Just as the title asks, has anybody else here had a problem with the poor quality of the new Codex books for 40k? When I say poor quality, I don't mean the content, those are top notch these days. I have noticed that the covers of these books has a plastic gloss film on them that frays off after what seems like a few reads. I'm not hard on books, all of my stuff from 2nd edition and on seems to be just fine. These 5th edition style (blue borders) are just terrible. Games Workshop has been very helpful when I call them and let them know about them. They even send me free books for my trouble.

Has anybody else had this problem?

Yeah my Codex's tend to start flaking after a while, it's probably due to some new process/resource they've started to use.

Yep! Happened to my Wife's Ork codex. My Space Marine codex for 4th and 5th is peeling, Imperial Guard Codex peeling, Blood Angel Codex starting to peel, just bought it about 3 weeks ago. GW has been good about sending replacements. Right now I gave my old SM codex to a friend and kept the better one, and I have an extra IG and Ork codex sitting on the shelf for when the originals fall apart. My 5th Edition Chaos SM codex isn't falling apart, mostly because the content is terrible. I miss the 4th edition codex, IMHO, a much more powerful Codex.

"Straight Fething Silver" Tanith first and only

I have a reputation, Modile, a reputation as a fair, honest man who treats his soldiers well and supports them in the face of darkness. Potentially, that reputation makes me soft. It seems I understand failure and forgive it. Some, like Kowle, believe me to be a weak commissar, not prepared to take the action my rank demands. Not prepared to enforce field discipline where I see it failing. I am an Imperial commissar. I will enflame the weak, support the wavering, guide the lost. I will be all things to all men who need me. But I will also punish without hesitation the weak, the incompetent, and the treasonous.
I am a Commissar. I am empowered to deliver justice wherever I see it lacking. I am empowered to punish cowardice. I am granted the gift of total authority to judge, in the name of the Emperor, on the field of combat.

A tad annoying spending over $20 on these books to have them fall apart

Bought a Blood Angels codex 2 days ago, since then a page has come out and the front is peeling off and the funny thing is i've only picked it up about 10 times for a quick browse.

That sounds like my Ork dex when I bought it. I read threw it about 4 times and it started falling apart. Like I said, tad bit annoying. Shoot my brothers SM dex he had to take into a photo shop and have them put it in binder form cause his just fell apart something fierce

My codexes are all fine - and the 'made in China' crack was a bit unfair, as I remember GW printed stuff falling apart when it was all done in England. However, for some reason my cat really likes the flavour of my BA codex, and has chewed all the corners. Despite this, and a certain amount of cat saliva, the binding is still secure.

In my happy place, I'm in my happy place...

GW actually wants you to call and let them know about this, they will usually send out new books if yours have problems. Certain batches had issues due to outsorced printing. The plastic peeling up and pages falling out seemingly at random from basically new books is something they are trying to track. Give them a call.

My SM codex is just fine, w/ the corners fraying a little bit w/ use, but for some reason, 3 pages in the army list section in the back fell out. So I have to have one hand on the bottom of the codex to make sure the pages w/ "Dedicated Transports" through "Legion of the Damned" don't fall out!

Oh good gosh... Kids today!

I've had a few issues with some of the recent stuff, but I remember the days when you, literally, "cracked open" a GW-produced book. Hardbound, soft bound. It didn't matter. My copy of Rogue Trader? Cracked spine from the first time it was opened. The First Book of the Astronomicon? Pages falling out within a few days. Slaves to Darkness? WHFBv3? Ravening Hordes? All fell apart promptly upon opening. Pretty much the first time you opened the book, the spine cracked and had pages preparing to fall out.

I only recently managed to overcome my reflexive instinct of never opening a GW book all the way...

Well, it looks like I got lucky with my Guard Codex (the only one I own so far!). Even though I've played all of one game with it, I am constantly reading it and have lugged that thing on cross country trips, through the airlines, and even down to test depth when I took it to sea with me. So far, it has held up pretty well.

My LRB and recent codexes are all looking a bit shoddy (pages beginning to fall out etc).
But to be fair, my 3rd ed books are like that too; The only 'dexes that seem to be standing the test of time are the supplements with the staple binding- which is of course less likely to collapse.

Someone *always* says this on these threads without appreciating that all the best printing is done in China, that's the way it is for books and magazines today. Products like this fall apart not because they are chinese made, but because they are cheaply made, and that's largely down to GW's discression as to what they are prepared to pay for the work to be done. If they were prepared to pay for a proper job the chinese would give it to them. No one should kid themselves that GW paid good money for rubbish, if they were prepared to pay good money they would either get them printed in the UK or they would get a top quality job from abroad.

In the past the Spanish versions were printed here in Spain, but since the "unification" (the time when bit service dissappeared and the WD started to be just a translated version of the British one) most of the magazines and books have been printed in Poland. My Combat Missions book in Spanish was printed in Lithuania IIRC.

I haven't had any issues with my books. Only my oldest books are a bit damaged, but only for use&abuse. My friend bought SM codex and a couple of pages began to fell few days later.

the binding in my SM codex has deteriated.

almost 1/2 of the units list in the back is completely loose.

Books in general have very bad binding lately.

my sisters "collectors edition" of the Lord of the Rings trilogy fell apart in 2 months(she reads it heavily, but really, 2 months?)

I think book binders are now beng made with an infierior adhesive

Mate of mine VC book is falling apart also.
But you get what you pay for and i think GW aren't paying much to get these printed - wherever.
