I personally thing that the word "Con with another o" should be uncensored. I have never seen it used besides for people's cats, and I thing the new prevailing term is more likely to get [Forum Posting Rules]'d.
Thanks, Chowderhead.

Because if I try to spell Maine [ see forum posting rules], I get shafted by the swear filter.

The question is: How often are you really going to be using that term here on Dakka? And the answer (should be): not that much if you're staying on topic. So if you HAVE to use that word in the context you're talking about, then spell it using zeros instead of Os.
Because just cruise youtube comments sometime...the word is definitely still used and it is a really nasty bit of hate to spew, so I think we'd rather play it safe considering how little it gets used otherwise.

I'd cite Brushfire as a reason to need to speak about that breed of cat, but the faction that contains them isn't in the current book.
But even then, it would be pretty rare to need to mention the character's breed of cat.

It's been in widespread (well, amongst bogans, mostly) use as an insult throughout Oz for decades. And, of course, there was the infamous lawsuit against the cheese company for being racially insensitive...

But the creator's name was that word its not like they named it after a minority or race?
Thats a little silly they tried to sue the company for the name after its creator.

well that word is a derogative term for blacks that you still can find in some areas of the U.S. that being said it probably could go uncensored since its dependent on usage, kind of like making bigotted statements about food choices.

Its other usage comes from the south(U.S.)its used as a derogative term for blacks, but, I think as long as mods do what mods do it wouldn't get used in that way much on here.

Thats a little silly they tried to sue the company for the name after its creator.
The story behind the lawsuit was that there was no evidence that anyone of that name actually created the cheese, and that the name was actually to do with the black wrapper that the cheese was originally marketed in. The name trademark allegedly came from a factory hand, some time after the cheese had already been on the market.
From memory, it didn't get anywhere, since there was no solid evidence one way or the other.

Yep seriously. This is the first time I've heard of that lawsuit, though after reading this thread I can kind of see why.

The filter is there to stop people using words inappropriately.
Yak's method for skipping the filter is for use in those rare situations where you would have an appropriate use for the word. Skipping around the filter deliberately to use a filtered word inappropriately is going to land you a holiday from the forums.

For that matter, would it be possible to get a feature (maybe a DCM one) that completely disables the profanity filter? I might be alone in this, and I'm not trying to start up a big row over censorship, but I've always been a fan of the "I'm a big boy, you needed protect me from what some consider 'bad' words" camp.

What?
The point was that it is censored because it's a word that is more likely to be used in an inappropriate fashion. Yak's point about getting around the filter was for those rare occasions where you need to use the word in one of its applications that isn't a racist slur.
The mods are not language police. We're not going to waste our time trolling through every thread looking for inappropriate language to correct... that's what the language filter is for. And if we have to fix posts because you have deliberately circumvented the language filter in order to use an offensive word in an offensive fashion, you're likely to find yourself on a posting holiday.
