After sitting and staring at this model for months, I've finally came up with an idea of how I want to paint it, this short log will follow my progress in this experiment. Now you ask, what is the experiment part of it? Well, I'm going to only use metallics and washes to paint the entire model. Inspiration came from Chrono's "speedpainted" daemon army seen here http://warhammer.org.uk/PhP/viewtopic.php?t=49525&highlight=
I don't expect this to take me more than a couple days. The only real problem I've encounted (other than the fact that I built the modek months ago without greenstuff.... ) is that I have to wait for each wash color to dry before I can apply the next and that takes FOREVER
Anyways
Here's the first nights WIP pics
After undercoating in white I applied a thin layer of mythril silver over the entire model....looks like I never even did anything to it, yeah?
And after the first layer of each color wash
Well, off to bed, more tomorrow!

Washes are a bit different to inks, aren't they?
Have you tried both?

Whoa!
That is amazing for first layer of washes.
After looking at your link I may give it a try out some daemon models... damn that will be 4 armies on the go at once. :(

This is actually smart... like when we paint cars with candy.. it gives depth and the metallic paint catches the light for you. GREAT! I'm keeping an eye on this one. ;]

i really like it so far. after you finish, you should do a design on the cloth with regular paint. i know you want all metalics and washes but it would make it looks amazing

I have used both, and both have their purposes...just not in this model. The washes just flow so nicely and do exacty what I want them too.

I was thinking about that too, but I've never really done anything that close to freehand before so I'm a little nervous about trying it

It would be troublesome to do freehand over the metallics anyway, since you won't be able to sharpen the edges of the freehand with the color underneath it.

We'll see how it looks when I'm done and I'll figure out something from there. I know the horses barding is going to need something to fill in all that empty space.

Slight update, this is what I'm going to refer to as the "looks like crap, but trust me on this" stage. I've been using the same technique on my Black Guard and really, trust me, it turns out good in the end!
After applying a second coat of green wash, I've drybrushed the entire model over in mythril silver....again.....
I'll have a second update tonight with more wash layers if I don't get pulled out somewhere.

Alot of the great Art Masters would paint the nudes first as a metallic then wash the skin tones over that. The metallic would show through giving a luminous apperance to the skin tone.

I wonder if that can be applied to a miniature....yet another experiment someday!

At this stage it looks like you painted the whole thing green, didn't like it, stripped it, but didn't get all the paint out of the cracks. I am curious to see how this ends up really though.

I must say I really like the how this is done, pretty clever. I will have to try this out on some of my spare models that aren't servicing me any purpose but dust collecters.

Update for tonight.
(oh and on a funny side note, my other painting project at the moment is a competely NMM Lord Dante of the Blood Angels, only metallics to none at all, lol)
I know it doesnt look like I've done much between the the first post and this one, but hang in there. This weekend will be adding the hilghlights and picking out detail and maybe finishing the mini!
more washes!
Detail shot?
Oh, and I want opinions. Silver trim or Gold? I'm personally leaning towards gold.

Amazing look. I would go for gold trim as it will work better alongside the brown.
Contrary to what you said, there is a clear difference between the first wash and this one. The recesses are notably darker.
Looking forward to seeing the finished model!

I msut say, after that second shot I thought this was going down the toilet, but those washes have really pulled it back. How far through this are you?
I can see why you'd like to use gold, but my gut feeling is to go with silver. As long as gold is you're only other mail colour, it should be fine. Limited pallette my friend, limited pallette...

I really should be spending my time more constructively. |

I think I see what your doing. By painting away all but the deepest recess's the second wash doesn't "overpower" the mini. Loving it and can't wait to see it finished!

Arrrghhh!!! It's driving me nuts! Scrape that rogue sand off of the side of the base. Please!!!
Looking great so far. Can't wait to see it finished. Also, in my opinion, gold trim. I think silver would be too neutral a color. A nice, lustrous, warm gold tone would look sweet with the green, methinks. Of course, it is snowing here...

What did you use for the second layer of washes?
Badab black for recesses and green for the rest of the armour?

It is interesting to see that you got such a green from that really heavy mythril drybrush. If it looks like I think it does in real life, then it would be an almost painful green to look at.

Well, first I would start off with a layer of mithril silver, then I'd apply a green wash over it. Once that's dry, apply a second coat of green wash, then drybrush the whole thing silver. Then give it another layer of green wash followed by a black wash in the recesses.
