This is for the Ork players out there

Instead of paying for a posh model or even a cheaper one off a website, why not make ur own? I mean, all you have to do, is find a toy car that is a good scale for warhammer 40k and ork it up a bit (Meaning, put some Orky symbols on it, paint it red (Cause we all know, red things go 'fasta), put an ork hanigng out the window screaming or w/e, put some big shootas/rokkit lauchas around the side, or even a great big cannon. AND BAM, you got ur self a Looted Wagon, Trukk, or even a Battle wagon.

Ur mind can almost go anywhere with orks

This is the downside of that mentality. Believe me, I have 3 different scratchbuilds on my workbench right now and if I had the cash, I'd be placing an order with the Toy Soldier Depot for conversion fodder, so I have NO issue with taking the DIY approach. The thing is, lots of folks seem to forget that there's a method to the madness of the orky aesthetic. "Rickety stuff bunged together from scrap" doesn't give you carte blanche to literally glob glue onto garbage and roll it into a ball (usually called "trukk" or "battlewagon"). At least, not if you want it to look even remotely good.

Lord Blackfang isn't wrong (his comment was a slight exaggeration, but by no means an uninformed opinion) - there are plenty of fantastic scratchbuilds and conversions out there. There are great paintjobs, too. That doesn't mean that those cases are the norm, or even very common. We're spoiled, especially on places like Dakka, by seeing so much great work that the "average" level of work is skewed significantly. Familiar with the availability heuristic? Cognitive biases are fun little tidbits to look up, if you aren't.

The last thing I would make is a call for more scratchbuilds, as much as I personally love them. Instead, I'd call for a bit more effort from the shallow end of the pool.

Indeed. When people say that Ork tech is made from garbage, they usually forget to mention that it's supposed to look like 28mm scale garbage, not real-life refuse.

A couple of months ago I was flipping through one of my wife's catalogues...not sure which one.

They had these "Die cast scale models" of old Ford cars and trucks! Like Model T's and such! They were a good fit scale-wise, and with some Orky Glyphs and paint and of course some more solid wheels or tracks, and an Ork or two hanging out the windows they would make great war buggies or even trukks if you made the beds bigger! I wish I had ordered some when I had the chance, but maybe I'll see some at yard sales!

The point of my rambling is that while not EVERY toy car or truck can look good when made into an Ork vehicle, some can, and look great! I almost always take a detour through the toy isle when I go to a supermarket, just in case!

While a cool model, it ISN'T an example fo what the Op was talking about. That isnt a toy car and it has so many GW bits on it that it probably cost more than a BW, so it isn't saving money either...

Also to the OP: post some pics of the ork vehicles you have made using the method you suggest. Talk is cheap...

Thanks! They also have two more from the same line that are smaller. they would make perfect ork fightas and the large ones for Fightabommas. I also found some cheap bombs that are about 4.5 inches long at the same store! They were $5.00 for four of them.

They look something like this:

If you look through the toy section of any store, you will see that toy bombs and missiles are almost nonexistent.

Also some comparison pics to a fighta:

I absolutely love scratch built ork stuff. I also love the kitbashed and heavily modified models Ork players bring to the table, but is /hardly/ a cheaper alternative if you consider the amount of time it takes to get an equivalent quality result.

If you go to GW and buy a set of the new Killa Kans, you can assemble those and have em ready to paint in just a few hours.

If you scratch build, you'll spend a few hours on arms alone. I built myself a set of 6 killa kans a while ago, and while I'm very happy with the results, it took me hours and hours and hours. I'd estimate 1.5h per arm, and maybe 3 hours per body for each model. So, 5h per model. So, 15 hours of work for a set of three, as opposed to perhaps 2h assembly with the GW models.

Thanks for bringing this thread back to the first page BloaterPaste, I had completely forgot about it. I just about have two toy tanks finished to go with my skullhamma. I think you all will like them. I should be finishing up my Fischer Price planes this weekend as well.

Lord Scythican, while I don't doubt your ability to turn those toys into cool bommas, I think it'll take you just as much work as building them from scratch.

Let me take some pics of my tanks before you settle on that opinion.

Two of these were toy tanks I bought for $1.00 at a yard sale. The other one was a $100.00 baneblade.

I think I've posted them here before, but maybe not since they were painted. Oops, and I don't have any paint pix with the arms (maybe the coolest parts) on (they're magnetized), but here you go:

Excellent!

Now for my opinion : Any orky player worth his salt should convert or kitbash together his vehicles, etc at least a little. The few examples we have in this very thread are examples of mekaniak enjinooity at it's best! That being said, I think it is very hard to mimic the GW look without great skill and careful consideration and most based-on-a-toy-car models look trashy.

In short: Never cut corners to save cash

Great ork minds do think alike! You need to start converting then! Have you seen the others? There is two small ones that would make nice fightas and they just released a new one last week that looks like a seaplane.

These conversions from toys looks great! And prove my point, that some toys can make great Ork vehicles. It may start out as a way to save money, and we can probably agree not much real money is saved if you consider your time is money, but when you finish a really great conversion, it may look similar in function to a GW version, but it is unique! I have seen alot of great looking Ork armies on this site and others, and they all look the same. Maybe different paint, but always the same options on the same models. Why not go back to 2nd Ed, and all the metal models? We live in an era of plastic and Green Stuff and Imagination! I say let's get out there and grab random stuff, some superglue and let our imaginations run wild!!! Well, not too wild...there are some Ork vehicles out there that still look like you could find the Fisher Price logo on them. [end rant] So, in conclusion, great job all! I hope to see some more imaginative, unique and best of all "Not GW" Ork Vehicles in the future!

Is it bad that I don't mess with the logos? If you look underneath mine, it still says what kind of toy they were. It is sort of an easter egg for me and I like knowing what the toy used to be. You never know, 10 years from now I may want to find another one.

@Solorg: I am getting serious Carny Vibes from your conversions...you need to raid a few of those quarter machines and get some little teddy bears to hang up on the sides of those things.
