I was recently reading mny SM codex, and was puzzled by something. In it, it stated that the Death Spectres are protecting the Imperium from something in the stars. So, any ideas?

"You have commited the ultimate heresy. Not only have you turned your back on the Emperor and stepped from His light, you have profaned His name and almost destroyed everything He has striven to build. You have perverted and twisted the path He has laid for Mankind to tread. As your own decrees have stated, there can be no mercy for such a crime, no pity for such a criminal. I renounce your lordship. You walk in the darkness and can not be allowed to live. Your sentence has been long overdue, and now it is time for you to die."

It is standard nebulous grim dark doom. Like the C'tan before the necron revamp, GW likes to drop hints about vague terrifying enemies sleeping in the darkness between stars.

The Deathwatch used to have fluff about Inquisition fortresses set to watch various locations incase such evil creatures reawakened to assault the universe again.

Maybe another permanent Chaos Storm like the Eye of Terror.

From what I understand the Ghoul Stars are inhabited by Vampires. Not as in 'Count Dracula', because he's not GRIMDARK enough. They don't burn up in sunlight and they aren't undead. Fluff said they are just carnivorous shapeshifting xenos that have infiltrated every major civilization in the galaxy since the first civilizations came to be. Because of their immensely superior intellect, they commonly ascended to positions of great power and influence in a civilization.

I can't remember where I read it, but this seems to be what the Death Spectres are keeping at bay.

I can't recall ever hearing about where the Zombie Plague came from. I just remember a mention of it's first outbreaks in the 5th Ed timeline.

I think the Zombie Plague is a 'gift' from Nurgle though. I'm pretty sure it isn't considered 'supernatural' in the same sense that the Imperium looks at the Ghoul Stars.

Not sure about the Blood Angels. Baal is much closer to the Maelstrom than to the Ghoul Stars. I'd think they fled there if anything.

I thought that the Blood Angels who gave in to the thirst were kept locked in a tower somewhere on Baal?

Oh, and I found a forum on Warseer that has some info.

erm i know there was an old project for inq. about the "dark emporer" in a nutshell, the imperium of man but s'all vampires so maybe the "non cannon" dark emperium is based of the idea of vampires in the ghoulstars??

also, theres as far as i know, two main plauges theres the:
"zombie plague" = your now a zombie
"plague of unbelief" = something about being really deppressed???

cant remember which one turns your soul/warp essence/idunno into a plague bearer

I think the "ghoul stars" are simply the older stars in the galaxy (I.E. the very first formed, where life was presumably first created, and the old ones' playground).

What could be back there? More necrons? Enslavers? Old ones in hiding? (like say, in Babylon5. NOT ALL of the first ones 'went beyond'.)

I'm OVER 50 (and so far over everyone's BS, too).
Old enough to know better, young enough to not give a ****.

That is not dead which can eternal lie ...

... and yet, with strange aeons, even death may die.

You're right about them being older. As for what's back there, we know there're Thexian Elite (Vampires) as well as Zombies. Probably at least one tomb world though

So, we have:

1) Grendel stars (?)
2) Ghoul Stars?
3) Halo Stars?

Is there a place to find out what's up with each area, as well as other "famous" areas?

It would help in developing the background for my own Space Marine Chapter, actually...

There was some fluff on either the Ghoul or Grendl stars in the 3rd ed Rulebook. I'll see if I can find the part of it that contains info on the Thexians and the Ghoul Stars. Probably something on the Grendl Stars too. I know it had a picture of the Thexians in the small 2 page Beastiary section. Unfortunately my 3rd Ed rulebook is in about 3 or 4 pieces (So much for the value aspect) so finding it all might be a bit of a fething adventure

Thexian Elite=Vampire, huh? That's very interesting...

Vampires were always my favorite Fantasy race. It'd be kinda neat if they threw in some kind of allies system using them. That's just random dreaming, though. It probably wouldn't work.

The ghoul stars make me quite interested. Is it true that the Old Ones used to frequent those worlds?

Things known to be in the Ghoul Stars (just compiled from the Rulebook fluff section.

- The Thexian Elite
- Borlac, Loxatl, and Nicassar races (with their own small empires, apparently)
- Exodite Worlds
- incoming Hive Fleet Jormungandr
- low Dark Eldar piracy levels
- low levels of Necron Activity.
- low levels of Ork infestation.

I think the main thing that's going on in the Ghoul Stars is that the Thexian Elite (a shapeshifter race who are masters of manipulation) are taking over some other alien races that no one really knows much about. It's likely that the Death Spectres are keeping their eye out for the Thexians coming out and kicking up a fuss. From the looks of it, no other races have a serious claim to that region. I'd suspect it's being kept hush-hush as a possible future site of expansion for GW.

I have read somewhere that the Death Spectres are having a tough time from keeping the Tyranids away from the Ghoul Stars as they have power that would be devastating in the hands of the Tyranids, that may be the Halo Stars though, with a different SM chapter?
