It's much, much cheaper to start getting into Warmachine. But in the end it comes out to a similar, but slightly cheaper, cost if you want to get all that's available for your army.

You're also in luck. The best way to start playing Warmachine is to pickup one of the starter boxes that recently released to stores. They contain a warcaster and roughly 11-15 points of jacks. They also contain the quick start rules for the game, which is almost the same as the full rules. These boxes cost around $50, and a standard game is 35 points worth.

After trying that, you can choose to get the full rulebook and start expanding your army if you enjoy it.

If the starter boxes aren't to you liking, it's just as easy to look through the factions and try to find what appeals to you. After choosing a faction, consider what warcaster you want to play next. Each warcaster has a significant influence on how an army plays, so much so that simply changing warcasters can make your army play like an entirely different army.

I'll second the starter boxes as the best way to start. The new plastic ones are wonderful, although the metal Hordes starters are still great (although you will want to murder whoever sectioned out the Skorne beasts). After that, Prime Mk 2 (or Primal Mk 2, for that matter).

As for a good army for a beginner, they're all rather balanced and easy to get into. Cryx and Circle are slightly trickier due to their glass cannon play styles, but even then it's not too hard to get the hang of 'em. Basically, pick an army you like the looks of and go from there.

Might I also reccomend looking at http://battlecollege.wikispaces.com/ if you want a fairly well compiled synopsis of what units and armies do what?

It's been an invaluable resource for my Khador list building.

Things I've gotten other players to admit...

Alright thx for some help but would all i need to get is a starter box of a warmachine army to start playing

Thats all you would need at a low point value.

Also of note, not every faction has a starter box, specifically none of the mercanary factions.

I would highly recommend the army book for whatever faction you pick, it will give you the states for all the models in your army as well as the Tier Lists.

Most tournements are played at 25, 35 or 55 points.

As previously mentioned, WarMachine and Hordes are magnitudes cheaper than WHFB and WH$40K. The rules for WM/H are much tighter, and more condusive of competitive play. Hence you will see a lot more tournies, Streamrollers, etc. at your FLGS. It is a great game system if you like a more tactically competitive game rather then metagaming and list building.

bubbaduck76 wrote:And What is the best way to get started
Although I agree with my fellow posters that the starter box is a great way to get into the game, I would also recommend that you download and review the quick-start rules, and get in touch with some local gamers and ask for a quick demo game. 15-point games are very quick and they will give you an excellent feel for the game without the financial investment. Just make sure you choose the right person to demo the game...

bubbaduck76 wrote:whats a good army for a beginner
Hopefully the demo games and starter rules will give you a chance to make an educated decision on which armies interest you or gain a deeper understanding of your play style. Afterwards, I'm sure a lot of people on Dakka and at your FLGS will give you some army suggestions.

Slow + Sturdy = Khador
Fast + Glass Cannons = Cryx
Denial + Combos = Menoth
Shooty + Specialized = Cygnar

Armies in WM/H are significantly less specialized then 40K, so the typically shooty Cygnar can build an equally brutal hth list as other melee specialist armies. I wish I can say the same for armies like Tau in 40K.

Based on the generalizations above, I would say that Khador is probably the most forgiving starter army. Although cheaper than WH, the hobby is by no means "cheap", so I would still encourage you to plan "long-term". My $0.02...

What do you mean by glass cannons and if I have narrowed down my choices to either cryx or menoth and for malfiux i play resurrection which would you guys represent and also what do you mean by denial?

Cryx hits hard, but is generally unable to take hits. They compensate for it by either having swarms of stuff, or by having a high defense stat, which prevents them from being hit in the first place.

Menoth is the faction of "You can't do that." They've got a hell of a lot of stuff that prevents your opponent from shooting, from casting spells, etc. They're incredibly synergistic, which is both a boon and a bane: On the upside, your models will benefit from an obscene amount of buffs. On the other hand, if your opponent is smart he can dismantle your support units early on and greatly reduce the effectiveness of your army.

OK so if i play resurrectionists in malfiux and i like how they can summon models ect. would you recommend cryx or menoth more highly to me.

Endgame that link was very helpful and i have decided to go with menoth thanks again.

There's not too much in the game that can create new models out of whole cloth. However, Cryx has a lot of stuff that can return from the dead (again), or create new thralls from their kills. If you're really into the summoning theme, Goreshade the Bastard might be a good choice, as he not only lets you sacrifice models to teleport warjacks to the front, he can summon an entire unit of Bane Thralls once per game.

Protectorate has a few models that can convert enemies into new troopers for you, but nothing like Cryx.

Yeah but i think i like the concept and the models even more of menoth even though that one lich king model from cryx looks amazing and thanks for your thoughts as well

Which Lich Lord? There's three, with another potential 10 to be released.

The Lich Lords beckon...will you answer the call?
...we have cookies and muffins too, then there's the 'Great Rack' of the Broken Coast to explore

This is a little story about four people named Everybody, Somebody, Anybody, and Nobody.
There was an important job to be done and Everybody was sure that Somebody would do it.
Anybody could have done it, but Nobody did it.
Somebody got angry about that because it was Everybody's job.
Everybody thought that Anybody could do it, but Nobody realized that Everybody wouldn't do it.
It ended up that Everybody blamed Somebody when Nobody did what Anybody could have done.

This isn't 40k pal, and all we have to do is kill your jack anyway and then resurrect your corpse. Hell, if you're integrated into a jack then you've just given us a Khador jack, powered by our superior fuel source and with your undead ass piloting it! XD

You see though, the thing is eventually Karchev will die no matter what, whereas the vast majority of Cryx is already dead. Even if we never strike the killing blow, we are masters of the attrition game and we have all of eternity to wait for you...
