I typically find the time to paint....
All the time, im a freaking hermit
Sometimes, in between juggling a job/career or girlfriend
Once in awhile, in between a job and/or school
Rarely, I have a job/career, children, and a nagging ball an chain!
If I keep it real quiet, I pull an all nighter..the only way to get some silence in my house

I was wondering the same thing my self, as well as how much game time folks get with the painted army. I for one have not played any game with my army as it is barely assembled let alone painted.

I do a lot of painting between juggling job/girlfriend/frineds/role-playing/gaming. Problem is I'm painting an Ork horde and I have lots of models to paint so I end up rushing so I'm not getting time to learn to paint properly :(

Apologies for talking positively about games I enjoy.

--- Heh, well personally ive been painting the same Blood Angels army since the beginning of April. Ive made a ton of progress on it (considering how busy ive been). I expect to have the initial core of the army complete by the end of the year. Im not the type of person to send an unfinished product to the battlefield....whats the point? Not ot mention the last time I actually played the game was about 8 yrs ago.

So right now it looks like this for me:

- 2 tact sds
- 1 dev sqd (10 man)
- 1 Sanguinary grd (5man)
- 1 death company (5 man)
- 1 assault sqd (10 man)
- 1 commander + brother corbulo + lemartes + honor gard
- 1 assault terminator sqd (5 man)
- 1 land speeder
- 1 Dreadnought
- 1 Rhino

( still left to finish, Term chap, term lib, 2 land speeders, land raider crusader, rhino, whirlwind, and a baal predator)

Battles/Missions played:

did I see role-playing thrown in there? Well for your dignity and respect i hope the roleplaying your referring to takes place in the bedroom as opposed to being some Larp master out in a field somewhere!?!?!

It's funny, now that the fall lineup on TV is in full swing I actually have more time to paint since my wife watches absolutely DREADFUL tv. She wants quality time when I get home from work, but she doesn't want me to ruin her shows by making fun of the characters/plot while it is on. The compromise is that I get to paint my armies in the living room while she gets to watch her garbage shows.

When nothing is on TV I tend to spend more time with her hehe.

I need to figure this out . . . cause I have the same exact issue, but she wants me to watch the bad shows with her . . . in the mean time, she wont spend 10 min watching football with me

The same for me really. Either painting or wasting painting time by grazing the interweb. . .
I usually have 4 (infantry) models on the go at all times. Painting does chill me out and I take my time doing it deliberately. I find 4 models is the optimum number to have on the go, 3 are drying whilst I am doing the other.

I wake up an hour or two before my wife and paint then (while catching up on my favorite TV shows at the computer). Then, if I'm done with all my classwork when I get home from work-work, I'll paint. I've pretty much sacrificed computer games for Warhammer completely, though. I don't know what I'm going to do when I have a kid, too.

I don't what she's watching, but it certainly can't be anywhere near as painful as having to watch football. Well, unless its Rachael Ray.

EDIT: To answer the OP: Whenever I find the time. Which means that sessions are rare, but tend to be long. I might get in 1 or 2 days a month, but it'll be a good 5+ hours on the days I can.

I can relate to this and to spending quality time watching bad television with my wife. I think everyone who loves to paint has that perpetual back burner in their mind...whenever they are doing something they dont want to be, you are always thinking about your troops back at home or acrossed the room.

I have sacrificed basically all other hobbies, video games (have a ps3 im considering selling now), rc cars, magic, everything. I have also cut back on watching sports....but its paying dividends when I see my army coming together

sigh......I wish my wife liked football as much as I do .... GO SEAHAWKS!

yeah, go Seahawks!!!

i voted hermit, 'cause i paint everyday (more or less)...
luckily, painting minis is my job, so the girl can't really complain, much...

she does hate football, but will happily watch The Bachelorette...
what a shame...
fortunately, we don't have a TV, so it's all movies on the computer...
of course she doesn't find it very romantic when i put on Black Hawk Down for the 20th time, and zone out on a mini's face for 2 hours...
go figure...

cheers

I need a 2-part poll, one half for frequency of painting and the other for the reasons. I went with the middle option, as school and job-hunting are my major duties (living with your girlfriend means you don't have to ditch her to paint ), but if I paint an hour or two in a week, it's been a good week.

My son goes to preschool on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9am to 12pm. I take my minis to my local coffee shop during those times and spend time assembling and/or painting. I often do my painting/assembly in front of the TV after I get home from work at night as well.

painted: 12 dryads,9 glade guard,2 glade guard scouts.
assembled but unpainted: 2 glade guard and the lord's bowman, 8 glade guard scouts, sexy elf lord
in the box: , 8 glade riders, , one female spellsinger, Orion, Ariel, the faerie queen. SOB immolator, 15 sisters.

When life is going on with a normal routine (which is preferred, but rare for me), I get about 12+ hours a week of painting done, but I always try for more.

Luckily for me, my girlfriend doesn't watch any bad television shows because she doesn't watch TV at all. Neither do I, for that matter. To be more specific, I only watch DVD/VHS/whatever, and then it's either documentaries, independent films, or odd old TV shows (Dark Shadows is what we are currently watching). It's generally not longer for 2-3 hours either.

Having a significant other with hobbies other than being clingy and boring really helps with getting things done.

Paint while you watch TV with the family/during sporting events.

My kid is on a swim team, which is 3 hours of waiting 5 minutes of watching him swim. I painted 2000 points of BA the last swim season, next year I am doing IG.

Right now, no painting at all, I am working on converting Genestealers to Bloodletter Daemons, painting will come later...much later. However, right now the wife is obsessed with watching all 10 or 11 seasons of Law and Order SVU, so after the kid goes to bed, I usually have 2 to 3 hours of work time before bed. Not sure what I'm going to do when she gets done with SVU, hopefully she'll want to catch up on Army Wives or some other crap. I hope she doesn't want to start catching up on Dexter or Chuck, 'cuz I'll want to watch those, but for now, I get between 12 and 20 hours a week. Good grief! Someone pay me to do this for a living so I don't have to waste time at work!

I paint either during my lunch break, or when my loving wife watches our baby so I can paint. So ball and chain doesn't define her well. Without her I would paint ZERO at the house. An hour a day is a luxury! Especially since I'm in grad school as well. Should probably read while painting...

I get 4 weekdays a month when I'm off work and the kids are at school, so I get the morning to myself to paint while my better half has a well-deserved lie-in.

Other times, it's when she's watching crap TV in the evenings and I can bust out my daylight lamp.

Not only do I have limited time to paint, but I suck at it. Nowadays I usually just pay people to paint my armies for me, otherwise I'll never get it done. The first army I had was IG about 6 years ago and I got about 10% of it painted in 3 years. At that rate I may have died of old age before I finished.

I like these responses. For the most partm they make me grateful for the time I do get to spend painting. I try to squeeze in what I can....usually that involves about 10-14 hours of painting a week. My work really frees me up because i do mos tof my studying there and I also assemble all of my models at work...I dont waist time doing that at home. Right now im assembling a rhino at work. I just HAVE to know! Where do you work that they let you assemble models? And are they looking for new people? I can re-locate!

Haha! I work at Chase Bank as a business banker. I work out of a call center though, so I dont actually see people in person (yet I have to dress professionally for some dumb reason). So for 8 hours a day (sometimes longer) I scour the pages of Dakka, buy 40k off of ebay, and assemble all of my minis (and vehicles). Im finishing up assembly of my san guard now, then its on to a warwalker! Personal cubicles with highwalls = quiet time to do assembly
