Modern Warfare doesn't have coop.
Army of Two has long coop, Resident Evil 5 has *really* long coop, Gears has coop, Lord of the Rings: Conquest has coop...and that's all I can think of off the top of my head.

The resident evil games, frankly, blow hard.
Depending on the platform--I'd also suggest Ghostbusters for 360. Amazingly fun coop.

Why?
You cannot move and fire in Resident Evil 5, no. But that adds to the realism. You want to try aiming an AK while running?
And the co- op gameplay is really good. But if either partner dies, you lose, so don't play online with retards.
I would also highly recommend Left 4 Dead. Hell, the game is all about co- op! You actually need your partners to survive (by saving you from Special Infected) and it has infinite replay value because the content of the levels is randomised each time. And versus mode is just awesome.

I think the Xbox 360 version has splitscreen. It's pretty silly though, it's best played online.
Consider some older games. What about Doom 3? I'm pretty sure it's backwards-compatible and the co-op is excellent. The only thing bad about that game is the fact that you can't hold a weapon and your flashlight at the same time, and boy is that game dark.

If the only thing you have in common is a love of vidya gaems, he's no friend at all. Try doing something else other than play games with him.

Well then, fighting games are your best option. Since you have a 360, I would advise picking up Mortal Kombat: Deception (2004, but better than MK: Armageddon) or MK vs DC Universe. Both are good fighting games for beginners because the controls are simple and combos are easy to remember. Note that because DC Comics are a bunch of wusses who didn't want their heroes dying horribly, there is much less blood and gore in MK vs DC and the MK Fatalities don't involve any tearing out of spines or decaptiations. Sad really. If you want to see your opponent get ripped into gory chunks, play MK: Deception instead. Then, you should get Soulcalibur IV (it has Yoda and Starkiller in it!), which has much more complex controls and looks prettier. Each character also has a story mode, so you won't be bored alone.

buy that and and the extra money will go towords mass effect 2(since i think they only give store credit)

Army of Two won't take you very long to beat. It has some neat gameplay mechanics specifically designed for co-op play, but it's a pretty mediocre game overall.
It's worth a rental, rather than a purchase.
A serious suggest that will get tons of hate:
Halo 3
Co-Op campaign for up to 4 players. Play it on Legendary and it will take some time to get through. There are also some achievement related things you both can try to do (playing the meta-score game) and trying to find the hidden skulls. Then you can play the multiplayer, though these days you need most of the DLC to play in any of the playlists.
Alternatively you could wait for Halo: ODST to come out which will feature a co-op campaign, a new multiplayer mode called firefight (My understanding is that it will be like Gears of War 2's HORDES mode), and it will have Halo 3's multiplayer with all the maps (no need to spend money on them.)
Left 4 Dead is good for two, but I feel it's best with four. I believe you two can both play split screen and also go online to find 2 others to play with.
Here is an idea: FABLE 2.
Yep. You can play it co-op. Basically your friend can play with you as your hired mercenary of sorts. You can determine how you split the gold and exp. If your friend makes his own character and you indicate you want this character to be used as the co-op hired mercenary then he will be able to level up and gain skills and gold. Only thing he wont have access to is his weapons, rather he'll just use a generic set that I believe is based on how powerful the hero's weapons are.
This probably your best bet.
Both the DLC packages are well worth it.
Only trouble with the co-op is that camera gets a little wonky, but never bad.

Halo: ODST's campaign is singleplayer only I thought?
But anyways.
The move/fire bit is just one of my annoyances with the Resident Evil games since 2. The story now is so ridiculously predictable it's not worth calling it survival horror or a mystery like Capcom does.
And just a tidbit for you Cheese:
It's not hard running and firing a weapon. It's just inaccurate. They've even gone to great lengths these days to make weapons easier to fire on the move. Assault rifles especially given that they're used in CQB.

Left 4 Dead is split screen co-op. Play it. It is awesome. And if zombies scare you, get over that fear by SHOOTING THEM IN THE FACE.
Halo: All of them are split screen co-op. Except Halo Wars.
Army of Two: Decent replay value from switching weapons and role types with your partner.
Gears of War: Good times. Haven't played the second one, but the first is good.
Lord of the Rings Conquest: OK, not great, but decent.
If you guys have access to XBox Live, download Castle Crashers. It is really fun and completely worth the money.

I highly recommend the original Unreal. That had a LAN co-op mode through the multiplayer menu. You could spend a good week on that one if you haven't played it before. I found the co-op very interesting as it wasn't really factored into the level design. Ammo becomes scarcer, but your firepower is generally doubled.
Splitscreen it is not... but splitscreen is horrible no matter how you do it.
L4D is a pretty good one, but the sequel should be a very refined game, and probably much better.

I truly doubt this.
A sequel less than a year after the original dropped?
I was under the impression L4D2 was mostly filled with the DLC that was supposed to come to the original L4D. I'm sure are some new mechanics, but a sequel so soon screams cash grab to me. I'd be cautious about this until reading some reviews.

It became L4D2, and all of their promises of releasing DLC for L4D was a fat lie. Although they are releasing a community map pack as official very soon. I was the news message for it when i went onto steam earlier today.
