So yeah I'm supposed to make some sort of an essay about what kind of stereotypes people have about Finland and Finns in general, so if you could kindly help me and describe a typical Finn or Finland as a country based on what you know or ^^

Thanks!

Wow,
I'm not sure there's much around here. I'm in the Pacific NW of the US and there just aren't many Finns around here. Mainly Norwegians and we've never thought badly about you folks.
I guess the only one I can think of is that depression is abound in the country and a high suicide rate.
Finns can also be seen as stand-offish or rude because they are generally more private than other cultures.

Oh and that you're space aliens because of the large linguistic and genetic difference you have from the surrounding people.
Plus you're crazy bad-arse for holding off the Russians during WW2.

I don't know I've ever met a Finn. I knew a Japanese girl once who decided to go and study Finnish. She was fond of penguins.

I gave my daughter the Moomin Cookbook.

I'm writing a load of fiction. My latest story starts here... This is the index of all the stories...

The only stereotype I have heard of is being very sexually active (i.e. very open, many partners, etc.) compared to like, North Americans.

I haven't really heard that many other stereotypes, but I tend to have a very positive view of Fins and Finland. I don't know a ton of Finnish people, but of the Finns I do know, they are all some of the coolest people I've ever met and I consider all of them friends. For that reason I probably tend more to avoid seeking out or listening to stereotypes about them, although I'm sure there are plenty out there.

It probably depends on where you look too. In the U.S., people probably don't think of Finns very much and aren't familiar with as many stereotypes. On the other hand, I wouldn't be surprised if there were some very negative stereotypes of Finnish people in Russia.

I think the worst I've heard is that you Finns are European. I know it isn't a very nice thing to say, but it is just what I heard.

Hmmm I'm not too sure that there are any typical Finnish (hope thats the right term) stereotypes.

I guess that we assume that Finland is all snow and pine trees, where the people all have pale skin, blue eyes and pale fair hair.

Wait Finns have a stereotype? I guess that answers the question of whether Finland is a real country or just a practical joke by the map makers.
I still say Pics or it didn't happen!

The only thing that springs to mind is 'boring' - but that generally goes for most northern European countries.

Not saying that it's true, just that it's a stereotype.

Like all scandinavian countries my first thought is salty licorice. I've actually been to Helsinki (airport only though), but it was rather featureless except for lots of moomin merchandise and the usual airport stuff. Saunas and a very distinct language structure would be the only thing I really associate with Finns above all other nations.

My cousin married a Finn, she's a pretty girl and quite sweet, but very boring. I guess that's how I think of Finns, now.

Some of your WWII antics were incredible, so I guess that sort of fits in there as well, somewhere.

“We may observe that the government in a civilized country is much more expensive than in a barbarous one; and when we say that one government is more expensive than another, it is the same as if we said that that one country is farther advanced in improvement than another. To say that the government is expensive and the people not oppressed is to say that the people are rich.”

Finland, Finland, Finland
The country where I want to be
Pony trekking or camping
Or just watching TV
Finland, Finland, Finland
It's the country for me

You're so near to Russia
So far from Japan
Quite a long way from Cairo
Lots of miles from Vietnam

Finland, Finland, Finland
The country where I want to be
Eating breakfast or dinner
Or snack lunch in the hall
Finland, Finland, Finland
Finland has it all

You're so sadly neglected
And often ignored
A poor second to Belgium
When going abroad

Finland, Finland, Finland
The country where I quite want to be
Your mountains so lofty
Your treetops so tall

Finland has it all

So what's up with Finnish people loving saunas? I heard some crazy stat that there's one sauna for every two people in Finland.

That and Simo Hayha are the two things that come to mind whenever I think of Finland.
