I can not decide whether to go with a fire army like the Sallys or a sneaky face ripping army like the Raven Gaurd. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Salamanders have cool fluff, a nice color scheme, and top-tier rules in the form of Vulkan. Pretty much all around awesome.

Go Raven guard! :-) they are not all that often used and have some good special rules that you just don't see all the time, they can certainly be a suprise for those not initiated with their tactics, more than one 'powerful' army has crumbled against the sneaky speed and 'suprise here we are' moves! they may only be marines when it comes to cc but Shrike can make your enemies sweat. i've got some (which i'm selling I think) and they've been awesome fun to play with! :-)

Both are pretty sweet. But I think Salamanders are much more common than Raven Guard. I am the type of person that chooses the army based on look and characters rather than tactics...Im more into the presentation of the army...so personally would probably go Sals. Just depends whats more important to you I suppose....gameplay or hobby?

I'm a fan of both, by honestly Shrike is my favorite character in the vanilla codex, and while I prefer the Salamanders' color scheme, Shrike's rules appeal to me more as well. Raven Guard may have a boring color scheme, but other than that I prefer them.

Not by much.

But there it is.

A proper Vulkan list is probably the most competitive build in the SM Codex, so Salamanders have that going for them.

However, the Raven Guard are just flat-out cool in fluff terms, and Shrike has the best quote in 40K history.

Really depends on what you want.

"Most competitive build in the SM Codex" might be a bit of an overstatement. That's a codex with a LOT of good builds.

But there's no doubt a Vulkan list is more effective than most Shrike lists.

Go for it! That was my problem....you look at different codices and colors schemes, you start reading the fluff and pretty soon GW has you hooked on several armies you want to build. Its a shame that GW doesnt also sell 'spare time' to build and paint all of these minis!

in 2008, when i conned the wife into letting me buy the Battle Company box set (first ever GW purchase.. .what a mistake) my plan, was to sell off a couple of the rhinos, buy a bunch of Drop Pods (especially when rumors were confirmed that they were indeed coming out) and run a dual chapter, combined force army of Salamanders, and Raven Guard. I was going more based on color scheme, and fluff (as i dont use special characters)

Thing is though, if you look at my shelves now.. there are no RG and no Sallies, because they are all Iron Snakes. Try out a couple test minis, see if you like how your painting style turns up on those minis. You may find that while the RG is a "boring" scheme, you can make them look 10x better than your salamanders. You may also find that you just want to use the special characters rules, and run your own custom (or other GW created) chapter. But really, i would suggest you do a couple of test minis.

Wow, my friend is in the same predicament, but he's leaning towards Ravenguard. I voted for Salamanders just for the fluff. He'stan's quest to find the 8 magical relics sounds like a JRPG plot. I wonder if he's the child of destiny too...

Vanilla marines suck... You want a real challenge? Go Dark Angels. Then, in a couple of months (hopefully), when GW finally releases a new codex for them, you can already have the models set up for them, and everyone will say, "hey, you have the new uber-army!"

Ultramarines. You can do any play style of army and it still fits the fluff.

Fluff of... what? Al the OP asked was which chapter he should play, so to what fluff are you referring?

The Ultramarines. They do everything well and are leaders in it according to their fluff. OP is building a salamanders or raven guard army, so it will have some fluff in it because it will be themed on one of the ideals of those chapters.

IN all seriousness, pick the chapter you like more. If you cant like their story, you wont like playing them.

I'd have to agree with this. Do one of the lesser known chapters and surprise people.

As for what you're asking, I like both chapter's fluff to be honest. I like the look of the Salamanders and the fluff of the Raven Guard and vice-verse. Heck mix em both up a little bit. (though I don't know how'd that'd work so I'll leave to those with more experience than me ).
