Just wanted to start an off topic show off thread for us tarantula owners, ill start off by showing my Grammostola rosea, or Shelob She is 2 and a half years old and is a lovely edition to our family

Erm, the joke was that the Squat tarantula was cute. But the Flesh tarantula's quite cute as well.

Never have been a fan of spiders, though I must say, that does look like a cool little Arachnoid. I also would never let the eight legger crawl on me, but then again I have never been the sibling who is into creepy crawling things

I used to have a Tarantula when i was younger and it lived for about five years. It was a rose-kneed tarantula and it was probably one of the coolest pets i have ever owned. I would provide pics but it was a while ago and i dont think i could find any even if i looked. Yours is pretty cool. My favorite thing was feeding time and when they molted. Pinky mice were its favorite. Whenever it molted overnight it freaked my mom out because she thought it was dead.

I wonder if you could eat pet tarantulas?

Wouldn't it be a suprise to leave a friend with your tarantula and having only one of them left when you come back?

Actually, if that were to happen to me, none of them would be left at the end of it.

For 4 years, before i had my Chilean Rose, I was given an Indian Ornamental Tarantula, he was already 7 years old, and it showed Unfortunately, one morning i found him on his back dead, as a result of a failed shedding

Soon enough, when i can make my room a little more spacious, ill probably invest in a Brachypelma smithi (Mexican Red Knee Tarantula) which are amongst the nicest species i know

I would own a tarantula if my country's laws let me... Yours looks like quite a nice one. I had a big house spider who lived for three years (and she had kids each spring) who we also called shelob, but she was obviously nowhere near the size of a tarantula.

Related: when I was 5 I had a pet funnel web spider called sydney. I couldn't let him out of the habitat though, because they're poisonous and foul tempered.

I hate those things.

My skin is crawling just from looking at those pics!

Well, you can own about 1.3 million sheep, so why can't the guvnermint allow you to keep one hairy thing that repels chicks and a social life?

Exotic species, and all that. I probably could get one if I got a license or some other such sillyness. Frankly it's too much hassle for a pet. If I want something large, hairy and fanged I'll just stick with my free-to-a-good-home, no license required, cat. Although if I ever lived in a desert environment, I could see myself trapping/buying a big spider.

Nice spider. But I've got to admit I've got arachnophobia.

Before i even had a tarantula, i had a crab spider i found in my garden, i kept him alive for a year. He was quiet the docile spider

Cool pet Have you trained her? I've heard that tarantulas can trained.

I personally have no problem with spiders sept when they bite me in my bed

Well, by trained i say by letting your specimen get used to you handling it. Some tarantulas have been know to have personalities with their owners, still, as attached you can get to a tarantula, i can never trust her as she might start to bite or kick hairs.

We have one, very similar to the OP's. His/Her name is "Nid".

We figure it's twenty years old now, at least. When it does pass on, it may take a month for us to notice.

Lifespan wise, yours sounds like a Brachypelma albopilosum or Curly Hair Tarantula, do you have any pictures?

I'll have to get to it later today, being at work.

StasisNid95's pic is pretty close to what ours looks like. About 12 years ago, my brother received it from his friend who was getting married. He had it while they were in college together before that, going back to at least 1990 It got passed down to my son about 6 years ago.

We've gone through two moltings since acquiring it.

wow, that is one beautiful Grammostola Rosea, Mature Female if im seeing right, mine hasnt matured full yet, so seeing your Tarantula got me looking forward for another moulting

plus, it quite strange that a Chilean Rose lived up to 20 years +
, usually Females live up to 10 -15 whilst males 3 - 10. She looks pretty gravid. Good job, love seeing people taking care of such wonderful pets

To be honest, she's pretty low maintenance. About every 3 weeks or so, I'll dump 10 crickets into the aquarium. Usually she'll simply walk over and grab one as casually as we'd grab a beer out of the fridge. We usually keep the seashell in the aquarium stocked with some water.

The molting part was funny. We only had an inkling this was going to happen the last time it happened. She kept flipping herself over on her back. I had thought this was strange and righted her. She flipped over again, at at that point, I figured she was about to molt.

To be honest, I'm not interested in breeding. I'm hoping my brother will take her back someday. With 3 cats and 2 chinchillas, our house is a bit busy as it is.

I'd like a pet spider, but I'm not sure how much work it would be.

I think I might try a pet rat or mouse for I guess my second "proper pet"

I wonder how tasty a tarantula is. It might be very crunchy, and with all that hair...
