I have been tasked with finding some potential fantasy books for a female elementary school aged reader reading at the Jr. High level. Any ideas? Not sci fi but more fantasy.

The demon-child can read now? Oh dear...

Anyway, I'd recommend the Keys to the Kingdom series by Garth Nix. Really good novels, and I still enjoy them nowadays, even though I finish them in about three days.

Don't let her near Twilight though, unless you want to lose your pride and joy.

People are like dice, a certain Frenchman said that. You throw yourself in the direction of your own choosing. People are free because they can do that. Everyone's circumstances are different, but no matter how small the choice, at the very least, you can throw yourself. It's not chance or fate. It's the choice you made.

Kingdom-whats the PG level?

I have a good bit of fantasy but its more high school level.

Twilight makes my butt itch. I have a whole section of classic and new horror if we go that way.

I would say all these books are aimed at low to middle teens, though they also fall into the 'crossover' fiction genre which means they can be enjoyed by adults too.

Very mild sex (snogging, etc.) makes an appearance in the later Potter and His Dark Materials titles.

(Potter was written to be read between the ages of 11 to 17, following the UK state school years.

They are all good books, filled with wholesome values such as hard work, loyalty, courage and so on.)

I read the older of these books when I was about 10-13 and greatly enjoyed them. I read the Potter and HDM as a cynical adult and enjoyed them.

The Hobbit and The Lord Of The Rings might be a bit 'boyish' but are worth considering.

oh and for fantasy, you can't forget the classics: Dragonlace novels, the Shannara books, the Darksword Trilogy.

The other books mentioned above (Dark Is Rising, Earthsea) are recognised as classics of children's literature.

I don't think I would put the D&D and Shannara etc. in the same category. They are just not written to the same standards. The same accusation could be levelled at Potter of course.

She's actually read some Narnia and Hobbit I think.

Anyone read original Oz?

Yeah, whilst I love the D.lance stuff and it is a classic of the genre it isn't quite in the same league as some of the other suggestions. Didn't even know until the google search they'd made a film of any of "the dark" series. I'm guessing it sank without a trace. Shame, it's a great little series. Many a rainy afternoon I lost in those books.

Yes, only the basic Wizard of Oz book.

There was a whole series of Oz books. They are all out of copyright now and can be downloaded for free.

The Borribles books, I love those at that age. By Michael de Larrabeiti, these are muddy faced and scuffed knees books. I think Connie would really enjoy them.

I'd recommend them to adults as well.

Well I wasn't sure what to suggest, but I did do a search on the top 10 childrens fantasy novels and this is what I came out with, hope it helps:

Apart from that I remember enjoying the troll fell books and a novel called,"Blart the boy who didn't want to save the world,"(it was called that if IIRC)when I was younger).

Rick Riordan's "The Lightning Thief" is a great modern fantasy aimed at middle schoolers. Packed with myth, magic, and violence against classical Greek monsters.

PS The key search term for finding librarian compiled lists of books for this
age group is to add the phrase young adult. The book industry also
markets books directly to this age group, but some of those books (just
like for us grown ups) suck.

Some of the books on these lists suck, too, but it's okay. They're young. They
can tough out 50-100 pages and then move on. We older folk are only required
to devote 20-50 pages before we move on

Outflanking

So You Want to Be a Wizard and it's sequels, by Diane Duane. Two ordinary kids, wizardry, saveing the world.
Warning: At least one character dies each book. Not a good book for someone who gets upset when that happens.

The Edge Chronicles, by Paul Stewart and Chris Riddell. A good read, it has lots of odd fantasy creatures, and overall a fun, slightly weird setting.

Pendragon, By D.J. MacHale. Another example of your average teen being sent off on a wild adventure across the universe, you follow his adventures via a series of letters sent home to his friends.

The Belgariad series, by David Eddings. One of my favorite series of all time. Garion is a normal farmboy. An orphan, he lives with his Aunt Pol on a farm in Sendaria. Then Mister wolf turns up, and drags the two of them off in pursuit of a thief, starting an adventure involving knights, monsters, kings, queens and princesses, sorcerers, gods, and a prophecy that predates the world.
Warning: some more mature content, I would recomend it for ages 10+

I also second the suggestions for Redwall and Harry Potter (The Earlier books)
