I'm probably going to go see it. The gak that's been on-screens lately? I haven't seen a decent movie (or...well...any movies) in months. This one I KNOW will be good.

For those of us not on Facebook, can someone confirm is this a remake (a la Planet of the Apes), an updated version (a la Star Wars 4-6), or a re-release of the original cut?

Thanks
Re-release of the original cut is what I've seen in a couple of articles. I have not seen an official date, though. Only "around halloween".

It looks like a rerelease, possibly to set up the 2012 release of GB3, which is "in preproduction".
Ghostbusters III reunites the original cast and adds Eliza Dushku, Alissa Milano, and Anna Faris.
The base plot is "The Ghostbusters hand over the reigns to the next generation."
Of all the races of the universe the Squats have the longest memories and the shortest tempers. They are uncouth, unpredictably violent, and frequently drunk. Overall, I'm glad they're on our side!

So the Ghostbusters will be female roles now? So just eye candy? Am I reading to much into this?!? Seriously, I think Im having a panic attack just thinking about it.....oh christ.....not this movie..........NOT THIS MOVIE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Ghostbusters 3 is a Dan Akroyd pipe dream and has been in production hell for well over a decade. That is exaggerating a bit because it implies there has been production work done. The most that has been done has been the summary given above. This rerelease of the original may be a way to gauge interest in a sequel, make a little more money from the franchise, or both. I wouldn't get to worked up over another movie as it isn't likely.
Edit: Weel what do you know, it is essentially Akroyd trying to garner some marketing research to try and push forward with his idea for 3. If you ever read (or read about) the original screenplay you will know why Akroyd alone is a bad idea. A lot of the original film came through collaboration. The original screenplay had them traveling space and time using wands ala Harry Potter instead of awesome proton packs. It was more occult and magic and very little science. Well, movie science.

There is no Ghost Busters: The Video Game, only ZUL!
What a lovely singing voice you must have, Zul...

Yeah, I read about that with my bro's collecter edition. Did you know that they went through a good thirty plus concept art until they finally nailed the "No Ghosts" symbol? Which was also considered the second most recognizable symbol at the time, beaten only by... pepsi, I beleive. Either that or Coke.

I've never feared Death or Dying. I've only feared never Trying.
Meh, I'm okay with a handing over the reins thing. It worked in Extreme Ghostbusters, and let's face it, they are all getting old. It's not like they are going to Lucas the original movies and ruin that, so they'll always be around, and some new blood might be alright.
- and I would like to say, tangentially, that the re-make of Fright Night was actually pretty boss.

It's not happening.
Seriously. There's no feasible way for a movie to be released next year when it hasn't even begun filming, and the majority of the rightsowners(Harold Ramis+Bill Murray) haven't signed off on nothing new for the material.
However, Alyssa Milano was in the Ghostbusters video game released recently as a voice. That's where the rumors cropped up.

Interestingly enough, Harold Ramis and Ivan Reitman have been doing most of the recent talking about this film.. not Aykroyd. Reitman has even said they had a script in hand back in January. It does seem, though, that they are keeping things as much of a secret as they can. Various insider rumors hold that filming started during the summer and a tentative release of GB3 is set for May/June.

They can keep things as much of a secret as they want, but unless they're filming it with a handheld camera and using their kids as slave labor--there's going to be evidence of it.
Reitman, Ramis, Aykroyd, Murray, and Weaver have all taken turns saying that "there's a script! I've read it!" but every single one of them radically contrasts with another.
I should also add that if you're going off of the IMDB page that it says that Ernie Hudson is 'confirmed' to be involved.
He has gone out of his way to say he's not. And it's not like he wouldn't confirm it if he was, he doesn't exactly have people beating down his doors for work.
The new "Ghostbusters" movie is a go, but it looks like Bill Murray won't be a part of it.
That was the word from Dan Aykroyd on Friday, who said in a radio interview with Dennis Miller that filming on "Ghostbusters 3" is set to start next year, with or without Murray, who reportedly is not keen on the project.
"Yes, we will be doing the movie and hopefully with Mr. Murray. That is our hope," Aykroyd said. "We have an excellent script. What we have to remember is that 'Ghostbusters' is bigger than any one component, although Billy was absolutely the lead and contributive to it in a massive way."
The original film starred Aykroyd, Murray, Harold Ramis and Ernie Hudson as the ghost hunters. All but Murray -- whose acting career has gone in a different direction since the 1984 film -- are said to be back for the new sequel. But Aykroyd might be just a tad more optimistic than Sony, the studio behind the film, which has not officially greenlighted the project.

Six mistakes mankind keeps making century after century: Believing that personal gain is made by crushing others; Worrying about things that cannot be changed or corrected; Insisting that a thing is impossible because we cannot accomplish it; Refusing to set aside trivial preferences; Neglecting development and refinement of the mind; Attempting to compel others to believe and live as we do

Do you know how many times that Aykroyd has said that?
Hey, we can hope, can't we? If we don't hear that it's filming come next Spring then we know he's as full of it as he has been in the past.

Well, see one of the things I find more credible is the idea that this theatrical release?
It's to highlight a "Go/No Go".
I've heard fairly decent rumors that filming will start next Spring. If Sony decides to sit on it dependent on how this does...that makes far more sense than "the movie was done in superninja secrecy and will release in under a year".
