Some of you may remember my posts from late winter or early spring as I tried to figure out how best to model troopers from the Tanith First and Only, or my Thunderbolt scratchbuilds for the Phantine XX, Umbra Squadron. And some of you may have seen my questions about Guard tactics or IG army lists. This is where it all comes together. This is where I build the army.

I’ve spent a lot of time thinking about how I want to execute this project, including many nights where my two year old has woken my wife and I up, and I’ve been unable to get back to sleep. I decided it was high time to actually lay out all these thoughts in the form of a plan to get the work done.

You can see my most recent draft of my army list here. It breaks down into 4 main types of troops:
- Drop Troops (Command Squads and Hardened Vets);
- Infantry Squads with Light Infantry;
- Infantry Squads without Light Infantry; and
- Armor

Each of these will be represented by a different Imperial Guard regiment from Dan Abnett’s Gaunt’s Ghosts novels. The Infantry Squads with Light Infantry which make up the bulk and core of my troops will, naturally, be modeled to represent the Tanith First and Only. The Drop Troops will be modeled to represent Phantine Skyborne. The plain jane Infantry Squads will be modeled to be Genswick Rifles. And the Armor will be painted to represent the Eighth Pardus Armoured. Here’s how I plan on modeling each regiment, going from the simplest to the most elaborate in terms of modeling and conversions:

- Phantine Skyborne – My ideas for this are heavily influenced by George Spiggott’s carapace armored IG using SM Scouts as seen here. (Thanks for the awesome idea, George!) For the most part, the conversions on these will be some simple head and weapon swaps, using West Wind British Paras with Berets and giving them Melta and Plasma Guns. I’ve also got a Warmachine Coleman Stryker head which is wearing some cool goggles that I’ve been itching to use and I think a Phantine Skyborne commander would be the perfect use for it.

- Genswick Rifles –Rather than go the Dave Taylor route and convert Bretonnians for Genswick Rifles, in part because I bought a Guard army from a guy for cheap which came with a slew of Cadians, I’ll be using Cadians as the base model for these guys. Instead of using the Cadian heads, which I despise, though, I’ll be setting them up with West Wind British WWII Steel Helmets and Secrets of the Third Reich British Helmets with Gas Masks. With the exception of the shoulder pads, I actually feel like the Cadian jackets look somewhat similar to the thigh-length jackets worn by the British and American troops in WWI. I plan on loading these guys with as many bags and pouches as I can, including maybe making greenstuff shoulder bags for gasmasks. I’d like to try to model the squad sergeants in peaked caps, one with a swagger stick and the other blowing a whistle, but we’ll see how far I get with them. I’m picturing these models as reminiscent of Blackadder and crew from Blackadder Goes Forth.

- Eighth Pardus Armoured – My Leman Russes may be fairly straightforward, although as I’m converting my Basilisks into Hellhounds, I’m considering using one of the Earthshaker guns to make a Conqueror turret on one of them (if I can ever find the friggin’ tutorial that Dave Taylor wrote up about doing such a thing). As mentioned above, though, I’m planning on converting Hellhounds out of my Bassies, using JohnHwangDD’s Hellhounds as a rough guide for what I want to do – I love the look of the FW Hellhounds, so I’m going to be doing something similar, scratchbuilding a backend and using a Chimera turret and Dreadnought heavy flamers for the turret. I’d also like to convert a tank commander up to be Captain Robert LeGuin, briefly mentioned in Honour Guard, and playing a larger role in Double Eagle. If I convert up the Conqueror, he’d be the commander for it.

- Tanith First and Only – This part of the project will be the most ambitious from a modeling perspective. While I toyed around with the idea of using a combination of Wood Elf and Cadian parts, as shown in this thread, it was really Hellfury’s hooded plastic snipers seen here that clinched what I felt most captured the Tanith (Thanks, HF!). The Tanith troopers will be composed of plastic SM Sniper Scout legs, torsos, and arms and hooded Wood Elf heads. Each of the sniper rifles will be converted, removing the power cables and probably the scope and replacing the rifle barrel and flash suppressor with the front end of a Cadian rifle, including part of the Cadian rifle’s stock. I really like the Vostroyan’s lasguns and realized it was the length of them that really appealed to me. By extending the sniper rifle with part of the lasgun, I’ll be able to get this length. Additionally, I’ll be giving each rifle a bolter banana clip to make them more distinctive. I’d like to also make a few using Eldar female torsos and greenstuff cloaks.

I plan on converting up some of the main characters as well – some more or less complex. Rawne will be similar to the other troopers, but instead of a Wood Elf hooded head will have the Eldar bare head and will be holding a knife in his right hand with his rifle slung on his shoulder. Shoggy Domor will also be similar to a normal trooper, but will have a SM Scout head with some greenstuffed/sniper scout goggle augmetic eyes. Colm Corbec will use Catachan arms and will either use an Empire hairy head or the Space Wolf sideburn head with a greenstuffed beard. Gol Kolea would probably be giving a SM Scout head with greenstuff beard. I also want to make “Try Again” Bragg hefting one of my lascannons, though I’m not sure how to make him sufficiently bigger than all the other models (not to mention the fact that Bragg never fires a lascannon in any of the books…but then, the Ghosts are never mentioned using lascannons in general, so I’m going to have to take some creative license.)

If I’ve got enough models, I’d like to convert one to be Flame Trooper Brostin, though since I don’t have any flamers in my list, he’d just be for show. Also just for show and because I don’t like the existing Gaunt model, I’m thinking of converting the Cadian Officer from the Command Squad Box set, doing a head swap with a Commissar to be Gaunt and adding a greenstuff cloak. If I wanted to use him as a JO then, I could, or if I wanted to use him as Gaunt someday, I could do that, too. Along similar lines, I tried to think of what to do for a trooper with the Company Banner and have given some thought to converting up a model to be Milo Brin with the Banner in one hand and his pipes (which, if you read the books are more like bagpipes rather than the pan pipes they gave the GW model) under his other arm. That’d be pretty ambitious, though.
The rough breakdown of models come out to be 3 Leman Russes, 2 (or 3 if I can get my hands on another Chimera chassis) Hellhounds, 25 SM Scouts as Phantine, 20 Cadians as Genswick Rifles, and 40 (+extras) SM Sniper Scouts as Tanith.

Now, some folks may have noted comments I’ve made in the past regarding the painting of Chaos armies and how while I’d tried to build Chaos armies in the past, one of the things that always stumped me with them was trying to come up with a color scheme that would make them look like a cohesive army. While this army will have figures and vehicles modeled to represent four very distinctive IG regiments, I’ve come up with an idea for a color scheme that ties the army together. My paint palette will be limited to black, tan, cream, and a dark, olive green. Here’s how I see this coming together:
- Tanith First and Only – painted with black fatigues and armor and camo cloaks using a woodland pattern of green, tan, and cream;
- Phantine Skyborne – they’re described in Guns of Tanith as wearing tan and cream armor, so I’m going with that, but the majority of them will have berets which will be the green and black weapons;
- Genswick Rifles – these will be primarily green with black weapons. I’m not sure where I’ll incorporate the tan or cream on these guys, but I’ll find a way to include it – maybe equipment pouches and bags;
- Eighth Pardus Armoured – I haven’t decided whether I’m going to go tan or green with these, but I’ll use one as a primary and accents with the other.

I’ve got a good chunk of the models, although I’m waiting on most of the SM Sniper Scouts and my 3rd Leman Russ which I’ve ordered, I need to buy more Wood Elf hooded heads and melta and plasma guns, and I need to make my order to West Wind for all the heads there I’ll be buying. I was hoping to get a couple test models converted up today and be able to post some pics, but I think it may be tomorrow before I'm able to start in.

My wife’s due to give birth to our second child in mid-August (although neither of us think she’s going to make it that long), so I don’t know how much of this I’ll be able to get done before then. After that, it may be a good long while before I can get back to it. But I figure by putting my plans down “on paper” as it were, it’ll give me the incentive to get moving on the project and give me an idea of where to pick up later after I’ve set the project down for a while.

Any additional thoughts or input that folks might have on this project is greatly appreciated!

So, a quick test conversion has proven to be somewhat disappointing and a cause for some minor reconsiderations.

To be terribly obvious, the top gun is a Space Marine Scout Sniper Rifle with its barrel and flash suppressor removed and replaced with the front end of an IG lasgun. The lower gun, for comparison, is a bog standard Cadian lasgun.

On the good side, with a little GS, I think the modified sniper rifle looks pretty convincingly like an IG lasgun. On the bad side, though, I don't think it looks different enough from a standard lasgun to be worth me doing this conversion 40 times for my Tanith. Even if I were to replace the clip with a bolter clip, it'd still look pretty much like a standard lasgun with a different clip. Part of why I'm obsessing about giving the Tanith distinctive guns is due to the description in nearly every Ghosts novel about the original Tanith lasguns having the nalwood stock and body. I mean, I know I can just paint up the Cadian lasrifles to look like they've got hardwood cases, but I was hoping for something that would stand out more.

So now the question becomes do I just use the SM Scout Sniper Rifles pretty much as-is for the Tanith's guns? Or do I replace them all with Cadian lasguns (either by weapon swapping onto the SM Scout Sniper arms or just using Cadian Lasgun arms)? After looking back again at Hellfury's Hooded Sniper Scouts, I can see that I definitely can't just use the sniper rifles as is. No one would believe those are just lasguns.

But so now I'm looking at a game of "what is the fewest number of cuts I have to make?" I'm in the midst of trying to attach a pair of Cadian arms holding a lasgun to a Sniper Scout body. And while I think if I worked at it and used some GS at the points where I have to attach the arms, it could work. But is it worth it? Which is less a hassle? Simply converting the Sniper Rifles? Or converting the Cadian lasgun arms? At this point, I'm beginning to believe that it will be converting the guns, like I originally thought.

I have seen those, yeah! About the only one of their conversions that I like is the Bragg one - I really can't see Rawne as a Catachan like they have him. But yeah, the rules for the extra characters are interesting.

Okay, I didn't want to get finish Friday without being able to post a WIP for my first Tanith - something I tacked together just so I can see how they might look. I decided that it was indeed easier to just replace the barrel on the sniper rifle with part of a lasgun, so went with that on this model. This is intended to be Major Rawne. I need to do some GSing to a few spots on the rifle, but I'm pretty happy with the general size and shape of it with the Sniper Scout body. The Eldar head also goes well on this model, and I hope I can do Rawne justice with his facial tattoo on this head when it comes to painting.

The knife sucks and will be replaced - I didn't even pin it. I was just wanting to bodge something on there for the shot - I was just messing around with converting a power sword to a Tanith straight silver knife to see what I could do. I did poorly. Does anyone have any ideas on what I can use for the Tanith knives? All the IG and Marine plastics are single-edged knives, while the Tanith use more of a dagger-style double-edged knife.

Will be cool to watch this. I'm going to build an outcast IG army around the renegade chaos god "necoho" using wood elf legs, cadian arms/torso, wood elf/chaos marauder cloaks, and flagellant/marauder heads and other bits (like flagellant books and scrolls everywhere). Hopefully I can draw some inspiration from this. As for the guns...how long does it take you to do each one? I think the new guns do add something to the figure but if it takes you 10 minutes for each one then I say forget it. Also, I'd try using a paper clip and a drill to elongate the barrels much like the FW tallarn models.

Hey DBM! Yeah they are quite simple to make in all honesty...

I used woodelf legs for the most part unaltered, with the exception of the legs that make the elves fire high in the air...I try to trim them down a bot so when I put on the Cadian torso, it sits more evenly and I cover the gap with grenades, pouches and or knives....

I use Cadian torso and arms unaltered! Well with the exception of the backpack tab, which I cut off to make room for the Wood elf cloaks, which I cut the round nub down, so that both the cloak and the torso fit well together.

As for the rest of the cloak, I cut the arrows from the quiver and replace them with knife handles from the space wolf sprue.

Then I cut the cadian torso neck down, so that the head sits properly on top of the torso, but I use the standard wood elf hooded head!

Finally I just add a few bits here and there to add some flavor, mainly I add a set of wood elf knives to one side of the main belt around the torso and then I add one other bit, either pouches, grenades or some other such thing at random point on the model. it all depends on the pose of the model.

if you guys are interested I can post more pictures of the squad that I did. I am still in the process of figuring out what I want to do with these guys...at this point I am doing a true scale marine army, which is on hold until I get some more arm bits and I am trying to finish a stock, standard Ultramarine army with 5th in mind...but again I am waiting on the new dex before I go too much further...

if you have any questions, let me know I am more than happy to help in whatever way possible...

oh, for my drop troops I use this guy:

Ack! I have been stymied by just how cool Chaplain Pallantide's Tanith conversions turned out and I'm now waiting for my Ebay lots of Wood Elf heads, cloaks, and legs to arrive so I can start converting my Cadians.

A relatively minor update - I've started getting in the Wood Elf Glade Guard parts to follow Chaplain Pallantide's lead on the Tanith Conversions, so that means it's time to start converting up some new test models. While Major Rawne may not be the most pleasant character in the Ghost's series, I think he's one of the most interesting characters - thus part of why he's among the first of my test models, both using the Scout Sniper model as well as the Wood Elf parts. Below is my conversion of Rawne using a mix of Cadian, Wood Elf, and Eldar bits. Beside him is a test model for a standard Tanith Trooper, made of Cadian and Wood Elf pieces.

Originally, because of the number of Sniper Scouts I would have needed, I'd originally planned to do 40 Tanith and 20 Genswick Rifles. I've got a total of 60 Cadians to work with, though. So after much deliberation and some fortuitous trading, I'm winding up with more than enough Glade Guard legs and cloaks to convert all 60 Cadians to Tanith. I'll be cutting the Genswick from the army. While I think they would have been a neat addition, I think the army will look more cohesive because of the decision.

In my recent trading, I've got a standard Leman Russ, a Leman Russ Demolisher, and a Leman Russ Exterminator. For all three, I plan on magnetizing the sponsons, so I can use them with or without sponsons, but I'm also getting separate turrets for the Demolisher and the Exterminator so I can use them for standard Russes as well. Still haven't gotten to work on the Hellhound conversions yet - I'm waiting on some Chimera turrets to get started.

My wife hasn't given birth yet, but as we get ready for the baby, I've had less free time for modeling. It's looking pretty grim for me to make my July modeling vows.

I've got 8 Tanith converted up so far, continuing in the vein above. I also did my first Tanith w/ Plasma Gun. I originally modeled him holding it like a Space Marine, but it looked way too heavy for him to be holding it like that, so I clipped a GL off an arm and replaced with the PG and matched it with a GL left arm - it looked much better. Once I get more done, I'll GS gaps and deal with some cloak issues. I keep wanting to get photos posted, but I'm moving slower with these guys than I'd like.

I decided as difficult of a time as I was having with shooting my minis earlier for this project that I needed to go back and refresh my memory on photographing minis. I went to Commander Y’s tutorial from B&C and took some tips from that to hopefully make my pics a little better. I know I could still stand to build a simple light box and improve my lighting, but I think these ones are better than my earlier shots. The initial shots were a little dark and I tried to lighten them up after the fact, which has helped some, but some of the details are still a little obscured. Anyway, this shows what work I’ve managed to get done.

As I think I posted earlier, I initially built myself a plasma gunner holding the weapon in a typical Space Marine style - gluing the right hand to look like its hold a pistol grip at the back and supporting it under the barrel with the left. As thin as the model looks (which is what I want), though, he doesn’t look nearly strong enough to be hefting a plasma gun that way. I’ve thought about this with other Cadians that I’ve seen in the past modeled with plasma guns this way. I didn’t want to chop up all my flamer arms for these conversions, as I’d like to have a few flamers in the army, but I realized that I’m not planning on using any GLs, so those arms are fair game. Consequently, I chopped the GL off to replace it with the plasma gun. I like the way the DKoK plasma guns have their handles closer to the back end of the weapon rather than sticking straight out the bottom like the SM plasma guns, so I cut into the back of the gun to be able to mount it in a similar manner to the DKoK plasmas. I then used the GL left arm gripping the side handle to make it look like the gun is appropriately heavy for a non-Marine human. Below is the finished product.

When I assembled the Rawne figure a little bit ago, I’d also assembled a test Tanith along with him. I’ve since built 5 more along the same lines. The following pics show all the standard Tanith Troopers and then the final pic of Rawne with his squad minus the lascannon crew, which I haven’t finished yet.

It’s easier to get into a rhythm making standard troopers and making the lascannon teams requires more fiddling, so I’m trying to do which next. It’s easier to make more troopers (and I’ve got another ~30 standard lasgun troopers that need building), but there’d be a certain satisfaction to having a complete squad built. And then on top of that, my unassembled Leman Russes and Hellhounds-to-be silently nag me from my shelves.

And the baby’s still not here yet…waiting, waiting.

@DBM: Dude they look NICE! Great job DBM, keep it up! I look forward to seeing more Tanith from you in the future.

I like how you did the plasma gunnner, I am probably going to cobble one together with various parts and pieces.

I am also going to watch your work you do with the lasCannon team. I haven't put mine together due to the base size issue in 5th. I might try to make something which can be modified. Currently I thought about making my LasCannon like the remote sentry guns found in the Aliens movie. If you're curious I could post you an idea of what it'd be like...

@brado - It's a cool look, but with my limited time and already extensive converting to do, I don't think that step is necessarily worth my while - particularly as I feel like the less-hefty WE boots add to the stealth and recon feel I'm going for with the Tanith.

@Chaplain Pallantide - Thanks for the kind words. You will indeed be seeing more in the near future. I did up a lascannon team today along with my first female Ghost. For the lascannon team, I made the loader just a standard Tanith trooper like those above, but gave him a set of binoculars. For the lascannon gunner, I used the standard Cadian torso, kneeling legs, and HW gunner arms, then just stuck a WE hooded head on him and a WE cloak on his back. It was pretty simple. My idea for the lascannon team is this. What with the current rules for heavy weapon teams, I'm keeping the loader on a separate 25mm round base. I haven't decide which I'll do yet, but I plan on either:
1) cutting a 25mm hole in the 60mm base into which I can set the loader or an appropriately based plug for when the loader dies (heh, which could be modeled with bits 'o dead loader); or
2) the more simple option of making a ring of GS on top of the 60mm HW base that the loader's base fits into. Then when he dies, I remove him to reveal a smoking crater where he was standing.

I didn't have any WE hooded heads handy that showed the full face when I was putting together the female Ghost today, so I gave her one of the bare WE heads with a braid. Yick. I'm not satisfied with it. I may take a pic for show, but will probably replace it.

Does anyone have suggestions for plastic female human heads that I could use? Or am I going to have to find some metal models to decapitate?

This looks like such a fun conversion project and youre doin great progress. Keep it up!

And bout boots. I think the WE boots adds to the impression in a positive way. Cadian boots would fit if youre going with a more gritty urban feel and not so stealthy.

Female heads? Chaos daemonettes? Sorry but Im out of ideas. Have you looked in GWs bits catalogue? I think there are some slave girls there. Dont think theyre plastic though.

And for your HW team. Id go with suggestion 2. The smoking crater hidden by his base sounds like a cool plan.

I finally got a chance to take pics of the the lascannon team and the female Tanith trooper that I put together (man, at this rate of converting like 3 models one week and then getting pics the next, I should be done with this project in about the year 2040!) I'm pretty happy with the lascannon team, although I need to go back over the lascannon with a knife again (funny how you don't always realize these things until you take pics of them). And as I mentioned previously, I'm not digging on how the WE head turned out on the female trooper. I think I'm just going to headswap it with a hooded head and see if I can't find some better female heads to use for the other troopers.

I got some bits in the mail from a trade, including a SM Devastator lascannon, which is starting to get me thinking that the next conversion I do will probably be "Try Again" Bragg with a lascannon. I plan on using a SM Scout holding a Heavy Bolter as the basis, but will replace most of the HB body with the Lascannon. I'm thinking of using one of the SM Sniper Scout heads with the night vision goggles pushed up on his forehead for Bragg's dust goggles and then throwing one of the WE cloaks on him for good measure. We'll see how it tacks together, though.

I'm also starting to get itchy to build some vehicles, particularly as the Chimera I needed for a third Hellhound arrived in the mail - this was a model that I won in GW's recent trivia challenge drawing that they had. Thanks, GW! So, I'm looking forward to getting started on that.

And on top of all this, my wife still hasn't given birth yet and is really ready to get this boy out - she's saying that just as our daughter has done everything early that she's now predicting that this wait means that our son has come to try her patience. We'll see.

These guys are looking great, DBM. I'm not really familiar with the Tanith novels, but i dig how these really do look like a regiment of troops taken from a specific culture and world. It really gives them a lot of character and history.

Thanks for the kind words!

@quietus86 - I have given some consideration to Commissar Hark as I think he's a really interesting character in the books. At this point, as slow as my progress is, I'm trying not to focus on too many extra characters that I'd have a hard time finding a place in a workable army - I really don't plan on using the Independent Commissars doctrine (heck, I plan on using Gaunt as a JSO with Honorifica rather than his special character rules) so until I get the rest of the army finished, he's a pretty low priority.

That said, I'm nearly finished with a lascannon-toting "Try Again" Bragg model. Years ago, when I was working on an Adeptus Arbites army (using a codex developed by the Adeptus Arbites YahooGroup), I converted a SM Scout with Heavy Bolter to carry a lascannon (at the time, the AA codex allowed Arbites to have lascannon teams).

The lascannon itself was built from a Sentinel multilaser, brass tubing, and guitar wire. I always liked that conversion. Unfortunately, I traded it along with all my other Arbites to Carmachu years ago for some Tau. When I started thinking about Bragg carrying a lascannon, though, I came back to that general design, but using a plastic SM Scout with a Heavy Bolter as the basis. I used a Cadian torso to keep him consistent with my other Tanith, but kept the nice, hefty Scout legs instead of the WE legs to give him Bragg's bulk. The SM Scout arms are also well muscled, which keeps the Bragg representation going. At this point, all I have left to do is GS some dust goggles on a Scout head for him (decided against the Sniper Scout head with the night vision goggles as they were too bulky). I also used a WE cloak on him for his camo cloak, but I'm not happy with how it's flaring out - I think I'm going to have to change it out for a different one. I'll try to get a pic in a day or two for it.

Yeah, now that I'm 90% done with the Bragg conversion and have been reading recent posts on 5E guard, I'm having second thoughts about giving him a lascannon. Ah well, I've at least got enough Scouts w/ Heavy bolters that I should be able to make multiple versions of him with different heavy weapons...

The Droptroop conversion is very simple, yet very successful! Looking forward to paint.
