Its not constitutional (for real this time). in order to reinforce the greatness of the US constitution, it needs to form up the IronHorse Division and have it drive in random directions over everything in the state. All the tanks should have bumper stickers that say "Sherman was here," "Sheridan knocked up your honor student," and "We kicked your ass at Gettysberg and all I got was this lousy T shirt."

Run the debt up, ruin the currency. Locals revert to gold as a better retention of value than worthless notes, that sort of thing.

Agreed. I laughed when I heard Obamas plan to "fix" the problem, by throwing money Joker style at it. My first thought was "wait a second.....you want to throw MORE money at a growing debt....created by losing a metric crap ton of......money?"
Sometimes I think I should goto college and have economics as a class. Then maybe itll make more sense to me

Well the thing is that there is No quick solution to debt. It took 30 plus years to dig the hole. Add in out sourcing, and bad management and there you have it. Obama thinks, and I believe that we're going to have to spend money to make our kids smarter, and Our infastructure better. Look at it this way. A family is Dirt poor. They first thing to do is make sure you keep your house, keep the lights on and keep the kids fed. THEN you worry about the credit card bills. We could cut every and still end up in debt, because everything has been outsourced or automated, and the way we do business is broken, and our infrastructure sucks. Two panert house holds can't make enough to survive, Housing, food, and energy have skyrocketed even though there isn't a real shortage of any of them. You can't fix this issue with politics. We have to take a true look at how we do business.

Actually throwing money at the economy might very well fix the debt through renewed income. But noone wants to admit that the deficit needs to be solved through more income, they just want to talk about cuts.

Its funny, because the value of gold was originally based upon how worthless(okay, maybe not worthless, but useless) it was. The only thing you could do with it was turn it into jewelery/let it sit there, and yet it is so valuable... Granted, nowadays we have legitimate uses for them (like semiconductors) but in the event of a societal collapse, who is better off/wealthier/more powerful? The guy with a ton of gold, or the guy with 10 assault rifles and 50,000 rounds? Also acceptable is the guy with enough food/water to last 10 years when properly rationed.

Sounds like the plan is basically put our kids in more debt, hand them the keys, and tell them "we paid for your education so that you could figure this out, now figure this out". Not the way to go about it IMO. We don't have to cut tons of programs and start running a massive surplus budget, but we can't continue running on a deficit. The country is rapidly heading towards a situation similar to that of the former U.S.S.R. Its only a matter of time before the 'rust belt' literally starts rusting.

The Dread Evil Lord Varlak
|
Here's the thing, the GFC saw a massive retraction in funds available for investment, and that in turn led to a whole lot less investment. The result of this is that there really was a whole lot less money out their in the system. That right there threatens to produce deflation and while that sounds great (the dollar I earned last year can buy more stuff this year?!) it's pretty dreadful for the economy as a whole because it discourages spending and investment - particularly disastrous when you really need to increase aggregate demand to create more jobs.
The most direct way to address deflationary concerns is to print more money. However, if you get this wrong, and deflation wasn't as big a threat, you can end up flooding the economy with cash and causing high levels of inflation. There was a big debate on whether the US was going to face deflation in the year or two after the GFC, and Obama sided with the mob that said there would be, and the sensible solution was to print money.
They were absolutely, 100% right, inflation has remained very low despite the printing of new money. In fact, it was in negative for much of 2009 and right now is still in tracking at less than 2%.
Meanwhile, the other issue is the US government deficit. The US has, as everyone knows, maintained unsustainable deficits for a few decades now. The only meaningful solution is to come to a broad agreement on the general level of government spending needed, and then set the tax rate to suit. Because people like pretending the issue is insurmountably difficult to solve and doom is imminent, when 'tax rates in line with the rest of the world and a cut to defence spending' would solve about 90% of the problem.
|
“We may observe that the government in a civilized country is much more expensive than in a barbarous one; and when we say that one government is more expensive than another, it is the same as if we said that that one country is farther advanced in improvement than another. To say that the government is expensive and the people not oppressed is to say that the people are rich.”
Adam Smith, who must have been some kind of leftie or something. |

Cut social programs, raise tax rates on households w/ incomes over 1 million per year, cut taxes for households w/ incomes less than 250k per year. The obscenely wealthy will survive just fine, they might not be able to afford the new 300 ft. yacht, private island and new gulfstream, but last years models will serve them just as well... As someone who has identified as a 'repug' until recently, I challenge them to try to slit my throat...

Well they ARE preaching sustainability in current business classes. The problem is sustainability is not popular amongst actual companies compared to short term profit.

Depends. I think a lot of social services could be cut/consolidated and reworked to be more reasonable, less abusable and less costly. I am against giving out a free check to people. I'm not against lending them a helping hand when they are down and pointing them in the right direction.

That depends on how you define those two situations. What about someone who has been unemployed for over a year, is constantly trying to find a job and puts out a lot of applications, but doesn't get hired no mtater how hard they try? This is hardly a rare situation these days.

That doesn't need to be the case. It is entirely possible to expand without operating under a continuous deficit. In any case, such a large debt will eventually become a hindrance to economic expansion, in fact it will become a driving force for recession
