Anyone seen this? I've begun watching it, and I'm actually kinda impressed. For a sort of b-movie-ish TV series, it's remarkably good with nice acting and dramatic themes. Certainly I'm rather enjoying it.

The plot synopsis goes something like this:

Spoiler:
Spartacus, Roman slave from Thrace, fights to become a champion in the gladiatorial arena, but is rebellious as he is not a citizen of Rome. However, his owner has his wife bought and brought to him as a slave-- and she's mortally wounded. After he finds out that she was wounded by his owner as part of a scheme to maintain his loyalty, he leads a major slave uprising against the Roman Republic. Alongside all of this, flashbacks of Spartacus' life leading up to this event are seen.

Quite a good production all things considered.

it peaks with the episode of sparticus and crixus vs theocoles (like episode 6 or something), but remains quite watchable even after it.

I personally liked gods of the arena more than blood and sand.

I'm a sucker for Roman anything, so one night I sat down and watching the entire first season in one sitting.

I liked it.

There are some who walk until their legs fail them and they fall to the ground. I find that respectable.
Then there are those who drag themselves further. I find that admirable.

Well:
1) Kubrick's Sparatacus is one of the best movies ever made.
2) The bit I saw had all the gladiators striving to be the best or some other nonsense. And they all died. Er..ok.
3) There was an amazing lack of the fairer sex in the episode I watched.
4) A lot of gratuitous profanity, like they had a quota to keep.

The Spartacus movie was really good, so was Ben Hur, but the Spartacus movie was better.

What!? Which episode could you possibly have watched that didn't have a gak-ton of gratuitous nudity?

Also: Lucy Lawless.

Supposedly a finale. Two groups of gladiators inside a burning ring. Bad guy walled into a building.

Yoor Speeshawl too Gawd!

Depends on what you like. If you are a 13 year old boy who wants lots of "secks and bewbies" and gratuitous slow motion blood spatter than Spartacus is for you. If you are over 15 and want a show about Rome with good acting, coherent, well written story, and excellent characters to go with your sex and violence then you should watch HBO's much superior Rome.

Indeed the Rome season 1 was quite good. Season 2 was very meh though.

What if I'm neither the 13 year old boy nor the 15 year old boy?

Geeze.

If you are 15 years or older then Rome. If you want to see Brian Blessed cry, Patrick Stewart with hair, Reverend Mother Gaius Helen Mohiam being an evil bitch and John Hurt in a drag show then I Claudius.

If you want "Secks, Bewbies, Blood, and slow motion to save on writers" then Spartacus Blood and Sand

I disliked it.

The writing was gak, the blood and slow-mo were painful to watch (and not in a good way), and I didn’t like any of the characters.

Too bad about the lead actor kicking it, he was so young.

Just enjoy it for what it is, comic book violence like 300 but much bloodier. I've seen Rome and I Claudius as well.

Some of the best stuff isn't the sex and fighting actually but the scheming and manipulative characters that fill the stories. I found it genuinely very good viewing far beyond just getting a look at Lucy Lawless, though she is pretty fine I think most would agree. It certainly went beyond my expectations though there is a lot of sex and violence. It's not Shakespeare, but it is entertaining.

That certainly hasn't been my interpretation of the series. I've found it quite enjoyable, and I wasn't really paying much attention to the "secks, bewbs, blood, and slow motion", though the fight scenes were pretty good.

I'm guessing some people either have a problem with the amount of sex or want to make out they are all grown up and above that sort of thing. Actually, there's plenty of interesting plotting and characters to enjoy in the series.

Maybe as a woman I don't have to prove that I'm a man instead of a boy (I'm already better than a man, after all [/I jest]) because I was never a boy to begin with?

First season, absolutely great. Me and several buddies would get together to watch it when it was on and have a good time.

The prequel season, also very good. Much shorter then the original one but to be expected. Characters that were new were good and it was fun to see some of the others as before we met them.

Second season, without the lead actor I am worried. Another great series suffering a tragedy this year, the other being Walking Dead losing its main director >...<

My fiance and I enjoyed it.

It isn't high art, and shouldn't be compared to Spartacus or Rome (the latter of which isn't particularly high art either).

It's a sword & sandals hackfest. It's produced by Sam Raimi, and actually shares a lot of beats and characterisations with his earlier productions Hercules & Xena. Spartacus isn't as overtly camp or family friendly as those two, but it is straight up story for the fun of story, historical accuracy and plausibility be damned.

If you want to sit there and think 'this is what proper Rome was like I am a student of history' then you won't enjoy the series. If you want to see a story of betrayal and revenge, it's jolly good.

“We may observe that the government in a civilized country is much more expensive than in a barbarous one; and when we say that one government is more expensive than another, it is the same as if we said that that one country is farther advanced in improvement than another. To say that the government is expensive and the people not oppressed is to say that the people are rich.”
