Well I recently started an IG army. And here I will (obviously) post my progress.
Here's some pics of it's current state.
The skeletons are from the small Tomb kings set.
Until next time.

Interesting start, painted to a reasonable level- any more info about where you intend to go with the army?

Well, I'm calling them the 12th Cadian regiment who come from the planet Galen I which is a Forge World. The planet is like Macragge, a planet with very rocky terrain with small plains and tufts of grass. In the winter it's very snowy.
The regiment is called the 12th because thats the age i was when I started war gaming. Their colors are red gore and adeptus battlegrey. I started the army because I am very interested in the Imperium and SM I thought it would be fun to have a IG army which I can use to play alongside my SM in Apocalypse.
The army will have plenty of heavy troops and vehicles. I'm planning on buying a Baneblade or and/or a Shadowsword/Stormlord set with my Xmas money.

They look pretty good so far. I look forward to seeing more of them. I applaud you for using gold details - I know that it can be a tricky color to use, but with some practice it can be quite effective.
Also, I suggest you try out some of GW's washes, especially for the flesh areas - Ogryn Flesh, or Gryphonne Sepia. They can really add a bit of definition to a flat flesh color.

They look good, but here are some simple tips for improvement:
-Highlight the black, brown and the red areas
-Wash the face with ogryn flesh, and the pants with badab black...
...do that and take before/after shots...you'll be surprised...

Something else to consider is painting the areas you want to be gold Black and then lightly dry brushing the gold over that. But, a great start!

Time for an update!
This morning I went into town to GW and bought this...
LOOT!
After washing my troops I started building.
The HQ squad is nearly finished.
The other 5 troops.
A pic of my faves.
I need to GS the sniper's coat.
BITZ!
The finished squads and my WIP display board.

Nice one. Should compliment your troops well. The cloak and sniper models pretty nice. The HQ is shaping up nicely. Do you have a color scheme for your standard sorted yet?

If your going with the reds and greys for all your troops maybe some regal colors like gold, blues, purples? Would stick in line with the regiment but still be eye catching.

Nice, try and use some washes of Badab Black on those Fatigues, it will bring out the greys. As for the Reds, use a brown ink.
I thik you should try and refine your Layering skills, I found that the tutorial for fantasy Orcs was a great example in the pictures alone.

Devlan Mud and Badab Black will be your best friends.
In any case, your army is looking good so far!
I also agree with Lexx on the golds, blues, and purples. Maybe for sergeants and commanders, but still, it'd be cool.

You're well on the way to having a solid Guard army! I rather like the decoration on the vox operator's base. Here's a quickie tutorial on skin, in case you want to go back over the Guardsmen you've painted.
-Start with a basic skin colour like Elf Flesh; not sure what you're using but it looks fine.
-Gently drybrush on a lighter colour to pick out highlights. I used Bleached Bone.
-Use a Baal Red wash to add some colour to his cheeks and hands.
-Drybrush your lighter colour again if he now looks too red/purple for your liking.
-Wash with Ogryn Flesh, Gryphonne Sepia, Devlan Mud or any other brown/flesh tone. I like to vary this to give my Guardsman a subtle variety of skin tones.
For fatigues, hit them with a Codex Grey drybrush before you wash them. It'll pay off!

Thank for the good ideas and tips about painting. Anyway it's time for an update. I finished the Russ today and have finished my army list and my army is at 487 pts ready for next Wednesday, I might remove the Hunter-killer missile and add a tech priest. The standard bearer is finished now. I had to add a stone so he would stop falling backwards. My first try at GS. Sniper & bodyguard. Until next time.

Mounting a techpriest on that rail could be problematic...
Seriously though, with one tank it really isn't worth it, stick with the missile or spend the points elsewhere.
With the standard Bearer, I preferred him without the big rock- to stop him falling over, glue bits of metal to the underside of the base, lowering his centre of gravity, instead.
Anyway, nice work on the models so far, now get painting!
