A situation developed Sunday while I was testing my shooty ork army, and though it was resolved (not in my favor), I would appreciate to read what you all think about the issue.
Here is the situation: an imperial guard troop unit assaulted the front of a barrage of my (3) zapp guns; all the zzap gun crewmen and the additional grots were (foolishly) behind the zzap guns; the imperial guardsmen also assaulted a unit of lootas; all the combatants piled in; combat ensued; during the pile-in, few grots (the runtherd and maybe one grot) could enter combat because the big guns were in the way.
Here's the question: are the grots that are two inches away from the big guns, which are themselves touching the imperial guard units, allowed to fight? Naturally, the big guns are ignored in combat, but what about the grots?
[By the way, I won the assault, but it took two rounds of combat. Way to go, lootas; often good in a fight!]

No. They have to be within 2" of a Grot in BTB.

The reason is that the guns are completely ignored after the assault move, so you cannot un-ignore them to try and get attacks in!

Let's allow a second situation: the guardsmen had enough assault range to reach the guns, but not enough to reach the crewmen.
Question: seeing as the big guns are ignored in combat, is the barrage not considered assaulted?

You can assault the guns, at which point the crew will pile in. It is only AFTER assault moves are made that the guns are ignored.

So if they assault the guns, would the crewmen rush in front of the guns to engage in the fight?

The crew will pile in as per the rules for piling in, that is, get as many inyo BTB as possible. They won't jump in front of the guns, they will go around them.

@Gwar, gotcha. Thanks for that.
@ Nosferatu1001, Good point. I'm newish to the game.
By the way, to all you haters of the zzap gun out there, my nine zzap guns did remarkable damage to the guard tanks. Ammo runts were a godsend.

Theyre still pretty bad. H owever the S8 gun is pretty good for the points, however points you could spend on that you could instead spend on scoring, reserved grots

Nos meant the Kannon(shell).
The kannon is gerally superior to the ZZap guns far several reasons, not the least of which being the lack of killing Crew.

Re-read his post. Nos was telling you that the Kannon is a better choice than Zzap Guns.

Nosferatu wrote "they," not "kannons," which is an unreferenced pronoun, especially seeing as zzap guns were the topic, so the correction was.... correct. But thank you all for riding to our help here.

Emphasis and red text is mine.
Seems pretty clear to me.
Work on your reading comprehension. His meaning was obviously to everyone but you, apparently.

You know, Saint, his meaning was perfectly clear to me, which is why I corrected the syntax of his post, so that it would be clear to others. For anybody who has written a term paper, and then submitted that paper to a teacher, with an unsupported pronoun, said submitter would discover a few red marks indicating need for correction. Ironically, your edits (in red type no less) reinforce my point, in a pretty direct way and doubtless without your intention. Then further, what proceeds your edits, demonstrates not my problems comprehending, but your want of class and distinction.

So even though it was perfectly clear that he was talking about the Kannon, a S8 weapon, you tried to correct him by saying that the Kannon is S2d6? Right?
So either you didn't understand his post, and you're lying now... or you've never read the Ork codex, and you're making yourself look like an idiot now.
Not great options. Pick your poison, and stick to your guns. Or option 3 will become "you're wrong and won't admit it, so you're trying to lie to us to make yourself look smart."

Looky here. I started this post, and I wrote about the zzap gun. The following poster made a slight detour, alluding to the kannon by mention of strength 8. I put him back on board, by mention of strength 2D6. You're the one who started with the disparagement, and, boy, did you keep up with it; which then forced me to become pedantic over the Internet rather than to smack the attitude out of you in public in front of your friends and family, exactly what would have happened to you in real life. Now that's enough of both you and this conversation.

I meant the cannon, and I thought this was clear from writing "S8 gun"

Nosferatu, you're fine, and it was clear (I just wanted it pointed out it was the zzap guns I was bragging about despite your segway post), and mistakes happen. I just despise the sort of behavior from Saint. But I'm willing to let this rest now. I read some of Saint's previous posts: he seemed reasonable enough, and something of a thoughtful writer; I will assume he just didn't read the whole post, and perhaps try to enjoy his contributions in the future.
