Well, I need a new game to play, and because I demand the best of the best.
I was wondering if anybody out thier knows some awesome stealth games.
Currently I have all 3 Thief games, and Hitman Bloodmoney and other games that have stealth elements like
Vampire the Masqurade: Bloodlines and Morrowind.
Reasons why these games are awesome will be cherished

I think Thief is at the top of the heap, and if we're talking Eidos then perhaps Deus Ex? Also try System Shock, though considering who your avatar is you probably have. Finally there's all them Splinter Cell games.

Splinter Cell was developed by Ubisoft Montreal.
Rainbow six(the old stuff on the PC) had some stealth elements in it. It was a 'got hit once and you died' game.
Sniper Elite has a stealth system and in some missions you have to remain stealthy or else.

I was going to mention Rainbow Six, but it's not full blown stealth. Is tactcial squad based operations an accurate description?

You should be banging your head over forgetting Deus Ex. I am still wondering when the heck that thing is coming out. It was January, then April, now I think it is August?!
Also the Splinter Cell Games are pretty good. I really liked the first two. The newest one doesn't seem too bad. I got to play it for a few hours and enjoyed it.

Metal Gear Solid series. Described as 'Tactical Espionage Action' it combines sneaking past large numbers of guards with awesome set pieces and memorable bosses. The sniper duel in MGS3 is a stand-out moment for me.

Yes, but there are one or two missions where its stealth only. No killing and you have to plant bugs on a phone and some paintings. Stealth is also a big part in the hostage missions, if you make too much noise they kill the hostages. Maybe its a 'tactical stealth squad based' game.

That sounds about right for Rainbow 6. I think Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter is similar in that respect. Also I second Metal Gear Solid, forgot about that series. I think 3 has the best mechanics but I'm sure 4 is better, but I have never played it.

I also forgot about the Metal Gear Series, but I wouldn't say 4 is better than 3. In 4 you get incentives for killing people and I found myself playing it more like resident evil than metal gear solid.
Of course you could play it stealthily, but I found it difficult to want to do so.

Don't forget about all of the stealth you needed in Batman: Arkham Asylum. Also, the Ghost in the Shell game had some areas where stealth was needed too (Damn snipers)

Batman's a good game, but once you beat the final boss there's nobody to hide from or beat up. The ride is still a good one though and its no longer $60.

I could recommend operation flashpoint dragon rising. Not really a stealth game but a lot of the missions require some degree of stealth and as a 'one shot and your probably dead' game you'll often want to avoid combat as much as possible.
Have to say it has one of the most satisfying missions (IMO) ever where you stalk an enemy general for what is quite some time killing only one or two sentries, then calling down a JADM on a radio base killing the general and knocking out the radio base (as long as game doesn't glitch causing you to have to go in their guns blazing, grrrrr...) then either fighting your way to the extraction point or sneaking your way there.

Isn't that how most games work? Sure some of them allow a free roam and still kill badguys, but batman's game is designed to let you find the secrets you may have missed before the final boss.

Not really, even after you beat Red Faction Guerrilla or any free roaming games there will always be some kind of resistance to your actions. After beating the final boss in Arkham Asylum there's nobody to fight and then the stealth game becomes an easter egg hunt. There's no multiplayer in it and I truly felt that even though it was a great story experience, it wasn't worth the sixty dollars I spent on it. Probably worth twenty or thirty though.
The alien and predator campaigns for Alien vs Predator were pretty good stealth wise. Not worth $60, but definitely worth the $20 or so you should be able to find it for.
Anybody have anything to say for Assassin's Creed Brotherhood?

Old school Tenchu! If you do not have a playstation, there is a version on the Wii. Not the best renditions of the game though. The Batman Arkham Asylum is stealthy as well, I am waiting as patiently as possible for Batman Gotham City!
Other games have been covered already that may be better suited to you. I just had to say Tenchu though as it was a really fun game.

Every time I hear "in my opinion" or "just my opinion" makes me want to strangle a puppy. People use their opinions as a shield that other poeple can't critisize and that is bs.
If you can't defend or won't defend your opinion then that "opinion" is bs. Stop trying to tip-toe and defend what you believe in. |

I don't remember Syphon Filter having a major stealth element to it. There was some stealth involved, but I can only remember it being so you got the drop on the enemies rather than getting picked off by a sniper on a roof, and then massive firefights all round. Mind you, it's been a while, so I could have just been too young to appreciate the stealth aspect.
Assassin's Creed and Metal Gear Solid would be the two stand-out stealth series I've played apart from Thief.

halonachos wrote:Anybody have anything to say for Assassin's Creed Brotherhood?
In my opinion, one of the best games ever. In Brotherhood, you've always got two options, go in loud or sneak in. Mostly at the beginning of the game when you don't have all that fany equipment, you'll go sneaky. Some missions require you to go completely undetected, others are only 50% complete if you get detected.
I really think Brotherhood is a great stealth game, and offers really a lot of hours of gameplay. My only advice is to complete as many, if not all of the sidequests before you finish the main story. Otherwise, it gets quite (as in really) boring if you finish the storyline first.
But then comes online gaming! There are three modes: every man for himself, alliance (teams of two, three teams) and manhunt (two teams). In each case, your aim is to kill your opponent. You have abilities which you unlock (smoke bombs) which customize to maximise for a certain playstyle.
Online, you really do need stealth, whether it is to get away from your assassing or to kill someone. The stealthier you are, the more points you get.
I'd say Brotherhood is definately a game to buy if you're into stealthy stuff. If you don't have HD, get it for this game, it is really worth it.

It's a pretty brutal stealth/action game, you'll find out why, since the guards, for the most part, just drop their rifles when they die just to troll you... one last time.
Warning: It got its "M" rating for a reason, do not play if you are offended easily.

It is an unforgettable game, the atmosphere is just fantastic. The only problem being it's a bit too short.
However, I have not played Dark Athena, only the demo, still great, but I have knowledge that Butcher Bay comes included, with updated graphics to boot.

As an outside mentoin I would also like to point out that Metro 2033 has some awsome stealth game play mechanics if you choose to play it that way. On top of that the hit box mechanics are amazing on the NPCs and what you can shoot off/at to kill them, damage them, disable them, etc. The human NPCs have traps layed out too, so you have to watch for those otherwise you may set off bombs, bells, pit falls, etc. The level layouts in a bunch of the underground stages have some really well thought out design for sneaking, distracting and dismantling the NPC defences. There are a ton of secrect ways to get from A to B in the stealthy sections allowing you to avoid patrols, traps, and enemies. I highly recommend this game if you want some cool stealth gameplay as well as some awsome monster/post apocolyptic game play.
Also, if you do get this game watch for the guy that sells armour. He doesn't have a bench with it layedout like the other dealers. Its basically two equipment sets sitting on either side of him against the wall. One of the sets is a stealth armour suit, basically lighter and more silent armour and some night vision, which will help if you are attempting stealth operations. I missed that guy on my first play through.

Good old Betheseda usually work a stealth element into their games. The Elder Scrolls : Oblivion (and it's prequel, Morrowind) can be played as a stealthy character, as can Fallout 3.
