Subject: Death Korps of Krieg - now with Eldar and even Mexicrons!

Hello folks, happy new year!
Long time lurker, first time poster here with my brand new Death Korps of Krieg blog.
I was getting a bit tired of painting my Space Wolves army (3500+ points and counting) and searched for inspiration and motivation. I always liked the fluff and gameplay of the imperial guard, the detail and general look of the forgeworld Death Korps models just blew my mind.
To cut a long story short I ordered some test models to work out a paint scheme, made a temporary army list (Siege style with lotsa static template Boom Boom) and readied my painting equipment.
Here are the first two painted models of my upcoming army. I used two different browns of vallejo air for the basecoat and washed the coat two times with devlan mud. Last step was a light drybrush of one of the vallejo browns mixed with bleached bone. The trousers, boots and armour parts were basecoated with codex grey, washed two times with badab black (three times for the armour parts) and drybrushed with fortress grey. The red parts of the commissar's coat is terracotta with a light wash of devlan mud. Guns are boltgun metal, heavily washed with badab black.
Both dudes took me around two hours while I was still working out the paint scheme, so I should be able to speed up that process a little bit. Hopefully my other test models will arrive on monday, next in the queue are two death riders and a heavy stubber dude!
Comments and critics are really really welcome, I am a medicore painter and I bet you guys could help me to improve my skills a lot. Any suggestions on the general paint scheme are also welcome!

Good start of a great army, they have a good dark and foreboding look that is perfect for DKoK.
I too am starting a death korps army and am also beginning a blog on them today! Strange

Thanks for the comments, guys!
Quick Update: No Death Riders inside the mail box today but I had time to start repainting my ol' and ugly Leman Russ looted wagon from my Orks.
Still very WIP but the airbrush part is completely finished except weathering. There were some parts missing (tank tracks, left, right and upper hatch) and I need to figure out how to replace them properly.
The light blueish stripe will contain the regiment tank numbers, do you think a bright red might look better? I kinda like this light, pale look of the blue tho.

IMHO try red or a darker brown, which would be somewhat how tanks of that color in the military are actually marked and numbered.

Shame about the missing parts. For future reference GW are very good at replacing stuff. I'm not sure they'd do it if the kit has been built though... or was this an ebay purchase?

In reference to the missing parts you should look into getting the parts from some place like thewarstore or similar bits company so you can get all the necessary parts on sprue. It is not necessarily cheap by any means but it is much cheaper than buying a new Leman Russ kit.

@btemple0 and Flashman: The tank was an ebay purchase and since then it did its job as a looted wagon for my crappy orks.
There are some Leman Russ sprues on the bay that run out in some days - I might just buy one to replace the hatches. To my knowledge there are no really good bits-shops here in Germany (correct me if I'm wrong!).
Anyways here are the pics of the as good as finished Leman Russ.
Still no Death Riders in the mail box but I hope my Grenadier Squad and Tank Commander will arrive today!

@shingouki: Thanks for the critics! I have to think about darkening the tank, the problem will be that the weathering powder would also get darker which I wouldn't like at all. I already sprayed a darker gradient at the bottom on both the turret and hull.
Good news: Package of grenadiers and the tank commander arrived yesterday. Thanks to my wife I already had the time to basecoat them:
Bad News: There seems to be a problem with the Death Rider's mailing, could take a bit to arrive.

Great work It actually looks better than the test subjects, probably because the cloth looks less shiny. Maybe some soot marks around the vent on his pack?

@Commander Cain: i'd question the usability of the breathing unit if there would be soot marks around it .
Actually the darker cloths happened by accident as I used a slightly different mix of the highlight colour.
@btemple0: good idea, will try that!
I thought about painting the gun wires with a contrast colour like a dark green but kept it grey in the end. Good descision?

Try blackening the tip on the flamer so it looks like it has been used a bit, somewhat like the nozzle on http://www.dakkadakka.com/gallery/170652-2nd%20Marine%20Flamer%20.html ( not my work, but best example I could find at the time )

I would drill out the barrels of the Leman Russ bolters. I also think it would look good to go around the edges of your base with a paint so it doesn't look like its black with strips of area spray painted. Unless you are liking that worn look on the rims of the base then keep it.
Either way I love DKoK and if I played IG it would be the only way to do it for me.

Yup, good suggestion. I already did that with my melta gunner (first post).

I totally agree with you but I don't have any small drill to do it properly. Any advice what kind of drill is suitable for resin? Standard wood or something special?
I will paint the base edges but I'm not sure whether I should match it to my gaming board or just paint them black.

Automatically Appended Next Post: It's been a while since my last posting but this little sweety is keeping me from painting any models atm!
Good thing is that she doesn't keep me away from spending more money on small toy soldiers so my WIP queue got a little bit longer:
The vendettas are just put together and are ready for the primer. The general paint scheme will be comparable to the Russ but I'm thinking about giving the bottom a contrast colour. I don't know if it should be a grey or light blue - both should do well with the muddy brown.
The left Basilisk will receive a heavy weathering. I also need to get my hands on the big front shield or scatch build one with my non existent plasticard skills.
Mr. Russ is nearly finished but I found some nice bits to enhance his menacing appearance. The associated DKoK Tank Commissar needs to get some paint on him, after that I will finish the Russ's top hatch.
The Right Basilisk is just basecoated, the death riders are last in the queue because they are not content of my actual army list.
So there is more than enough to do the next weeks. I will try to post some more frequent updates in the future, thanks for all your comments and critics!

Finally some progress!
Here are some WIP shots of the first vendetta. The airbrush part is finished, I painted the engines and did my first try at some OSL on the cockpit.
I will glue the glass cockpit when the hole painting is done because I want to try to airbrush the washes instead of painting them.
I wasn't really sure what colour combination to use for the vendettas. The bleached bone parts seem to break the muted colour scheme somehow but I hope I can tone it down with some washes later on. Now comes the time-consuming painting, I will start with the weapons and will slowly work my way through this awesome model!
I still have no clue how to paint the sensor pod on the nose of the vendetta. Any clue what it "should" look like? Is it more a huge glass or kind of a radar "plastic" dish?!
PICTURES!

Wow, nice Death Korps! Didn't even notice your blog until now.
In your first post I thought they looked a little monotonous (the backpack and the rolled blanket have the same color?) but the grenadiers look really good!
Oh and nice to see another color scheme on the DK.
I have to say, I'm not a big fan of using the Codex IG with Chimeras and Valkyres on the Death Korps, but yeah well ... Are you sure you don't want to use the Siege Regiment Army List?

Siege Regiment list is horrible though.
I'm all for somebody playing IG and using cooler models in the place of the regular Cadian/Catachan etc. ones.

I just wanted to try out the basic scheme and didn't care much about the details. I will also completely repaint the commissar after I read that they wear all black coats. Like grayspark said a true DK regiment should be siege style but after some playtesting I just got teared apart against CC Orks and Chaos. The vendettas will be the only unit out of the actual IG codex, just to give me some flexibility and speed on the board. The rest are 3 basilisks, a russ and lots of troops!

Ich hab erst jetzt gesehen, dass Du auch aus Deutschland kommst.
I only now noticed you're from Germany, too.
I have to say, I only had few matches till now - and I have to admit that I lost or got a draw with the DK till now - but I think the Siege Regiment Army List is able to field a good army. I'm going for two Hades drills with 10 - 20 engineers each and 1, 2 or even 3 Death Rider squads with 10 each. It'll take a while until I have all models together, but I think that I can easily refrain from using the Codex IA this way.
The only problems I see are the elite-slots. Either I take a full squad of grenadiers or a half squad with a Centaur, because I want both Heavy Mortars and Thudd Guns. But I'll also try a list without artillery and fully equiped Grenadiers.
Keep in mind that the DK has +1 WS (KG in German). I'm eager to try a 30 man combined squad with laspistols (+1 attack), vox, commissar and quartermaster (feel no pain) and try to get the first attack against orcs in the next match. Should be messy.
I guess I just prefer the background of the Siege Regiment and thus like to play them this way - no matter what.
Oh, and I think your commissar looks rather good. I've seen very cool commissars in white / bright grey uniforms. I wouldn't change it.

Havent seen much about Death Korps of Krieg. They look really good tho. Your getting a really nice effect on those models.
If they brought out Tallarn in plastic I'd definately start an intense project on them, but the forgeworld models are just brilliant!
