Dudes,
So roughly 400 hours after starting this project I present to you the new and improved Super Huge Detailed Map of the Warhammer Old World... in color!
Download at http://www.GitzmansGallery.com - WFRP Maps section.
The map is a little over 16,000 pixles by 16,000 pixles. It is a continuous map from Norsca to Khemri, from Estalia to the Dark Lands.
Main Features:
- A boat load of detail
- The Island of Albion, Altdorf Region, part of Araby, Averland, The Badlands, Border Princes, Bretonnia, The Dark Lands, Kislev, Nuln, Estalia, Hochland, Middenland, Nordland, Norsca, Ostermark, Ostland, Reikland, Stirland, Suddenland, Sylvania, Talabecland, The Moot, The Pirate Isle of Sartosa, Tilea, Troll Country, The Wasteland, Wissenland, The Worlds Edge Mountains, and more.
- All locations, roads, cities, forests, etc. have been rescaled to be more cohesive.
- Full color throughout.
- Huge amounts of community feedback for correcting errors and adding new locations has been implemented.
- Many Orc, Goblin and Skaven settlements have been included
For those of you interested in printing the map, it is designed to be printed at 300 dpi, which should yeild a map between 4 and 4 1/2 feet squared.
While nearly 90% of this map was redrawn and created me, a very large portion of the original content and inspiration came from the community and the following: Andreas Blicher, Alfred Nunez, JackDays, Emerikol, Sunatet, and many, many more. My thanks to everyone who helped contribute content.
Its a large file, 100 mb PDF, and all that, so beware =). But its very cool.
Visit http://www.GitzmansGallery.com - WFRP Maps to download.

That sounds great! I'd love to see some printed pics and some feedback for how it turns out in physical form.
For printing, it is intended to be at 300 dpi, which would give you about 4.3 feet squared. If that is too large you can go a bit smaller but risk losing some details.
I'd suggest not printing it on hardboard or canvas as the hardboard will be too large to transport in any car. The canvas on the other hand may provide a little too much texture for the fine text to be legible. I'd stick to a nice matte laser print on heavy weight paper.
I dont know the costs for Kinkos printing specifically but they are quite expensive (i'd guess $150 or so). There are several places online who will do a poster print of it for aroudn $100 with next day delivery. Do a search for 'printing large color posters'.
Feedback, alterations or additions are welcome.
Game on!

The person at Kinkos said it would be 198 inches square! I told him I'd like it to be 4x4, so that's what I'm having printed. He said the printer is native 300 dpi, and I got to see it coming out and it looked pretty good. Not sure where that 198 came from, though! Also, the map is so detailed that even at 4 feet, I can't quite read some of the smallest labels... they're tiny! You've done an awesome job on this thing!

Ah, another thing I wasn't sure about, knowing nothing about printing. I'm also having it laminated, and got to compare the gloss to the matte... gloss seemed to make the colors much more vibrant, so I ended up going with that.
I'm having it done on regular paper, but I picked up two 2'x4' sections to put behind/under it to support it. A single 4'x4' wouldn't fit in my car (I've tried it before... not pretty!)

It was around $100, unfortunately the lamination process adds a bit to that! So this thing is costing a small fortune... but worth it for DakkaCon!
Will post up pics of it in action for the mini-campaign on Saturday

Very cool! I'm glad to hear your thoughts from Kinkos and your experience there. That will be the most likely print spot for people.
My preference is usually towards matte printing vs glossy mostly due to glare. It also tends to make the colors look a little more muted in a manner that appears more like an older map. However i you wanetd to have the colors pop a bit more, the glossy will certainly get you that effect. It seem sto be a preference thing at that point. The lamenation will add a bit of glare too, but its critical if you are going to drop $150 on printing a map this large.
If i recall correctly the smalled point fonts used are at 18pt, which should still eb pretty visible even if scaled down 10 or 15% to get to 4 feet. Hopefully it still works great for you.
Regarding a Scale:
I have added a digital scale and ruler to the GoogleMaps version on http://www.gitzmansgallery.com. It allows you to measure distances, plot a journey and measure travel times. Check it out, very cool.

Awesome . I just picked it up from Kinkos and it looks fantastic, not risking unrolling it all the way until I get it where I need to go, though!
Most of the tiny labels are readable if you squint hard enough so pretty great!!

I'm thrilled you guys are enjoying it.
If you do decide to print, make sure you print at 300dpi. It should be quite clear at that resolution and Kinko's employees will not explode. I heard some other dudes on another forum try to print and the employee was trying to print it ad 72dpi and 150dpi, which yielded a HUGE poster which they could not print.
Feedback and error corrections welcome if you notice any. I've already corrected a few typos and am updating Sylvania and Kislev as we speak.

I forgot to post this here, but here's a pic of this map in use at DakkaCon!
The next step is to add a metal sheet behind it, so we can put it up on the wall and use magnetic tokens on it. I left it up with Mike at Showcase Comics, so hopefully they can do this and it'll be even better for the next Dakka get-together

When printed at 300 dpi, 100% scale, (essentially a 4.5x4.5 foot map) the smallest text is 14 point bold, so it should remain quite legible. In all my test printing it remains quite clear.
Though the smallest text i just mentioned are really minute details and are nto meant to be read from a distance. Larger landmarks and cities such as capitals are much more legible at a distance. So naturally as you get closer you can read more locations.
Check out the GoogleMaps version if you want to test it out ahead of time: http://www.gitzmansgallery.com/Warhammer_Maps/index.html

Cost for the one above, ballpark, was $115 for the map, and $50 for the lamination. With taxes it came out to right around $175... so a small fortune! But so worth it for DakkaCon, and we'll be using it for other events in the future, too.
The smallest of the really minute labels were a bit hard to read. Like I said, the Kinko's guy told me that the map would print out to 198 inches by 198 inches! I mentioned several times that "It really should come out to around 4 feet x 4 feet at 300 DPI" but he said that was at 300 DPI. So basically, I don't know what I'm doing .
I told him I'd like it 4 foot square, so that's what the above is. I imagine that at 4.5 foot square those tiny names would be more legible, as every little bit at this size is making a large difference in overall area.
It is incredibly awesome, however it is done!

You know, i'd love to. But we'll have to see how things go. There just arent as many detailed maps of areas outside the empire. Doesnt mean i dont want to, just not sure it there is a justification for it.
Realistically if i were to do it, i'd probably keep expanding off the edges of the map i've got going. probably finish off Norsca and hit the chaos wastes up north. Push into the Darklands on the right. Include Ultuan on the left. And build out Khemri and northern Araby on the bottom. Sounds super cool, but in reality, that would make the map roughly 9 times larger than it is now. That hurts my head. =)
And my poor computer, that would be a 45+ Gig uncompressed PSB file. I just dont know if it can handle it =) I'd have to start tiling the content.
Gitz
P.S. A v1.1 of the map is on the way over the next week or so with some upgrades to Sylvania and Kislev. (also includes a few typo corrections and a few places that were accidently made dwarf holds which are not)
