being loud and starting arguments over stupid stuff and certain companies "adjusting prices" all the time, this is a great relief. Kepp it going for as long as possible.

Magine, let's not go digging for a deeper meaning here, nothing has a deeper meaning than granite!  I'm just glad that I can now order pre-separated rocks direct, instead of having to buy sprues of the ruined building and converting that rock pile into individual stones.
