Would you think "what a waste of paint", or would you call these a reasonable gaming standard?
They're my first attempt, other than a plastic bloodbowl team, and a tactical squad which I dipped (not worth the time it saves you in my opinion). It's basic, and fast, and it's how I intend to paint the whole army. What's the verdict?

Compared to the armies that I have to play with at my store. I would considered this very respectable. I actually liked them .
Good Job.

Clean job. They'll do fine.
Bit of highlighting on the eye-lenses though would be great. Don't expect you to do something I don't though.

Thumbs up.

Neat scheme. Very clean and effective.
I'm a bit of a newbie when it comes to official tournaments and such, but don't they have a rule that states that you must have at least three colors on each unit of your army for it to be legal? And does the undercoat black count for those colors if that is the case?
Not that I mind, most of my games are friendly anyways, and some people around here actually field completely unpainted armies for years, without even coating them. (which I will never understand)
Anyways, nice work! Thumbs up. ^^

Much better than "...reasonable gaming standard..."! You're way ahead of most people! On a more artistic/modolling note. Contrasting eye/targeter color (like green and/or blue) would help a bunch as would some washes and drybrushing. Personally; compared to GW's hyper reality borderline dayglow paintjobs, I prefer a grittier, realistic approuch and yours have a good foundation for that. Just my thoughts. Overall, really great job for the first time! Well done!

I think that unpainted looks better than undercoated, you can see more and it looks sexy (Compared to undercoated anyway)

I agree with Bunker.
The basic job is good. They've got some contrast from the dip. Good wargaming standard figures.
Too many people have been brainwashed by seeing pictures of Gold Demon winners to think that every figure in an 80 man army needs to be painted to that standard to count. It's rubbish. You only see wargame figures from several feet away on the table.
You can easily put a bit more detail on them later like Bunker said, if you want to.

Thats a fine standard and a good base from which to improve your painting skills (with help from the friendly folk at dakka)
Some limited highlighting or use of washes is all you need, but for now getting an army done to that standard is a fine accomplishment
You may thing its basic but in a world of grey horde it really isnt

I think red is my favorite color to work with. I think it was in one of the Citidel modeling books which used a 50-50 mix of flesh wash and red ink to highlight all the recesses. It worked like a charm, and have used it with my Blood Angels army ever since.
Nice Job, BTW.

Those are not bad at all. Some yellow eye lenses, and some red highlights here and there, and they would be just fine.
I really love red as well. I think by square inch 70% of my mini's are red or white. Granted, the all white Terminators skew that a bit
Oh, one other thing I would recommend is to pick out the purity seals and paint them up. Usually I just use Mecharite Red with a Devlan Mud wash, then a parchment/bone color on the papery bit with a Greytone Sepia wash, then write a little with a technical pen after sealing. You might want to use a lighter red though, given the rest of the terminator. Little details like that though really go a long way towards taking a model from "mass of red" to "Big guy with red armor". The contrast can really be pleasing.

These are totally acceptable as "tabletop". You can quickly up the look a bit by doing the skulls/scrolls in bone, maybe picking out some very hard edges/corners in light blazing orange, and possibly adding some arid grass on the base. These would all be very quick steps and expand the color palette a little bit.
Oh yes, add a drop of black to the bolter barrels.

Thanks very much for all your comments and advice. For now, I'll focus on getting the rest of the army painted, and I can come back and add a few touches later.
Just to clarify, these models have had a wash of devlan mud, and the purity seals are bleached bone, so if there is a three colour rule, I blow that out of the water with an amazing total of 4!

I think they look good! Reasonable, something you'll be able to continue doing, and very coherent-looking. The wash brings out the details on the red well without too much work . I would like to see one other color for more contrast (when you look at them you primarily see just the gun color and the red), probably something bright since the red is fairly dark. But other than that, I think it's great, and I would totally go for the scheme on the whole army

Simple but nice, as others have said.
I'd detail them up a bit more with things like their "belt buckles" just to get some color (other than red) everywhere on the model.
