From Lexicanum:

The Barghesi are an alien race that inhabits the Grendl Stars, a constellation in the Eastern Fringe.1 They are known to be 'hyper-violent'.

According to Imperial Records, the Iron Lords Marines Chapter proved instrumental in confining the Barghesi to the Grendl Stars, and also in preventing the destructive biological potential of the Barghesi from being harvested by Hive Fleet Kraken.2

Well I am going to do my best to produce a converted army based on the new Tyranid codex for the hyper-violent Barghesi.

Fluff is on its way, and modelling should begin in the new year and during Christmas..

Having searched the internet I have seen two different Barghesi armies both very different from each other and I hope to do something a little different again.

I have based my ideas on the mythological idea of the Barghest (a black dog/wolf that roams Yorkshire disappearing into the mist) so lots of beast like heads on powerful ripping open bodies (hence the chosen codex of Tyranids)

First up are these fabolous heads from MicroArtStudios http://www.shop.microartstudio.com/nezumi-heads-chem-p-415.html
which I feel would look great mounted on GW crypt ghouls http://www.games-workshop.com/gws/catalog/productDetail.jsp?prodId=prod1050048&rootCatGameStyle=

Minotaurs should be great too, ditto rat ogres, wolves and dogs of all varieties, skaven clanrats, warhounds, dire wolves, even ogre bodies with some work done on them..

Any ideas and suggestions are of course appreciated... fluff will go up tomorrow once its written

First bit of fluff up:

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Barghesi, contained for Millennia amongst the Grendl Stars, in the Eastern Fringe (near the Tau Empire, Black Templars, Ultramarines and Hive Fleet Kraken), have finally broken free. They are an incredibly violent natured race, rumoured to be an abandoned experiment of Khorne. Alongside their bloodthirsty nature they have been gifted with a natural ability to shapeshift. This is a great threat to the Imperium, as Hive Fleet Kraken has tried to absorb the DNA of the Barghesi for many years, potentially disastrous.

Barghesi are bred through asexual cloning, adults will secrete the necessary DNA into corpses of their victims, contained in parasitic pupae. The pupae will absorb nutrients from the corpse to allow the rapid growth of the young Barghesi. At an early age infant Barghesi are not able to shapeshift and assume their natural form of a hairy quadruped often adorned with horns, tusks and rows of sharp fangs. As they develop, young Barghesi begin to stand upon their 2 hind legs and mould themselves useable hands to hold weapons and tools along with further spikes, tentacles and any other appendages that may aid the tracking and killing of prey, whilst losing some of the fur indicative of infant Barghesi.

A mature Barghesi finally masters its shapeshifting abilities to an extent of being able to blend seamlessly with technology. Some may simply imbed large guns into their chests or backs, allowing their arms free to rip prey open in their preferred style. Some Barghesi meld themselves onto tanks or other large pieces of machinery. In this fashion they have been able to extend their reach beyond their homeworld “Barghest”. Stranded settlers from the outskirts of the Tau Empire were unlucky enough to experience the horror of being hunted after they landed on the planet. Their ships were incorporated into some of the larger beings allowing them to travel to neighbouring Tau and Imperial worlds and develop further through slaughter.

The recent presence of the Iron Hands Space Marines Company has enabled them to develop even further than ever expected. Grotesque, feral, almost beastlike versions of Thunderhawk Gunships and drop pods descend from the skies spilling vicious Barghesi warriors from their bellies. These ships are controlled by mature Barghesi seamlessly integrated with all of the ship systems. Worse still, news has just reached Ultimar that the Iron Hands Mothership has been overrun and the process of integration has begun.

Although the Barghesi have no verbal language, they have a dulled psychic link that allows the larger and more mature individuals to keep smaller, more feral Barghesi in order. Integrated technology is also operated through the natural psychic powers of the Barghesi, where sudden and frequent surges of anger cause weapons to fire and mechincal legs to surge forward. Younger Barghesi left alone can find it difficult to control their actions and often resort to an animal like state.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Any thoughts are appreciated, plus any ideas of large muscular bodies that GW produce in plastic

Gors? Sorry to be a pain but.... You got any links for the other armies you mentioned finding? You have made me curious. Good call on 'barghest' as 'Grendl' is also anglo saxon so it was probs what GW was going for...

The first person to attempt Barghesi http://www.wargamerau.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=51921 some really interesting interplay and contrast to tyranids that I hope that my fluff also has elements of..

The second and last I found, http://www.minus1mod.com/smf/index.php?PHPSESSID=f220b2a5fc946cf39fa7fd20f5e2a2ae&topic=643.0
Some similar fluff ideas to myself, but not sure how I like the blue.. given their early links to khorne, I'm seeing some red/black/gold/brown Barghesi

@ Perkusitin: Cheers on the Grendl tip, forgot about the monstor in Beowolf.. fits what I am going for brilliantly these few lines do:

Every nail, claw-scale and spur, every spike
and welt on the hand of that heathen brute
was like barbed steel. Everybody said
there was no honed iron hard enough
to pierce him through, no time proofed blade
that could cut his brutal blood caked claw

ie: I'm all horns, metal and crazy unkillable, come get some, mwahaha

Picking up some crypt ghouls on Tuesday, and beastie heads on order

I do like the spine fist heads on the first ones. Judging from the polymorph idea you aren't going orky with tech, which i think is a good thing. Although the tyranids have weapon symbiotes an obliterator style of weaponry would be cool.

Sounds like a fun army - your challenge will be to have enough unifying features in it to make it look like they are all one race and not just a random collection of mutants and machines. I'd pick a few features (like a head) and use them in every model.

@Perkustin: Yeah he really did make some sick models, also love the half tank half beast on the second guy's. Defo not going to be orky, think more upright chaos warhounds with mutations linking them into stolen tau and imperial weapons

@kestral: Totally agree I am going to try and stick to a long nosed rat/alsation style face, so lots of skaven plague monks, nezumi (link in first post) and rat ogre heads, also obviously very excited about the new HPA http://darkfuturegaming.blogspot.com/2010/12/new-hellpit-abomination-model-possible.html#more also older models such as http://www.games-workshop.com/gws/catalog/productDetail.jsp?catId=cat480009a&prodId=prod1120103&rootCatGameStyle= for extra heads. I also have some beastmen minotaur heads on order from a bits site. I think the biggest problem is that most useful models in the Tyranid dex are based on termie bases or bigger so I will need more heads and bodies than just rat ogres...

Going to start by making this 600 point list before cranking it up to 1000pt with more hive guard/gaunts/tervigon

Prime (lashwhip bonesword)
2 Hive guard
20 devilgaunts
Tervigon (catalyst, regen)

Only firm decision I have reached is about the gaunts and hive guard:

Gaunt shall be crypt ghoul bodies, nezumi heads (green stuffing some fur at the join) and using tau weapons to represent the devourers. Fleshborers will be represented by imperial weapons (lasguns, bolt pistols, bolters, laspistols, etc)

Hive guard shall be rat ogre bodies with ?minotaur head? to make them look not just like space skaven, using assault cannons to mould onto the wrists and that super cool double handed arm to cradle the guns

Tervigon is either going to be an HPA conversion (if the kit is good) or a soul grinder

Still looking for Tyranid warrior ideas (ogre bodies maybe, quite chunky so accounts for 3 wounds, but the same size as warriors, could belly mount some guns, or possibly minotaur bodies)

Anyway I'll throw some first pics up tomorrow of progress with my headless gaunts

Well that took a few more days than I thought... here are some termagaunts that are about half finished...

greenstuff is not great, never really used it before so will shave it down today and make it better, and finally the heads have been posted from MicroArtStudios so some heads should be arriving soon..

and finally what I shall be using for hormagaunts, nothing too exciting, just warhounds, but fit well with the general fluff

any advice on greenstuff will be readily listened to, its bloody horrible to work with

Sticks to tools, so I use water and it doesn't stick to model.. very annoying, can't seem to get it thin without it just breaking apart hence the rather large tentacles I will have to scale back with my craft knife and files... is only my first time though, so I assume this will improve with work..

Wow its been a long time since I've posted, work/life balance has gone way over to the work side..

Have made another 5 "termagaunts" this time with imperial pistols that look a good sight better

And have applied some paint to my 10 "hormagaunts" which I will post once some sort of progress has been made

Most of my time has gone into producing this beast below, representing a tyranid prime with bonesword and lashwhip. I really wanted to advance the idea of the Barghesi being able to incorporate themselves into other races technology, so you will notice the Tau burst cannon aloft above him.

Many thanks to wolfshadow, I am feeling MUCH more comfortable with GS now and am looking forward to converting a Tervigon from one of those lovely Hell Pit Abomination boxes

More to post when paint hits model, but any easy to do suggestions would be appreciated before I undercoat

I think you could use something a bit more substantial on the end of that chain, it doesn't make much sense being that straight if it only has one slightly bigger link on the end of it.
Maybe add some kind of blade or odd chunk from a Tau tank?
I really like the idea of using existing weapons on these guys!

I'll be watching!

Did think of that but it is likely to snap with not much effort, so decided against it.

Its only there to represent a lashwhip anyway, which does no damage, so not too fussed, but I would have loved to throw a buzzsaw or something else killy on the end..

Great work on the hive guard and the tervigon, they are looking really snazzy. I read the lexicanum article and it certainly does leave room for interpretation and yours looks great.

Also where did you get that hulk figure?

How big is it?

Ok, let me guess... a Carnifex?

Its 8 inches tall and will be mounted on the bottom half of a dreadknight using a lot of wires and electronic gismos with something hairy and teethy mounted where the hulk's head will have been...

£6 from ebay... I reckon thats almost a bargain

and no.. not a carnifex but it will be a Heavy Support choice

Woohoo a free weekend for modelling, about to go down to my FLGS to get me a dreadknight kit and get started on my Trygon:

Here is the top half, just sawed up the Hulk model and added some milliput in the joints, will make this neater with some greenstuff later and join to the dreadknight. One huge gun is needed, plus the claw from the Soul Grinder kit..

more pics later
