I love 40k enough, but Battlefleet Gothic is the closest any of the 40k games has come to actually representing the factions as their fluff represents them. It is also very elegant in its mechanics.

"'players must agree how they are going to select their armies, and if any restrictions apply to the number and type of models they can use."

This is an actual rule in the actual rulebook. Quit whining about how you can imagine someone's army touching you in a bad place and play by the actual rules.

Fantasy. More tactics, less space marines.

Thus, After having thus successively taken each member of the community in its powerful grasp and fashioned him at will, the supreme power then extends its arm over the whole community. It covers the surface of society with a network of small complicated rules, minute and uniform, through which the most original minds and the most energetic characters cannot penetrate, to rise above the crowd. The will of man is not shattered, but softened, bent, and guided; men are seldom forced by it to act, but they are constantly restrained from acting. Such a power does not destroy, but it prevents existence; it does not tyrannize, but it compresses, enervates, extinguishes, and stupefies a people, till each nation is reduced to nothing better than a flock of timid and industrious animals, of which the government is the shepherd

Bloodbowl!

Easy cost of entry, can be played reasonably fast, easy to pickup hard to master.

And it is one of the better balanced games with the core teams and due to the LRB model and testing and design of the community over the years.

Im ok with 40k,but i REALLY like how heavy gear blitz machanics work. plus you never have as many units as 40k,and their about the same price,so you save precious cash.

My favourite game is probably Star Wars Minis, but I only have one mate who plays that. I have several mates that also play 40K and that is quickly becoming my favourite.

I do like lots of games though such as D&D Minis, Heroscape, Carcassonne, Settlers of Catan, Formula Motor Racing & RPGs. My favourite all time game is still Star Wars D6 RPG.

Apologies for talking positively about games I enjoy.

For Sci-FI 40k would have been my second choice, as it's the game I've played the longest, and I love the fluff and minaitures. However, recently I've started playing Warengine which is the game engine that was used for Shockforce.

The rules are simpler, but more tactical (actually has reserved-attack/overwatch mechanic) and being able to quickly stat up any figure is really great for someone who likes various other miniature lines as much as GW.

For fantasy, it's Song of Blades and Heroes. I'm not interested in Fantasy mass battles, but the fast play skirmish (60 minute games) of SoBH is awesome. Also, like Warengine, it's easy to stat up charachters yourself.

My favorite game is Necromunda, as in, if I got to pick, I would play Necromunda probably 75% of my tabletop time.

I enjoy the small unit tactics, the wonky weapon rolls, the adapting on the fly, the great variation in scenarios, and the lack of armor saves. I also very much enjoy campaign play and watching your gang evolve from mission to mission.

Following, I enjoy 40k next most. 40k right now is probably 60-80% of my actual tabletop time, because my gaming group prefers it over Necromunda.

Then Mordheim. I know Necro and Mordheim are similar, but the mordheim fluff leaves something to be desired.

Then FB, which I just don't enjoy as much.

Two Hour Wargames has one called "All things Zombie" and is supported with a few expansions/senario books. It's based on their Reaction system which is quite popular. The company owner/author is quite active on his yahoo group.

There's actually quite a few, but that's the first one that springs to mind. Google Zombie Wargame and you'll get a few.

BloodBowl is Fantasy, playing a cross between soccer and football. At least that's what it was, not sure what the current condition of the game is like. My first table top gaming was BloodBowl and BattleTech. IMO the best games ever made. Balance wise and fun wise.

I like both Warhammer 40k and Flames of War about equally.

I like Warhammer 40k more on the modeling and painting side, as I can put a lot more detail into a 28mm figure than a 15mmm one. I also like the fact that I can make up my own fluff for my army and have the freedom to paint them however I want.

I like the rules of FoW better than 40k, I haven't played it much yet, but I think I like the game play a little better too.

Battletech.

It was my gateway-game and the whole reason 19 years later that I am still playing with miniatures. Even though the system is clunky in places I still get a wicked thrill breaking 'Mechs so likely it will always be at the top of my gaming list.

Infinity is my favourite, in second place would be MERCS, and in third I'd say WH40K, but only cause I can get a game real easy!!

The reason I like Infinity, (and the same reasoning works for MERCS as well) I like the rules, but the background is vibrant and alive, in contrast to 40K which seems kind of musty and lifeless....perhaps even stagnant....I like the fact that in both Infinity and MERCS, there is hope, and progress, and technology is something to be actively advanced and sought after, rather then being something mystical.

The miniatures for both Infinity and MERCS are sublime, and really show what can be done if the company cares, and in both cases the companies have shown that they care about their customer base....unlike some others...

Man down, Man down....
