Hey guys. Just curious about what other people's experiences were like in their first actual game. Was it against a friend at your house? Was it at a store? How was it? Did you have fun, make a ton of noobie mistakes, not know what the hell you were doing? Regail us with the tales of how you lost your 40K cherry.

I'll tell you a secret, something they don't teach you in your temples. The gods envy us. They envy us because we are mortal, because every moment may be our last. Everything is more beautiful because we are doomed. You will never be lovlier than you are now and we will never be here again.

My first game ever was in 2nd edition; I must have been 8 or 9. I had a unit of Blood Angels assault Terminators and I charged a predator. All I really remember is that the Terminators had those rad green to white blends painted on their lightning claws, and I've loved that style ever since. I played 40k a few more times over the next 6-7 years before picking it up in highschool.

My first game was at my mates house, using his Marines against him and his Tau. It wasn't a proper game, becasue I have a feeling I had a larger army, but that was my first game of 40K. I really enjoyed it, and won, and decided to collect marines.

Blimey that takes me back i think i was about 12 i'd been introduced by a mate and had bought a few eldar, 5 scorps, 5 hawks a warlock, and a war walker against a few two piece marines on the dining room table, books for hills under a table cloth. Can't remember who won. lots of mistakes we rolled to hit then make a saving throw, then roll to wound because obviously the bullets had to get through the armour to hurt the person inside.

My first game might have been the worst game to ever have been put together in 40k history, hehe. I was 12 I believe and both my friend and I were collecting Eldar and this was back when the Craftworld Eldar books were still valid. I was collecting Alaitoc and I had two squads of 5 pathfinders with a squad of guardians and dire avengers, and that's about it. I remember thinking "well there's no HQ or phoenix lord that's a sniper so why should I use one." Meanwhile my friend was doing Biel Tan and he had at least 1 squad of each aspect warrior, a wraith lord, warwalker, a wave serpent and a fire prism. We clearly weren't playing at a points value here which is probably why I got annihilated. I just remember his banshees being in assault with my guys by turn 2 because I don't think we really knew vehicle movement rules either and thinking "what hope does alaitoc have in this game >.<" It was a real massacre...

I'd played Fantasy (Dark Elves) on and off for a decade. When the Daemons of Chaos book came out in 2008 and curbstomped everything else, I got pretty fed up with the game for the last time and sold my army. Around that time, few of my friends who'd played Fantasy picked up 40k (AoBR), and I figured I'd give it a shot.

My first game pitted me, playing as my friend's Gray Marines, against the deadly forces of Waaagh Primeredblack, on the stark wasteland of Beerpongtablopolis. It was fun, and I picked up some Imperial Guard soon thereafter.

Don't really remember my first but everyone I've played against for their first game introducing them to the hobby totally stomp me. Which does help in getting them hooked as well.

Thus, After having thus successively taken each member of the community in its powerful grasp and fashioned him at will, the supreme power then extends its arm over the whole community. It covers the surface of society with a network of small complicated rules, minute and uniform, through which the most original minds and the most energetic characters cannot penetrate, to rise above the crowd. The will of man is not shattered, but softened, bent, and guided; men are seldom forced by it to act, but they are constantly restrained from acting. Such a power does not destroy, but it prevents existence; it does not tyrannize, but it compresses, enervates, extinguishes, and stupefies a people, till each nation is reduced to nothing better than a flock of timid and industrious animals, of which the government is the shepherd

Oh AoBR. I played the space marines, my brother played the orks. I think I won, but not by a large margin. No egregious mistakes that I can remember, but I'm sure we made them.

For reference, was against a GW guy, and was early-mid 4th edition.

dead account

My first game was against Tau. I was playing Ultramarines. It was 1200 pts I believe. We were playing 4th edition. Lots of my stuff died. When my HQ was killed I thought the game was over. The game was part of a campaign and was played in my FLGS.

Somewhere.

Not including the demo game where I played a Squad of marines against 20 guardsmen? Me vs some poor kid. We were both playings Orcs and Goblins, but I knew loosely what I was doing, having damn near memorized the rulebook and codex over the months as I painted up my army. He tried to bring a Wyvern in a 1000 points.

Anyway, turns out that Night Goblin Fanatics splat Orc Boys and Wolf Riders with equal contempt. It was the only offensive move I did before he got sad and left. I felt kinda bad...but not very.

My fist informal game was my IG vs my friends space marines. We had no idea of points values so he had significantly more than I did. (To the order of terminators, calgar and his honor guard and tactical squads, scouts and a pred vs my one platoon, storm troopers, some heavy weapons and a russ). Well I shot him up for a while then he assaulted and killed me.

My first real game was 1500pts guard vs tau. My opponent tailored his list like no tomorrow and beat me badly.

We're watching you... scum.

My first fight was my Tau against my friend's CSM at my apartment....it was a 1000 (or 1200) point game that lasted about 3.5 hours since it was the first time for both of us and we had to keep looking up rules. I remember he had two Chaos Dreadnaughts and one flipped out and kill the other on the first turn. I also discovered how hard Terminators were to kill...and that Firewarriors live up to their reputation in close combat

And if you're drinkin' well, you know that you're my friend and I say "I think I'll have myself a beer"

Orks (me) vs normal Space Marines. It was a really small game, only 500 points or so. I won, but at the end I only had 1 model left.

Driven away from WH40K by rules bloat and the expense of keeping up, now interested in smaller model count games and anything with nifty mechanics.

My first game was about 8 years ago, I had 20 cadian shock troops a lascannon team and a chimera against 2000pts of space marines... I lasted for 4 turns which I found quite impressive

Let's see ... 1995 ... we both kind of just made 500 point lists. I don't think any of out lists were legal but we we're more just learning the rules then. I lost, badly.

My first game was in GW, it was a big mega battle and I was in control of some store owned nids, I was the ranged guys. Perched my self ontop of the base that was being stormed by some marines, my shity little group of twelve took down a unit of 4 terminaters ( Everyone at the rabble got quite when the man rolled ones, and I rolled six's ) after that, took down another marine, then they moved up a thunder canon, shot eleven of my tarmaguants? Anyway, held the objective with a single one, and got to boast about how I shot a bunch of terminators with gak nids.

My first game was playing Rouge Trader in a GW store, I think I played Marines but the first game I clearly remember was using my small Zoat force.

I stopped playing during 2nd edition and have my first game of 5th edition next month in a tournament!

3 way battle for me.

Space Marines (Iron Knights) vs Space Marines (Imperial Fists) vs Necrons.
While the marines were fighting each other my dreadnought managed to defeat the Necron force by itself. Did it by assaulting one unit of warriors and consolidating into combat after combat against the Necrons until they were all gone.

Basically we learnt nothing from the game and spent most of it reading the rulebook.

Mine was 200ish points. I had three IG squads and my opponent used some SoB.
We played on a 4 by 4 table and my opponent footslogged towards me, and strangely enough, I won.
We went through the basics of the game a lot, moving, shooting and assaulting, a lot of the different rules were ignored.

My first game was when I was about 11, 4th ed had come out, but I had picked up a 3rd ed book cheap, so we were using that for the time being. I was defending some place against two of my friends, and we rolled for both cover and armour and invul, not just one of them, reasoning that it woudl go through cover, then then hit the armour too.
